Throughout the week, wtatennis.com has been revealing the WTA Player Awards voted for by the international media - first Comeback Player Of The Year Yaroslava Shvedova, then Newcomer Of The Year Laura Robson, then Doubles Team Of The Year Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci and Most Improved Player Errani, and finally the big one, Player Of The Year Serena Williams. Today it's time for the fans and players to be heard with the last wave of 2012 WTA Player Awards.

The Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award, recognizing professionalism, attitude and sense of fair play, and the Player Service Award, which recognizes the player who has done the most to support fellow players through the WTA Players' Council and other initiatives, are both voted for by the WTA players themselves, and it was a pair of former No.1s who got the nods - the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award went to Kim Clijsters and the Player Service Award went to Venus Williams.

Last but certainly not least, the Fan Favorite Awards - for seven days last week, over 65,000 of you cast your vote in five award categories, and needless to say, Agnieszka Radwanska seems to be very popular - see below for the results of the five Fan Favorite awards:

Fan Favorite Singles Player: Agnieszka Radwanska
~ Though there were 13 players to choose from, a whopping 42.8% of the votes went to Agnieszka Radwanska, with Li Na coming in second (27.0%), Maria Sharapova third (10.9%) and Serena Williams fourth (5.1%).

Fan Favorite Doubles Team: The Williams Sisters
~ There were five teams to choose from and it was Venus Williams and Serena Williams who finished first with 36.0% of the votes (Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova came in second place with 25.5%).

Fan Favorite Twitter: Caroline Wozniacki
~ There were five Twitter pages to choose from and it was Caroline Wozniacki who finished first with 42.0% of the votes (Serena Williams came in second place with 24.9%).

Fan Favorite Facebook: Agnieszka Radwanska
~ There were five Facebook pages to choose from and it was Agnieszka Radwanska who finished first with a whopping 46.5% of the votes (Maria Sharapova came in second place with 24.0%).

Fan Favorite Video: Agnieszka Radwanska & The Bee
~ There were five videos to choose from and in the most dominant Fan Favorite victory of the day it was Agnieszka Radwanska's battle with a bee that won, earning 48.7% of the vote (the Strong Is Beautiful ad came in second place with 20.8%).

I could see into a couple of shock results, but pretty much all of these are except maybe doubles. Although I expected Andi/Lucie to win that and Serena to get Twitter instead.

I really didn't expect Aga to win the Facebook Award. 46.5%!   It's interesting if we compare the number of likes the nominees have on FB:

Sharapova 8.7 Mill
Ivanovic 722.000
Azarenka 182.000
Radwanska 121.000
Kvitova 104.000

Anyway, congrats to all award winners of 2012! :yeah:

Gotta love the insecurity of Masha fans.

As if there is any doubt as to which WTA player is most popular worldwide. And as if winning a popularity contest is any kind of meaningful achievement in its own right.

No offense to Kim, but I'm a bit disappointed the sportsmanship award wasn't awarded to somebody who played a full season. This award is (or should be) too important to be thrown as a consolation bone to a departing star. Not saying she's not a good sport, but there were good candidates who played a full calendar who deserved it more than her this year.

Honestly I really think Venus deserves a comeback player of the year and sportsmanship award.
She's the one who always makes amazing comebacks, but WTA failed to recognize her contribution in 05, 07 and 12.
And needless to say the sportsmanship award. Not saying Kim doesn't deserve, but Venus has always been a great fighter and gracious player, which is what sportsmanship means.

Well, if Serena was my favorite player her not winning some silly internet poll would be the least of my worries. A pity though that people are not even willing to say congrats to Caro for winning something as insignificant as a twitter award.

And congrats to Aga. There's no doubt that you have to take all these awards with a serious grain of salt (rather a boulder of salt actually) considering the voting process. But even if we're taking that into account she's clearly much more popular than posters here are willing to give her credit for. So congrats to Aga and her fans and to the other winners, "even" Caroline Wozniacki.

because voting was designed for stalkers , who could vote 10 000 or even more from one computer
If voting was allowed 1 vote from 1 ip with captcha and other protection from cheating and Aga wins - everyone would congratulate her,

your argument can be valid. but this may mean that serena or masha (who I think has more fans, globally I mean) don't have "stalkers". I doubt it :)

as for Na, I think half of her votes (if not more) come from chinese fans

How do you know how WTA voting system works? Maybe you can vote 3472x times, but 1 IP = 1 vote in the database. ;)

And you seriously think that, among all the Sharapova's fans (who are much more numerous than Aga's, according to you), nobody voted several times? If the system is too permissive, it is for everybody, you know. The difference in terms of number of votes has other reasons.

Fact is that, as usual, you point some hypothesis as valid although they are not verified.

Well, NashaMasha is right in that it's very unlikely that Radwanska is four times as popular as Sharapova and eight times as popular than Serena with Azarenka not even getting enough votes to be mentionned. If Aga would win by a smaller margin, ok, but that big of a difference is just not credible. I think that some players and their fans just did a better job advertising their candidacy in these polls than others. But despite all that Aga Radwanska clearly has a large group of dedicated fans. We can't blame them for taking advantage of the flaws in the system, as I'm sure fans of other players have done that as well (including yours truly ).

Then every election result is doubtful as we always can make hypothesis to explain why the winner has won whereas he shouldn't have.

Going by that, your speech sounds a bit like a civil war in some non-developped country: "I don't recognize the winner, it's totally unfair as she's not the one I voted for. I'm going to fight".

Ideally, a vote is valuable only if EVERYBODY votes. It's clearly not the case here as all the tennis fans didn't vote, but it's normal. You'll never have a vote of this span where everybody will vote. Maybe there were just more Aga's fans who voted than Sharapova's fans. But please, stop calling it a cheat, I think the voting system had a minimum of security.

At least now the WTA has something to call her for another year other than former no.2.

You know what makes this year's awards even more awesome?
The fact that the Shrieking Razor didn't win a single one.
So much for the Guardians with all their bullshit on how loved and popular she is.
Although the Shrieking Razor has thousands of "friends" on facebook, it seems that not many of them care about her when it comes to sth other than being uber excited about her looks.

If the Guardians hadn't spent so much time on spreading hate towards other players, then maybe their fave would've won.

I can almost smell your seething. :haha:

because voting was designed for stalkers , who could vote 10 000 or even more from one computer
If voting was allowed 1 vote from 1 ip with captcha and other protection from cheating and Aga wins - everyone would congratulate her,
but voting system was flawed and doesn't show really favourite , but more like who has more fans with no life

I'm sure Agnieszka is just torn to shreds inside that you're not congratulating her title defence. I bet it just ruined her day.

absolutely no security, even a minimum

Not going to lie I CACKLED at how pathetic you are. It's a fucking fan voted poll hosted as a fun event for fans of the WTA to participate in at the end of the year and you're comparing it to rigging and cheating an election. How can you be so damn pressed? Every single thread about Aga, you're there. It's tired and shows what a sad life you must lead.
The WTA polls are over, Agnieszka beat down the competition in all her categories thanks to her charming and warm personality (the opposite of your fave, I'd say). Build a bridge and get over it dude cause nobody's buying the shit you're pedalling out here.

Fact is, aside from these suspicious voting's there is absolutely no evidence that suggest Radwanska may be a fan favorite. She doesn't get any notable crowd support during her tournaments, she dosen't have a very big fan base here either...one has to wonder where all those Radwanska fans are hiding. It seems like she's the only top player who dosen't have a substantial following so her winning these awards is simply suspicious to say the least.

Again, even in Poland people rather watch foreign-league football matches than her tennis matches. So her fan base must be very much undercover, they don't even bother to watch apparently.

Yes, the awards are meaningless, although Agnieszka herself is enjoying it. And she should.
The point is I don't care who wins the awards, but I DO care when people start insulting the players who do nothing wrong, but just try to do their jobs as well as they can - work hard to win their games.
Insulting the players should be immediately banned by the administration of this forum.

Yes. Aga's fans did a better job voting and spreading the word among fellow fans that this was going on, so they earned it for her and themselves.

The best result of stosur in wim is 3R and she is in the top 5 and Maria former champion beating Serena and the 1st seed not in top 5?

It doesn't state who was most tweeted about, just the % of positive tweets from tweets about them. So for all we know Aga could have had 2,000 tweets and Maria, 20,000 but out of all of those Aga scored a higher % of positive rather than neutral or negative.

Also just because someone likes Maria on facebook doesn't necessarily mean they're all fans. Alot of people are interested in Maria's celebrity. She's touted by the media as the 'face of the WTA'. She's always featured in Forbes and people are interested in those who are full of wealth and power and Maria has the throne in the WTA and people are interested in that.

:hysteric: how is this even possible?

Very simple. There were only about 60,000 votes. A single computer could run a script that voted for a certain option every 3 seconds and would be guaranteed to get exactly the results its owner wanted it to. I thought about doing that, but I couldn't decide whether I wanted Sara Errani or Jelena Jankovic to become fan favourite. Maybe next year ...

So, don't hate the Polish people because of that, it might be a single person is responsible for the result.

because voting was designed for stalkers , who could vote 10 000 or even more from one computer
If voting was allowed 1 vote from 1 ip with captcha and other protection from cheating and Aga wins - everyone would congratulate her,

but voting system was flawed and doesn't show really favourite , but more like who has more fans with no life

Oh,the irony:rolleyes::oh:

Well, that's nice.:wavey:
You know that very few of the facebook fans are actually fans of the player but more like fans of the star image?
And in addition I doubt Sharapova or Serena mentioned their nominations in their social media accounts, unlike Aga and Caro.

I know Serena didn't mention one word about any of these awards to her 3 million plus followers on twitter.

Every interview I've seen of her, she is just boring. She's not a charismatic speaker at all. I'm shocked she got this award tbh. Kvitova, Vika, Masha, Rena, and so many other girls are above her personality wise.

I guess not many people were bothered voting, so she won by default. :tape:

OMFG, you didn't really realise what is this award?

It's "fan favourite player", not "the most popular player", not "who has the most fans in the world" or something. I mean, seriously, you should just understand this title, nothing more.

No one who isn't a tennis fan knows who the fuck Radwanska is, but between fans she's popular

There is no such player as "fuck Radwanska". You are starting insulting the players as if insulting forum members were not enough for you. You are showing you have a mind of immature and mentally unstable kid who insults the world when things don't go your way. And this happens not only here but in every your post I accidentally come across. Every your post is filled with spit, poison and insults. I guess that's the way you live your life, but unfortunately the smell is spreading out here and I am not enjoying it.

I don't follow Aga on FB or Twitter although I like her to some extent. Well now I've decided to like her FB page

I do follow/Like Vika, Serena and Venus on FB and Twitter. And Maria on FB. Maria and Vika's FB pages are more informative. Serena and Venus to some extent but not in the same manner as Vika and Maria. Serena's twitter has been kind of slow lately and Vika as well. Caro I follow in twitter but I'm slowly regretting this as she irritate the hell out of me with the TROLL she's dating. URGH!!! I wish she would change her profile pic.

I think maybe Aga must put more fun things on her page. Maria has recently been posting lil fun things. Not sure if she did before as I only recently liked her FB page.

Still based on some of the relaxed photos we've seen of Aga I think she's less guarded and maybe that's what the fans are seeing. It's not how much people like your page because they know you name since the media throws it out constantly but more how you interact.

Anyway Congrats to Aga and all the other winners.

Foxy

No one ever thought the "fan favorite award" was more important than winning a slam.

I don't understand why people are so het up about a set of relatively meaningless awards. We need some real tennis STAT so all this emoting about nothing can end.

Because Aga takes it very seriously. Don't you remember how happy she was in IW when people asked top 8 about this ? Half of the girls were choked by this result anyway

Yes. Aga's fans did a better job voting and spreading the word among fellow fans that this was going on, so they earned it for her and themselves. Other players may be (even) more popular, but if their fans didn't care to vote and/or inform other fans they now shouldn't complain that Radwanska won.

Exactly. And that's all there is to it really. Nothing good will come from wailing and whining about it in here when you don't like the result.

There was nothing inappropriate or odd in Aga's reaction. Of course she expressed her excitement about it, there is nothing wrong with that, girls like to be popular. And apart from being a superb tennis player she is also a regular girl.

Best interview after losses?. Yeah plural; you have to do it consistently in order to get a prize for it.

It's a bit pathetic to have the Fan Favourite awards on the roll of honour page. Especially the Twitter, Facebook and Video awards.

This explains why having 10 million likes on FB doesn't automatically mean the player is "liked" or that they are POPULAR :wavey:

I hope this is a big lesson to you folks obsessed with numbers ... "all that glitters is not gold"

Congrats to the all the award winners, my favorite being the doubles pairing of the Williams sisters - they're sooo good that their matches are better than men's singles competition

Sure, she seems nice but her fan base isn't particularly big
