Seems to be that it's more likely to get the player of the year award ranked # 2 or 3 :D

Another proof how bad the ranking system is ;)

It's different on the ATP tour, isn't it??

It's pretty bad when we've had year end #1s who weren't even in the discussion for Player of the Year-- like Hingis, Davenport several times, Jelena, Wozniacki.

These statistics just show that player should be in top form to win majors and have a full schedule or be consistent on other turnaments to finish year #1 too

If best players continue to treat non-majors as warm-up for Majors , it will always happen that POY is not number 1

Usually it's the fault of the ranking system, but this year it's simply because the WTA doesn't give enough points for the Olympics.

When Davenport accepted the award in 1999 she said that she and Hingis were both player of the year and she accepted it on their behalf.

Very misleading. Injuries affected the tour immensely in the mid 2000's.

Davenport clung to #1 in 04 and 05 as Serena, Venus, Henin, and Clijsters all dominated briefly during their slam runs but were then injured. Mauresmo in 2006 was more a gift and a congratulations to breaking down her mental block. Surely someone who made all 4 slam finals, won one, and the YEC should have been the Player of the Year in 2006.

2008 was crap. Tie goes to the player with a slam and slam final. Venus? Only won YEC and Wimbledon, did nothing else. Jankovic? Slam final and some indoor titles - big whoop. Sharapova disappeared after OZ. Ivanovic? No. Tie goes to Serena. 2010? WTA would have felt stupid giving it to someone who only played half the year. 2nd place goes to Clijsters - slam and YEC.

I think these are pretty accurate. No one can deny this was Serena's year. Azarenka was just consistent throughout the year. USO Final, Wimbledon SF, etc. etc, while losing to Serena every time. Serena's OZ 4R and RG 1R kills her. She'll be #1 after OZ without a doubt.
