Sharapova can count on her BH and these days Maria is quite good at grinding style even when she is off.

And I just wonder how Venus is gonna come to the net if her shots end up in the crowd's face first.
Venus is aggressively bad when her game is off and she just can't find the court.

I think the worst matches I saw Venus play were 3:

The shameful Melbourne 1R loss to Pironkova 9-7 in the third I think, what a grueling and painful match to watch.

Her QF match AO 10 loss to Na li, that was pretty disastrous also

And that US Open SF loss to Fiona..... That tiebreak could be the worst of all

Venus is just a bit better but not by a lot honestly. If she isn't playing well she isn't winning a lot of those matches which explains a lot of her inexplicable losses. Sharapova doesn't have as many potential weapons as Venus (net play, defensive ability) to compete in a match where she isn't playing well. Although I must say Venus at her worst is never fun to watch.

Agreed, Sharapova at her best is great and can beat pretty much anyone, but she can't play great consistently like some other players. If I had to make 'greatness' groups based on peak level of play combined with consistency of the last 30 years it would be something like this:

Group 1: Serena, Graf and Henin.
Group 2: Hingis, Davenport, Clijsters and Venus.
Group 3: Seles, Azarenka, Sharapova, Capriati, Mauresmo and Kuznetsova.
Group 4: Dementieva, Radwansa, Stosur, Li, Pierce etc..

I put Seles in group 3 because she got badly dominated by all the women in group 2, so it seems fair. Don't care about her slams or the stabbing (eventhough it sucks that it happened), but we can't use IF's here. Venus started off great, but kinda ruined her legacy in the last couple of years. I know about her condition, but remember IF's don't count.

Did I miss anyone?

Note: I did not add dinosaurs in the list cause they can't be compared to the last 2 generations of tennis.

Leo St
Nov 29th, 2012, 08:56 PM
considering venus at her worst is when shes feeling as if a truck went over her because of her condition and sharapova at her worst is just a player in a bad performance day, sharapova wins this easily

:yeah:

As for not knowing this term, "trough," I've heard of peaks and valleys, but I've never heard peaks and troughs. Valley is the opposite of a peak in terms of geography, while a trough to me is more like the one pictured by someone, a horse's trough. I'm not in the fields of economics, business, or meteorology, so...I learn something knew everyday.

Also, it is better to speak of specific matches than speculate on what if she played so and so in her peak or valley. But, hey, I recognize that people love their peak Pierce style threads.

Rest Maria!

there was nothing wrong with this match - Maria had a very underwhelming year in 2007 and elderly Williams was always an erratic mess outside of few Wimbledons. I'd say this match was better than most of "marquee" matchups of this miserable 2013 season
