Brisbane was an international tournament up till now. The tournament apparently didn't want to fork over more money because it got great fields the last few years purely because of it's place in the calendar, became clearly quite popular with players, and now they're upgraded

Seriously, Maria and Vika reached both 9 finals in 2012, do you really think it was only due to the draw being weak 9 times  give credit where it's due they were clearly above most of players if not all.

I don't think a BYE is needed for the first event of the year.

They are just giving the top 2 seeds some breadth to face Serena and not bomb out R32.

Singles winner gets US$110K.

Just for FYI and to see how overrated are doubles these days, winning the doubles title will get each player of the team more money than reaching the singles quarterfinals

The BYEs are totally unnecessary and actually could play a trick on Vikaria & Maria since the draw will be packed and they will have less time to adapt.

Not really. Brisbane had the very same beaches and landscape the previous years. Two main reasons now:

* $1M prize money
* Hong Kong exhibition got cancelled

A lot of players rely on Doubles to get maybe 100K extra per year but a team like Srebotnik/Peschke usually play in front of three spectators on court 17. From a market perspective, they're way overpaid.

Jorn
Nov 24th, 2012, 11:47 PM
That also what spiceboy try to tell...

But I has seen dubs, I remeber in Hamburg (AnnaK with Zvereva) and Hannover again (NZ with this time Åsa Svensson) where they was a big crowd, but that also loooong time ago... ;)

well how much do you think they should get paid then?

The thing is, it really depends as you have may have a packed house in Indian Wells but 90% of doubles matches played anywhere else will have laughable crowds.

There's barely 500 spectators in Paris for the final.
Their pay should be cut by 20% and be distributed somewhere else.

When Madame Li gets BYE, Muggy complain about "lack of matches". So basic.

I really don't like them giving byes at such high-quality tournaments. :o

Hell, I'm not even sure it's the best thing for Maria (or Vika)- they'll have just one match practice before they have to take on a big gun.

I agree. I really don't think it's needed at the first tournament of the year.

Yer this was first thing that come to mind for me too. It's debateable if the bye is even beneficial here. I mean there here to warm up for the Australian Open. While if they make the semi's or final I'm sure it will make no real difference to them, but with the bye there's a higher chance they will bomb out first match vs a likely reasonable opponent, more played in than they are.

The problem with going down this route is where do you stop the theory. Because you're indicating doubles players should get less because fewer fans are there to watch their match. But the same is true of 90% of the singles players who often play in front of few people on an outside court. The size of the crowd for doubles, like singles is linked to who is playing in it. Eg. when Nadal plays doubles, the crowd is packed out.
