View Full Version : Most shocking losses this year?

Even the top players have been vulnerable sometimes :speakles:. Sometimes it's the scorelines rather than results. For me personally the top ones are:

Razzano def. S. Williams 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 (French Open 1R)
Robson def. Clijsters 7-6, 7-6 (US Open 2R)
Hogenkamp def. Goerges 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 (Linz)
Cirstea def. Stosur 6-3 7-6 (Australian Open 1R)
Oudin def. Jankovic 6-4 6-2 (Birmingham F)
Wozniacki def. S. Williams 6-4 6-4 (Miami QF)
Vinci def. Ivanovic 6-0 6-0 (Montreal 2R)
Errani def. Stosur 7-5 1-6 6-3 (French Open SF)
Kuznetsova def. A. Radwanska 6-1 6-2 (French Open 3R)
Chang def. Stosur 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (Osaka SF)

Razzano defeat Williams for sure. Serena was in top form and Virginie wasn't (as her following results showed).
Miami was not that surprising, Serena wasn't that good at the beginning of the year, and of course, Caroline is (was) a top player.

Vinci def. Ivanovic 6-0 6-0 (Montreal 2R)
Kuznetsova def. A. Radwanska 6-1 6-2 (French Open 3R)

These two are actually not shocking at all.
Ivanovic was playing awful throughout these 2-3 years.
But if you say for double bagels, it was surprising.

Kuznetsova has been dominated against Aga, so nothing shocking at all.

Exactly. I put in the OP that sometimes the results aren't that shocking but the scorelines are ;).

And Radwanska's really improved her results the last year and a half. Sveta, not so much ;).

Biggest upset:
Razzano d. Williams

I also thought (even though she was only a part-timer) that
Robson d. Clijsters
was pretty shocking

Vika and Masha didn't really have any shocking losses to lower ranked players I don't think

Serena's loss to Razzano is the clear winner. Followed by the loss of one set to Yakimova at Fed Cup. :tape:

I'd also go for Lucic d. Bartoli at Wimbledon. Wasn't expecting this even though we know Miki is a dangerous grass-courter.

Cirstea def. Stosur 6-3 7-6 (Australian Open 1R)

I don't think there was anything surprising about this one. ;)

Were you equally shocked when Errani reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2010? Just curious.

Her game is suited for clay, and maybe slow HC, so it is shocking to see her winning on the supposedly fastest surface... Actually Shvedova did a great job in that 3rd round match showing how to play on grass, with beautiful serving, volleys and agressive gameplay. Honestly I was shocked it was not easier for Shvedova.

Serena to Razzano.

That's the only loss that surprised me. Otherwise, the complete annihilation of Maria S in the Olympic gold final was a surprise. I thought Sharapova would have a little more to give for gold. "Not today, baby," said Serena, to quote Rennae Stubbs in the commentary booth.

Serena was injured at AO,and Makarova was on fire. So, great win for her, and no shock.

Speaking of it, the Golden set was a shock. A Wild Card in Shvedova winning the Golden set against a top 10 player who was in good form.

By far Serena vs Virginie at RG just because of how dominant Serena had been post miami, only for it then to fall apart at the French, and i think this win is the one thing thats keeping next season from not being completely NID.

Serena has her aura back after what happened post RG last year, and she could go on a tear even at Paris next year, but it's the one place that people will feel like they can rattle Serena, and there's a little bit of doubt in everyones mind most crucially Rena's.

As a Venus fan and even given her syndrome the loss to Vesnina in R1 at Wimbledon was a big shock. She looked and played like crap, but all along i was kinda expecting something to happen and change considering it was Wimbledon and the one tournament she'd fight like crazy to not flake out at but nothing happened. By far the flattest and shellshocked i've ever seen her look on the court!
