Sorry, but when it cames to rock music, USA beats the Europe, hands down. It should be "american songs that Europe has no idea about" instead...

Totally disagree. And I love a great deal of underground alternative American music (Olivia Tremor Control, Half Japanese, Daniel Johnston, Yo La Tengo) as well as all the classic 1960s bands and songwriters like The Byrds, Bob Dylan, The Fugs, The 13th Floor Elevators, Frank Zappa, The Troggs, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, MC5, the list really is pretty endless. Oh yeah, and there's all the great punk bands like The Ramones, The Cramps, The B-52s, Pere Ubu and so on. Yeah, American music at it's best is pretty outstanding.

But even so, these days nothing gets me going more than some really completely bonkers crazed psychedelic 1960s French pop. Infact, 1960s French pop in general is just so full of humour, subversiveness, imagination, irony and playfulness that I just can't get enough of it.

And of course there's the greatest rock band of all time....The Kinks, who are of course from my hometown of London. So I would say the best of Europe, especially that of the UK and France, (although there's also some pretty wonderful music from Italy, Belgium and several other contries too) easily holds it's own against the best American music. Even some of the best 1960s Polish music is pretty good.

Well, I guess I can't make a post like this without giving a few examples of the kind of music I'm talking about so here we go, a few examples of 1960s French pop at it's very best....

Dig this...

Currently yeah. But if you're including GB in Europe that's not always so. From classic rock through punk GB more than held their own. In fact, I'd say they win.

GB wins only in 60s. Since 70s its all USA. And only two good things that came out of punk are Ramones (american band), and fact that punk slayed hippies

sigh why can't people discuss a topic without making it a competition????

If there is music you enjoy why do Americans have to like it or even know about it?

I could just see the foaming of the mouth of some posters if I started a thread about American artista that Europe knows nothing about and then get into a discussion about who is better. I believe the first response would've been along the lines of America is not the only country in the world, who cares about what Americans like, yadda yadda yadda.....

If inclusion was the goal maybe you should've just said hey here are some European bands that I love and I wonder if people outside of Europe know about them? Just enjoy your music and share with people if you think they don't have enough followers..

Stereo Love became popular in the US wayy after Europe. Same with Lights by Ellie Goulding. And Ai Se Eu Te Pego even though that wasn't that big in the US.

Although surprisingly I heard "Allez Ola Ole" from Eurovision at a party in NY and I was stunned :speakles::lol:
