ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare - a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he's devised his own post-rehab regimen - resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock's police contact, Capt. Tobias "Toby" Gregson, knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crime, it's simple deduction that he's going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it's elementary that it's a job for Watson.

Sherlock Holmes has to be one of the most annoying characters ever.
I like Jonny, though, and Lucy is always worth watching.
I just might give it a try.

The BBC's excellent Sherlock, similar in premise, means this new show has an awful lot to live up to.

What's the fucking point?

Just hurry up and make new Sherlock episodes FFS, by far the best active TV show.

I don't like that Sherlock at all.

I've still to watch the first episode, but I hope it won't be as pretentious as the BBC version.

I love the fact that they changed Watson's gender in this show to female

Nah, the BBC version is brilliant. The casting of Watson as a woman in the American version screams gimmick, but maybe it will deliver.

I actually quite like the idea of casting a woman as Watson. Shows with a male-female dynamic always work better I think and it will be interesting to see how the Sherlock type world can work with a female Watson.

There will be some sexual tension between them, real or contrived, and at some point they'll sleep together. The end.

Yep, Holmes fucking Watson, that's definitely something Sir Arthur would not ever consider..

The Americans actually wanted to do a remake of BBC's Sherlock, but Moffat, etc. refused. So the Americans decided to make their own. They had to make enough changes so that it wouldn't resemble BBC's Sherlock too much, that's probably why they made Watson female (+ obviously want to create some sexual tension there). The BBC version was made by Sherlock Holmes fanatics, the American one is made by people who're jumping on the bandwagon.
I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch Elementary, since I love Sherlock so much.

I am Sherlock Holmes fanatic, and I hate the BBC version. Tried through four episodes. Awful. Definitely not brilliant in my view. However, I'm sure I'll be a critic of the CBS version as well, once I see it.

i must agree, i don't get the fuss over the BBC show, neither. i thought it was quite annoying and way too flashy. i also didn't like how watson was of hardly any use at all. come to think of it, IMHO that's one of the most tiresome concepts, the all-knowing main character (as in house or the mentalist).

It's awful. I tried for Lucy, I really did. It's just another run of the mill US crime show. Quirky, unstable yet heroic lead detective, who has a love-hate relationship with his female sidekick. This is US crime show by the numbers, just with the characters coming from Sherlock Holmes.

It will probably get canceled very soon. :o :help: Lucy Liu's career is in the toilet. The movie roles seem to have dried up and her TV series has little to no hope of getting renewed for a second season.

The rating is high though. More than enough to get renewed for a 2nd season.

So far I like it but yeah . .it doesn't fit with my idea of Sherlock Holmes. Neither does the BBC series - which I don't like at all.

On IMDB the BBC's Sherlock series gets a very high 9.2/10 rating from IMDB voters, Ekementary a decent 6.8/10.

That broadly tally's with the bulk of the reviews I've seen. Most have said Elementary is a good show, but that Sherlock overshadows it.

None of which makes it a definitive fact that Sherlock is the better show. Just it gives a clear idea of the wider perception out there.
