I think Liz looked her best in A Place in the Sun but Monty looked better in The Heiress with that moustache and Victorian clothing (take me now!)

What about Cat?

I know that it has little to do with the thread but Vivien Leigh beats both of the options in the beauty department by a lot.

I love Leigh, but 'by far'??? You're kidding, right?

Her acting ability certainly is better though. (Meh, but 'Streetcar'..it must have been
pretty easy to act as a slut because she WAS a slut then :haha: countless 'dalliances' with
London taxi drivers!! I envy them :sobbing: )

Miss Leigh definitely was among the most beautiful & talented of actresses in that era. Sadly, we are learning more and more of the bad aspects of her life nowadays and they do not appear to be very pleasant:

Dunno how much of it (or if any of this) is true. But it may account for why she was not regarded as highly as other Hollywood beauties.

I wanted to vote for Gene as she and I were both from Brooklyn. But, I had to set aside my prejudices and vote for Liz. Tough choice but I had to do it.

She should be judged by her beauty and talent both of which are exceptional. That said she was clearly a disturbed individual, there was not treatment for her illness back then and people were not looking very fondly of such 'strange' behaviour. However, such biographies are tremendously exaggerated (its a rule), not that I don't believe that some of the things are true but authors love to add a considerate amount of fiction for the WOW effect.

Neither. It's eye of the beholder. To me, Tierney is more fetching.

Liz, because she has the looks of a woman not a child.

Of course Liz is objectively prettier, but personally I would want to look like Gene more

Vivien was nuts, but I would be very skeptical of the rash of books that have come out the last 20 years, about her and many others. They are all dead, so no one can stand up for them and dispute the contents. One recent book claimed that Joan Crawford caused a crabs outbreak at MGM. Vivien screwing random cabbies, they had another about prostitutes at a gas station, some of the stories from that were so strange, they had to have been made up. The only reason Olivia De Havilland and Joan Fontaine haven't had filthy books written about them is that they are still alive. There's a cottage trade on making up trash on dead stars.

Tierney was extremely beautiful, but there's something 'empty' about her. I don't find her intriguing in any way. OTOH, Liz Taylor is far from my ideal of beauty, and yet when I watch her I understand why so many people were/are smitten with her.

The most hilarious claim I've read is that Vanessa Redgrave divorced Tony Richardson because she caught him in bed with Michael Redgrave. Afterwards, Richardson told her: Well, what's the problem? We both love him.

Wasn't Laurence Olivier bisexual also? I love the both of them. Probably my favourite actor/actress pairing of all time. I have That Hamilton Woman on DVD, it's their best pairing. I think they both looked best in 1940 when Vivien was in Waterloo Bridge and Larry was in Rebecca. He wanted her to be the second Mrs de Winter but I've seen her screen test of it and I'm actually glad Joan Fontaine got the role because Vivien isn't really that believable as an ingénue.
