How sad. I've never seen Sharapova that expressive and emotive. She really did not want to lose today.

She tried her hardest to summon her indoor '06 hitting to no avail. Azarenka will get her lashing.

3-set record ruined

Abysmal returning from Sharapova. Azarenka kept the pressure on Maria like she always does, but Maria made life so difficult for herself with horrible serving and by hitting every single forehand right back to Azarenka.

Congrats to Vika. Enjoy getting demolished by Serena :)

That was a cat fight if I've ever heard one :p

Masha's serve just let her down again and it's a continuing trend in the pressure packed matches. Vika's whole game held strong and that was the difference!

Well, Masha shouldn't ever made it this far (due to Mother Nature). So her fans can't be unhappy with the result. She went 2 rds farther than she should of.

Neither played great for the most of the match. And both will make nice cat food, for Serena's ravenous appetite (unless Errani pulls the humongous upset).

This was a bit like Maria's Australian semi against Kvitova. Started amazing, had a let down in the second set, and then raised her level in the third. Difference is that Vika is a more solid player and Maria couldn't outnerve her into errors when the match got tight.

That ad court serve is just laughable.

What a grueling match. From midway in the 2nd set to midway through the 3rd set, there were so many great baseline rallies, especially Vika's consistent depth was just  After that, Maria actually seemed to be tired out and had to rely on her serve to even stay in the match. I don't know what happened to Vika's serve though, it's not what it was in early hardcourt season.

Too many UE's in the end for Maria. Even though she lost it proved a point I made earlier that this would be decided on Maria's ground game and not her serving. Really should have broken to go 3-2 up but alas these days happen. Sucks that she ruined her 3 set record for the second year running at USO but I'd rather it go than her night match.

Even though it was clear to us tennis fans that a LOT of that tennis was ugly. The media and public will lap it up, which is always good for the tour.

What a shitty match. Maria was so bad at the end.

Marionated
Sep 7th, 2012, 09:31 PM
Basically unless Maria serves an ace/unreturnable/good enough to set up a 1-2 punch then she's at an immediate disadvantage on serve because her footwork just can't deal with the speed and depth of the Azarenka ROS (which really is something- the way she made some of those 100+mph serves look like nothing ), and Azarenka is the more consistent of the two in the rallies.

With all this in mind, Sharapova can't afford to return poorly, which she really did in that 3rd set.

A match of uneven quality but pretty enjoyable overall.

Patrick345
Sep 7th, 2012, 09:31 PM
The whole third set I could only think about the Australian Open and not the final, but the semifinal between Kvitova and Sharapova. Kvitova dominated the whole set and got broken in the end. I was so scared the same would happen here. Every Sharapova game over deuce and no break. It seemed Maria was a step slow in the end and if Vika managed to get into a rally she won most of the time. But Sharapova was really clutch, especially her deuce serve was a terror.

It is again the best thing we can have so far:

A good and tight match with a bad first set.

It was the same with Sharapova-Bartoli and Azarenka-Stosur.
It's not possible at the moment to have three good sets in a row.

2nd and 3rd set were high quality with nice and good rallies.

So glad Vika took the trash out...I knew Sharapova would sail that last one long...From 1-5 in the first set, Sharapova was shit...So many errors and every service game was a battle...Sharapova was mentally fried by the end so it is better that she lost because Serena would have trashed her even harder tomorrow if she would have made it through...Mentally fried + Mental matchup trashings equals a crime scene waiting to happen...Congrats Vika, great tactic to mentally wear Sharpie down in every service game in the final set:wavey: Better player won and at least she will make the final somewhat competitive...Won't get her ass completely handed to her by Rena like Sharapova would have...Back to the drawing board for Sharpie:haha:

Sharapova without 2nd serve , without any serve in Ad court managed to be competitive .... Vika won this match just using her consistency as soon as Masha was becoming tired and making more UE. Well, well, that was some kind of a match. Victoria's level was pretty mediocre in first set then she upped it just a tad and that was it. I guess this is revenge from Beijing where Victoria had 5-2 and innumerable amount of opportunities to win this match, though in the third set again today she was still so desperate to head-case it despite dominating from the ground this much.

If you watch well, Victoria could have made the F of 3 majors in a single year wasn't it for Serena -- Victoria's one and only obstacle is Serena, she really needs to find a way to beat her though I don't have my hopes much up if the US player makes it ; but I'll not watch the F and Victoria has had a great US Open.

She's also stated that she is the best hard-court player of her generation by far and the best one of the WTA, 2 HC slam F in one year is just so good, if only it could be a win on Saturday. :sobbing: Victoria will dominate the HCs just like Clijsters did in her hey days for the many years to come.

:sobbing: Victoria will dominate the HCs just like Clijsters did in her hey days for the many years to come.

ugghhh I hope not.:tape:

This was a bit like Maria's Australian semi against Kvitova. Started amazing, had a let down in the second set, and then raised her level in the third. Difference is that Vika is a more solid player and Maria couldn't outnerve her into errors when the match got tight.

That ad court serve is just laughable.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is why PovaRenka is the rivalry we've all been waiting for.

Maria started off the match with the same gameplan as their Stuttgart match: hitting into the corners (not even at full pace a lot of the time) at any opportunity and hitting down-the-line returns. Unfortunately, she then completely forgot to do it after 5-1 in the first set, and reverted back to the aimless bashing onto the middle of the baseline which she did in her matches against Aza in the AO and IW, which allowed Aza to not move and use her great reaction times to just flick everything back in and move Maria around the court. Never mind -- you'll get her next time Mash. :tears:

Well done to Vika :yeah: First player of Generation Suck to make 2 slam finals. Even if she's still not the most talented of the young ones, those who are more talented had better start taking some lessons from her in mental toughness.

There were a few pretty winners sprinkled in the set but they could hardly overcome the mind-boggling errors and the overall poor play that filled most of the set, especially for Maria.I think the errors were just down to Vika successfully wearing Maria down. She made some bad errors at the end because she could not get her feet into position anymore, especially because Vika's returns were taken early and homed in on the baseline. There were some big and wild misses, but it was because she was going for shots that were not entirely on, and she had to do that to avoid getting into long rallies with Vika.

Even then, both players had positive winners/UEs ratio in the third set.

Maria's ad court serve was laughably bad, but she almost compensated for it with fantastic deuce court serving.

People pissing about Azarenka's statistics are frustrated, pressed souls. Maria played amazing tennis to go up 4-1 first set, while Azarenka was playing one of her worst sets in recent years. 1W to 9UEs is not something you normally see from her, Maria's level dropped slightly towards the end of the first set but Azarenka was still too shit to take advantage. Her hitting only 19 winners was largely due to that first set where she was hardly even playing tennis. Contrary to that dire first set, she started getting it together slowly at the start of the second set, ROS improved and helped her gain the upperhand in rallies which she would continue on to boss, 10W to 3UEs is extraordinary for someone who was hitting with so much depth and closer to the lines from midway 2nd set like Azarenka was. Maria's uncharacteristic nervosity IMO played a part in losing her grip on the match, she knew once Azarenka's ROS and depth of shot started firing trouble would follow immediately. Third set could've been a much easier affair for Azarenka had she not bunked so many easy shots which would've gained her the break advantage, she actually wasted a ton of opportunities to get a break. Like 3 consecutive service games of Maria's went on for 8+ minutes. Vika's miss on that FH drive volley and FH sitter which would've given her a break = This should also be a testament to Azarenka's ROS being better than Sharapova's ROS, Vika sailed through her service games most of the time in that 3rd set. Vika's defensive work in some rallies of the 3rd set was astonishing as well.

I feel like the right player won this match, the endless amount of opportunities Azarenka wasted up until 5-4 made that third set much closer than it should've been. Maria maintained quite the OK level throughout this match I thought, this is how she needs to play Vika all the time anyway. I found it to be a great match TBH.

FUCKING DITCH THAT DRIVE VOLLEY VIKA.

I'm actually quite surprised people are praising Maria for her mental toughness in this match. If anything, the fact Vika stayed much more composed and mentally tough than Masha was the decisive factor. Yes, Maria saved a lot of service games from deuce, but the only reason she had to get into those scraps in the first place is because her focus was all over the place (there were two games in the third set where she had a 40-0 lead and turned into a deucefest), and she was mentally AWOL in all Vika's service games, bashing all her returns into the net.

This is one of the VERY few matches in 2011 and 2012 where I've felt Maria was the better player in a match yet come out on the losing end (there's been far more matches where she was the worse player but pulled through on mental toughness and experience). The only other one I can think of that's like this is the Miami final against Radwanska, where she was hitting winners at will at most points in the match yet shat her pants both times she had to serve to stay in the sets.

No, because when she was focussed in the 3rd set, she was still playing tennis that was better than Azarenka's. Case in point being that service game of Vika's at (I think) 2-2, where Maria made 3 unforced errors on the return, then hit 3 consecutive winners.

And before someone tries to turn this into me being bitter and saying Vika didn't "deserve" to win the match  Vika absolutely DID deserve to win the match, because mental toughness is a part of the sport and she was much better in that department than Maria today (didn't I already acknowledge that Maria has gutted out numerous wins on mental toughness alone in the past couple of years?).

Vika's just too consistent for Maria right now on HC's. Masha can reach higher levels, but she can sink lower too...and Vika's just relentless...doesn't give Maria any room to breathe. Amazing.

Chris 84
Sep 7th, 2012, 10:27 PM
No, because when she was focussed in the 3rd set, she was still playing tennis that was better than Azarenka's. Case in point being that service game of Vika's at (I think) 2-2, where Maria made 3 unforced errors on the return, then hit 3 consecutive winners.

And before someone tries to turn this into me being bitter and saying Vika didn't "deserve" to win the match  Vika absolutely DID deserve to win the match, because mental toughness is a part of the sport and she was much better in that department than Maria today (didn't I already acknowledge that Maria has gutted out numerous wins on mental toughness alone in the past couple of years?).

well, whatever. i'd just argue that you can always do that and make someone's UEs be the result of a "loss of focus". to an extent, that is exactly what UEs are. i think most people would agree that if maria and vika were at the top of their games, maria would probably win. but vika maintained a good, consistent level, and whether it was focus or not, vika looked to me to be the better player.

I mentioned in another thread that when Sharapova stepped to the line to serve for the first set at 5-1, I was thinking it didn't matter becuase Azarenka was going to win the match anyway. I was convinced Azarenka would win this match right from the beginning, simply because I thought her consistent level from beginning to end would trump Sharapova's highs and lows, that proved to be the case.

I was not impressed at all today with the level of net play from both players. The amount of times Sharapova had a mid court ball to hit and come in, and on almost every ocassion hit and retreated to the baseline, only coming in when it was a really high floating ball which appeared easy. And neither player would hit a smash or bounce smash, but these strange swing volleys where they let the ball drop too much, both messed up a couple of those today when on top of the net.

Show us the match where Sharapova makes many net approaches. She just doesn't, she prefers to lose with her errors from the baseline then put pressure on the opponent.

That lousy returning in the final set was karma for that AO semi, where Petra had Maria on the ropes in most of her service games in the 3rd set but then blew all her BP's with horrific errors

Vika :yeah: Not a fan but it's good for the WTA to have a #1 performing at the Slams, though let's just see what happens in the final before writing that in stone.

LOL

First set must have been 1-6 , so much dominating))) She won this match because Pova became tired very quickly in this heat especially after these two 3set matches.

and Serena will serve 24 aces in Final just mixing serves wide and in T .... Vika can't return serves wide if not guessing

Victoria was awful in the first set pretty much like her SF in London (Olympics). Her forehand was atrocious and I'm not even speaking about her serve --

Once Victoria caught her game, Maria started overplaying everything because she knew against a better playing Vika none of what she was doing earlier would really suffice. She would need to go for more because of more rallies, Victoria hitting with better quality disallowing her easy shots etc.

This match reminds me a lot of Del Potro/Djokovic last night (who was overdoing everything too for most) -- against Victoria and Djokovic playing their best simple tennis doesn't suffice, you almost have to be playing 200-300% of your normal abilities reason why they only lost to shot-makers in one of the form of their lives (Tsonga, Li etc.) --

But this is difficult to reproduce time after time and they will get beat like 9 times of 10 --

Vikapower
Sep 7th, 2012, 10:59 PM
^Everyone knows that Maria had a higher peak level on hard courts than Vika. This doesn't mean she plays better tennis since she can't replicate it consistently. It means she plays high-risk tennis and can go on streaks. What makes Vika tough on the surface, especially for Maria, is that she can maintain her level point after point.

Yes, 100%.

I think the errors were just down to Vika successfully wearing Maria down. She made some bad errors at the end because she could not get her feet into position anymore, especially because Vika's returns were taken early and homed in on the baseline. There were some big and wild misses, but it was because she was going for shots that were not entirely on, and she had to do that to avoid getting into long rallies with Vika.

Yes.

it terms of rivalries it was. both players either broke even or + on their ufe/w stats and it was a dramatic 3-setter so the crowd got what they payed for. give me that over a scrubbing anyday to promote the tour
