This seems to be pure baseline power tennis, and Bartoli is winning by hitting harder and deeper. The depth of her shots was insane.

That said, Sharapova has proven she can hold her level of play. Bartoli has proven she often doesn't. The smart bet is Sharapova plays the same way tomorrow, and Bartoli plays worse.

OTOH, Bartoli is actually in shape right now. About in the kind of shape Ivanovic was, four years ago, but the point in Bartoli's case is 'not fat', as opposed to 'slender'.

She's been playing pretty well. And nothing I've seen from Sharapova post-shoulder indicates she has an answer to Bartoli playing this way. Sharapova only plays one way.

Sharapova did not have much(zip) on her shots today, maybe a good night sleep with will give her more energy tomorrow.

She had lots balls landing way inside in the base line, very close to the service box.

That is why the rain delay can only be an upside for her.

Marion must have asked for tips from Serena Williams to start this match at this humiliating fashion :oh:

Reminded me of her match against Petkovic at AO2011.

As much as this may help Sharapova, its just as likely to help Marion too. She's got a double break. It would take a lot for her not to win this set. Marion is a much better player mentally than Petrova has even been. She should close out the set easily regardless of Sharapova.

Sharapova will always have issues with her serve. Marion knows from today to step up and pressure the serve from the first point. She'll get her DFs. The time will also give her extra sleep or resty as much as Sharapova. As long as she is prepared to play the same way, she's the favorite for this match.

i. e. givebacks.

The estimated ratings on Roddick are too good move that match. Probably givebacks on advertising.

But Sharapova moves the needle too, and ow she's down. Why spilt your audience if you can avoid it?

Of course, the weather went 'the best laid plans of mice and men' ....

Thanks for the analysis, we here in Canada didn't get to see any of this coverage..had to watch Gasquet/Ferrer tilt so can't comment on why Marion is leading but she's a smart gal, yeah, plays quirky tennis that makes you think....how did she do that? So today more rain expected but hopefully they can get this match in.:D

I hope Marion comes out like a bullet today and wipes out Pova in 2.

She's never beaten Maria, I believe the H2H is 0-4. Would be a good one to tick off the list!:p

It´s the wind and maybe also the colder conditions? With Sharapova´s balltoss it kills her serve and her whole game starts to break down. When her serve is working she can be special and her groundgame follows. Even when she won the French Open there was the cold windy mess with Zakopalova. Put her on the court with a better player (despite Zakoplaova playing well) and she´ll probably go home that day, despite having been the best red clay player of the season. If it is not windy today, I predict Barotli will hang onto the first set 6-4 (it´s 15-30 on serve already right?) and then Sharapova wins 6-3 6-2. If it is cold and windy Bartoli can win this, if she re-produces anything close to her form of the last three sets.

There's a chance the whole day gets wiped out. There's more of a chance that matches have significant delays mid-match.

Damn she was playing out of this world  Well, do the same stuff when the match continues and then another rain delay and then another 4-0 :oh:

How many times have they played before....I feel like this is a good matchup for Marion, because Sharapova hits hard all the time. Marion handles pace pretty well, and she can change the direction well, as well as hit some wicked angles pulling opponents off court. And Sharapova still isn't a great mover
