31 - 7.

Serena Williams just played one of the best matches of the year.

She is the clear favourite.

I really have to say that it is kinda disappointing and moving (in a bad way) to see Errani-Kerber at the same time with one short ball after another.

Serena was so good. Pure perfection.

I'm convinced that the people who are talking about how terrible it is that Hlavackova got to this point or how embarrassed Kiri should be for losing to her didn't watch a single point of the match. Andrea didn't even play poorly. It wasn't as though she just gave Serena every game with error after error. She averaged about 1 UE per game which isn't bad for someone who plays her style of tennis. In fact I think there were times in the second set where Andrea was playing better than she did when she beat Kirilenko.

It's just that Serena was so completely dominant and unbeatable today that she would've given almost anyone on tour a club level scoreline, no matter how good they were.

I just hope Andrea doesn't go on the walkabout that Petra Cetkovska did after Ana beat her 0 & 0 in the French Open 4th round in 2008 because she doesn't have years to give up to a shot to her confidence. So hopefully she can turn it around in dubs and have another good showing with Lucie.

It was actually much more embarassing for Sharapova and Azarenka, who were humiliated at the Olympics (and in Madrid) despite being TOP5 single players, unlike Andi, who is top5 in doubles, but not even top50 in singles.

It was a good match with some good rallies and strong hitting despite the scoreline. It was the first time I saw an Adrea's single match and she has a nice game ( unlike in double where I always have the feeling that Lucie is the one who carries the team). Great effort from Andrea getting to the last 16 best players after some many times failed to make the main draws. She got some big money for this run as well.:D

Congrats Serena for getting to the QF. Keep your focus then the trophy is yours. :bounce:

Serena's biggest worry was boredom, not that Hlavakova played badly, at all. How many winner service returns for Serena? A dozen? And about another 12 of Serena's groundstrokes hit the lines? Geez! It's hard to judge her harshly when she is not able to get into a rally even when serving.

This is the USO, not Cincy. Just because Serena walks slowly between points doesn't mean that she's bored. Hlavackova didn't play badly, she actually had a dozen game points. Not onlyy did Serena play very well but she was extremely focused to save every single game point. She sure wanted that double bagel. :worship:

I saw some positives in Hlavakova's game, especially in that she never gave up and her body language was the same the last point as on the first. Her serve actually looked pretty good. Its just that Serena was on another planet today.

It'll be interesting to see where Andrea goes from here. She was #82 before this tournament, up 30 spots from the beginning of the year and this may bring her to the 70s or even the high 60s. She's been playing a lot of qualifiers and made the third round at Cincy a couple of weeks ago. She's been a top doubles player for a few years and this may help her singles game.

Actually I was concerned because before the match Mary Carillo told everybody that we didn't know what Serena was up against in this match. Obviously she was implying that there was a chance that Serena would be beaten today.

Mary C.is in a never ending to find an opponent who can trouble Serena.

I wouldn't take her analysis seriously on this sefiously

Serena was good..patient, collected..nice.

Yeah I thought so too. She played a very controlled match to me, not going for too much, even her serve percentage was low.

Andrea:hug: She was clearly hampered, but she was out there trying at least. Serena was too good.

Serena's biggest worry was boredom, not that Hlavakova played badly, at all. How many winner service returns for Serena? A dozen? And about another 12 of Serena's groundstrokes hit the lines? Geez! It's hard to judge her harshly when she is not able to get into a rally even when serving.Still, I wonder how folks would judge her "ground game" though? :tape:

I disagree. Olympic Wimbledon, Charleston, Madrid. Now, now that is playing well for Serena standards.

A year ago, Serena would have given herself a B-

That would have been a very rude and dismissive thing to say to a huge crowd after they watched her double bagel her opponent.

Maybe dsanders will make a thread about it. :tape:

A big difference between Makarova and Hlavackova was showed in this match, both have great games but Hlavackova edges her in attitude. Hlavackova was really still fighting despite the scoreline, though i thought she should have broken Serena on that last game if she wasn't too desperate to get a game, though i don't blame her.

You are so right. I was just about to write this. Serena is very mindful (as she should be) of her past bad moments here (some self-inflicted). She is keen on keeping things positive, giving the other player credit for her play (true or not), and she is REALLY, REALLY trying to work the crowd and thank them for their support. She is playing to the crowd in a way she has never done before. This is a good technique and frankly it may come in handy in one of the upcoming matches.

It shows a more mature and reflective side to her personality.

My poor soul, how the hell did Hlackova make the R16 of this event. :help: I remember now seeing her in some ITF event against Kristina, her technique is piss poor atrocious, both her forehand and backhand motions are Tier V level especially with her extreme grips and all the contortions she does with her upper-body to even get the racket face in proper position for contact ; I mean even my 3/4 semi-western forehand would give Serena much more difficulties in pace, depth, spins... than this player in this loonytunes of a match.

 :help: I'm not even mentioning her 360° around the world arm motion in attempt to slice that would break a Goliath's shoulder. Girl, please. Yikes. Kristina should really knock herself on the head for having lost to this player even once.

This is a great accomplishment for Andrea Hlavackova to get so far into fourth round on her first US Open. For some reason, she might be up and down due to injury (tape on her hips.) I hope that I am wrong. Maybe she could recover and improve. Obviously, this is mismatch when she played Serena.

Serena must have been so solid, which should not be in question or Andrea did not prepare well. Both could play a factor. I'm wondering if Andrea and others ever try to watch or play a tape of Serena's performance, especially her recent performance at Wimbledon and London Olympics. This is what I hope Victoria, Maria, Samantha, and others would do if they want to compete and possibly beat Serena.

freefallball
Sep 4th, 2012, 05:29 AM
I don't know how people could say Hlavackova didn't deserve to be in R16. Seriously either you didn't watch the match or you're clueless about tennis. Hlavackova's performance today was really good and quite a few of her serves could have been an ace if her opponent was not Serena. Credits to Hlavackova, she is actually fast enough to return Serena's serve. Some of Serena's serve are so atrociously well placed that absolutely no one had a chance of returning it unless they already knew in advance where the serve is landing.

And Hlavackova peformance today is definitely playing much better than most of TF's favorite players like Li Na or Kvitova or Radwanska or Sam or Caro or Kerber. All these 6 players have been playing like shit for an extremely long time. Only Vika, Sharapova and Serena has managed to play like a real top player this year.

I am not so foolish as to claim that Andy was going to win this match if she was 100%, but you could see she was not moving well. But judging her on yesterday's performance is not fair, because she was up against Serena on a crazy good day and she was less than her best. Pretty much a nightmare scenario for anyone. Vika also won all her matches up to QF with her eyes closed, look what happened when she got a real opponent today, very close. Thing is, if there is a big difference in playing strength big scores will happen even if the better player isn't playing that well.
