Great returning, but I'm not totally sure about the rest of her game today  Forehand was a bit iffy, and her movement and footwork didn't seem as good as in her first 2 matches. I mean obviously I'll take a 6-1 6-1 beatdown over the shitfests she often throws in at this stage of the US Open  but still, she'll have to improve I think.

Serve I'm actually not too worried about - yes some doublefaults, but atleast it was balanced out with some rocket 2006 Vintagepova first serves, which could help in the later rounds.

i'd expect whoever gets out of safarova/petrova to really push her. who knows they could even take her out since she wont have been tested at all

Damn, Maria is proving she doesn't need matchplay going into a slam unlike in the past. She hasn't faced a good opponent yet but Maria in the past would struggle winning any round without matchplay going into a slam. Petra has no strategy playing Maria so I'm expecting Maria to reach the SF comfortably.

For most top players the tournament will start from the 4th round.
None of them has been really tested.

Well done:cheer:
But she wasn't tested at all in first 3 rounds.

She never gets tested in the early rounds because she plays scrubs. This happens in almost every slam. How is that?

Have to improve for who? Her easy 4th round and Petra punching bag? She is winning these next 2 rounds easily, take it to the bank.

Who is playing Azarenka and Serena? not scrubs?

Petrova in 4th round is not a scrub and will be called a challenger (if playing vs Serena) , but vs Masha all opponents by TF are called cakewalkish ,if they are not Williamses

There hasn't been any good consistent counter punchers or retrievers in Maria's path. And, there really aren't any on this side of the draw. Azarenka is the closest you'll see to that as far as consistency goes, but while not slow at all, she's certainly no cheetah out there and defense is not a strong suit.

what's about 4th round ? Minella/Tatishvili vs Masha's opponent Petrova(probably)? and QF /SF for Masha are much tougher than Serena will have

Maria has had 2hrs and 59mins court time over her 3 matches. This could bode well if the heat continues. That's pretty much all you can take away from the tournament so far... Oh and for the most part her serving is strong and she'll hit a patch in the 2nd set.

Mallory showed some promise but clearly needs coaching and experience. After today, tennis probably won't appear in her short list of career opportunities. She played strongly to the end so I am sure she will succeed in life.

Again, Pova came out ready to play from the first point. I enjoy that much more than spending the first 3 to 4 games getting into the match. After a blistering first set annihilation, Pova had a mild Second Set Slump. I think the cause was lack of resistance. Nothing to motivate her to excel.

Good match from Pova!

I expected Mallory“s serve to be better from the reports I“ve read, or she had a lot of respect today? In some rallies she showed she can play an agressive tennis and wants to hit an early winner but overall it looked like it was too much for her mind especially to play such a big match.

Hradecka made Burdette look much better even than I thought.

doesnt surprise me Maria lost a bit focus & was more messy in 2nd set. These early round batterings are rather boring.

I actually liked what I saw from Burdette. Her ground game is very nice and she has lots of firepower. Her volley technique seems fine as well. However, she needs to improve her serve and fitness/movement, but she will do that once she decides to go pro and focuses on tennis 24h.

She should finish her studies at Stanford, then turn pro and work on these things. And then I dont see any reason why she cannot make Top50 or even Top30.

Sharapova played GREAT. I would love to see a SF between an in-form Sharapova and an in-form Azarenka!

Rest Maria!

Not the same round, but Australian Open and Indian Wells should give you an idea how this match-up looks.
