1. Olga Puchkova - already has been in (SE)WTA TOP30, last few years were tough for her. However this year she's showing some signs of promise. First off all Baku SF.
2. Olga Govortsova - beat Radwanska in New Haven but due to her opponent retirement. Even though she plays brainless for most time she can be a tough player
3. Andrea Hlavackova - doubles specialist. One day she had to make her singles breakthrough
4. Silvia Soler-Espinosa - already once made it to R3 last year but isn't it amazing that a player with a game like her can do it?
5. Tsvetana Pironkova - barely wins matches outside grass. Isn't R3 great for her?
6. Kristina Mladenovic - player with a great potential. Two weeks ago won Montreal in doubles but who would have predicted she would beat a seed in Flushing Meadows?
7. Mallory Burdette - primarily a college player. Won some hardcourt challengers in United States so she earned her wc spot and showed in Stanford she can play well against top players (Stanford) but Grand Slam is something different! I'm going with her.
8. Laura Robson - another player with a great potential. Seeing her in R3 is not that surprising seeing that she got a lot of confidence after Olympics
9. Anna Tatishvili - solid player but not that remarkable. Seeing her in R3 is something new but is that really unexpected?
10. Mandy Minella - another R3 for Mandy. She has potential for R4. People call her the worst player in top100 but is that true?

Robson and Mladenovic.

I can't vote for a player that has come through a weak section as being "unexpected". There was always a possibility the likes of Govortsova, Minella or Tatishvili could have a run here with their draws.

I'd have to go with either Robson, Burdette or Mlad (although Mlad was lucky Erakovic was injured).

I literally jaw-dropped when I seen Pironkova in a R3 at non-Wimbledon so I'll go with that

4. Silvia Soler-Espinosa - already once made it to R3 last year but isn't it amazing that a player with a game like her can do it?

 Soler probably isnīt the new big deal and a basher, but from what Iīve seen she is a good counterpuncher with an ability to attack and hit massive winners, itīs not like she is the new Dominguez Lino.

Tatishvili and Minella are the most unexpected for me, but that might be because they are quite "unknown" for me as I didnīt watch them for a more than a few points yet.

I'm most surprised (pleasantly though) by Mladenovic. She's not had good singles results leading up to it and I was surprised she even got the WC so happy to see her in R3 :yeah:

Pauline Parmentier.

And Soler-Espinoza.

The rest is either good enough for 3rd round or had an easy draw.

Soler is hardly a surprise, she made third round last year, and maybe she is not the most talented girl or the next best thing, but she is a nice counterpuncher and she is really brave on court, she always fights, so with a decent draw it won't be that difficult seeing her at that stages

This tournament shows there isnt that much depth. A lot of these sections are very soft.

Robson is in one of the few tough sections, and I'd say her play against Kim ( especially closing the match) was impressive to me.

The others are random, just lucky in the draw. They all could have had Kerber or someone like that as an early round draw

This tournament shows there isnt that much depth.
Compare it to ATP where 125 players entered the tournament without believing they would leave it with the champion's trophy

Mallory 'cause I'd never heard of her (and I bet many others didn't either).

I would say Robson cause she was playing Kimmy in 2nd round.

If you yold me Puchkova would be in USO R3 at the beggining of the year, I would probably laugh. If you told me that about Mallory Burdette would be in USO R3 I would say "Who?"

All the others have either done it before or have good potential so it's no big surprise...

Clearly Robson due to the quality of player she's dismissed...

The Chipmunk is as invincible as she is adorable, so it's actually more surprising that she loses at all.

get rid of pironkova from this poll......she has always been an unfulfilled potential......she is greatness and sexiness combined in motion......

Robson because of the players she was up against.

It's either Burnette or Mladenovic. Burnette, a college player making 3rd round with a WC is a really pleasant surprise. Mladenovic has been completely useless on the professional tour, for her to finally make a breakthrough at a slam MD of all things is ridiculous.

Soler-Espinosa is a pretty decent player with good groundstrokes you know  she's not a typical Spanish moonballer.

Mallory.

I'm also always surprised when Minella wins matches in a MD. She just ins't good at all, in my opinion.
