Australia's Next Top Model judge Charlotte Dawson is in hospital after a row on Twitter escalated into a torrent of abuse.

Just hours before she was taken to Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital emergency ward in the early hours of today, Dawson admitted the social media brawling was taking a toll.

I always bite back, I know it's my problem, but I can't just let it go without having something to say.

Dawson, who campaigns against cyber bullying by retweeting abusive posts, has been the target of vicious Twitter attacks recently.

Embroiled in weeks of online aggression on Twitter in which her well documented battles with depression were raised, Dawson tweeted about 2am today: "Hope this ends the misery" and "You win x."

Police and an ambulance were called to Dawson's Darlinghurst apartment at 3.05am and Dawson was then admitted to St Vincent's.

"She's sitting up in bed, she's expected to make a full recovery and she asks that her privacy be respected," a hospital spokesman said.

In recent weeks Dawson has claimed she has been the victim of repetitive bullying on Twitter, telling this website last night: "I always bite back, I know it's my problem, but I can't just let it go without having something to say."

While Dawson appeared to be handling the situation well, she admitted: "It has certainly taken a toll, and, yes, you're right, I probably should just ignore it, but that's never been my style."

Dawson was with her close friend, fashion designer Alex Perry, and Sydney blogger Jo Thornely, who has co-written her memoirs, which are about to be published.

Yesterday, Monash University suspended one of its staff and said it was investigating a Twitter exchange between Tanya Heti, a director of its Gateway Scholars mentoring program, Dawson and one of her followers, Bernadette Casey.

A spokesman at Chic Celebrity, the company that manages Dawson, said she was recovering in hospital but declined to comment on whether the visit was related to abusive tweets directed at her since the row.

Ms Heti's Twitter account has been removed from the website.

The case has outraged Twitter users, who have called for compassion in social media.

Mama Mia website publisher Mia Freedman wrote: "There needs to be a way for abusive trolls on Twitter to be held accountable for their harassment. It'd be illegal to do that in person."

ABC 7.30 presenter Leigh Sales wrote: "I'm appalled at people's cruelty."

People who abuse others on Twitter could fall foul of the Commonwealth Crimes Act, which prohibits using "a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence or for the purposes of a threat".

But it is the fact many people choose to remain anonymous that causes difficulty.

University of Canberra senior lecturer in journalism and communications Jason Wilson said people could be motivated to post anonymous abuse at strangers for a range of motivations, including attention and notoriety.

"The anonymity makes it a lot easier to kind of confront a stranger with that sort of abuse."

He said women, celebrities and social media newcomers were more likely to suffer vitriolic abuse online.

"The question for me is how do we respond to it. Not so much why do people do it; that's a matter for psychologists and psychiatrists. My recommendation is, to the extent you can, ignore it [abuse] and see it as more of a system fault rather than it being about you."

This made me sick, I also quickly scanned Charlotte Dawson's twitter page and it made me feel even sicker. Thoughts? What can be done?

Bottom line is she didn't have to look at all these abusive tweets - she knew they would probably upset her but she did it anyway.

She didn't bring none of it on herself either. How did she think some New Zealanders would react when she called it "small, nasty and vindictive" :rolls:.

Now go get another botox and lip injection Charlotte .

Well, Probably best to stay of Twitter, though she is a "Celeb",

I don't know, if she has a history of flying over the cuckoo's nest, perhaps don't use twitter.

the nets full of viciousness.

that bee said, cyber bullying should be taken more seriously, and I hope she makes a recovery

I don't think she expected a few New Zealanders to wish death upon her? Kind of proving her point isn't it? They had a chance to be the bigger people.

Given that she encouraged her followers to kill one Twitter follower about a week or so ago, I have no sympathy for her if she's now complaining about cyberbullying (particularly after essentially calling her birthplace a massive shithole). Also, she's 46-years-old, so maybe the best thing for her to do would be to grow up and delete her account.

Oh, and now she's giving a TV interview this weekend about her "bullying experience". Yeah, something tells me this one just wants publicity.

I dont remember her encouraging her followers to kill another twitter member?

Yeah its easy to say stay off Twitter.. its just a sad fact that someone can be bullied off twitter in the first place. She's was doing something for bulling in general, some sort of press so I guess she was staying on it for a reason. She probably didnt want to be forced off twitter and then it all got too much. Either way nobody should be sent some of the things people sent to her.

Some of the stuff people sent to her was disgusting.

I don't know why I say "a week or so ago" when it happened back in May. Anyway, she said "somebody please kill Brian boy (name of some Twitterer) please please please" which admittedly isn't as serious as some of the stuff she's been sent, but if you take that and some of the other stuff she's written, it's not as if she's entirely innocent.

I would be more on her side with regards to cyberbullying if I didn't think she was just using this as an excuse to get her name in the papers.

The way some people act on the internet, because they can hide behind a computer screen, is disgusting & something needs to be done to police it!

Not really a helpful solution, the cyber bullies have won if people log off completely. Especially seeing as though Dawson is campaigning against cyber bullying. Hiding is not the solution. It's almost like saying, the only solution to school yard bullying is to leave the school.

Actually, it's nothing at all like that. Going on Twitter is a choice. Going to school is not.

Which school you go to is the choice. Fundamentally there is still a decision to be made, going to another school/getting off twitter.

Leave Twitter if it gets to you that badly, although as a "celeb" I guess she is more interested in self-promotion and thus stays on twitter.
