NEW YORK (AP) – Rafael Nadal (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/People/Athletes/Tennis/Rafael+Nadal) is heading to the Big Apple (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Big+Apple) to play tennis — only it will be for an exhibition match next March, not the U.S. Open (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/U.S.+Open) next week.

Rafael Nadal will miss the U.S. Open due to injury, but he is scheduled to play in New York in March in the BNP Paribas Showdown.

Nadal, who pulled out of the year's final Grand Slam (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Events+and+Awards/Sports/Grand+Slam) tournament because of knee trouble, is scheduled to face 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden on March 4. Nadal has won 11 Grand Slam tournament titles.

Serena Williams (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/People/Athletes/Olympic+Sports/Serena+Williams), a 14-time major champion, will play top-ranked Victoria Azarenka (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/People/Athletes/Tennis/Victoria+Azarenka) that night in another exhibition match at the arena used by the NBA's Knicks and NHL's Rangers.https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-n30Y5nHsNLw/UDXhPQkLEmI/AAAAAAAAHYE/cD2nHksAlxc/s275/sugarpova.gif

I don't know why they keep trying to make Azarenka happen. SHE IS SO BORING

Azarenka in? Surely earplug producers must be happy about the sales spike in NYC next March.

Why not Serena/Maria in an exho. That would be awesome for two reasons:
1) Maria may stand a chance :oh:
2) They have such fun personalities! Vika is fun but is overshadowed by Serena's personality.

Nadal is boring. Roger/Andy will be way more entertaining. At least Serena will be there to keep them awake.

Good news for the wta. Whether you like her or not, Azarenka is likely going to be near the top of the game for years to come so she needs to keep showing different sides of her personality to the public. It is important for the Wta that Vika is at least well-known.

I do not think Nadal is boring hes not as big personality as roger for sure but he makes me laugh in those exhos he did for haiti etc.

They are assuming Azarenka will still be top ranked over Maria and Aga.

When are they going to get Stosur and Vera to at this annual showdown?

That would something... fierceness vs discord.
Maria will be forced to play the net, somehting to see I guess

I see Vika serving on Aga's head at the net

Frankly I would think Serena/Sharapova would be a bigger draw than Azarenka. Its ncie they are still promoting indoor tennis in NYC.

The choice of the men is kind of strange, though I like both.

:hearts: I would love to see this!

I can just imagine Serena being all hot and bothered that Maria's there and "accidentally" hit a serve to her.

They don't want to hurt Vika's feeling

Great choice for the women. And Azarenka has a great personality, one of the best on tour so it will be fun :)

The men . I hope JMDP kicks his ass since I hate Rafa and his annoying fans but it will be so boring. I like JMDP but he is so shy and Nadal isn't that fun either, it's going to be so awkward. They should've invited Djokovic

Nadal and Juan Martin can't carry a good enough English conversation to entertain a New York crowd. It will be awkward.

Azarenka needs some urgent PR rehabilitation so that's a golden opportunity for her.
