Since the old thread has gone over the 5,000 post limit, I figure that it needs to be replaced by a shiny new one. So here it is.

Achievements:

Olympic mixed doubles silver medal (w/ Andy Murray)
Singles semi final - Palermo 2012
Grand Slam 4th round - US Open 2012, Wimbledon 2013
Defeated Kim Clijsters in her final singles match
Singles Final - Guangzhou 2012
WTA Newcomer of the year 2012

I'm not sure I agree with Laura entering the Premier level events in the run up to the USO. She'd probably get more matches and points at Dallas than she will at New Haven. But meh, I'm not the one who has to make that call.

always think her schedule is a little bit unreasonable, her ranking can totally get herself into Bell challenge or Tashkent open where she can enter main draw directly but she is going neither of them, she choose guangzhou, toray open, china open...

I can totally understand a player opting to play New Haven instead of Dallas. The temperature is 36°C at 6 in the evening. Might as well play New Haven which weather wise is near enough the same to New York. Plus it is nearer.

Why on earth have a tournament in Dallas in August?

There are lots of things to criticize Laura schedule wise, I don't think this is one of them.

After the US Open she needs to pick up as many points as possible to put herself firmly in the top 100 to set herself up for 2013.

her serve is getting worse and i dont know why

The most likely reasons are injury or changing how she's doing her serve. If it's the former, hopefully it'll pass with some time and rest. If it's the latter, then it's going to get worse before it gets batter... hopefully.

...her first serve in percentage is down to around 35% in set 2...hope the collaboration with Krajan gonna help her:worship:

Laura Robson has managed a result which was "par for the course" although her first serve was "around 35% in set 2". So, as soon as her serve gets better again, we are going to see a great improvement, and I am looking forward to that!

I always think that her serve is a weapon, if she can get them in, she'll need to work on that.
And she's going to need a good draw for USO. 160 points are not easy to defend.

Her serve is a weapon. Unfortunately it's a smooth bore musket, inaccurate, unreliable and in need of a lot of work to bring it up to the standards expected of a modern weapon.

Laura's match today is on Court 4 so unfortunately no stream.
She'll also play doubles with Peer. First match vs Lisicki/Peng.

And happy for the practice with Maria as I'm a fan of both. :cheer:
I hope Laura benefits from it and Maria probably needs practice against leftys as she's playing one first round and she has the potential meeting with Kvitova. I'm not surprised that Maria has respect for Laura's game after their matches.

I'm sorry that my attempt at humour to prick the (what I see as) overoptimism caused offence.

Incidentally, looking at a couple of online bookies, the people who put their money where their mouth is give Laura around an 8% chance today. For what that's worth.

Clijsters is such a great champion and a genuinely lovely woman and I'll be sad to see her go but Laura has finally gotten a HUGE win! OMG

I think this really is special for all of us fans. We have etched her on through the highs and the lows, many of us certainly back to 2008 Wimby juniors like JamieOwen said. I think we've also been waiting for her to get a huge win like this against Kim and it'll be a match we'll all remember for some time :)

Li Na is champion material at the moment and Laura will have to play like she did today to have a chance but if she does then why the hell not, she has the game, we all know :)

I will miss Kim, i didnt appreciate her part timer attitude this year but you realise how much you miss someone when they're gone and this will be the thing with Kimmy

Congrats Laura, you're AMAZING <3

Sean.
Aug 30th, 2012, 12:31 AM
Things I would say about the Li match:

1) Li doesn't return nearly as well as Clijsters, so Laura (providing she serves well) should get free points.

2) Li does not handle pressure that well always, especially if it's an AA match, she really didn't play well for most of the match today.

3) Li did not serve that well today, for the part of the match that I saw. Given how well Laura returned today, this would be critical!

BUT:

4) Li does have Carlos on her side, and, although Laura has improved, she still has work to do and has weaknesses that can be exploited by a tactical genius like Carlos (IF Li can execute)

To be honest, I'm just hoping Laura can go out there and play well and get a respectable result. It's a very different situation now, no one really expected her to beat Kim, but now the pressure is different, I'm very interested to see how she handles it, it will say a lot about her!

Those of us who have been fans since then *or some here even before that to be fair* can really enjoy a win like this more, some people are already hatin and saying here comes the hype blah blah blah KISS MY ASS. Kim is an amazing champion especially at the US Open and Laura played superbly to win this match. :hatoff: to Kim and Good luck vs Li Na Laura.

I'm a fan since she won Wimbledon juniors, I watched the final and loved her game and as well personality in the interview she gave after the match :D

Best match of the women's draw so far. Not just because Laura won but because I think there was quality and drama throughout.

Feel sorry for those with tickets for the night sessions who've seen very one-sided matches so far. I think with this being late in the day possibly some people had left which is a shame as it would have been nice if it was a bit more full in there. But I was slightly surprised how much vocal support Laura was getting. Thought they'd be very much in favour of Kim but it was quite even.

No, please don't. I hate the player subforums. I end up never bothering to check up on Keothavong because her threads are hidden inside the subforum.

As long as there aren't that many British players, a thread in the main forum works fine. If there were tons of new posts every day, then maybe. But there aren't.

We could have a common picture thread in the main forum for all the players for example, or just continue to post inside player thread like now. Same with cheering thread.

pesto
Aug 31st, 2012, 10:15 AM
Another vote against a subforum for now. Anne gets far fewer posts than Bally, despite a similar career, because she's hidden away in a subforum.

If Laura gets so big that posts about her swamp the other British women, then it would be time, but she's not at that level yet. Even if there were two threads for her - one for media and pics and another for discussing her matches, it would still be easy to handle in the main Brit forum.

Sean.

Been thinking more about this match, I suspect that Li will handle the weight of Laura's shot better than Kim did. She's played more matches & is fitter and stronger than Clijsters was. She's also played Kvitova a couple of times recently, which may count for something.

Of course a lot depends on which Li turns up!

Laura has nothing to lose though, I hope for a good match.

The next match will be a fascinating one. Pretty an sure it'll be an AA night match: defending champion vs. tournament darling.

The key will be how well Laura handles Sam's serve and top spin (doubt she'll have faced anything like it before), if she can use her height, time her shots right, get on the return and rush Sam (like Masha does) she really has the game to cause the Aussie some major trouble!

Not seen her play yet, but it sounds like Sam's playing well. Have to say though, the pressure will really ramped up on her, we'll see if she can handle it!

OMMMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I am even more shocked and unbelievably happy than Wednesday night. I never knew that after the horrible draw she got after Crawford that she would make R4. I am so happy for you Laura, those 4 years of hghs and lows and you knew you had it in you and you've proved us all right :)

So happy that we're all here to share it with you !! When Loz hits her first serve, there;s not much any player can do. Li was struggling so much with the pace and direction. Although I dont believe Li played her absolute best, she picked up her game end of second set and beginning of third so it was detrimental for Laura to stay focused and poised and she exceeded that !!!!! Great composure and fantastic attitude. Now go get Stosur :)

P.S Stosur will be a nightmare for Laura but once she gets used to the TS and kick, Laura should be able to cope pretty well :)

I wouldn't read too much into that Olympic mixed match, Sam was awful & the grass dulls a lot of her top spin, it wasn't kicking nearly as much as it does on these courts. Personally, I'm hoping (read: delusionally dreaming) for Laura to make the semis. Mostly because Laura vs Masha in the second week, rather than the second round appeals to me. Petra vs Laura would also be interesting.

But yes Stosur is a beatable player. But then, I remember saying that about Stycova at Palermo.

Sexysova

Stosur is beatable but she seems to be playing in a very good form this week  I would prefer Laura to play Kvitova (well, I dislike Kvitova) but mainly because Petra is not playing as good as Stosur this week :)

of course, Laura can win but it will be very tough, Stosur could mentally fail tho.

KeysisGOAT

Well Stosur is the defending champion, so her playing well should be expected. But the fact that Robson's her opponent has got to have thrown her for a loop both because she'd have been mentally preparing for Na or Kim and because Robson's turned into quite the giant killer.

Um. Aren't we talking about tennis forum's Vikapower (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=22120896&postcount=1462), rather than tennis's Vika (http://www.wtatennis.com/page/Player/Info/0,,12781~11289,00.html)?

It seems a bit unusual for a Petra fan to dislike Laura's game, most fans see substantial similarities.

Just can't get over that unreal forehand at 5-5 to set up the MP, it just looks like it's going out all the way up to the last moment, what a shot in that situation, one of the shots of the tournament so far.

Can any poster who speaks Mandarin be able to translate what the interviewer asks Li here:

(It might not have anything to do with Laura, but its the pre-match interview and it seems she gets asked a really awkward question, just interested to know what it is) :)

http://www.usopen.org/en_US/video/2012-08-31/01397de0d7f80000063d.html?promo=home

She said that Na was defeated in R1 in the last 2 USO, and this time she got to R3, they asked if there're any changes, especially with the new coach.
Na replied why they always have to ask the sharp questions (well sharp might not be the best word) and they could see the changes on court.
The journalist went on to say that she watched Na's performance in RG this year in person, and felt that she could control herself better now and what made the difference.
Na replied that she felt strange that neither controling herself or not was right, felt like that everything she did was wrong (in the eyes of the press).

That were just stupid questions:o

Another vote against a subforum for now. Anne gets far fewer posts than Bally, despite a similar career, because she's hidden away in a subforum.

If Laura gets so big that posts about her swamp the other British women, then it would be time, but she's not at that level yet. Even if there were two threads for her - one for media and pics and another for discussing her matches, it would still be easy to handle in the main Brit forum.

Just to go back to this discussion, Robson's got more posts in her threads than Bally and Anne combined (just counting the Anne subforum), and only about 400 (the actual figure is 416 after this post) figure is shy of having more than Bally, Anne and Heather combined. Given how Laura already gets a disproportionate share of the traffic (her old thread has garnered over four times the number of views than Bally's has, and more than every other thread in this section combined) that gap isn't going to increase until this thread has about 30 more pages. Which should only take a few months.

I would vote in favor of a sub forum, now she seems to be gaining fans rapidly, I can see activity in here getting a bit much for just one thread.

It would be nice to have a thread for photos, general discussion and live score cheering, to keep things ordered and tidy.

There are hardly too many comments in this thread to keep up. Even in busy times like now, it's maybe a page a day.

Laura's thread is clearly more busy than Anne's subforum, but that's an argument to remove Anne's subforum rather than add another forum.

And why can't we have 2-3 Laura threads in the main forum? Strawberries & Cream doesn't even run to a second page yet.

Not on Ashe? THE FUCK?

Hewitt/Ferrer will be a slug fest too! She could be on late!

I've been thinking more about the match, I wouldn't be surprised if Sam gets of to an early head start, before Laura gets used to the TS. Remember what happened against Clijsters? She was struggling with how quickly the ball was coming through the court to start with.

Having said that, by the end, vs. Kim & Na, she had SO much time on the ball, I'm hopeful she will be able to adjust. Footwork will be absolutely KEY though, and that's not always her strongest point!

Sexysova

yes, I expect a slow start as well, but on the other side, Laura's footwork and movement have improved rapidly recently.. we'll see, she can only surprise :)

Yeah, BlueTrees is a pretty OK guy once you get past the disliking Robson stage. He actually said to me that he admits that Robson is a better player than most of his favourites, but the more vocal fans and the hype she's gotten over the years annoy him. Which is fair in my book. I certainly find extremely vocal fans of anyone annoying. Which is why Spice is on my ignore list.

Sep 2nd, 2012, 02:41 PM
I agree with you but it's annoying for those fans who have supported her since she came to prominence, we were always going to take to heart anything he said, he should have directed his trolling towards the people that over-hyped her or whatever not Laura herself

Bad news from Nick's picks. I usually don't notice these until after they've happened, but I was looking out for this one. Let's start with the context.

Nick’s Pick – This will be a great match. Kim takes this one.

http://blog.imgacademies.com/2012/08/31/nicks-picks-us-open-day-5/
Nick’s Pick- Li Na will not miss; Laura must gamble and go for winners. This match goes to Li Na

http://blog.imgacademies.com/2012/09/02/nicks-picks-first-sunday-at-the-us-open/
Edge to Stosur but I look for another victory from Robson.

Whatever that means, but it's not as unequivocal as the first two. Still, we're not superstitious in these parts, are we?

I'm so excited for this match. I think Laura has a game that will cause Stosur all kinds of trouble, if she's on. However, if Stosur's serve and forehand are on, then there may be nothing Laura can do. Hopefully Laura attacks Stosur's backhand and waits for a short ball from that wing.

Well, she doesn't want the entire tour thinking she's that much better than the rest of the sluts so she intentionally tanked to make them look better by extension.
