I've read in GM that Robert will not coach Lindsay in 2003 and i'm pretty shocked! we'll find out during Sydney who'll be her next coach, hopefully not Jon! :fiery:
Dec 27th, 2002, 03:09 AM
Do your best ;)
Dec 28th, 2002, 03:59 AM
Players who aren't participating in the Hopman Cup (which starts tomorrow here) will start arriving next week for the big event so we'll start to find info leaking out regarding Lindsay from about then - and yes we'll find out if she's got a new coach or not then too :)
Dec 28th, 2002, 01:43 PM

Dec 30th, 2002, 11:53 AM
Come on Linds - time to get going to a title again.
Do hope she has not split with Rob, I think she still needs him. Don't think it will work so well if its Jon coaching her - he does not seem to bring her much luck tennis wise, althougj I think he is lovely!
GO GO GO LINDSAY
Dec 31st, 2002, 10:54 AM
yes Jan,Jon is lovely and very cute but he must be just her boyfriend not also her coach! :o
anyway...GOOD LUCK TO LINDSAY!!! :bounce: :bounce:
Jan 2nd, 2003, 11:52 AM
Happy New Year ALL.
Val have you heard any more about the Lindsay and Rob coaching situation?
Lets Go Lindsay
Jan 2nd, 2003, 12:26 PM
It's all pretty hush hush re: Robert - Lindsay's arrived though :)
thanks nadine, wow Lindsay is in ur hometown!go there to watch her!
Jan 3rd, 2003, 09:18 AM
I shall try to get there and watch her :)
I'll be situated there from Sun -> Sat so hopefully I'll see her in the night matches when I'm off duty - and who knows she might wander into the autograph tent when I'm on duty :)
Jan 3rd, 2003, 11:58 AM
Enjoy yourself gossipcom and give some cheers for uswon't you.
Jan 4th, 2003, 03:59 AM
Happy New Year and Go Lindsay!!
Jan 4th, 2003, 01:12 PM
Lindsay's draw is horrible..but Good Luck to her anyway! :)
Jan 4th, 2003, 11:16 PM
GOOOOOO LINDSAY! I hope this will be a great start to a great year!
Jan 5th, 2003, 04:28 AM
Lindsay beat Nicole P 6/3 6/3. The rumours about the change of coach are true - Rick Leach will be coaching her this year (keeping it all in the family) :)
Jan 5th, 2003, 07:48 AM
yay!!! go Lindsay!!!! kick hantuchova's (most prolly to advance) ass in the quarters :D.... btw i'm kinda disappointed lindsay changed coach because i feel that robert handles lindsay very well... but i'm not sure how long robert has taken lindsay for....
Jan 5th, 2003, 07:54 AM
bis, Robert was her coach for 7 years and the split was amicable - seriously, with those two I wouldn't have seen it anything but that - because they play at the same club for starters, you're still going to see the person, the last thing you want is an ugly split.
That being said Rick as a coach should be interesting - he was a v. good ATP player especially in doubles, having conjured up a few AO GS wins in particular.
Jan 5th, 2003, 07:58 AM
he didnt win AO Mixed Doubles with Corina!it was Ellis Ferreira! :o
btw he won 9 Grand Slams in Double (not in MIxed) so i'm sure he's a very good coach for LIndsay but still I Miss Rob!
Jan 5th, 2003, 08:01 AM
the fact that rick being jon's brother, may undoubtedly lead to some kind of leniency in the relationship of rick and lindsay herself as rick may feel burderned or bad if he has to tell lindsay off at times....
Jan 5th, 2003, 08:04 AM
i think Lindsay can be ultra-motivated by Rick, cos he's his future brother in law and she maybe wants to prove him she's still a Champion,so maybe a new coach can help her to refind her aggressivity (?) and her killer-instinct that she lost in last autumn.
Jan 5th, 2003, 08:11 AM
is there any record of rick already having coached pro players?
Jan 5th, 2003, 08:24 AM
As long as Rick doesn't get Jon to come to the matches I'll be happy :)
bis, Rick was the assistant coach under his father Dick @, who was a very very good coach, at USC, so the experience he should have gained from that should help him with Lindsay. It will be interesting if he will keep on with his assistant coaching role at USC or go full time with Lindsay on tour.
Plus when you look at it, Lindsay already has the training, skills, etc, it's just the fixing the errors up here and there, that is needed. Rob did a fantastic job with that and I'm sure Rick will do the same thing :)
Jan 5th, 2003, 09:26 AM
yeah but he's only an assistant coach in a university.... i mean that doesn't sound convincing to me..... i really think lindsay should find a reallly good coach - one who's had tons of experience coaching pros..... or maybe lindsay should not split with robert... i feel that their relationship is solid....
Jan 5th, 2003, 09:31 AM
Lindsay isnt an idiot, and Rob neither.if they split up,it's for Lindsay's good!and maybe Rick is the only one who can manage with Jon!i mean: if Jon wants to come at tourneys with Lindsay,or if he distracts her,or if they go out and comeback late etc...Rick is the only one who can say to Jon "no Jon u cant do it,Lindsay needs to be focused,u cant go out etc" instead another coach cant say that,an other coach cant dictate discipline to them!
sorry for my bad english,i hope u see what I mean!
Jan 5th, 2003, 09:45 AM
i see what u mean but i mean certainly the reason lindsay split with rob can't be that she doesn't want jon to come to see her matches
Jan 5th, 2003, 09:50 AM
he he Val - totally agree about the Jon thing and I understood you 100%.
bis my guess is from all reports is that they split because Robert wanted to spend more time with his family, plus with Kaes' getting better and better my guess like Val's will be he'll probably take care of his coaching when he hits the senior circuit in 2 years.
re: Rick and being an associate coach.
When you talk about USC you're talking about one of the best Universities in America, and when it comes to College Tennis USC rules the roost. So for Rick to be associated with that University and to have seen the groundwork that his father Dick had set out there for the record number of years he was coaching there, would have to only justify the reason why Lindsay took him on as her new coach.
Also the fact that Rick is still a doubles player on the circuit, would also be an added bonus in the power game against the Williams sisters, etc.
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:11 AM
Rick played doubles until last year,he is now retired?
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:15 AM
Well Rick always says he's retiring ;)
But to my knowledge since the end of last year he hasn't played any tournaments.
That being said it wouldn't surprise me if he picked up a racquet for the Men's doubles at the AO. Though I think the commitment date has passed :)
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:19 AM
i dont think he'll be committed for the Men's doubles cos he has to watch Lindsay's matches and practise with her!what if the day he has to play double,Lindsay has to play singles at the same time?LOL :o
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:21 AM
now that you mention that it wouldn't be the first time that's happened to coach / players - it use to happen a hell of a lot when Tony Roche was coaching Pat Rafter <g> and I think it happened with Lleyton Hewitt and Darren Cahill - it's when it reaches the over 35 age group :)
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:23 AM
now Cahill is coaching Agassi though!and Lleyton is coached by an other former player like Stoltenberg!
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:27 AM
yeah us Aussies are everywhere :)
Okay found another article on Lindsay's win (mentions Rick in it):
I've got all these articles on my website (well linked off my website).
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:30 AM
Lindsay on Rick "He's a great guy, a future brother-in-law. It's important to find a coach that is of a high stature and very respectable and a great person."
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:36 AM
Well Done Lindsay!
Jan 5th, 2003, 11:07 AM
Nadine, can u give me the link of ur site?
Jan 5th, 2003, 11:09 AM
I'm off to bed - in pain from standing so long @ Fanfest <g> and it'll only get better tomorrow :)
Jan 5th, 2003, 11:10 AM
the page about australian season doesnt work for me :(
Jan 5th, 2003, 11:16 AM

No stage fright as Davenport steps out of the wings
By Ben Wyld
January 6 2003
The first match of the season can be a tricky affair. Aside from the pressure of wanting to begin the year on the right note, there's the unanswered question of fitness, and the prospect of muscles tightening at a crucial stage.
American Lindsay Davenport showed no "first-night nerves" in her first-round match yesterday, cutting short Australian Nicole Pratt's involvement in little over an hour and straight sets, 6-3, 6-3."There are nerves to try and start the year off on a good foot," Davenport said after her first match in Australia for two years. "I haven't played a match in two months, so you are unsure of yourself."
If there was uncertainty in Davenport's mind, it didn't show in her performance - the trademark power from the back of the court was in evidence, and her occasional forays to the net were met with success. But Davenport was conscious of her unforced error count.
"There were a few too many errors - nothing that can't be worked on . . . though everything I did out there was great," she said.
"I'm moving well, I'm fit. I just need matches to get back to the level I want to be at."
But if it's the same Davenport on the court, albeit a trimmed-down version, there are differences in the off-court Davenport.
There's the personal happiness attributed to her recent engagement to Jon Leach, as well as a coaching change - to her future brother-in-law and former No 1 men's doubles player, Rick Leach.
"He's been helping me with my game . . . it's important that the coach has a good stature, is respectable and is a great person," Davenport said.
Two other important differences exist in the Davenport psyche. One is her visible joy on court after returning from a nine-month hiatus caused by surgery for a serious knee injury. The other, as a result of that inactivity, is that she is now playing as the world's No 12, with no rankings points to defend. "It was a difficult time in my life," she said. "I was so excited to be back on court [last July] and lucky [because] my career could have been taken away from me.
"I have nothing to defend rankings-wise, at least until July, and can really only go up."
Players on the women's tour lose ranking points if they do not match their result from the previous year's event; without that to worry about, Davenport feels she can climb back into the top six, an ambition which Pratt, her vanquished opponent, said was modest.
"To me, I believe [she's] three or four behind Serena and Venus [Williams]," Pratt said. "Physically she's in great shape . . . and she had opportunities to take out that semi-final there [last year's US Open against Serena Williams]."
For Pratt, Australia's No 1-ranked player, the loss was a disappointment, but she could find some positives in it.
"I did have some opportunities there to get back to 4-4 in the first set," she said.
"I've been working a lot on my serve, trying to get some free points . . . and standing up in the court. The game I've been playing held me in the top 50, but I'm looking to achieve more than that and step it up."
Joining Pratt on the singles practice court will be Evie Dominikovic. The local wildcard served for the match in the second set against Russian Tatiana Panova, but couldn't control her nerves and lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. "I've got to use my brain a little bit more out there and take my time," she said.
Panova goes into a second-round meeting with Jennifer Capriati, while South African Amanda Coetzer was another to progress.
On the outside courts, 18-year-old Australian Ryan Henry was unlucky to lose his final-round qualifying match in three sets to 2001 quarter-finalist Hyung-Taik Lee.
:bounce: Congrats Lindsay and Good Luck for the next matches! :bounce:
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:31 PM
BUMP! :) :) :)
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:42 PM
thanks for that article Val - *sigh* I wish Ryan Henry had made it through qualifying then it would have been he and Todd representing Australia :)
oh well, I'll have to hunt down Todd tonight instead <g>
Jan 5th, 2003, 10:44 PM
nadine,i've visited ur own site (gossipcommunication) and i saw ur pics and pics of 2 lovely kids.r they ur kids?r u married?
Jan 5th, 2003, 11:11 PM
nope to both of those questions
They're my niece and nephew - I need to put some more pics of them because they've grown big time :)
ETA: I just added a truckload of articles - a lot are the same - basically a lot of articles have taken the AP news article and cut and pasted it galore.
Jan 6th, 2003, 07:18 AM
yup, the TOP forum nadine :D thanks :D
hey vale, could you please replace the link to your Tower of Power page to the link to the forum and NOT the 2002 thread? thanks :D
Jan 6th, 2003, 09:44 AM
Lindsay/Lisa lost double  at least now Lindsay can focuse herself on singles!
Jan 6th, 2003, 11:33 AM
yeah the match was interesting - Val - I think our worst fears might have been realised <g> Jon might be here :)
So see what I thought about the game I posted my comments in the other doubles thread.
Jan 7th, 2003, 06:03 AM
Jon is there?!
C'mon Lindsay, beat ur opponents and the bad Luck ur fiance brings! :p :D
Jan 7th, 2003, 07:28 AM
Oh No, Jon's not there is he? Lovely person but he doesn't seem to bring Lindsay too much luck. Shame about the doubles but yes she can concentrate on the singles. Capriati has gone out in the second round I hear to Panova, so that makes interesting reading don't you think?
GO GO GO LINDSAY:cool: :wavey:
Jan 7th, 2003, 07:29 AM
Jan,did u read my email about Lindsay's coach?i've sent it to you on sunday to update u about coaching situation!
Jan 7th, 2003, 07:35 AM
Yes I did read your email and thanks so much for updating me. I typed a reply but I couldn't send it, message kept telling me that the server wasn't available. So i was really annoyed. I appreciate your efforts Val. Yesterday I was so busy at work I did not have much time to get onto the internet and when I did I couldn't access WTAWorld so I wasn't too pleased.
Linds won anyway (singles). When does she play again. Pity about the doubles. What about Capriati then?
Cheers for now Jan
Jan 7th, 2003, 09:25 AM
Jan 7th, 2003, 10:23 AM
She's playing Lisa R tomorrow night 2nd up in the night session.
Jan 7th, 2003, 10:26 AM
pls nadine tell us everything about her...specially if u see Jon out there, and how is Rick,if he's calm or nervous..tell us everything!thanks!
Jan 7th, 2003, 10:30 AM
shall try to Val :)
Okay I'm positive Rick was there last night - I really need to find a pic of Lisa R's coach then I'll know who the other two who were sitting there were <g> one did kind of look like Jon though <g>
Jan 7th, 2003, 10:44 AM
u know Jon,right?
Jan 7th, 2003, 10:51 AM
Yeah I know Jon - I have to ask does Jon have a goatee at the moment? ;)
Because the guy I saw last night had a goatee and I was trying to picture Jon with a goatee <g> there was this really well built (tall) guy next to him - and then this blonde guy (who didn't leave at the end of the match - but looked like Rick).
It was all confusing <g>
Jan 7th, 2003, 12:30 PM
what's a goatee? :o my vocabulary doesnt have this word...
Jan 7th, 2003, 05:49 PM
You own evry1 in this draw!!! Lindsay Davenport- 2003 Wimbledon Champion!!!:hearts:
Jan 7th, 2003, 06:09 PM
Good Luck Tonight v Lisa, Lindsay!
Jan 7th, 2003, 06:34 PM
OMG!!!! At last I'm back from the hollidays!!!!!!
I miss Manila so much!!!!!! and my family.
Good to hear that Lindsay is in good form!!!!
Come on Lindsay, I'm ready to cheer for you again in 2003.
Lets go TOPS!!!!!!!!!
Jan 7th, 2003, 09:26 PM
goatee = like a beard but only half (kind of like a long moustache) <g>
Jan 7th, 2003, 09:49 PM
Lindsay in style over pratt ;)
yes, i know that was a little while ago, but i haven't posted in this thread for a while. it gets a little too crowded in here ;)
vamos lindsay - very well played and i know that your confidence is streaking up after a nice opening to 2003! im sure that you will take revenge on kim for all the evil she's done to you in the past ;) when you reach the semifinals :D
go lindsay :D (sorry lisa  )
sorry you guys lost in doubles by the way  - i was very upset to hear that
Jan 8th, 2003, 07:03 AM
I think Lindsay plays in about 30 mins time and I also think it is televised on Eurosport. I have set my video and reluctantly come to work. Oh do hope its on TV
GOOD LUCK LINDSAY AGAINST LISA - YOU CAN WIN THIS!
Jan 8th, 2003, 11:39 AM
go Lindsay!!! beat lisa, then hantuchova!!! and then u'll be on your way to steamroll to the final and take the titkle!
Jan 8th, 2003, 12:59 PM
crap I had this enormous post and my computer crashed....
okay bad news for me is I haven't gotten her autograph yet - I saw her train for 2 mins before the rain set in - she wasn't signing autographs then and Rick said she'd sign if they returned (which they didn't) :(
What was funny when she was practising was I rocked up there like a few other people and when I got there Lindsay and Rick just turned around and I was in one of those uh oh situations <vbg>
re: match against Lisa.
I was at the match against Lisa.
The first set was full of a lot of breaks in serves - players trying to get use to the conditions (plus they didn't get on court till almost 11pm because of the massive rain delay).
The second set was clinical Lindsay 6/1 - not as many u/e as usual, definitely more winners - granted I've seen Lisa play better than this but she was simply outclassed in the second set in particular.
The goatee guy was Lisa's coach David - he sat next to Rick and they chatted the whole match <g>
re: Rick's coaching style
he's pretty much like Robert in that he doesn't show any emotion when his player is on court - the only thing he does which I noticed was he has a notepad in which he writes comments most likely about technique, body language, racquets... (Lindsay had a major problem with the stringing of her racquets in this match especially in the first set).
What really impressed me in this match was when Lindsay was up 4-1 in the second set she didn't drop any of her intensity or fall into that pattern where she switches off - she kept up the same intensity to the very end and it impressed me a hell of a lot.
I'll be at the match tomorrow night when she plays Daniella H (if she can win that match she'll get extra quality points because of the rankings) and I'm hoping I can snag Lindsay's autograph tomorrow night before the match :)
Btw, Lindsay's seeded 9th for the Aust. Open - draw gets done on Friday.
I took photos but I'm not sure if they'll work because it was dark when I took the shots :)
ohhh and Val, Jon is not in Sydney (well he hasn't been at the matches) <g>
Jan 8th, 2003, 02:21 PM
c'mon Jon isnt there!so Lindsay can finally win some tourneys!hopefully he doesnt arrive for Aus Open...
thanks for ur great report,Nadine! :)
Jan 8th, 2003, 03:27 PM
:bounce:Lindsay-GooD LucK against Hantuchova!!!:bounce:
:bounce:hmmmmm...Lindsay looks so slim-like Hantuchova:)look at this pic above...:):bounce:
Jan 9th, 2003, 09:58 AM
LINDSAY B. HANTUCHOVA! ;) U must thank me cos Lindsay was losing 4-2 in third set and i was taping it in the same tape where I've recorded my poor France losing DC final against Russia  at 4-2 third set i said to myself "probably this tape jinks..France lost and Lindsay is losing too" so i stopped to record it and after that things went much better! :p
I promise I wont use that tape anymore!
GO LINDSAY,BEAT PANOVA TOMORROW AND GO INTO THE FINAL! :bounce:
Jan 9th, 2003, 10:01 AM
burn that tape val!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jan 9th, 2003, 10:07 AM
CONGRATS LINDSAY!!!GooD LucK against Panova!
Jan 9th, 2003, 10:27 AM
my other fav was Paradon S but he lost to Juan Carlos so I lost a $5 bet <g>
Jan 9th, 2003, 11:08 AM
Nadine, pls tell us something more about Lindsay's match!we watched it on tv but being there is very different! ;)
Jan 9th, 2003, 11:28 AM
what do you want to know?
It was the most nerve-wracking match I've watched in my life - beats the 2001 AI Final & the 2000 Olympics Gold Medal Men's Doubles final - and to top them it had to be remarkable.
Both players did not play well - Lindsay was definitely sluggish - Daniela stepped up her game and Lindsay couldn't counter-act it. The breaks were going everywhere, there were a lot of close calls and the crowd didn't want the match to end.
As much as a fan I am of Lindsay, I don't think the match deserved to end the way it did - yes it deserved to end with a tie-breaker, but double faulting always puts a damper on it.
Lindsay looked like she wasn't pleased with her performance and I don't blame her :) I think Rick will be doing some fine tuning before tomorrow.
Jan 9th, 2003, 11:36 AM
tv showed Rick,he was so serious and calm!
Jan 9th, 2003, 11:59 AM
I'm pretty impressed by him so far - he seemed really nice the other day when I saw him for like 2 mins when they were training <g>
I think he's very much like Robert when it comes to watching the matches - just sits back and watches it and doesn't show much emotion, chats for a while to people around him and carries his notepad (he was writing notes about Hantuchova I think - probably strengths / weaknesses) - he should add there - Lindsay's unforced errors ;)

at least lindsay didn't do what she did last year --> getting a lead and letting it slip by. she held on to it!

I think this is an extremely encouraging win for lindsay - last year she lost so many similar matches - now, with a new coach and a new fiance, she breaks the mould and will have had a great workout too! I really believe she could be serena's greatest challenger in melbourne...
I know its very difficult for Lindsay to beat Kim,but I'm confident!GO LINDSAY BABY,SHOW'EM U CAN DO IT! :D :D :D

WELL DONE LINDSAY!
I hope she will beat Kim - What a great start to the year it would be and such a great confidence boost too! To beat a player who is in such great form!

I'll put what I put in the other thread <g>
Lindsay's got a new nickname "The Owl" after two night matches including Thursday 's come-from-behind, energy-sapping, three-set win over Daniela Hantuchova - secured a spot in her sixth Sydney final with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Russian giant-killer Tatiana Panova.
And I got two autographs off her *woohoo* and watched her match and accidently saw her going into her post-match press conference (because I was getting a hot choc when she walked past me) :)
Let's hope the rain holds off for tomorrow.
I'm actually in two minds whether I want her to win tomorrow - the reason is runner up @ Adidas usually has better chance @ winning Australian Open - only a few people in the history of the AI tournament have backed their win up at the AO.
So as much as I would love to see Lindsay win tomorrow, I don't mind who wins
Believe in yourself and your abilities and you will do it. http://126.96.36.199/mysmilies/kao/cactus/kanpaib.gif

bad luck Lindsay - gradually it'll come together again - you were beaten by the better player on the day :)
She summed it up perfectly here:
"I never felt like I got into any kind of rhythm on my serve or on the ground strokes and I was never close enough to really ever get a sniff at the winner's trophy," she said.
At least it's looking better than it did this time last year <g>

I was hoping she'd finally win a title after reaching so many finals and came so close to winning those finals since her comeback ...
You can do it Lindsay
Jan 11th, 2003, 10:18 AM
I've come to the conclusion she likes to tease us Sydneysiders by getting to the final each year and keeping her record as runner up in tact :)
That being said noone will ever take away the honour she received by being the last champion at White City. It's Homebush Bay I'm telling you... runner up there 3 times, injured at the Olympics there <g> it's not a good place :)

I like your theory, gossipcom ;)
Lindsay confirmed that she is a classy gal with a nice speech - onya Lindsay :)
