Kiri's quarter.

Maria Kirilenko vs Mariana Duque-Marino
Silvia Soler Espinosa vs Heather Watson
Varvara Lepchenko vs Veronica Cepede Royg
Agnieszka Radwanska vs Julia Goerges

Great 2 rounds but then it gets tricky.

Doubles draw.

(1)Huber/Raymond v BYE
Radwanska/Radwanska v Cibulkova/Hantuchova
Goerges/Gronefeld v Baltacha/Keothavong
Gajdosova/Rodionova v (6)Makarova/Vesnina

(4)Hlavackova/Hradecka v Babos/Szavay
Li/Zhang v Dulko/Suarez
Chakravarthi/Mirza v Chuang/Hsieh
Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja v (7)Pennetta/Schiavone

(8)Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez v Dellacqua/Stosur
Peng/Zheng v Cornet/Mladenovic
Shvedova/Voskoboeva v Dubois/Wozniak
Jans-Ignacik/Rosolska v (3)Kirilenko/Petrova

(5)Kerber/Lisicki v Robson/Watson
Cirstea/Halep v Williams/Williams
Chakhnashvili/Tatishvili v Klepac/Srebotnik
Cetkovska/Safarova v (2)Errani/Vinci

Sadly with either the WS or Errani-Vinci in the semis I don't see much of a chance for a medal.

GOOD LUCK! Davai Russia.

Vikkiri.

Lets do this Kiri !
With Nadia, they have a pretty good draw for the semi.

In singles, she potentially has another shot at AgRad in 3R. I'm actually happy to see this because I feel she deserved a better Wimbledon. And remember what happened when she drew Stosur twice right after losing that thrilling US Open match?

As for doubles, she still has a great chance to medal. The semis will be tough, but (1) they can still beat the sisters & the Italians, and (2) you can still get bronze when losing in the semis. I was annoyed to see they drew the Kazakhs in R2, probably the toughest unseeded team after the Williams. Bad luck again after Wimbledon. But at least they're in a different quarter from the Williams sisters.

that's exactly what I think too :)

I like her draw, could have been much worse!
She should or could reach R3 to get that great opportunity to take revenge on aga. I would love to see that rematch, this it's gonna be interesting. :) yeah, just remember how motivated she was to beat stosur after that close loss at the us open last year, kiri was totally on fire :fiery: ;)
..but let's see how things are going, aga has a tough 1st round, and kiri probably has to beat local player heather watson first

and in the doubles, the chances to get bronze are given! if they should get in the small final, they won't have to play neither the williams' nor errani/vinci there! :D

so let's keep fingers crossed, DAVAI maria!!! :cheer:

Only singles match not on TV today, and doubles is on 16, not shown either :( Hopes she makes doubles semis as those will surely be on a show court.

Kiri's two matches against Kvitova have been her two worst of the past year, but I don't think she was anything near her best either day. Kiri's playing much better now, and Kvitova hasn't been as hot.

Kiri in singles on Court 2 (following men's doubles starting at 11:30).
Kiri in doubles on Court 14 (following men's doubles starting at 14:00).

The advantage of the play suspension is the doubles is back on a TV court... for now :)

Hope she'll have suitable rest, but knowing her scheduling luck lately, the Court 2 men's doubles match will last 5 hours and the Court 14 one will last an hour. :p

I am pleasantly surpised how well Maria is playing on grass courts this year. She has the all court game and mobility to be a fine grass court player. Great win for Makiri today against the powerful Julia Goerges. Julia has been serving huge during the Olympics and player very powerfully so Maria beating her today in straight sets is nimpressive to me. Now on to Petra Kvitova. Petra has lit up Maria the past 2 times they have played. :scared: I am hoping Kiri plays well and Kvitova plays poorly.

The Olympics are 17 days long so why are they playing such an important tournament in less time than Indian Wells? What's the big deal? Kiri needs a damn day off. Damn London weather too. :fiery: She and Petrova need to win that doubles match in straight sets andn they are in position to do so.

oh yeahhhhhh, I am so happy for kiri! :cheer:

great win against jule, I thought she would lose that first set after wasting the matchpoint on her serve at 5-3, 40-30..but hey, she didn't :worship:

now let's see what's possible against petra..
the H2H is 2-2, but kvitty won the last two meetings..
2009, kiri beat her right in wimbledon, in R1 by 6-4, 6-4, let's do this again ;)
2009 in toronto another win for maria, 6-1, 6-0!!

last year in the fed cup final then, there was no chance for kiri...kvitova was in her best shape ever and beat her 6-2, 6-2..
in this years AO, they met in R3, and kiri had to retire at 6-0,1-0..

so, take your chances maria, you can do it!! davai :cheer:

and it also looks good in doubles, maria/nadia are leading 7-5, *3-3! I hope they can win this in straights to reach the medal round, would be so amazing! come on girls :cheer:

Hooray Kiri!!! She just played so clean -- 10 winners to 1 unforced error. I never doubted her once on serve. I don't this match was as close as it looked. She had all the momentum going into the tiebreak. The only time I felt a little doubt was on the match points, and wow, I hope the winning point gets on a highlight video soon. :)

Petra wasn't at her best, but it wasn't like she was horrible either. Maria's game was so clean and she was serving so well. This is the kind of result I always knew she had in her. :) :) :)

I am shocked Kiri beat Kvitova in straight sets after Petra crushed Kiri the last 2 times they played. This is amazing for Maria and I hope she plays Big Maria in the semi's. And I hope Serena loses to Azarenka in the other semifinal. ;)

On a side note I don't want to hear how badly Petra played when she lost only 3 games yesterday against Pennetta. How do you go from mint form to terrible form in 1 day? Makiri gets the credit for Kvitova's poor play today.

Of course every time Kiri advances it's because she has a weak draw, or her opponents play poorly :p

Kvitova played some error-filled matches her first two rounds, and then Pennetta was helpless against her. I believed that if Kiri played clean and put some pressure on, then she had a good chance to pull this out in three sets. Kvitova played well enough not to get broken until her last service game, but Maria did well to keep Kvitova off her game, and she was the better player all the way through. Kvitova's far from her peak, but compared to her slam losses in the past year, this was not a particularly bad performance.

Yes!!! Maria & Nadia come back from down a break in the third set to advance to the semis!! 2 of 3 on break points in third set, much more efficient than set 2 which they let slip away.

On to the Williams sisters! Maria & Nadia should've beaten them in Wimbledon, but they let it get away. The sisters have improved much since then though. This will be the match of doubles tournament tomorrow.

I hope she can have at least one medal now, bronze in doubles seems most likely as Williams brother can't be defeated by normal women, maybe she could upset Sharapova...

it's just amazing, I thought she could reach the semis in doubles, but hey, in singles?! that's unblievable, what a tournament! :worship:

she would deserve a medal so much now, and I also think she has good chances for it in the doubles, I guess they will play Hlavackova/Hradecka for the bronze..

in singles it's gonna be more difficult, but who knows? this kiri is a tough opponent for everyone :D

I was wondering what they'd do for scheduling. I guess they want both Serena & Kiri to start singles play at the same time.

This means the Maria vs. Maria semi will barely get TV time in the U.S. Bravo is completely unprepared to say anything about her other than that she should be losing. ;)

If it rains tomorrow, they sure had better move this match to CC and postpone the doubles.

only thing is, Fed and Del potro could go 3 hours and doubles on court one shouldn't go too long... Maria Vs. Maria could start before Serena and I'm sure Bravo will show look ins..

Thankfully, their will be a stream.. I'll probably watch that match over Serena/Az cause both Maria's are my faves :) Kiri new fave and would like to see her get the upset... at least a medal.

what a day, and the dream continues! semfinal-day tomorrow!!

kiri plays her singles on court 1:

Court 1 Start: 12:00

Women's Doubles - Semifinals

HUBER / RAYMOND (USA) [1] V HLAVACKOVA / HRADECKA (CZE) [4]

Women's Singles - Semifinals

Maria SHARAPOVA (RUS) [3] V Maria KIRILENKO (RUS) [14]

I think that's gonna be a close match, big masha leads 3-2 in the H2H series, but kiri was about to beat her in indian wells this year, we all now how it ended :/

kiri will have a chance, if she keeps serving like she did against kvitty

the doubles match is scheduled for the CC, last match there!

Centre Court Start: 12:00

Men's Singles - Semifinals

Roger FEDERER (SUI) [1] V Juan Martin del POTRO (ARG) [8]

Women's Singles - Semifinals

Victoria AZARENKA (BLR) [1] V Serena WILLIAMS (USA) [4]

Men's Singles - Semifinals

Andy MURRAY (GBR) [3] V Novak DJOKOVIC (SRB) [2]

Women's Doubles - Semifinals

KIRILENKO / PETROVA (RUS) [3] V WILLIAMS / WILLIAMS (USA)

well, the williams sisters seem unbeatable at the moment, now they are even better then one month ago as they won the GS at wimby
I don't see a real chance for maria/nadia, unless a miracle happens..

Williams sisters are playing great, but if anyone can beat them this tournament, it's Maria & Nadia. :)

Venus can still have bad days, particularly on serve. They had struggles on serve in Wimbledon against the best teams they faced, Maria & Nadia and Raymond/Huber. They've been good so far in doubles this tournament, but Venus struggled on serve against Kerber in singles. I am hopeful that Maria & Nadia can once again prevent Venus from feeling comfortable.

The Williams sisters have been coming together better as a team since Wimbledon, but Maria & Nadia are better too. Maria was particularly bad down the stretch of the match at Wimbledon, and I know she will do better now.

I'm sure Maria & Nadia have been impatient for this Wimbledon rematch and they'll have confidence they can finish the job this time.

Maria Kirilenko has been grinding away on the WTA Tour for 10 years and I have waited for her to play fine all court tennis like this the past 10 years and she is finally doing it at a high level Kiri was very good in making the Wimbledon quarters and now she has made the Olympic semifinals today by upseting Petra Kvitova in the biggest match of Kiri's career. But WTF is going on in the media? I can't find any articles, video or photos of Makiri's great win today anywhere on the internet and not even at the WTA Tour site. This is crazy. Now Kiri and Sharapova are playing their Olympic semifinal match on court 1 tomorrow. Again WTF is happening? This is ludicrous.

It doesn't make sense, too true. I use to think swimming was something one did to avoid drowning, but apparently it's an Olympic Sport, and I'm suppose to find it entertaining to watch some people I don't know swimming back and forth across a small pool! Unless there are sharks in the water I really can't see why I'm suppose to find it entertaining. More tennis less drivel please.

I know. The lack of tennis coverage in comparison to Slams or even Premiers is frustrating, but I'm not surprised with the packed schedule of the Olympics.

It was decided in advance this was the least important men's or women's singles QF of the day, and no one's going to alter coverage to reflect that mistake.

All I can find is a couple Reuters photos here (http://news.yahoo.com/photos/russias-kirilenko-returns-czech-republics-kvitova-womens-singles-photo-140557148.html) and here (http://news.yahoo.com/photos/russias-kirilenko-celebrates-point-against-russias-kirilenko-during-photo-140329241.html).

This is the only good tweet (https://de.twitter.com/TennisReporters/status/231040567751098370) I could find:
Wow what a great win by Kirilenko over Kvitova. So underrated & such a good all court player. Think she'll reach career high ranking
Also note that she gets to #13 with Silver and #11 with Gold.

Yes, to find coverage of Kiri you really need to be searching for Кириленко ;)

Here's a translated article: http://www.sports.ru/tennis/142401019.html

All the attention in the early days of the Olympics battered Maria Sharapova, but today was definitely the heroine of the day, Maria Kirilenko. Wards in London, her fiance, Alexander Ovechkin, beaming its not a Hollywood smile for photographs with tennis players, Kirilenko, so to speak, caught a wave.

The match with Petra Kvitova presaged no good - the ex-champion of the "Wimbledon" is good for grass surfaces, and to cope with its powerful game of miniature Masha seemed to be almost impossible. But Kirilenko is not easy to cope with the thunderous attack rivals, but also cleverly used her power against itself Petra.

One of the keys to victory was the inerrancy of Masha - for the entire match she had made only one (!) Unforced error, and some balls hit in the courts after it strikes a miracle. Can not say that Peter sorila errors - on account of its 21 with 23 unforced actively won balls (10 WINNERS from Kirilenko), and to the penultimate match of the girls game are not lost a game are in their feeds. Moreover, the filing Kirilenko at Petra, there was no break-Point, and his winning break Masha was able to issue only in the eighth game of the second set. The girls exchanged with incredible force of the blows and confidently acted on its filing - a match in this respect little on the masculine.

Cherry on the cake in this battle was the match points - two beats Kirilenko actually tore down, falling on the racquet rim, but the ball like a magnet attracted to the lines, Kvitova decided on a desperate shortened that Kirilenko caught up with his last strength, but sent the ball briefly along the grid so Kvitova that there was no chance for salvation.

Beating the Petra Kvitova Masha became a real life game. She was always in the shadow of his star friends, but the time has come for its moment of glory. Who knows, maybe this would motivate the victory of Russian woman to take even greater heights, especially since she already has experience of victories over the best of the best, including over its rival in the semi-finals.

And this article contains some quotes from Maria & Nadia's postmatch presser today :)

Maria Sharapova (3) [RUS] vs. Maria Kirilenko (15) [RUS] (Second match, Court 1): To quote the Dandy Warhols, “A long time ago we used to be friends, but I haven’t thought of you lately at all.” Pretty appropriate for these two Russian, blonde, shrieky Marias, who used to be a bit closer than they are these days. Kirilenko is the surprise semifinalist here after pulling off a straight-set upset over 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. But what looks like an out-of-the-blue result actually isn’t. Kirilenko came within a couple of games of advancing to the Wimbledon semifinals this year, eventually losing to Agnieszka Radwanska, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. A solid doubles player, Kirilenko has the ability to finish points at the net if she wants to and sometimes it’s just a matter of her realizing that she has to. Kirilenko has the skills and the grit to beat Sharapova, and their last two matches have been three set grinds, with Kirilenko pulling off the upset at the Australian Open in 2010, and Sharapova coming out on top earlier this year at Indian Wells with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory that took over three hours. If Kirilenko comes out knowing she can’t compete stroke-for-stroke with Sharapova from the baseline and tries to throw in more variety and get to the net, we could get an interesting one here. But if her feet stay rooted on the baseline I give the nod to the taller, flag-bearing Maria. Have you seen her this week? She looks like a woman possessed by the quest for gold.

http://blogs.tennis.com/tennisworld/2012/08/around-the-olympics-day-6.html
Maria Kirilenko of Russia is a player who, despite her obvious good looks, can get lost in the woodwork of the pro game despite being a consistent high-achiever. At 5-foot-9, she's not too big, not too small. She has decent power, but lacks menacing weapons. She's a typical baseliner, yet is proficient enough at the net, with sufficiently soft hands, to be an excellent doubles player. She's been in around around the Top 20 for a long time, and has won five singles titles, but more than twice as many in doubles. It's small wonder that she gets lost in the shuffle despite having much to recommend her. Kirilenko presently is just one notch below her career-high singles ranking (14), and coming off her best Grand Slam result yet, a tough three-set quarterfinal loss at Wimbledon to losing finalist Agnieszka Radwanska. Given that she's such a textbook case of the good but not great player, someone who's more than journey woman but far from being a champion, nobody really anticipated that she would take down No. 6 seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. But Kirilenko managed it, winning 7-6 (3), 6-3. And she's also punched her ticket into the medal round of the doubles.

The last piece came from the same loser whose Olympic preview included the following:
One thing that struck me is that as powerful as the German women are, the Russians are in surprisingly poor shape—with the outstanding exception of Sharapova. I find it hard to come up with three less inspiring contenders than the rest of the Russia's four-woman (maximum) contingent—Zvonareva (see above), Maria Kirilenko, and Nadia Petrova. It's a pity that Svetlana Kuznetsova, a multiple Grand Slam champ, and Pavlyuchenkova, a lavishly gifted but apparently confused 21-year-old, have performed so dismally this year. It will be interesting to see how the Russians—men and women—fare as a team. :p

:pThanks for the tidbits of info on Makiri at the Olympics. But I am astonished the WTA Tour and the media in general isn't even covering any of her matches. Indian Wells gets better coverage than Olympic tennis and this is supposed to be the Olympics that mattered in tennis.

Yeah, the lack of coverage for Kiri sucks, but I'd blame the Olympic bureaucracy rather than the individual media outlets or tennis governing bodies for the problem. The Olympics don't make it easy to get accreditation.

The Olympics unfortunately will grant credentials to clueless journalists from traditional newspapers with large circulations who dabble in several sports they know nothing about, instead of a larger number of niche journalists who cover one sport and are actually knowledgeable about what they write about.

In fact, you're probably better off not having these journalists write about your sport at all, because often they hate their assignments and just ridicule whatever they're covering and argue that it shouldn't be in the Olympics at all. That certainly happened with softball as it was being cut.

But I digress.... good luck tomorrow Kiri!!!

As far as Makiri's tennis Olympic tennis goes she had emotional wins in singles and doubles yesterday and I hope she has enough energy and emotion left today for another huge day of tennis. I don't undertstand why the players can't have a damn day off though. No doubt the emotional Olympic tennis day after day takes more out of the slighter Makiri than it does the Amazonish Serena, Viktoria and Big Maria. Big Masha has been able to wear down Little Masha twice in their careers in Miami in 2006 and Indian Wells in 2012. I sure hope that doesn't happen again today. Kiri will need to play another clean and efficient match to be able to pull off another major upset.

Littlle Maria and Big Maria first played each other more than 10 years ago in the girls Wimbledon semifinals. Big Masha won in 3 sets. She has always been the greater player since then due to her size, power, toughness and determination. It certainly has nothing to due with skill, agility, mobility and athleticism because Little Masha has that all over Big Masha. I will be very interested to see if Makiri's new belief system will propel her to victory today against a much bigger and stronger player who is the clear favorite. This is without question the biggest match of Makiri's career while it's just another big match for Sharapova.

I feared Kiri would be tired and a little slower than normal today after her huge and emotional win over Kvitova yesterday and it seemed she was tired and slower than usual. Big Masha was just too big and strong and Kiri needs to be fresh when she plays her to have any real chance to win. Little Masha really could have used a day off. Well done to Sharapova on taking care of business.

I don't understand how the ITF allows the Olympic tennis tournament to be run worse than a Tier1 or Masters tournament. It's assinine there are no days off. It's too much emotional tennis for Kiri and her fragile body to play in singles and doubles in so few days.

Now Makiri has the rest advantage over Serena going into the doubles semifinal against the Williams sisters. Serena has yet to start her match. I hope Kiri can refocus and play the match of her life in doubles today. After this tough loss she will need alot of help from Petrova and I hope Nadia gives it to her. Serena must be pissed off her singles seminfinal against Azarenka hasn't started yet. :fiery: I guess I hope Serena wins so Kiri has a chance in the bronze medal match. She would have a batter chance against Vika than Serena. But still as tired as she is winning her bronze medal match would surprise me. But Makiri has done Russia proud in the London Olympics and there is still more for her to try to do. :D

kiri was up a break in the 2nd, and then she lost her service in a tight game...also the remaining games of that 2nd set were all very close, it was just that big masha scored the big points :(

Someone from the ITF needs to get punched in the mouth for cramming all this tennis into 1 week of play. It is stupid and why would the players ever accept this? And to be honest it's assinine there is even mixed double play in the Olympics now.

I kind of hope Kiri's huge doubles match now scheduled for court 2 last I heard gets pushed off until tommorow. But I guess there is still an hour or so of light to play today in London. Yup, and that doubles match will probably be late, given that both the bronze & gold need to be finished. Then it'll be a quick turnaround for some well-rested teams in the final on Sunday. :(

Is the scheduling the ITF's fault? They can't control the date of the Olympics. Then you have these US Open Series tournaments, Toronto & Cincinatti & then New Haven (or whatever) that need to be squeezed in for the three weeks between the first week of the Olympics and the US Open. So they're kind of stuck accommodating these WTA/ATP events. But yes, I'd rather the Olympics went longer. It's not like anyone good going deep in London is showing for Toronto anyway.

Poor Kiri:hug: The schedule of the Olympics is terrible. Her next doubles match hope to be fine, she can win it :kiss:I am beyond frustrated with the Olympic schedule. :fiery: The awful ITF let's Olympic tennis get treated like a bush league sport. I thought Vika would routine Kiri today because Kiri is shot and she did. Kiri has nothing left. What the hell, Maria managed on consecutive days to beat Amazon's the Gorgeous One Julia with the huge serve, Petra Kvitova with her huge game and then she got pounded by Big Maria and all her power. All the while Makiri was playing doubles matches after her singles matches to help tire her out. The poor girl is worn down and has nothing left in my opinion. I would be shocked if Kiri and Nadia beat the Williams sisters. Serena will be fired up after her gold medal singles win and she will want to win doubles gold for her sister Venus. I doubt the Russian dua would be able to beat Raymond and Huber for the bronze for that matter as Kiri will be tired and frustrated how much tennis she has had to play in a few days. This might look lik it's ending up on a bad note for Maria but she did make the semi's in singles and doubles which is a rare feat in Olympic tennis. :worship: My main concern now is not whether Kiri medals in doubles but that she rests for a week or 2 after her tournament is done so she can come back fired up to play a shortened hardcourt season. Makiri has taken her game to a new level and it's time she expects herself to play like she's a top 10 player whether she's in the top 10 or not. But her lack of size against the big girls will always be an issue. I wish Kiri played 15 or 20 years ago. She would have had a muchn easier time winning back then.

P.S. - I am also frustrated I have seen nothing of Kiri's fine play on TV this Olympics. I can't find her doubles semifinal with the Williams sisters anywhere. Again tennis gets treated like crap by the networks. But I sure can find alot of Olympic sports I care nothing about.

I hope Maria can put her 2 singles losses behind her for this huge doubles match. And I hope Masha and Nadia can somehow pick on Venus and make her the weak link today.

What a devastating 24 hours for Makiri's Olynpic tennis!  I hope she can gather herself for the bronze medal match against Raymond and Huber and get on the podium with Nadia. Kiri and Petrova were competitive with the mighty Williams sisters but I never had the feeling they could take the match over. I think serving second in both sets hurt too.

Disappointing, yes, and Kiri hasn't kept up the high level she had earlier this week, but at the same time it was a tall order to win either of the last two days. She's had her moments in all of these matches, which is a lot more than Vika or the other Maria can say from their Serena singles experience (I bet MaKiri would've shown much more fight in singles against Serena than either of those two, too bad we won't find out). I firmly believe she & Nadia should take the bronze tomorrow.

NYKirifan, you do know Maria and Nadia have trouble closing big matches and that they are playing the #1 seeds Raymond and Huber for a bronze medal don't you? To me this is at best a 50 / 50 match for Kiri and Petrova. So much pressure will be on Kiri in this match. To make the semi's in singles and doubles is a great accomplishment. But I am sure Maria desperately wants a bronze medal and that may play against Maria. One thing is for sure Kiri has the most talent of the 4 players playing for a doubles bronze medal and she needs to play like she's the best player on the court for her team to take the bronze.

I preferred it when Olympic tennis did not make players play for singles and doubles bronze medals. What are they going to make mixed doubles players play a bronze medal match? Ridiculous. They used to have 2 bronze medalists for singles and doubles and the tennis worl and Olympic tennis survived just fine. There is no reason Makiri or any other player should have to play extra matches after losing in singles and doubles. The ITF caved in on that rule and it is not good for the players such as Kiri in this case to have to play 2 extra matches when she is already exhausted and worn down and vulnerable to injury.

NYKiriFan
Aug 5th, 2012, 01:13 AM
Sure, but there's pressure on Raymond/Huber too, since Huber bowed out in 1st round of mixed & Raymond is in two bronze medal matches this Olympics like Kiri, and they're the ones ranked No. 1.

Anyway, I don't have a lot of respect for the opposing pairing because I attended Kiri & Vika plowing through them at Stanford a year ago. I know there are many reasons why Kiri might not also dominate them again tomorrow with Nadia, and I'm putting too much stock into one match I happened to attend and ignoring losses to them that I did not attend, but I don't really care. Best of luck to Kiri tomorrow.

Actually, I have a good feeling as well! Hlavackova/Hradecka beat them 6-1, 7-6, so why kiri/nadia shouldn't be able to do so as well? And after three losses in a row there must follow a win ;P

Wow the prospect of Kiri making the semi's in Olympic singles and doubles only to lose 4 straight matches blows me away. If that happens I hope it doesn't ruin her confidence. That said I did not expect Kiri and Petrova to win this bronze medal match. They are a new team while Huber and Raymond are grizzed vets at playing together. And quite franky I also didn't expect Kiri and Nadia to win this big match because they struggle in big matches.

I'm very happy and relieved for Maria and Nadia to win the bronze medal. :) They deserve it. Kiri was truly the unsung hero of Olympic tennis making the semi's in both singles and doubles. I thought not medalling at all in either event might crush her this summer and fall. Thank God that didn't happen. But I also feel that winning a bronze medal and doing so well in the Olympics even with an insane overworked schedule should propel Kiri forward the rest of the year making her realize she is capable of doing good things in tennis more often than she has her first 10 years on tour. It's time for Makiri to make a serious run at the top 10 and making a grand slam semifinal or 2 in her career.

On a side note I love the Makiri Olympic post match point celebration where she falls on her back on the grass court and stomps her feet and screams like a little kid. :yeah: :scream:

Glad we don't have to find out whether that would be the case ;)

Lots of positives for her to take from this week, even in the two singles losses. Regardless of what the ranking points say, this the biggest event apart from the Slams, and she has every reason to believe she can make some Slam semis in singles and win Slam titles in doubles going forward.

And that's why I thought it would crush Kiri if she didn't win any medals after making the semi's in singles and doubles. Thankfully Maria and Nadia came up big today.

Great olympics for her! I'm really happy :).

For me, she is now both game wise and ranking wise at a point where she should really try to maximize her results in singles. So I would like to see her skipping doubles in slams from next year on. Thats the only (minor) thing, for me it seemed she didn't play as well as she could in her semifinal. I'd like to blame it on fatigue due to playing both singles and doubles the day before.

Probably there was some truth to that, but the fatigue would be a larger factor for the Olympics or a Premier tournament than a Slam. But you may be right that she'll move in that direction, with an Olympic medal no longer an immediate goal.
