Hope she wins today. She'll need to be playing well fo sure because Martinez is lefty, plays a lot of serve and volley(which could be good for this surface).
And yes she hasn't won a lot lately but she had two great matches on grass in london.
I relly want to see her against Serena.

All service games in set 2 very good(even when she faced bp she was 40:0 up). In others it was in average a point per game for MJMS. And then she loses 2 in a row to go from 5*-4 to 5-7. An hour of play in 2nd set alone.
3.11 AM. Need to sleep.

Well, on the positive side, she has earned about $150k in prize money already in 2012. She's doing pretty good as a tennis player this year. :) I think if you accept her ranking reflects her ability (~100) then her results don't seem that bad. She isn't a top 10, or even a top 50, player (and hasn't been for about 12 years). She's going to have good results and some terrible results like others with similar ability.

Her ranking reflects her results, but I don't accept her ranking reflects her ability. She destroyed Bartoli at Wimbledon with 33 winners and 11 unforced errors. That isn't the game of a player with the ability only to be ranked between 95-110. There are no other players in her ranking bracket who could take a top tenner - healthy and on their favourite surface - apart like she did that day. I doubt if any of them could hit 33 winners in a long 3 set match, let alone 19 games. So if she found that game again she would have no trouble cracking the top 50. That's ability. The players in her ranking range such as Parmentier, Hampton, Cohen, Torro-Flor, Tsurenko and Bratchikova do not have the ability to play as well as that.

It's almost like she showed the world she could still play at Wimbledon then pulled out of the next few tournaments and has gone back to being the same player she was before. The player who could lose to Melanie South and it's very frustrating.

It was windy yesterday, but still. Clearly when Mirjana is focused there's nothing MJMS can do on return. But she's not focused. She maybe even goes for to much in Slams.
In AOpen lost to Larriere. She was down 61 and then in set2 broke with great game for *4-4.
She lost due to DF's in next game(61 64).
In Paris she lost first set to Sveta easily, was down 30 or something in second. At 3-4 she missed open cuort for 4-4. Next game she stopped trying and lost 6-1 6-3..
In Wimbledon she should have defeated Vinci, was more concincing on her serve in first set but lost it in crappy TB. In second she first missed 3 BP's for 6-5 and then again playing bad in TB after having no problems at all on her serve during the set.

SHe had chance, in every Grand SLam this year to make at least one more round.
But the momment she lost that crucial point she lost herself, don't ask me why.

Why didn't she held at 3-6 5-6 yesterday? I believe she was way to negative, but with no reason since she was one game away from tb and with great serving behind her in the hole set. She got up 30-15. She never won another point in the match.

Now Quebec, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijjing, Osaka.

I was at the match. First, it was disapointing she had to play on court 10. The court 7 matches were all very long, and there was good atmosphere on that court. It has a large grandstand on one side, maybe fits 500-1000 people. No one knew she was playing on Court 10. There were maybe 50 people watching. She started off great, having a break point to lead 4-0, but still in command at 3-1. Then, her first serve dropped and she was inconsistent off the ground. She lost five games fast to make it 3-6. I had to leave at the end of the first set to catch a train back to D.C. It sounds like she played well until serving for the set at 5-4.

I saw the match and Miki played extremely well, but Bartoli wasn't 100%. Miki can hit the ball hard, but the point construction, the variety, the ability to execute a plan B is what's lacking. I think that's why she has good results on grass, because if you can give the ball a good whack it isn't going to come back.

Players ranked 50-100 have good wins every so often. What they have in common is they are unable to string wins together with any sort of regularity. While Miki's game is different than some others, IMO her ranking does reflect her overall tennis ability. (It's hard to argue otherwise given how long she's been playing and looking at her career best rank).

ajmo!
Aug 31st, 2012, 12:06 AM
A lot of players in 2nd and 3rd round that Miki could beat easily. But who knows if she would.
Since Wimbledon nothing good has happened. And it seems to be to problem with game because she's serving better. She'll drop a lot in rankings and who knows if she'll be motivated to train hard for another year.
She's at this level for 2 years now. And she had some good tournaments and great wins(against Bartoli 64 63, Dokic 62 62, Giorgi 61 61 etc.) but we all do not expect her to be top 35 again.
She still could get some big win or some tournament title or GS 2nd week, but I'm not sure she'll be around for few more years just for that. Because she was supossed to be GS champion. Players as Li Na and Schiaovone are, she was able to beat them 60 60 15 years ago. She has a huge loving family and it wouldn't be surprising if she would decide to spend more time with them.
For me she's just as big champion as Serena is. I hope she does not just go away without a goodbye.
Even more I hope she'll stick around until Rio 2016, but I doubt.

I think it's harder as these players get older because the travel must be grueling. On top of that, to make all these travel arrangements to go to a tournament and lose in R1 must be disheartening. I really admire her tenacity because, despite these challenges, she continues on. I'd love to know what motivates her now, because we know when she was younger it was the potential for grand slam titles.

In Quebec field isn't that strong, but she could play somebody like Cibulkova in open round. With good draw I would expect/hope for some QF.
If she does good, no Seoul Q-draw which is just fine since field is strong.
In Tokyo and Beijjing she'll play Q and I hope to make MD and win MD match at least in one. And Osaka surface should suit her so I hope also for some nice result.
Also, there are some challengers in Asia at the end of the year so she could enter.
If she could catch 200 points untill the end of season I would be happy and that would put her in top 90.

Mirjana plays a Q in R1. The winner then plays Flipkens or--you guessed it--Cibulkova (#1 seed).

Let's hope Mirjana wins at least her first match. It would give her 30 points and almost $3K.

Possibly true, Lucic leads head to head 2-1, but there's been a couple of tough 3 setters in there. Main concern for me is that El Tabakh has had three matches and is ready to go, we all know Miki can take her time to find a groove but I'm sure she can do it. I would have preferred Davis on this fast surface despite the losing head to head.

Exactly true.
Flipkens just knew what she had to do, keep the ball in play with her backhand slice and deep forehands.
Mirjana was so close to win that game at 44 but once again that tactic was enough to get broken.
Shame for who knows how many times in her career.
At least she won one match.
Good luck in next tournament!

Lady Fortuna, come on this is to much. Last year BSZ, this year Flipkens.
And game point at 4-4, bp at 4-5. so frustrating
Last year BSZ won tournament droping only two sets, one to Mirjana and other to Erakovic(4-6). She beat Erakovic by losing only one more game until the end of the match. Mirjana had break in third set, BSZ killed her with forehand and backhand slices.
This year again Flipkens gets by Miki so hard, beats Anna easily(didn't seem injured) and now beat Barthel 2-0.
Mirjana never passed more than a round on WTA tournament since a year ago. Two titles were out there for her and she got nothing. She know it and it must be extremly frustrating.

I still think it would have been hard for her to advance much farther. She hasn't had to beat quality opponents four days in a row in several years, so that would be a tall order. The crafty players like Barb and Kristen are always going to be tough for her because she cannot hit through them for two sets without making a lot of errors. So it will be hard for her to win titles without being able to beat these type of players who litter the draw in the early rounds.

Galina has been in Asia for a few weeks, so she was probably more acclimated to the conditions. From the stats, it appears Mirjana returned well but her serve stats weren't good. There were alot of breaks of serve. As for ITFs, the last few years as we all know she skiped the Asian swing and got some significant points in the U.S. ITFs. Most players in her ranking range do play the Asian swing but it's a risk that you may lose in the first round against good, tough competion and not come away with much points wise. Hopefully, she'll acclimate in the next tournament and get some points. Going there is a risk and involves alot of travel $$

I mean there are many big hitters in the game right now, but there's something specific that makes her game so great when she's on. I just hope some miracle is around the corner.
I want everybody to know her story, how sensational she is.

And yes, I'm Mirjana fun but if I was some big TV guy I would totally give her a cooking show. I mean, she travels all over the world and she could have great show. I mean one week she's cooking in Rome, next in Paris. WTA should do something like that.

yeah, that would have been an excellent backup plan. She could have played Taipei, then the WTA tournament the next week. I hope she still plays the WTA tournament she is entered into next week. Her planning to maximize points is not the best. With her ranking she really should be entering a mix of tour events and ITFs. I know the ITFs aren't glamourous but she needs the points. Maybe she is thinking that she is nearing the end of her career and wants to enjoy as many tour-level events as she can get into. Considering that she was married recently, I imagine she would want to spend more time with her husband now rather than travel all over the world.

And second and third were on Mirjana's side and could have been ever easier. I mean, she got broken in third and still was winning 75% of points on serve, over 80% after first. Also, 4 wasted break points in that set So, it wasn't as close as it seems.

Mirjana needs to have the attitude that she's physically and mentally fresh after playing so few matches the past few weeks and that is a great opportunity to advance deep into the draw and get some valuable points. I think from her results it is pretty clear indoor hard is a better surface for her than outdoor hard. In retrospect, playing some European $75,000 or even $50,000 K indoor events in Europe would have been a good idea. I believe the $50,000 K in Toronto you're referring to is also played on indoor hard. The 50 K in the states she is playing is in Arizona and is on outdoor hard. I think it was bad scheduling to only play one indoor hard event the entire fall.

Wow! There is a rumor going round that Mirjana wants the same thing.

[ugh] I cannot believe I am here.

Mirjana is mentally stuck at 105-120 in terms of her comeback, and year-end rankings do not lie.

On the one hand, it is always wonderful to see her winning tour-level matches, as she did in Quebec and Osaka.

On the other hand, she was beating Heidi AllTobacco and Sweet Sweet Pretty Pretty Khum-Khum.

Her game is stuck, which is no crime.

Anyone who has followed Mirjana has been waiting for her to "break out" and do some damage, but the best she could do were a couple of minor WTA quarterfinals and a truly inspired run through 2012 Wimby, including an upset of a Top 10 favorite.

Otherwise, Mirjana just isn't making real breakthroughs.

She does have a FINE opportunity on her stick now, however: Nice performances in Texas and Phoenix at the Challenger level will allow her to finish a season in the Top 100 for the first time since her comeback.

Best of luck to her in these hardscrabble USTA events. G-d Bless.

I just feel like with some better planning to her season she could be ranked in the top 100, maybe even top 80. She doesn't play a lot of high level ITFs with weak fields like the ones in Asia this time of year. Since she isn't going to be seeded at WTA tour events, she is always going to play someone good by R2. While she plays like a top 20 player on grass, she usually has problems with higher ranked players on other surfaces. The ITFs can help because she might be seeded at some and can really build her confidence against weaker opponents.

Mikireturns you just couldn't stay away. That's a good thing. Welcome back.

Thanks.

As far as Mirjana's scheduling goes, it has often appeared off-balance ... From our perspective as knowledgeable tennis fans.

But I have to think she has plotted her schedule out because she believes she can be winning matches at the WTA level and not resorting to Challengers.

To her credit, there are a number of WTA-level matches this year that she coulda/shoulda won (Larcher de Brito and Flipkens come to mind). She'd be finishing in the Top 100 already, but for those missteps.

So, she can do it. She is a WTA-level player who can reasonably win one round at most WTA events, but not two ... Yet.

At first, I thought she was going to retire this year, and that was the reason why she wasn't adding more ITFs to her itinerary. Why bother?

But clearly she is playing next season and is concerned to secure her MD berth in Australia because she is playing the two Challengers. I have no idea about the set-up in Texas, but the 75K in Phoenix is a really pleasant, beautiful club. Clean and well-organized.

I would like to see her win one of them (she really has the game to win at least one or the other), but even one quarterfinal and one semifinal would put her in the Top 100 and make going to Oz a very worthwhile expedition -- what with the significant prize money increase. Even if Mirjana lost in R1 at the Oz Open, she would make close to 30K in US $$, which more than pays for the whole trip.

And, we hope she plays Auckland, Hobart, and/or NSWales, too.

As usual ... If she could only fire herself up to get a good, solid start to a new season (instead of waiting till May to find some game), her ranking would start to reflect the caliber of her actual talent (which I suspect is Top 60 ... Not 110). She needs to play lots of matches next year ... And at least some of the more elite Challenger events.

Let's hope she schedules very wisely and puts some matches together at key times for confidence. She'll be what, 31, or 32 in the Spring? That's not so bad, if she stays fit.

Venus, as bad as she has been for two years, just won Luxembourg at age 32.

Make a final, focused push for the year at these Challengers, Lucic, then enjoy the holidays with family and hubby knowing you are clear for Oz's main draw in 2013.

Yep. You're exactly right. I forgot about Saquenay. 32 points (a semifinal run) there.

I'd she can net just 30 points, total, in these next two Challengers (which would mean 62 points between the two, including that 32 she must defend) her Oz MD is probably guaranteed. Basically she will have to reach at least one quarterfinal and one semifinal at both events, doesn't matter which one is a quarter or semi. 2 quarterfinals will leave her likely to squeeze into the main draw, assuming the usual number of withdrawals.

I hope she can. It would be a great goal and if she manages it, it could end her year as a Top 100 for the first time since 2000. Hope so. But I think she an the hubby were supposed to honeymoon in the Far East this winter, so, on their way over, she might be inclined to stop in Dubai or Toyota ... Just in case. Would be nice to see her have fun and bring solid tennis to these ITFs.

Good luck ... And how about that Vekic? She is really making her move. Great to see this for Croatian tennis and fans.

Chris Evert (my all-time fave women's player) said recently that Vekic is THE newcomer to watch next season on the WTA . No small praise, coming from Chrissie. She very rarely outright endorses anybody in particular. For example, she had a very clear "wait-and-see" attitude about Oudin that proved rather true.

I do hope, though, that Miki gets to play Vekic soon ... And wins. :-)

Could be quite good. Anything that will even give her the mental edge in some of these close matches she should be winning to get into R16s and QFs when she has favorable draws -- and she has had quite a few this year.

Prpic is by far the most experienced coach she has had yet. She'll make around $200,000 by the end of the year -- she is making a living out there on the WTA. Now, she can maybe move that next key step. Hey, if Irina Camelia Begu and Babs Lepchenko can assault the Top 20-50, one has to believe Mirjana has the talent, if she gets optimal coach and mentality. Still time.

She seems really motivated to finish the year well, with a world-class coach behind her. Several factors coming together for her. Between this event and a hopefully nice push in Phoenix, she could finish the year in the WTA Top 100 for the first time since 2000.* That alone would be remarkable. Her Oz Open MD berth is likely a lock. Nice stuff from her this week ... But the thumping of MLDB really impressed me. Lucic simply could not get the upper hand against the Screamer twice before this season. I expect a lot of confidence against Duque Marino. If she gets to the final, we know she'll fight. GL and well-done this week, La Lucic.

* Anybody know the cut-off date for determining the official Year-End ranking stats for all players? Is it the end of next week? Tried to find out on the WTA site, but their formerly excellent site has been reduced to a crappy site, now that Sony Ericsson has withdrawn as sponsor.

disapointing she lost to Duque-Marino. I thought De Brito would be the tougher opponent. Looks like she should have won 3 and 3. Still has problems mentally when trying to serve out sets. Better luck next week and could still win the doubles this week.

Ouch. Poor Miki. Big choke. 5-7 6-7 loss.

5-3 leads in both sets, on serve.

She must be very disappointed to close a fine week (and another seemingly fine match) with a head-trip collapse.

Bright side: she still has dubs tomorrow and earned 32 pts. here and Prpic, hopefully, can tell her what she actually did to blow those leads, technically speaking (stopped moving? got timid? rushed too much?)

Phoenix, with it's slightly bigger points spread ought to just vault her into the Top 100, if she can win a couple of rounds. She certainly will walk out of here knowing she could have won this unfortunate match-up.

Onward for the striving Lucic :-/

She'll be #5 seed in Arizona so there's a chance to play Giorgi or Karatancheva in QF, but if Mirjana's on they are not problem because they play similar game. Mor of a problem for Mirjana are players like Oudin and D-Marino that get all balls back in court.

Actually, in a pleasant surprise, Mirjana is # 4 seed in Phoenix (Pouchkova pulled out). Unless she draws MLDB as a quarter finalist, she should notch some points-rich results here. Might even be nice for her to exact revenge on Marino.

And from those pics, she looks fitter than I have ever seen her. Her arms more toned than ever. Prpic is training her hard. Hopefully she will carry great confidence from this past week. We don't know what tricks D-Marino pulled to grab that semifinal. GL to La Lucic in dubs today and in Arizona next week.

Mirjana and Elena won the doubles title 6-2 7-6. Good job -- and she leaves Texas with a title, a measure of mental revenge against Duque-Marino, and the knowledge that she got four strong matches in singles, with the hiccup against Duque Marino being somewhat mitigated by beating her in dubs for a title. All in all, she lived up to her seeding, could have won this event (I believe) and looks in fine fettle to end her year with verve in lovely Phoenix at the Goldwater event. Good luck, Lucic. Go for that Top 100 finish.

Good luck to Mirjana in Phoenix. She's pretty much guaranteed to get into AO MD, and that was the most important thing.

Now, to finish in the top 100 she'll probably need to reach at least the SF. It won't be easy, as there are a lot of very good players--both established and promising--in the draw: Giorgi, Karatantcheva, Oudin, Bouchard, Keys, Min, etc., etc.

Mirjana seems to be playing well herself (7-1 this week in singles and doubles), so I'm hoping for at least two singles wins. Anyone know if she's playing doubles again?

Wow -- great fight by the ladies. Didn't realize the tiebreak was a third-set sudden death affair.

She must have felt some real satisfaction to pull that off.

I have to think she'll carry good form into Phoenix and feel mentally a bit more ready to keep her composure when pushers are pressuring her serves as she closes out sets. She just has to stay in the moment.

She will have to reach the finals, I think, to get into the Top 100. I think the R/U gets 70 points or something. It would put her just inside the 100. A win would get her close to the upper-80s. She certainly could win a 75K. Won't easily forget her inspired Albuquerque run in 2010. She beat Varvara, who is now nearly Top 20.

Hope she has fun.

Again, wish Mirjana played touraments in India and Taipei.
It turns out they count as WTA tournaments and titles are considered as WTA titles.
So Mladenovic won her first WTA title by beating only one player from TOP100(ranked at 100) and only one other girl from top 150. And it's only gonna be worse in Pune.

Pune - 1 top 100 players, last direct acceptance #392 (would be 3rd seed)

Phoenix- 3 top 100 playes, last direct acceptance #299 (probably 5th seed)

Nice. Good for the ladies. Woof--I forgot how tall Bovina is. Looks like the weather and playing conditions were grand; some spectators out enjoying the tennis.

Can't recommend enough: if even a little 25K comes to your area (and they are everywhere these days) try to go. It's amazing how hard these lower-to-middle tier girls will fight because it means so much to get even one win, for them.

Also nice to walk away from any event with a trophy of some kind :-) Really gives a lift. Trust.

Am very interested to see the Phoenix draw. Miki can go deep and score any upset here, if she is to be seeded 5th. Gotta keep her composure and simultaneously keep her foot on the gas when serving out sets, or trying to break for set close-outs. I'd say her chances are good for the OZ main draw, but a few more wins would be sweet, since she is apparently not playing Tokyo or Dubai.

Have fun out there, tennis players.

I know -- look at these pseudo-WTA events in Asia and their points range! Vekic is playing in Pune and is No.3 seed. Beat a girl 6-0 6-1 today.

It's too bad Mirjana could not have stayed in the East and played these weak fields. But ... Surely Vekic is being backed by confederation money, and Mirjana (and players in her range) have got to be so judicious about every penny they spend.

It's rough for these women with no national backing to defray travel costs. Would love to see Mirjana grind out the wins and take Phoenix to end the year. She can do it.

It was a mistake to got to Asia as early as she did. She could/should have played 50k in Las Vegas and 75k in New Mexico she won 2 years ago(they had weaker field than Phoenix and she would get some nice points) and then probably, go to Asia for Osaka and these 2 WTA tournament ( :help: ). But it easy to be smart now, she took a set of Voskoboeva in Tokyo, just missed QD in Beijjing. Lot of unlucky moments.

Yep ... Tough draw, but she knows this is her last event of the season, she's in form, she knows she is pretty sure-fire for Australia, so I expect she'll be playing with a lot of motivation. Plus, there are some interesting variables in this draw. Mattek-Sands is streaky but capable of beating Oudin ... That's a tough first round for her.

Then Miki has a likely chance to get revenge against Duque-Marino, and the Phoenix club courts are good and fast. She has to want a juicy shot at bouncing Marino (like she was doing in Texas already!).

I always believe she can beat Oudin, and Sesil, and Giorgi ... And now de Brito.

As long as she does her best these days, and remains clearly motivated, it doesn't matter her results, to me.

So long as a player is enjoying and working hard, and she is -- otherwise she would not have been hooking up with Prpic.

One match at a time and we'll see. (And ... Yes, the earlier Challengers followed by Osaka and the 2 Asian events would have been optimum for her. Who knows why many of these players schedule as they do? I expect funds have much to do with it).
