Now I wish Paris had won so we can play on clay. :o Oh how time has changed everything.

Just enjoy the opening ceremony first and then one match at a time. :) We'll see how it goes based on her form. Of course I'd like to see her do well but regardless it's her first ever OG so we should just enjoy seeing her playing there at the very least.

After a good 3 or 4 of days rest and then 3 weeks of preparation she'll be as good good as new and ready to kick ass - All she's to do then is to keep it up for 6 days

Is that her Olympic dress? - Looking good! - Although - superstitious as I am - I'd rather preferred either white or black

I never thought I'd ever say this, but can't they play on clay instead?

It's become pretty obvious that grass is no longer Maria's best surface, if it ever was to be honest. It's now clay (like, I know right), indoors and hard courts.

Just check out her last two losses. Good serving by her opponents on a fast surface when her own serve didn't click.
Oh well, maybe a few more weeks of rest will do her some good. I just hope she enjoys the moments here.

I think Pova should take a good week off. Her tennis isn't the problem as much as she's simply mentally drained, I think. Has she ever played as many matches at this point during the season as she has this year? She just needs a break to let these past few weeks really sink in, to recharge her batteries and to refocus on the second half of the season. :)

Agree with you guys. I don't see that she's in need of intensive training. Even in this tournament, she played near her best in very brief patches - it was just she couldn't string it together on anything like a consistent basis, which as you guys said indicates mental exhaustion more than it does that her serves/footwork/groundstrokes etc. fundamentally aren't good enough.

Though when she DOES start training again, whenever that may be, can she please focus on try and being more aggressive from early in the point rather than the claycourt-style rallying she was doing today :o

Does anyone know if she will play mixed at OG? Last I heard the Russian coach, said it was a thought of his to have her play with one of the guys, but he hadn't talked to her about it. When would a decision have to be made? Part of me would like to see her play mixed, just because I think it would be fun to see her playing mixed. And Youzhny is playing well right now. Selfishly, I think it would be great to see her play it. I remember how excited Federer was when he won the men's doubles gold. Still, I know it would be better for her game if she focuses on singles.

What do you think Maria can do at the OG?
I really think, after the rest she will have taken, that her determination and fighting spirit will bring her very far, maybe even win the whole thing. I also think that Serena is beatable, seeing how she's played during Wimbly. I mean one day when her serve is off, Maria can defo eat her alive.
What are your opinions?

There's no question Maria will be hungry, four weeks is a long time to be out of competition for a fighter like Maria. I love that she's doing ESPYs and all but I would prefer her to take these four weeks rest, rehab and practice those flat shots for OG. Serena is definitely beatable and along with Petra playing her best I pretty much view Maria as the only other player with the weapons to beat Serena when she's playing well. But it depends which Maria shows up on the day.

I guess after 2 months running at full speed, it will be good for her to go home and rest.
And more weeks of time to get used to grass, she played so much time on clay before winning RG, so more training before the OG will be needed.

E.Bychkova on Sharapova as OG flagbearer, "I did hope it was a joke. It's as laughable as it gets -- an American as the Russian flagbearer".
"She's been living in US since she was 7. She has American mentality, it's a fact. Picking her is like picking a naturalised Russian".

russian - http://www.sports.ru/tennis/141808692.html

Bychkova  The bitch can only suck it and watch it  They are really getting annoying with this, Maria has Russian roots and she says that she feels Russian. And that is more than enough for me. Stupid vultures. They would have more arguments in saying that Lisicki is not really German, I mean hey she is just playing for their country, but you don't hear them talking crap about that, do you?

Anyway, I can't for the OG to start (primarily tennis, but other sports as well :hearts:). And I can't wait to see Maria carry the Russian flag. Btw, I wonder which other tennis players will do the same? I know that Novak and Rafa will, but I still wonder about Fed. He really deserves it, although it seems he was already the bearer, twice

Let's all tone it down a little bit, shall we? This was expected, at least from my part, and I am almost sure that 99% of their athletes think the same. Maria surely doesn't care. It is not good from their part to express it publically since I know what kind of comments will that cause all over the internet, but I am sure a lot of them secretly think the same. Just like ATP does about women's paychecks ;)

Historical facts:

Masha has won all her slams in even years (2004 - 2006 - 2008 - 2012)

She's won them in order - Wimbledon first - USO - AO and FO

When she won them she was mainly dressed either in black or white

Something to ponder on - right? - However - the Olympics isn't a slam but could be seen as an irregular tournament - So she might be able to win gold upon her FO slam

Wimbledon. Neither are likely to happen again without some serious intervention by the draw gods though. The USO's surface suits Maria more than grass IMO, but there's little chance her serve will hold up for seven matches in the Arthur Ashe Windtunnel.

Now that she's won a Slam there's no reason why they won't Maria on at night. If Serena/kim are on the opposite half she will literally have zero competition for those spots. That said she'll more than likely have to play three day matches at least. Two in the first week and the SF. Given how she served in the wind at RG and now that she's covering her shots with a bit of spin to keep the errors down we can be cautiously optimistic. But there's a lot of road to the USO.

Maybe you should think a bit deeper and things won't be so fucked up. Olympic points cannot be defended. It's a one-off tournament. So, the points given for Olympic Glory need to be in moderation so as not to destroy a player's ranking next year when Olympic points dissipate into thin air.

The China Open is an annual event. Points can be defended one year to the next under the same tournament conditions.

I don't recall the discussion about giving points for Olympic competition. I have questions why the decision was made to do that and I doubt there is a player on the roster that is participating because of the points. Just participating in the Olympic Games is Honor and Glory enough, regardless of medals and points.

You are raging all over the TF boards about the Ranking System and making some wildly outrageous assertions about it. The current WTA Ranking System is actually pretty darn good. I suggest you read through the Rules in the WTA site for a better understanding of why the system works the way it does.

The main thrust of the System is to get the Best players competing against one another at as many tournaments as possible to encourage long term rivalries, which makes the game more exciting for fans and will force the best players to really sharpen up their games. So, while many tournaments are now mandatory, others are off limits to the Top 10/20 to discourage MM Queens.

I'm sorry, the "defending points" argument is AWFUL  You say it like "the winner doesn't get a chance to defend their points" - but, after the 1-year period, it's not like they'll have less points than they otherwise would - they'll have simply been boosted in their ranking points for the 1 year after the Olympics (and rightly so), but once the points drop off, they'll still have the same amount of points than they would if the Olympics gave less/no points.

Imo, they should either not give any points for the Olympics atall (if they're going by the argument that a Gold is reward enough in itself and there shouldn't be ranking points aswell), or they should do it properly and make the points actually reflect the Olympics' significance for the players, i.e. the same amount of points for a Gold medal as a YEC win (1500 points). Like I said, as of now, the ranking system tries to have us believe it's less significant than the China Open, when in reality players consider it the year's 5th Slam. And let's face it, at the end of the year, in the GM debates about who the best player of the year is, posters WILL be using the Olympic Gold as an argument, they certainly won't be using the China Open as part of an argument for a player being the best of the year

There are some sports for which Olympic Games have not the same prestige and significance like for many other sports. Football and tennis are such sports. Any tennis tournament with 64 players is stronger than the Olympic tennis tournament.

I totally agree. As I said for me Grand Slam titles are much more important for Maria's legacy than olympic medals. But either one of them is welcome

The Olympic games might not be of as much significance for Maria's career as a tennis player and her standing among the all time greats in tennis as the Grand Slams, but for Maria, the athlete, the sportswoman, they bear great significance for her standing among the all time greats in all sports. Let alone the value a medal would have for Maria the person, the competitor.

Personally for Maria these OG are very important. Maria and Serena are the only players who could make Golden Career Grand Slam (GCGS). If Serena will not win gold in London most probably never will make GCGS. Therefore Maria has a chance to achieve something which Serena never will.
The other point is also important. For the Russians Olympic medal means a lot. If Maria win gold medal in Russia it will be considered very high level achievement.
And the next point is even more important - Olympics are Maria's dream during many many years.
Considering all that I could say OG are more important for Maria than any other title till the end of the season.

After all the times Maria has mentioned how important Olympics are for her personally and how it's been her dream since childhood, I really want her to win a gold medal.
It doesn't matter where it would put her in tennis history books and statistical reports, but it is pretty obvious that it would mean very much to Maria the person and that's what matters IMO.

I misunderstood your post then, but anyway I meant that, for example, the olympic tournament in football is played by the "under 21" teams, while the olympic tournament for tennis is played by the best players. That's why an olympic medal in tennis has much more value than an olympic medal would have in football.

I had a serious doubt about the way she played during wimbledon. Very passive , it almost seemed like she hadnt realised its grass. So much spin on all shots , was easier for opponents to track down and hit flat winners ,which didnt do much good for her. The serve though a bit wobbly sometimes was still better than a lot of other parts.

IMO last year she played better and i am not talking about the result of making final/4th round.

For olympics if she intend to win a medal, she clearly would have to change her approach far away from RG-style shots to ore wim 11 or 06 kind

What do you guys think?

PS: i am no expert tbh , i watched her matches this year at W and seemed very much unlike her style of play.

I agree, last year she looked in better grass form... This year she was too passive... Too defensive, the fh was non-existent and the serve went to USA, and the footwork was bad... LOL I contribute that to her tiredness mental and physical... Will she be better in a few weeks? Dunno... She hasn't played many matches on grass so I am worried, maybe I worry for nothing, but I prefer to be careful...

Not necessarily. It's good practice for her serve and her return. And she'll practice those in training sessions anyway. She could replace those practice sessions with playing doubles instead. And if she wins a medal it's not the same as doing well in doubles at a slam. At a slam winners in doubles are always a bit under the radar compared to the singles champs. But at the Olympics a medal is a medal, no matter what the event is.

Not sure if the big companies make the dresses based on team, if you take OG 2008 as an example Novak Djokovic had black and white (not Serbian colours), Ana was supposed to wear a black dress with white details - both were for Adidas... Nike always made for Maria red and white, same for Roger, I think they will go with that combo his year, too.
