Too bad Jon Wertheim believes in Makiri more than Makiri does. I'm not expecting anything from Maria at Wimbledon. She has never made the second week there and her recent form and heartbreaking losses in singles and doubles has to hurt her confidence. How can Masha and Nadia lose to powder puffs Errani and Vinci on grass?

I would love to se something spark Makiri's fine all court game but at this point I can't see it. Her game is in a rut and she doesn't know how to get her game out of that rut. Too bad she doesn't solid have tennis professionals running her career. :( Solid is a word Maria needs to learn about. Her talented all court game is not solid enough that's for sure. Nor is her confidence and self belief. What a shame.

Did Maria notice who was winning the grass court warmups? Players not as good as she is. I wish that frustration would jolt Makiri forward. :smash: But if she's happy with her life and career what can we do other than root her on?

NYKiriFan
Jun 28th, 2012, 09:10 AM
Sure, I'd give her less than 50% chance of making the QFs, but she's still the favorite of these four. Looking at her Slams since 2010, she's won about 2/3 of her matches against players ranked in the 30-60 range -- that's three losses out of her last 10 Slam exits.

So yes, no reason to have overwhelming confidence she'll advance, but I'm not sure she's a lot worse than other players in the 15-25 rank range against this kind of favorable draw.

peterlein
Jun 28th, 2012, 11:35 AM
oh yeah you are right, her draw has really opened now!! :)
..who knows if and when she will get such a good opportunity again to reach a GS quarterfinal...

I am sure she knows that too, and I hope it won't give her too much pressure..
maria also should only see from match to match...

so next is sorana, who is leading 2-1 in their H2H...
so it's gonna be a very difficult match, so no comparison to the first two rounds imho

but she has a chance if she continues like she played so far in wimby...then you need some luck too on deciding points, so let's hope this time it will be on her side :cheer:

and this time she really seems hungry after the frustrating last weeks (with the bad losses in singles and unlucky losses in doubles finals), which is good ;)

Good luck to Makiri today against Cirstea. This is one of the biggest singles matches of Maria's career. If she wins she will have made the second week of all four grand slams in her career. With so many tough singles and doubles losses for Kiri lately a win today would be so sweet for her.

Too bad Kiri and Sorana have to play the last match on court 18 today. What a stupid schedule from the All England idiots. :fiery:  Maria's match should be first up not a women's doubles match. What the hell. Now Kiri and Cirstea have to wait all day to play and who knows how long the men's best of 5 set match will take. :(

Wow well done Maria. :) I did not expect such an easy win today for Makiri over Cirstea. Now she has 2 days to prepare for her first ever round of 16 appearance at Wimbledon. Now Masha has made the second week at all 4 majors as well as making the top 20 in singles and top 10 in doubles. That's a very good career for 98% of WTA players. But I want and expect more from Maria with her fine skillset and mobility and think all her fans want and expect more from her as well.

I didn't realize how lousy a year Peng was having -- just 2-12 against the top 70 (wins over Bartoli at Dubai & Paszek at French), and a 100+ loss.

No guarantees with Kiri of course, the AO 2010 QF loss to Zheng still a bad memory, but you couldn't ask for her to have a much better chance of advancing to the Wimbledon QF at this point.

Cheers, great to be on-board with some fellow Kiri-admirers. :)

She is indeed looking much improved, especially on this surface. A tough but winnable tie against Peng coming up - if she can re-produce a similar performance I don't see her having too many problems.

Radwanska in the QFs is where she'll probably come unstuck, but it'll do her ranking no harm and it'd be great to see Kiri pushing towards breaking into the top 10 for the first time.

I assume the next round of doubles would also be Tuesday. If Maria wins on monday that is just too much tennis for her on tuesday and tuesday would be a Wimbledon QF match which would be the most important match of her career. It's shame the All England Club still chooses to not play tennis on sundays because it's a setback for the schedule ever year. Especially if it's a rainy sercond week.

As for Maria apparently struggling in the second set against the Williams sisters in doubles that surprised me because it's usually Nadia who wilts. But let's be real the Williams sisters are by far the strongest women's doubles team of all time and it can't be easy playing against them even for a fine doubles player like Makiri.

11:30 AM
Ladies' Singles - 4th Round
Tamira Paszek (AUT)

Ladies' Singles - 4th Round
Maria Kirilenko (RUS)[17]
v

I think it will be a difficult and tight match, peng is having a tough year with some injuries, but she seems back on her way, so it's hard to give a prediction..

their H2H is 1-1, but they didn't meet since 2006 and they didn't meet on grass yet

if kiri plays and serves like she did in the previous matches, then I think she has good chances!

This is easily one of the biggest wins of Maria's career today. A very sweet win too when she had a good chance to win it in straight sets.

In reality this was a clutch win for Makiri over Peng. Well done Maria. :D Masha deserved this win and was the better player today according to the statistics. I only wish Kiri won in straight sets because now she has to finsih her doubles match today against the Williams sisters and then play Radwanksa tomorrow. This is asking alot of Maria who had a tough and emotionally draining singles match today.

Doug Adler was color. He was annoying as soon as he opened his mouth, calling Kiri the new Kournikova, though he couldn't remember Kournikova's name. In the second set, every single point was just a huge MOMENTUM SWING because he had nothing better to say. When Kiri lost the second set, he was just convinced Kiri would lose, and he kept pushing that theory all the way through. The play-by-play guy, who also did Kiri's last match solo, was okay.

Looks like no doubles for Kiri today. She's still in the second round of doubles. Atleast now Maria can focus on Radwanska and her fine game and try to figure out ways to disrupt Aga. Aga is #3 in the world and she's playing great at Wimbledon. Radwanska is not even playing close matches this Wimbledon. She is cruising. Makiri must make Aga worry about a possible loss so she recall memories of Maria beating her at the 2009 U.S. Open in a very tough match. :yeah: ;) Masha really has everything to gain in this match. Aga must win this match or she will look bad as the world #3 so the pressure is her. Hopefully that kind of pressure will hurt Aga's game tomorrow.

Great victory for Maria, after 2nd set loss I thought she would lose the match but she finally prevailed !! :worship:

Now I hope she does her best against Aga.

Speaking about Kournikova, if Kiri manage to get one day in top 10 like her, she would totally outclass Anna because she is as hot as her and Maria has won tournaments ;)

In fairness, subsequent chatter suggested he made the comparison because Kirilenko was dating Ovechkin, and then mentioned how Kournikova had dated Federov. But comparing someone to Kournikova is more often than not a negative statement about quality of one's tennis play being inferior to one's media attention.

Of course, Kournikova's most distinguished tennis achievement was her Wimbledon semifinal appearance, so I'll be happy if Kiri can live up to that part of the comparison. ;)

As for the doubles, yuck. So some third round doubles matches are finished even before the 2nd round Kiri/Petrova vs. Williams/Williams. Just absurd.

oh yeah my friends, after the second set I also thought se would lose it.. I must admit that I was so angry because of that rain delay, because it nearly ruined her wimby QF ;)

but a lot of credit to maria, to change momentum again after that tough 2nd set!
I mean, she was broken twice, and twice she managed to get back on serve! Even in the tiebreak she was down 2-5 or something, but also there she came back to 6-6 on her own service, saving some setpoints! There she showed what a big fighter she is, and at this point, I really thought she would win it in straight sets....then shuai played really good again (as almost over the whole 2nd set), hitting the ball clean, and always right on the lines..
and so shuai won the tiebreak, and kiri could have been mentally down after all those great comebacks without happy end.
But she started to be more aggressive again, like she was in the 1st set.
Maria had a break-opportunity already at shuai's first service game. She couldn't convert it, but you had the impression that she mentally is still full in the match!
It was crucial then to finally break (after wasting two bp's first) in the 5th game for a *3-2 lead, I think that was the deciding moment for kiri's win!
From that on, maria wasn't in danger to give it away again, staying very aggressive and focused, well done! :worship:

now comes aga, and I guess kiri has nothing to lose, no kind of pressure for her! quarterfinal is already more than ever expected, considering the tough last month

The only thing that has kept my interest in Wimbledon this year is Makiri's fine play. The scheduling is a joke as is not playing on sunday when they knew damn well week 2 would be filled with rain. It's day 8 and Masha has still only completed 1 doubles match.  I don't think I have ever seen anyhting like that before.

Maria did well to hold serve to open the match and then serving at 2 - 4. I hope the rain delay makes Aga worry and that that affects her play when play resumes. Tough for Kiri to play her all court game when the whole court is wet and slippery. :fiery: I am an old school tennis fan so I never thought I would say grass is a crap surface but I am sick of it and the rain and the scheduling and the assinine off day. And what's this crap about having to end play at 11pm London time when the roof is closed on centre court? Do they do that in Oz and New York? Hell no they play until 2 in the morning if need be. Good God the All England Club is a lost in the 18th century in the 21st century. :(

Why can't these officials move Maria / Aga inside on centre court to finish the match after the Kerber / Lisicki match is finsihed. Then the other QF should be played after Kiri's match is finished. Then the women's semi's are set today. It would be a disaster for Masha and Aga to not finish until tomorrow.

Masha has really good overall numbers in this match. She has 40 winners through 2 sets. It really is a shame that this rain delay has stalled her momentum. This is a high quality match played by 2 fine all court players.

This big delay is not good for Kiri, she needed to keep playing :(

the delay must not be a disadvantage for kiri, it would rather be if she would leading *5-4 or so and still had to close it out..

but the 2nd set is hers, and aga will now think a lot of her missed chances to finally win it in two (she was up a break twice), now she has to go out again and to win another set..
