The journey of Maria, and her apetite for Grass Slam.

8 years ago, an unknown hero was born.

2004
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OgPerlNhD1o/T4tE-lRcRrI/AAAAAAAADOo/zoYhXkii1uk/s1600/Maria_Sharapova_Pic_0.jpg

Our Hero, Maria was in a serious dilemma between her two personae: Cowpova and Goatpova. Throughout the years, she has battled her demons - have succeeded, and then failed. In her quest find balance between her two personae, she has come close in succeeding, but failed miserably. But in the summer of 2004, one fateful day, she has battled and won this plate called Wimbledon. The plate shines with grace and as it showers Maria with its almighty shines, Maria grew stronger, and the imbalance of her good and evil has been stabilized. For a year, this source of strength has guided Maria in her journey and gave her remarkable power and forehand to obliterate the evil that threatens the society she has taken an oath to protect.

However, one night, she has learned that she was not the only one after the holy plate: other heroes who seem to be sisters were battling for it too, and in 2005, the plate was snatched from our hero by another more powerful being than her, whose name is Venus: the goddess of grass. The moment the plate of life was taken from Maria, the instability emerged as she started to find cracks in the dimensions that keep her egos balance. She has become weaker and unstable, but she embarked on a long journey that she dedicated herself into. It became a mission to find a source of strength, and the only way to find it was to fight through the dangerous path of slams.

In the years to come, Maria has battled her demons, finding more ways to find balance between her good and evil. In 2006, she has captured an alternate source of balance in USO where she had taken a drink out of the Holy Grail Trophy that gave her stability and power for the next two years. Still, she realized that this was not enough, so she pursued to capture the plate once more. So she did in 2006, 2007, and failed. She quickly learned Venus and her sister, Serena (the goddess of earthquake) has found a way to exploit the power of Wimbledon, giving them unprecedented strength that they used to dominate all that there is in there path in the long years to come. Maria learned that she needs to find a source of balance elsewhere.

Therefore Maria has decided to find another source of power, as the balance between her egos is breaking apart and she is about to loose it all, and in 2008 she has battled her way through the Australian Open. The fight was not easy, but in the end she has won the lamp of wishes. As Maria gently rubbed the AO trophy, a magical genie appeared before her eyes.

"Who has awaken I, the god of tennis," the genie rumbled in anger.

"Me, Maria," she muttered with intimidation, but yet she was adamant.

"What can I do for you?"

"I want a cure for my demons, I want power, I want strength"

"Your three wishes are my command. By the power of the Acegods, I know infuse you with your grants. Be smart and be careful with your consequences."

"What consequences?" she asked with some fear.

"That is for you to find out. Good bye my brave soldier. Save the world," the echoes vibrated through the wind as the genie disappeared into thin air.

to be continued :oh: I need a break.

I would love to see them in opposite halves. What's sure is sure  I expect Serena to bring her GOAT tennis to Wimbly. She had plenty of time after her RG first round exit :oh: Plus, the grass really suits her massive serves and powerful groundstrokes where she can finish points with two or three shots... I would love to see her face Petra in the semis, that should be interesting in my opinion. I expect Petra to fully upgrade her game for Wimbly. The grass suits her style, plus she is a defending champion after all, isn't she?

Jamie, there is no way in hell that the AELTC will bump Serenka to #4. They consider #1 to #8 to be identical. The problem scenarios involve the part timers Venus and Kim. Neither has done anything in the last two years to merit getting a seed position over the players who have earned them playing tennis for the last 52 weeks. They should remain unseeded.

This means Serenka will be in Pova's quarter along with Venus and Kim at least being in Pova's half. I am afraid you can take that to the bank.

That's why I'm not too keen on IW/Miami. They're not Slams as hard as they try, poor coverage for the opening 4 days. And by that stage I just want the clay run to start. But I think the AO being as early as it is makes it exciting.

Flipping between the RG thread and the W thread, I get completely different sensations, feelings, atmospheres. No one's said anything directly or commented on it, but, does anyone else feel what I feel?

2012 RG was all about completing unfinished business, conquering the Demons Past and Redemption. It was about calming the anxiety and fear of failure to measure up to fierce competition. It was about letting the World know, unequivacally and without question, that Pova's measure was taken and found to be unexcelled in Tennis.

As I click into the 2012 W thread, I feel optimistic, positive and excited for the future and for our girl, Pova, who, like the Phoenix, has risen from the ashes. A new world, full of opportunities for incredible Glory and the inevitable heartbreaking defeats, awaits our Champion.

I love the January start, because it's like right after New Years it's time for the tennis season to start.

My biggest issue is the spring hard court season. Indian Wells and Miami don't produce the quality tennis that they did five or six years ago IMO.

We'll never know what would Maria accomplish in 2008 if her shoulder didn't bother her but miraculously we may be able to relive the history this year.

I agree. I think it's the surface change that favors more baseline grinding games and the fact that there aren't any spectacular hard court specialists like Clijsters left. That being said, I love Indian Wells, mostly because I might go there next year (and Maria doesn't have to fly to the courts) ;). You can't really take away prestige that easily. Larry Ellison did a lot to improve it.

Miami seems anti-climatic to me now. It's the second Premier Mandatory in a row, and the week after it goes straight to clay season.

Kuznetsova and Pavs will be sitting ducks for Maria. I don't expect Clijsters to come out suddenly playing good tennis either, especially since this is grass and she hasn't played really well since...forever. Venus is a darkhorse.

Kuznetsova will probably end up getting seeded. She's currently #33, but Petkovic is almost certainly not going to play. Of course, they could bump Venus or Kim into a seed slot, but I can't see them keeping Sveta out over some of the names above her. (What has Niculescu ever done on grass?!)

Plus there's a few other players who have injuries in the Top 32 at the moment, Zvonareva and Peng being the most obvious two.

Tatiana also talked about Maria when they were little at another time on French tv, she said that maria was alone for a while at the academy (when I guess the other kids had their parents with them) and that Yuri used to make Maria practiced one hour before the normal practice and one hour after, so when the kids would be practicing 4 hours, maria used to do 6 hours.
She also said that she didn't like to play maria when they were little bc everything was going too fast lol, and that maria already had the same routines.

Justine commented the matches on tv and only said good things about maria, that she didn't like to play her bc she was intimidating and that you only hear her screams if you aren't focus on the game.

it's about time she is to prove that she can also beat tough opponents on grass and go deep regardless of the draw

Each day if you arrive at about 10AM/11AM you can join the queue for the next day. Where you'll have to camp out, then the next day they offer out tickets. There's about 500 places for CC and C1 each, so if you're there at about 11 you should definitely be near the front and get whatever ticket you want. Does ground passes apply to all courts except CC and C1. Wimbledon really do rotate the top players though. So don't be surprised if Maria isn't on CC/C1 for 1 or 2 of her early round matches. Last year it was R3/R4 I believe?

Forgot to ask. Anyone going this year?

I haven't been to Wimbledon for quite a few years now. I have watched some great matches on Centre Court and No.1 court. I would buy a day pass and just hang around the grounds. It is easy to watch matches on the outside courts as there is no entrance gate. Sometimes you might see some biggish names. Once a major match is over, they sell tickets that people hand in so you can buy secondhand tickets for cheaper and still get into CC etc. But it is getting harder now depending on who is playing next.

I used to go to the front and wait for players to leave and get in the cars.

I love going to Wimbledon just for the atmosphere. Just walk around the grounds and if you are lucky you might see one or two players walking around with their team.:wavey:

I might go this year when Maria is playing the early rounds. I can always watch on the big screen outside. I hope to catch a glimpse of her getting in the car when she leaves. It all depends on the weather.

It's really common in Russia to call people cows. My sister is clumsy so we always call her a cow(but in Russian) and whenever we see cows we always call them my sisters family. It's really just a joke, nothing to be offended by.

and anyways, it only works for Clay and Grass courts so you won't be hearing much of it soon. Plus it's great that Maria is a cow. If she gets hungry during a match she can just reach down and eat some grass.

I'm very careful with what I wish for, so I don't hope for anyone in, or not in her draw.
As always, I'm hoping for a good one, not too difficult, but challenging enough for her to find her form, and win.

The fact that Masha has called herself "a cow on ice" - doesn't mean that anyone here should call her a cow - Besides - Masha's "cow on ice" comment referred to herself and Roland Garros at a time she felt unfamiliar on that surface - and nothing else

I dunno how you Masha fans can find it OK to insist that Masha is a cow and keep on "joking" about it - She has shown that she maybe was a "cow on ice" some years ago - she is NOT anymore - She won the French Open for gawd sake - so give her some dignity!

"Maria @ Wimbledon 2012" is catchy enough - But hey - if all you Masha fans here wanna degrade your own icon by calling her a cow - a "Moo" and whatnot for the whole world to see (You know that all your comments are reflected on Google I hope?) - who am I to protest?

Serena can stay wherever she wants but nowhere near Maria, not on grass. I wanted a rematch on red clay it didn't happen so now it's over. I can already see her saying she is the n1 i have nothing to lose blablabla and then serve like a machine, i don't want this to happen.

That would be a dream scenario.

It would be quite the contrary for me to be honest. I hate when Maria loses to Serena therefore watching her lose yet another match to her only this time in a final would be horrific for me :o

Easy for me cos I've never liked Serena, always wanted her to lose (never happened often) even before Maria came along. Became a fan of Maria during the 3rd round on wimbledon and even moreso after beating serena in final. Now i want Serena to lose ASAP and be as far away from maria as possible in the draws

I have mixed feelings about Maria playing Serena at Wimbledon. On the one hand, I want to see Maria beat her in the finals and I know she can if EVERYTHING is in her favour. Her serves, the weather, her ROS, her non-existent game plan etc. On the other hand, Serena brings out her best tennis when she plays Maria like she has something to prove.

I sympathize with MashaFan01's stand.

Not so much about the "Moo" stuff and the epic "cow on ice" comment but from the standpoint of the triteness of the title. It was ok during the mad rush to save SS from infamy of having Abesky as the OP for the W thread. Now, perhaps it's time to rethink the title and install a more elegant one.

Not the biggest deal but a deal. Nonetheless, the most important issue is cheering her on for the first round even if it's over a week before we know exactly who her opponent is. My bet is that it will be either Kim(50) or Venus(47)...

This.
I think we all show how much we love and care for Maria, plus is just a thread title and if anyone coming here would stop 1 minute to read the messages we write in SS would understand we would never ever mock her or call her "a cow" (in fact noone has ever called her like this, we just used the nickname "Moo" for the thread titles).
People on this board (in GM for example) bashing Maria, and not only her - I talk about users who are HATERS in general, about every player - are far worse than a little joke in a title.
Not even Valkyre who is a new member here who posts on Maria's official board did say something about this nickname, so I guess it's not a deal AT ALL.
