View Full Version : The Williams Sisters: Fashion icons or Fashion flops?

This week at Roland Garros I have noticed much discussion about fashion, maybe it's a French thing, but undoubtedly fashion has always been a hot topic in tennis. It got me thinking about the most iconic outfits on the WTA and much of those were worn by Venus and Serena. Their status as sporting icons is undoubted; but how about their status as fashion icons? Both are intuitive and incredibly creative when it comes to their on court apparel, with many successes as well as many fashion faux-pas. So what's the general train of thought on this topic? Other players who you may consider to be fashion icons are welcomed here too.

Nice try, Claran. Nothing you write will change the fact that Roland Garros is completely irrelevant now that Serena and Venus Williams left the building.

ReeRee - Fashion icon
VeeVee - Fashion flop

VeeVee's only good dress was in 2008, that goddess dress, the rest were pretty crap, whereas ReeRee's outfit in 2004 has to rank up there as one of the best oncourt outfits of all time

How long have you been a tennis fan?

Venus has worn quite a few notable outfits. With that said, I first remember Mary Pierce wearing some interesting outfits. Venus was the first that did a lot cut out, halter neck outfits. My favourite outfits were her 2003 DV Wimbledon, 2002 Ausopen, 2001 US Open halterneck dress, 2001 Pilot pen outfit,Wimbly 2008 and her Eleven 2007 black US Open outfit.

I loved Serena's puma outfits. Catsuit, RG 2002, her yellow 2001 US Open dres and Wimbly 2000.

Anna K also had some really nice outfits. Probably from 1999 to 2002 we had a lot different interesting outfits from a few interesting players. Where as now, nike and adidas has a lot of clone outfits, practical and comfy, but nothing different or controversial.

Anyway this thread, is useless without pics, and i'm too lazy to find any...

They'll go down as fashion icons but I cant stand the dresses that Venus has been wearing!! They look cheap and are ugly as hell!!!! Eleven is a line of clothing that are for the middle class and the common peasant. Theyre not fit for a Queen. Venus has money..and should dress like money!!

Venus and Serena have been fashion icons. Whether you like what they wear or not they changed the way tennis outfits on the court. Before chicks were wearing boring retarded shapeless shit like this:

I'd say Serena is middle of the road because since she signed with Nike its all been cookie cutter, but nice none the less. Most people get excited about her looks mainly cause shes got curves. Her "nice" dressed these days have more to do with how her curves fill out these plain jane dresses than anything else. When she was with Puma the only questionable thing she wore was that cat suit.

Venus has had some questionable looks with Eleven, and that AO 2002 (was it 2002?) where her boobs where flying out. but shes also had some killer looks with it. Her dress at the french was simple but nice.

Also, off the court they usually look stunning as well. Of the girls on tour, Serena/ Venus/ Sharapova/ Hingis/ Seles always have their stuff together off the court, but that might also have to do with the fact that they have the most money....

Sure sometimes they take risk that are flops, but if you're boring (Like Serena has been since she signed with Nike) you're just middle of the road.

I always got a "kick" out of both their outfits:bounce: they were always creative and innovative, Serena was very "brave" to wear some of hers:eek: but nevertheless she wanted to make a statement and it usually was the talk of the tournament.:hearts: Venus wore some earlier outfits that I liked but lately they are questionable:confused:, different patches on her outfits and some were fugly.:help:.but I applaud them for their efforts:clap2:..they wanted to be different and to standout from the others with some flair and style :hearts:so that in itself is an accomplishment!:worship:

Venus actually used to be one of the consistently best-dressed players on tour in the early 2000s. Recent years though :help: Loved those short little dresses with the cut out backs, etc. Then she went a little "meh" and circa 2009 became a bit of a disaster, with the OCCASIONAL good look(the tina turner Wimb 2010, the short black leather USO 2010 dresses )

I'm sorry but everyone here is assuming their fashions being iconic means they have to like every outfit they ever wore.

When deciding whether Venus and Serena are fashion icons or not I would look at the following:

Their impact on pop culture (undeniable)
The influence (undeniable)
The notoriety/fame of their their fashion (undeniable)

And not whether I personally like what they wear.

P.s. eing a fashion icon doesn't mean everything will be a hit

jameshazza

Nobody is truly iconic anymore. Thank God Masha hot her gems in before Nike went generic. Have you ever seen the shit they put on at fashion shows, most people puke at it, so it's not really about whether it's nice or not.

serena is definitely a fashion icon but her sister is NOTOf course people disagree but I would love to see a Sharapova fan start a thread like this about her and ask the same question instead of one about Venus & Serena.

As for Venus she has had many iconic outfits and she doesn't need validation from any one on this forum either. A LOT of players have had outfits that people do not like but that does not represent their entire body of work either and believe me I could go down the list on a lot of these players.

The big deal is that Koto Bolofo didn't follow Maria for a year to make an avant garde photography book about her.

Koto's reaction to seeing Venus walking the streets of London......

"I turned a corner in Covent Garden and there was this tall, beautiful black woman," remembers Bolofo, "and I thought, 'I fancy her!' I'd never seen such a graceful woman. She was wearing a bright fluorescent pink raincoat and stood out like a sore thumb." Bolofo contacted her agent, suggesting the project. He had wanted to photograph her ever since he watched her win Wimbledon on the TV. "There was such a strength of woman in her," he says. "I had never seen anyone like this. She was like a gazelle, so pure. But I wanted to photograph her my way - not as a sports star with lots of muscles, but as a woman."

thats cute but has nothing to do with her being a fashion icon/flop. he thought she was pretty.......ok.......

Yep! Fashion isn't always whether everyone likes it or not, it's about doing something different and dramatic. I, for instance, don't like some of Serena's earlier clothing (2002 USO was :hearts: though), but there's no doubt that her dress was different and more exciting than the boring stuff all the other girls wore.

However, I would still say that Sharapova is the current fashion icon of tennis (and sports), hands down. However, that has a lot to do with her natural looks that got her all of these clothing and glamor deals.

I still think her dresses are boring. I mean some of them you could've seen on Chrissie back in the 70s with slight alterations.

You can't say that about most of the Sisters' dresses.

But boring doesn't have to be bad. You can still have boring but chic and stylish dresses which is what it is with a lot of Maria's dresses. It suits her style. But I don't think she pushed the fashion envelope at all but any means.

I haven't posted in this forum for a while, but I'm actually really surprised people don't consider them fashion icons, especially in the sport of tennis. Sure, they've both have awful and/or questionable outfits, but so have most fashion icons throughout history. There is a reason why both sisters have garnered attention from leading fashion figures; Serena is on the current cover of the most influential fashion magazine of all-time (US Vogue). Not only are their outfits memorable and creative, but most of them are beautifully designed. Here are just a few examples from Venus that I'd be super surprised if most people didn't find them visually pleasing and revolutionary for tennis players:

Venus used to have nice outfits with Reebok, but Eleven is just horrible. Uninspired designs, awkward fits, tacky patterns and worst of all, the fabrics used look like cheap polyester! Eleven has really ruined Venus' fashion legacy on court, which is a shame because she had some great outfits in the early 2000s. Off the court, Venus has zero style.

Serena's had safe choices on court for the last few years, nothing too iconic... Her gladiator dress from Wimbledon 2004 was kind of nice. Her offcourt style is infinitely better than Venus' though, she knows how to dress to flatter her body type.

Sharapova and Federer have been the tennis fashion icons for the last decade with Masha's 2008 Wimbledon tuxedo look being the chicest, most original outfit during this time.

Sharapova did have many great outfits from '05-'10. However, as with Serena Nike has just given them same old same old for years. But fashion is undisputedly associated with all three women, so yeah even though right now nobody on tour is a fashion icon, they are still known as such.

I am a SOLID Williams Sisters fan, with that said, Venus sometimes outfits are sometimes dam right ugly. Serena, she is oool, and she doesn't design her stuff either. I recall back when Venus was younger and at her peak or near peak, and she would come out in one of them funny looking outfits that would be so tight, she had to pull it every second. It was crazy.

They have both had some hits & misses. I prefer Reebok Venus & Nike Serena rather than Eleven & Puma versions of them. Any outfit that has players pulling down the skirt or constantly adjusting the straps is a flop. I wish more players would watch a video of themselves training in an outfit rather than standing still in front of mirror before they head onto court for a match. Some outfits (particular Venus') have looked great when she walked on the court but once she starts playing she is fussing around and constantly adjusting them, it takes away from the outfit. How on earth does a clothing manufacturer expect to sell clothes if they don't do the job they're designed for (ie tennis dress not night on the town dress).
For me to consider someone an icon you need to have many more hits than flops and have a style that people want to follow, so the Venus & Serena fall somewhere in the middle.

First of all the William sisters were the FIRST EVER to bring fashion to women's tennis (like or hate it)...hence tennis fans didn't only get their tix worth in big babe tennis, they also got to see style & elegance.
Compare and contrast what Graf, Seles, Sanchez Vicario, Navratilova, etc wore during their days! They literally looked like tom boys.

Therefore Iconic; most of the WTA players look up to them and copy them anyway, including Caro who recently revealed she does chit chat fashion when hanging out with Serena!

Actually it was Suzanne Lenglen, and many women after that well before the Williams sisters.

Does anyone actually care about fashion on the tennis court? Did Steffi and the other great players of the past? And did the people who flocked to see her and the great players? DId their so called boring clothes stop fans wanting tickets for their matches? Does anyone remember fashion? Isn't it here today gone tomorrow? I also think the whole fashion industry is just so fake and most designers don't even do the designing and the clothes are still made in the developing world anyway just like the cheap ones from Primark!

While it's nice if someone looks nice, it's even nicer if they win! I just wonder what the Williams sisters careers would have been if they had been focussed even more on their tennis that's all.

In my opinion, both the sisters are fashion icons and wonderful players.

Well; 'Flop' is currently leading the poll, so I guess that means that their icon status in this field is indeed up for discussion. It's not up for discussion especially here. Most of the people voting flop are haters anyway and would not even begin to know how to separate their hate to really discuss this subject.

I think Venus has some style (off court) but the dresses she wears on the court are horrible. Serena does not have fashion or class from the TV.
All she has is passion for the game unless she loses or is losing, then it is all drama and re-runs on tennis channels.
Venus could or has gotten there. I don't know enough about her clothes to make a final say. Serena should cover those manly arms though.
I don't care if you are Asian, European, Latin or American women with muscular arms in a dress is an oxymoron. From the photos I see here, I say flop. AFAIK, Americans are not discussing them at all when it comes to fashion. Most people would look at actors & actresses for fashion statements not athletic women.
Beyonce can put out anything and outsell the Williams sisters. Venus has a better head on her shoulders than Serena though.

For the reck-urd: Not a hater, their games are nice, just not their clothes.

For all the idiots questioning Venus fashion designer sense take a look at the crap SOME renown fashion icons put on the run way and you will get an idea why Venus thinks she can push the envelope.

Heck look at what Ralph Lauren has for the US team to wear and you'll see even the best makes mistakes.

Some things may look good on the runway but they will never translate or look good off. Some of the things in fashion have no place on the tennis court and I think that may be Venus' prime mistake.

People want to judge other by the fee mistakes the make. If that were they care in real life then half of these designer would have quit year ago.

I'll be the first to admit she's had a heap of misses but she's also had a heap of hits. I like what she's produced this last time for eleven. the yellow nightmare are RG (IIRC) never happened. :)

As for Serena I've loved some of her puma stuff, but I like most of her Nike stuff better especially in the past 5 years.

They are fashion icons because they forced a heap of sport designing company to up the ante. And that's why more of us rush to see what the players are wearing especially in the big tournament.

We knew where this poll would go anyway.

Yes, Vee's Wimbly dress was the best.
