Perianu played another main draw event. I remember because I watched her lose the match to Chakvetadze the year Anna had an amazing summer, 2007????

Mamic looked like she was gonna be around the top 80 or so for a long time, but then she had all those bizarre injuries and they thought they would have to amputate her arm...so she obviously stalled.

There was a British player by the last name Cross that came through the pre qualies at Wimbledon and won a round before being trashed by Lisa Raymond. I believe this was 2001.

Evelyn Fauth won a match at US open in 2001 I believe but lost to Ruano Pascual in a three setter the very next round. Fauth beat Lucic in qualies I believe.

Laurence Andretto won a match at the French on 01, lost to Husarova. And in 2000 someone beat Dokic in round one at the French but I can't spell her name it was something like Coroutchet????

Lenka Nemeckova only won one match I believe in the French 01 as well.

I'm going on memory alone here, so I don't have great details about the matches.

Didn't Christina Wheeler beat Anna Kournikova one year at the French also??

And I am posting yet again...

It was Karen Cross that won a round at Wimbledon 01 and interestingly enough she beat one of the other players mentioned in this thread...Yvette Basting in the first round.

Julie Pullin from Britain won a round at the Aussie open in 2000 before losing to Yi 8/6 or 9/7 in round 2.

In a couple of years I can see this thread being bumped and Jelena Jankovic will be added to the OP.

You have to look at the players they beat. Not exactly household names, either. Plus, a couple of those players nearly won the next round. 8-6 in the 3rd to highly ranked players. A better stat would be like who was the most obscure to ever reach a Slam semi, like Meredith McGrath in 1996 at Wimbledon.

I see your McGrath and raise you Marianne Werdel Witmeyer, Australian SF 1995.

No but the whole point is that a Grand Slam is the highest benchmark of tennis and to even play in a GS is a dream for 90% of the tour,so winning just one match is quite an achievement....plus sidenote the "Fluke/Random" GS SF/run thing has already been done and those players had many other tour level wins and success.

I don't think McGrath was really that obscure. She had a solid game, but was beset by injuries. Her Wimbledon run may have been surprising in some ways, but if you knew the game and her abilities back then, it really wasn't all that farfetched.

Again, Werdel may have been a surprise, but she had a lot of quality results along the way -- she was one of those players you always expected to put together a good solid win. She won at least one tour event and reached quarters/semis I think of the bigger tour events.

Jackie Trail of Paducah, Kentucky won a main draw match at the US Open in both 1997, playing as an amateur, and in 1998, when she qualified. Unfortunately those were the highlights of her career.

Cross actually reached 3R at Wimbledon in 1997 (ranked 322) and had match point against Majoli who had just won the French Open! Was beaten 4-6 7-6 6-4
