She's never lost earlier than 3rd round in a slam since she began playing in 1999. It's 111th ranked Razzano who hands her a first early loss, after months playing a lot of ITFs. Was down 1-5 in the 2nd set TB, won a dozen of straight points and went up 5-0* in the decider. Serena and her BFF Eva Asderaki with all those hindrance calls (OMG that was too much ) failed to come back this time, and Virginie desperately tried to choke but it wasn't enough. That was crazy. After match point number 8 (!), an amazing 46 76(5) 63 win.

Inspired stuff from Virginie.

Serena too tight to play well enough to counter.

EDIT: below is one of the truest posts (#348) in what will end up being a long thread...
...Ever since Serena came back after her injuries/illness, she doesn't seem "determined" to win a GS title - she now seems "desperate" to win a GS title. It's like she hears the ticking clock of her career running out and is running out of opportunities to win more slams. I think that's what we saw today. She's human after all. :awww:

Will Serena stans sit the fuck down now?

This is Serena normal level on REAL clay: serve neutralized, awful footwork exposed.

Virginia won this despite the bad line and hindrance calls against her .

I FUCKING LIVE!!! :haha:

UN BELIEVABLE.

After I watched Virginie play, I had to cheer for her. That was extraordinary--you could see how much pain she was in, she was crying, Eva was making dumb as **** calls (seriously, let's talk about that for a minute. Hinderance? For shouts that sounded like mice compared to the likes of MLDB, Vika, etc? Bull.)

Serena...you had heart and fight as always, but your game was just not there.

And now I know why people hate on Virginie, it's just silly how much she faked and tried to hinder the game.

Azderaki needs banning from tennis, she's a disgraceful disgusting twat that has no consistency in her ruling what so ever.

Well played Razzano. That last game was EPIC, and one of the reasons why I love this sport.

Great fighting from Serena at the end, but she dug herself into too deep a hole in the 3rd set. Paris seems to bring out the worst in her, and her first 1R loss in slam was almost certainly almost going to come here (though shocked that it was this year).

After what Virginie went through last year, I can't help but be happy for her.

Hopefully Sharapova takes the title now.

I can`t believe what i`ve just seen. Serena had the match on her racket, but got very tight in the second set tiebreaker. Then after coming back from down 0-5 and saving 7 MPs, she wasn`t able to cash in on her break chances. Every time Serena had a break chance, it seems like she hit it wide. :help: I have to credit Virginie Razzano for playing well in the crucial points. I don`t know what else is there to say other than

Epic. Historical.

I am very very happy for Virginie. She totally deserved this win. I was kinda meh at 5-0, but then Serena fought hard, and Vivi put ALL of her heart into this match. And fighting!Serena never giving up. What a great match.

I am so happy for Vivi after what happened to her last year, she should have prevented Serena from winning the Serena Slam. She didn't. She will be the one breaking Serena's neat first round in Slam records.

Thank you ladies ! Showing everyone that ladies tennis is not dead AT ALL.

Serena was playing like shit! I really thought she would have won this! I'm glad she lost to Razzano and not to some other scrubs or a top player like Rawanska or Azarenka. Would have love to see Maria beat her in QF tho! Razzano deserves that win tho, and I'm happy for her.

I'll repeat this if the troll comes in here cuz he's supposed to not be afraid to show up if his fav loses. I told you Serena was playing too much and was not a sure bet for RG. In your face now :)

Will Serena stans sit the fuck down now?

This is Serena normal level on REAL clay: serve neutralized, awful footwork exposed.

Virginia won this despite the bad line and hindrance calls against her .

I FUCKING LIVE!!! :haha:

This.

Serena was never really the favorite, no matter what ESPN or the uninformed wanted to tell us. I already wrote about this. Green and blue are not real clay. And it's obvious Serena has issues playing majors lately, on top of her game/groundies, historical real clay issues. She was a contender, but certainly not "The Clear Favorite".

The Champ will come out of the bottom half of the draw allright, but it'll probably be from 3 other women not named Serena.

When will they learn.

Serena was awful but it was a spectacular match. No single game like that last one has kept me on the edge of my seat like that for some while.

Congratulations must be given where it's due. I'm happy for Virginie, even though I'm no fan of hers; I can relate to her somewhat with the events she has had to deal with in her life recently, and to see such unbridled joy written on her face on this day is very touching. Good luck to her in the next round.

However the whole Asderaki/Serena/hindrance thing is officialy CLOSED now methinks

Serena had to basically pull off a Wozniacki like pushing in that last game and Razzano would have crumbled. What was that four or five missed returns alone? :faceplam: That was very unlike Serena. I wonder whether the whole crowd/hindrance issues got to her. Asderaki threw her a lifeline and she blew it in a very clumsy way :o

Razzano deserved to win that match so damn much. Reached higher levels of play throughout the match compared to Williams. This is a heartwarming win for her after what happened with her husband/coach this time last year.

This loss must hurt a lot for Serena and her fans...but her fight was still incredibly admirable despite her serve, the shot which she typically falls back on to claw back in matches, not working at all. I'm sure she'll bounce back on the grass.

Eva's 2nd & 3rd hindrance calls were completely OTT, I didn't even hear anything when she called the second one. French crowd are still pigs and as unsportsmanslike as ever, Serena hit one great sliding BH DTL to save MP and they didn't give an inch to even applaud it.

What happened with those two calls from Eva? I did not get it at all. What is BFF?

Awful result. Very bad for the Tour and the rest of Roland Garros.

Nah. Shows Serena that if she's planning on half-arsing her schedule she can forget about winning slams anymore.

Anywho, like everybody else, I'm shocked. I haven't seen Razzano play in ages, and I couldn't believe how well she was staying in high-paced rallies with Serena from very start. Some really flashy shotmaking, some decent scrambling throughout, and her relentless pace in the rallies was a revelation to me. A couple of points here and there decided the 1st set, and had they gone her way she could have easily won this in 2.

As for Serena, up until 5-1 in tiebreak, she was playing rock-solid, controlled aggression. Not far off the type of tennis she's been playing in Madrid and Charleston. She was making few needless UEs, rallying well for her usual standards, serving decently, and then she got nervous. Started just whaling on the ball, hoping for a few cheap points to end the match when she getting visibly tighter. Mentally checked out of the match going into the 3rd, and only started playing again when she realised that she was going to get bagelled. She very well could have turned it around if she hadn't missed all those 2nd serve returns in the last game.

This draw had carnage written all over it, and I doubt we've seen the last shock in this 1st week.

She´s one of those players that always can produce a surprising result here and there and winning this match in those circunstances is amazing.
I was already starting to feel sad for her for not being able to close the match after leading 5-0 and suffering with pain. I was thinking she would end up losing it but somehow she hang in there.
Eva Asderaki was ridiculous and unfair by trying too much to show that she doesn´t have anything against Serena.

People incessantly repeated that Serena was the overwhelming favorite for RG because she won 2 tournaments that are not even true clay --

Har-Tru and super-fast Grass Madrid ? I mean come on, there's a moment people need to sit the freak down and have perspective. Serena is not a good clay-court player, she's bad, mediocre and suffered the worst defeat of her career on TRUE RED clay.

The Serena hype is really getting old, just move on already. She was a good player but she's 30 and all this is behind her back. Just relax and enjoy the real top player dominating the tour and stop trying to desperately make Serena happen, she's not happening. Yikes !

Absolutely I remember that discussion. And I'm not shocked at all by the loss. Serena has been verrrrry iffy in Majors lately, and I'm still suspect of her ground game, real clay bonafides, emotional management issues, and the quality of her game and health lately.

They even tried to throw Serena the match/numerous bones, with all the silly hindrance calls by the Umpire.

Hopefully, she'll pick herself up and be better the rest of the year? I don't have nothing against her, I think they just hype Rena too much lately, when it's clear to see she can't generate consistency through out a full season or at a major. When will they learn?

Better luck in Wimbledon (where I'm sure she'll be the favorite/co-favorite again). Nonetheless, it would be a better pick there, then here at RG. :) SMH.

:speakles:

What do the tennis experts who expected her to cruise through the field have to say now? We should know by now that this surface doesn't suit Serena, and makes her vulnerable. Still, it is always shocking seeing her lose at a GS, especially in the first round (!) against a girl ranked outside the top100.

Happy for Virginie though, she must be ecstatic. :D

Maria must be ecstatic too  She has the "favorite" tag all over her forehead now.

No comment for this travesty. Judges stole the match from Serena in that tiebreak point, disgusting, as much as the crowd is.

The fuck are you talking about? Serena stopped play because she thought the ball was out, and it wasn't. :weirdo:

I can't believe what I just saw: Serena in tears, Asderaki's hindrance calls, the crowd, the drama, Virginie's comeback in the TB, Serena's comeback in the third, the fighting... just wow. Most dramatic match in a long while. Thank you girls.

This.

An upset is an upset... but a record that's existed since the start of her GS career? True tragedy. I don't want to even use a crying gif... the situation is just too sad.

Full of drama, sensational match: Very very exciting.
Best match of this tournament so far. In terms of drama, best match of the whole year (men and women, even better than Stan-Seppi in Rome).

The hindrance calls
The tie break (5-1 for Serena)
The cramp of Razzano
8 matchpoints
3h 3 min.

Quality was up and down. Williams was ok in parts of 2nd set, in 3rd set really poor. Tactically enourmously bad. Razzano played very aggressive throughout the match. Serena was not able to keep to ball in play and let Razzano run. (a bit like Sanchez said, today in 3rd set it was really like that.)

Razzano's comments in before.
She is outside Top 100 and not in good shape.

Totally unpredictable, sensational day.

Although I'm not a fan of either of those players, I really think that (for the women's tennis and for the tournament) it would have been better when Serena could have come back and won this match in 3.
Razzano will lose to Rus or finally against Görges/Watson.
I can't see her in R4 again (like several years before.)

Williams was the favourite No.1 - although it is on red clay - she played very good in Madrid and Rome. Although her foot work was not perfect in all clay tournaments she was still by far the best player.
Nobody can say that they predicted an early exit for her.

But IMO the Williams always have the most problems in early rounds.
I remember Venus had problems in Wimbledon against British players and I remember Serena had problems against Zakopalova in FO before (in R1 or R2.)

Razzano played with lots of heart, she showed aggressive tennis but we have to say that she choked the 1st set away with 1 double fault.
After that, noone thought that she will come back.
Although she beat S.Williams today I'm not sure if she would have won against a decent clay courter like Medina or Begu today.
She really profited from the great atmosphere.

In my opinion, Asderaki did a fantastic job.
The hindrance calls were correct because there were at least two screams without a point for the opponent. And then, in 3rd set, it was enough and Asderaki had to take her points away.
There was only one hindrance point (in early 3rd set) I haven't understood.

Yikes !

I'm sorry but you seem to be forgetting about this :

It's taken too long for this thread to get ugly, and no database error. This match deserves a peak thread.
Because, this was a devastating loss, yet not one of you are clever enough to really rile any of us up. This thread probably won't even be closed.
