Thanks for this Just Do It, but I started a Johanna Konta thread last year...unfortunately, she has decided to represent Great Britain so we deleted the thread...the ITF and WTA are yet to recognise her as a British citizen, but it's only a matter of time

Okay I understand that, but have to ask you and scottsue one more question, would you stop supporting Dokic if she would start representing other country ?

The difference between Dokic and Konta is i know nothing about Konta, whereas i have watched Dokic news and results for years. To answer that question though, i would lose ALOT of respect for Dokic for screwing Australia around the way she has (if she switched natio's). I wouldnt care as much about how her career turns out because she wouldnt be an Aussie and i wouldn't browse through all her forums finding out gossip because i wouldnt care moreover i wouldnt like her for using us and then wiping us away like a dirty arse.

^ So, the answer is no. And it shows you are not a real Jelena Dokic fan. All Australians stopped supporting Jelena when she switched to Serbia in 2001, and then started supporting her again in 2006, that is pretty lame. I am still her huge ( the biggest ) fan, even though she plays for Australia, and I do not have anything to do with Australia. It just shows I am a fan of Jelena Dokic, not of Australia, Serbia or whatever.

Anyway this discussion is completely unnecessary.

And the answer was not just "no", there was alot more to it than that and i explained how and why i would stop liking her because i would have something against her GIVING ME VERY GOOD REASON to reduce the support that i give her.

For now i love her to death, if she backstabbed my country i would dislike her and she would deserve every criticism Australians threw at her!

thats how most australians would feel... it doesnt make them less of a fan... its simply that we were screwed over before when she left and if she were to do it again of course aussies are going to lose a bit of respect and interest in her... its what happens:shrug:

if molik, stosur or dellacqua switched natio's i wouldnt follow them as much as before. but probably the same amount as i support like ivanovic and jankovic now...

Have to say that I agree with Harvs and Dan ... when Dokic left before I no longer supported her. When she came back, as an Australian she instantly had my support. If she walks again, she will instantly drop off my radar.

You have to remember that it is about more than being a fan of a player ... it is about supporting your nation. Many Australians feel Jelena did screw us over when she received so much support.

The way I see it there are two Jelena's. There's Jelena the tennis player, and Jelena the Australian.

As a tennis player, she definately floats my boat. I will always be a fan of hers for her game, fantastic off the ground with punishing groundies, and that well disguised, oh-so-delicate backhand dropshot. For her game, I will always be a fan.

As an Australian however, you could understand skeptical Australian fans. The first time she left Australia, I know I was disappointed, but I also knew that her father had played a large role in that decision - she was still a kid. However, it's well known that alot of money was spent on Jelena's development, and to leave over one bad draw was really ludicrous, and what made it worse was that she refused to return to Australia to play at all, which would have also let down many Australian fans.

Then in 2006, she'd seperated herself from her father, and wanted to be Australian again - which to me showed her love for this country, and the gratitude she'd given her all the opportunities she'd recieved - AND WE WERE VERY GLAD TO WELCOME HER BACK! :) Tennis Australia was very supportive through WC's and facilities, and they were happy to see Jelena use them - but then she faded away again - and re-appeared in late 2007, to our delight.

I can understand TA being cautious with there assets this time, and I think Jelena was very lucky to get the opportunities that she got this time around in '08. The wildcards were again at her disposal and she used AUSTRALIAN Wildcards - meant for AUSTRALIAN players. If Jelena were to represent another nation again - to Australians - it would seem as though she just used our country as a way of getting going again.

If she did decide to represent Serbia again, the question for Jelena fans would be - What do you love more - Jelena Dokic, the tennis player or Australia, the country? If it were the latter, then you very well not be a Jelena fan anymore, as you've seen her actions as just using Australia to get a headstart and then leaving it behind her. That's my outlook anyway

 Completely forgot that this was a thread about Johanna Konta! In her case, I don't feel at all as though she 'used' Australia, because it appears as though she's spent a large amount of time in Britain, and has developed through there facilities.

While Dokic has used AUSTRALIAN Wildcards and AUSTRALIAN facilities quite happily, but that's OK as long as she remains Australians. Otherwise she will look like she's just been using Australia to get ahead, even though I'll still be a fan, and a huge one at that :p

Bump!
Johanna played at Roland Garros under the Australian flag, but lost in the first round. She then played at the Roehampton ITF Junior Championships, again as an Australian. Now at Junior Wimbledon, Konta is playing for Australia once more. Now surely, if the same rules applied to Konta as to Gajdosova and Rodionova, she would have elected to play for Great Britain...but she is listed as Australian. Amongst the juniors on the LTA site, Konta is not mentioned...

Maybe she and her family reached some sort of agreement like Andrew Thomas and his family

One things certain, let's hope we can hang on to her as she has obviously got talent :yeah:

I did a Google News Search of Johanna and found this:

Johanna Konta, born in Sydney to Hungarian parents, is soon to be given British citizenship having just turned 17 . When that happens, she is likely to become Britain's leading female junior.
The granddaughter of Attila Kertesz, who played in Hungary's football team of the Fifties that starred Ferenc Puskas, she has divided her time between London and Spain since the age of 13 and her Australian accent has almost disappeared.
She is now based at Roehampton's National Tennis Centre and explained: 'I'm only playing as Australian now under a technicality as my passport is coming through this year. I am definitely becoming British. There is no going back.'

__
I'll blame this on TA too, they wouldn't have offered her any sort of alternative to remain Australian...
Looks like we've lost a good prospect here

Some statistics from Johanna's match yesterday:
18 Unforced Errors
3 Double Faults
24 Winners
11 Aces
61% of first serves in
Winning percentage of 91% on first serve
Winning percentage of 45% on second serve
Break points won 3/6
Total Points won 67.

I figured, whilst she is still playing for Australia, I might as well keep posting in this thread...
Nice win, some very impressive statistics there too. 11 aces, looks like she has a great serve. Also, 24 winners seems like she is handy off the ground. She now plays 5th seed Polona Hercog, who is Jessica Moore's doubles partner. Hercog is going to be HUGE. Although she is a natural claycourter, she has easily gotten through to this stage, and I think she will be too much for Johanna. Whoever wins this match looks likely to crack the top 10 on the ITF Junior Rankings for the first time too...

GOOD LUCK :)

1st Round: defeated Jade WINDLEY (GBR) (Q/#873) 6-3 6-4
2nd Round: versus Irena PAVLOVIC (FRA) (3/#235)

This is the thread that some people couldn't find about Johanna.

Obviously she is still in limbo in regards to citizenship, ala Jarmila Groth and Anastasia Rodionova.

She recently made the final of a 25k in the UK, beating No.8 seed Marinne Giraud 3-6 6-2 6-3, No.1 seed Corinna Dentoni 6-3 3-6 6-2 and top 300 ranked Anna Floris 6-3 3-6 6-3 before losing in the final to third seed Katie O'Brien 3-6 6-2 6-4.

She is now back in the US, where she beat Christina McHale (American Australian Open WC recipient) 6-2 3-6 6-1 in the final round of qualifying for a 25k in Redding. In the first round of the main draw she faces Madison Brengle.

With her 25k final, Konta has soared up the rankings to No.497. She has been a bit lax about returning to Australia as she hasn't played any of the summer junior tournaments or travelled with any of the Brits down here to play in the 25k events...I wonder why??

Good luck vs. Brengle :)

I think so.
The LTA have given her several wildcards into British ITFs, but she has been seeking citizenship as long as Groth and Rodionova. She has played all of the Grand Slams as an Australian, despite surely having the same opportunity as Groth and Rodionova to switch allegiances. And in an article I read last year about lack of depth and some accusations made by Jason Stoltenberg, TA made no comment on Konta officially leaving Australia for the UK, which Stoltenberg did comment on. TA said something like ''her father moved there for work, and that's why she is based there.''

Have to disagree with you. I support any player that plays for Australia. However, that does not preclude me from supporting players from other countries. That is like saying that anyone who jumps on the bandwagon of the latest upcoming player is not a true supporter. There are so many people on this board who are only interested in the big name players, these players at the lower end of the totem pole need support and they are most likely going to find it among their countrymen. Personally I love it when an underdog does in a big name as I like to see the spoils shared.

See Konta won a $25k last week. Wish we knew what the deal was with her representation. As someone said earlier she does seem to have a fair bit of potential. It is odd that the Brits did leave her out of their Wimby calcs, as Oz still consider Rodders and Groth for opps in Oz even tho neither has citizenship.

Theyve given qual/maindraw w/c's to non-Brit players this year and in the past so the All England isn't against the idea of rewarding foreign talent - therefore you'd think they wouldn't be adverse to giving a w/c to a part-Brit anyway. Maybe she's changed her mind

lovethegame stated at the top of the page that Johanna has been training for the past year in Texas.

John Newcombe owns a tennis academy in Texas, so I am (perhaps unwisely) assuming that she is training at his ranch.

Nothing was said or done by John Newcombe at Wimbledon, but maybe he didn't want to see an Aussie talent go to waste and offered her a spot over in Texas. It certainly explains why she has played the vast majority of her tennis in North America this year.

It would be a good sign if she came out to play the Aussie challengers after the US Open, too.

Surely if she was playing for the UK she'd be getting some assistance in the next month or so with w/c's into quallies or even the maindraw of Wimbledon/WTA events (worse players have received more!). We should have an indication soon.

^ True. But on the flipside, she has never ever been in consideration for any Aussie WCs either. I don't think she's even set foot in this country for a number of years. I know she has AUS next to her name, but to me that's just a technicality. I don't consider her an Aussie player at all.

As I said in the GM thread on her:

She's taking a while with the paperwork...

In a Times article from July 2008 by Neil Harman titled 'Is Laura Robson's passport ethically right?', Konta was quoted as saying: "I'm only playing as [an] Australian now under a technicality as my passport is coming through this year."

I see she last played a tournament in Britain sixteen months ago.

Fair enough, but she still appears on the TA rankings and I presume she is flying around the world on an Australian passport, despite not playing in an official Australian team since 2004/5.

Agree, I think it hasn't been a priority to make the change as yet. As she trains in the US, she may opt for a US passport.

If she continues to rise up the ranks and the lure of Fed Cup and more importantly Olympics beckons, she make her mind up pretty quickly.... if she hasn't done so already.

In this video, filmed last month, Konta states that she lives in London:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0wuYM-sHM8

An attachment to a foreign tennis academy would not necessarily be considered to determine her usual place of residence, any more than attending a university changes someone's usual place of residence, which is conventionally considered to remain their parents' house, at least that is the way these things are viewed in the UK, which is what is relevant. Andy Murray trained in California for a time, and Laura Robson is attached to an academy in Paris, but I'm sure both of them would regard the UK as their normal place of residence.

JK needs to have lived in the UK for four years before she can apply for British citizenship, in line with the usual rules here in the UK. My understanding is that her four years are up in August. Thus the delay is not only predictable, but mandatory. Under the standard conditions, the applicant must not spend more than 90 days a year outside the UK during the four year term. I trust that this will be waived for a tennis player (though immigration officials can be pretty dense at times).

Laura Robson is a minor, so she automatically acquired the citizenship of her father, who applied for UK citizenship at a time when he met the four year rule.

Konta in cash row as Sutton Tennis Academy chase almost £3,000 from father (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2152425/Konta-cash-row-Sutton-Tennis-Academy-chase-3-000-father.html)

The newest recruit to the ranks of British tennis is at the centre of a financial row, with her father the subject of a county court judgment for non-payment of fees to one of the country’s top academies.

Gabor Konta, whose Australian-born daughter Johanna, 21, became British No 6 when she switched nationality on Tuesday, is being chased for money by the Sutton Tennis Academy in Surrey.

She trained there for 11 months four years ago. Owner Keith Soll became so frustrated with the family failing to pay that he obtained a judgment against Gabor Konta for almost £3,000.

But attempts by bailiffs to recover the money have been hampered by their inability to find the family, who are believed to be based in Eastbourne.

‘We have been chasing the money and would like to recover it as we are a commercial operation that needs to make ends meet,’ said Soll.

‘We have no issue with Johanna herself, who is a nice girl and very promising player. We wish her every success but would just like what is owed.’

The LTA, who appear to have shown remarkably little solidarity with one of the UK’s top independent centres, are unlikely to intervene.

‘We continue to support Johanna and Sutton Tennis Academy but this is a matter between Sutton and Gabor Konta,’ said a spokesperson.

Is it because she only wanted to play on grass while representing GBR?

I wonder if she will try and attempt AO qualies.

I spotted Johanna a year ago for the first time in videos and stuff, and thought she had a pretty damn good technique, so I've been supporting her ever since then. I definitely think she has future if she fixes a couple of things of her game, and the last time I thought someone had future was Sam Stosur back in 2008 ;)

But this is a hard match for JoKo.

You're not kidding - great fighting performance and so gutted that she didn't get McHale under pressure at 7-6 after breaking her serve the last two. Still she's shown loads of potential here. Just gutted they've gone off at 7-7 as I think McHale will be stronger tomorrow.

Well done Johanna - you are going in the sig......

I guess Konta and Broady get ignored a little in favour of the top 4 GB women...

On BBC Sport - Wimbledon 2012 day two Live - Johanna Konta was first mentioned in an apology at the beginning of the day that she had mistakenly been included in a list of British players who had lost in the first round, and the next time was to mention that a New York Times correspondent had reported that Christina McHale was serving for the match at 9-8. I am baffled by the lack of reporting about this exciting match on the part of the BBC. They would have had thousands of Brits glued to the text if they had reported on the eighteenth game point by point, and the seventeenth game had several deuces.

Yes, me too. Really exciting match and Johanna should have endeared herself to the British fans with this battling performance. She had game points on her serve at 8-8, and break points at 8-9. If she'd taken the 17th game I really think she would have gone on to win.

I will definitely be following her now and hope she can get closer to the top 100 now. Good luck Johanna

USO QR1: JoKo defeated Chang in straight sets.
Chang was the seeded player there so great to see Johanna knock her out and open the draw up really widely.

She now plays Nara for a chance in the Final Round of Qualifying, Nara's form has been terrible last couple of months so a REALLY great chance for JoKo to try and get her MD spot there.
