Welcome to Barcelona, Spain! After a few South American red clay events in the spring and a North American green day event last week, the 2012 red clay season will finally truly kick off in this exciting Spanish city. Leading the charge this week will be the powerful Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci who have steadily been picking up titles and ascending the rankings in the past few seasons to establish themselves as a force that will be extremely tough to touch this week. However, the second seeds, Spaniards Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja may have less to speak for in terms of accomplishment but they are no slouches either and should the final align these two tandmens, it will surely provide plenty of excitement. Many new pairings will make their debuts this week as well, such as Belorussian Olga Govortsova and Czech Vladimíra Uhlířová (the third seeds), Israeli Shahar Peer and Argentine Paola Suárez (unseeded), and Czech duo Petra Cetkovská and Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová, the later of whom is a defending champion at this event (unseeded as well), while Italian veterans, Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone, who just began their partnership this year, (also unseeded) will surely be a team to watch this week. With some more experienced teams in action as well as many new surprises waiting to happen, the clay season is kicking off in style in the very stylish backdrop of Barcelona. Vote now as the Barcelona Ladies Open commences!!!
