92 "guests" this sub-forum really is the most popular with the lurkers.

That's why I registered. :D I was stalking this subforum (Claypova thread) for updates on the Rome final. Wondered why it disappeared in the "Live Scores" feed on the WTA/Rome websites, no news, nothing.

Sharapova would reach #1 if she wins Roland Garros, and Azarenka loses in the semifinals.
If Azarenka loses by the fourth round, Sharapova would reach #1 with a final at Roland Garros

I made this post in GM but thought I would share it here, too, just because I think it's kind of funny.

Some men are tagged as weenies because they felt court conditions at Madrid put them at risk of serious injury. One of them carrying an ongoing niggle in his knee. But they played the tournament until beaten as expected.

The name caller gave an unexpected WalkOver at the SemiFinal stage in Rome because she had a niggle in her back that could possibly develop into an issue if she didn't retire immediately. So what is that?

Weenie Envy?

or

UpStaging The Weenies?

or

Weenie Warfare?

or

Weenie Flip Flop?

or

Weenie Fail?

or

Weenie Whacked?

or

Weenie Wonders?

or

Wicked World Of Weenies?

or

Weenie Woman?

It just seems right that if Weenie is now part of TF GM jargon for men, then there should be a corresponding term for women. I prefer Weenie Woman with Weenie Envy in second and Weenie Warfare in third. Perhaps all three depending on context and grammar.

Tough year wasn't it? Those chokes against Henin, Serena and Clijsters :sobbing: It all culminated in that loss against Greta Arn in Auckland. I was never as close as giving up on Maria as during that Australian swing. I remember I was on vacation in New York and was getting drunk with some friends at a bar and they were airing the Maria-Goerges match and I decided I'd give her another chance (thank god I was flying while she was getting thumped by Petkovic two days later :spit:)

That match against Vorackova or whatever in Auckland has to be the most dreadful thing I've ever witnessed in tennis.

Her main rival is also in the best form for a long long period .

Serena and Azarenka are in good forms but Clijsters and Kvitova aren't.

On paper, current period isn't as tough as 2004 -2008 when Maria had to deal with Henin, Serena, Venus, Clijsters, Davenport and Mauresmo. Additionally, there were Safina, Ivanovic, Jankovic, Kuznetsova and Dementieva.

I do want a tough draw for Maria. The tougher the better for her. She already knows that she can beat every player out there except maybe Serena as she proved it in her two tournament wins this year so she needs to get into a successful start that's why I would like to see her face Venus in the early rounds :yeah:.

The one potential early opponent who's giving me terrifying thoughts is Kuznetsova, who she could meet as early as the 3RD ROUND :crying2: Everyone's overlooking her atm - understandable because she's been particularly shit even for her recent standards lately, but she ALWAYS steps it up for the Slams - she's only lost before the 3rd round at a Slam once throughout her entire slump, and of course she's well capable of suddenly producing GOAT play at RG in particular (even last year she made a run to the QFs out of nowhere despite having a shitty lead-up similar to this year).

dsanders06
May 21st, 2012, 07:52 PM

Comparing Maria's seasons in 2009 and 2010 really does illustrate just how important the mind is in this sport. The tennis she produced between May and August in 2010 was farandaway better than anything she produced at any point in 2009, yet despite that she somehow managed to finish 2010 ranked 4 places lower than a year where she missed the first third of the season :spit: primarily because 2010 was the most headcasey period her career, whereas in 2009 she could always be relied onto fight like a trojan even when she was playing abysmally (most of the time at that point).

Charlatan
May 21st, 2012, 08:24 PM
Aside from Kuznetsova, is there any chance maria can meet Petrova? Of course, Nadia is practically her bitch, but she can bring her serve and peak form when matters, especially on clay

The other potentially tricky opponents would be Barthel, Cibulkova (she always gives maria nightmares on clay :scared:), Pennetta (:help:), Safarova, Kanepi, Goerges. Although half of these mugs are in slump, they always bring on their match-of-their-life form when facing Maria :(

vozas
May 21st, 2012, 08:40 PM
Aside from Kuznetsova, is there any chance maria can meet Petrova?

Yep, she's in the same 25-32 range as Kuznetsova. Maria can meet any of the following in the 3rd round

[25]Cetkovska
[26]Goerges
[27]Kuznetsova
[28]Petrova
[29]Peng
[30]Medina
[31]Barthel
[32]Zheng

Maria playing Russian's has always been a huge relief to me tbh. All of them are her bitches, or one win away from being her bitches I think  she just LOVES beating them

Kuznetsova is great on clay. She'd probably take a set against Maria but fold like a cheap Decathlon tent the moment she realizes who's on the other side of the net. Maria can be VERY intimidating, especially when you start thinking of some of her stats and comebacks, especially the 3rd-set GOAT status :worship: Sexlana would not be able to keep up with Maria's fight.

I'd like her to draw Barthel or Petrova. Big servers so she gets to practice her return before meeting the GOAT server in the later stages of the tournament

By the way, for the 4th round she'll meet one of the following

[13]Ivanovic
[14]Schiavone
[15]Cibulkova
[16]Kirilenko

I want Ivanovic :inlove: please no Kirilenko :sobbing: I hate that match-up

Charlatan
May 21st, 2012, 08:49 PM
oh thanks....barthel, kuzzy, nadia, julia, peng are all in the 25-32 range

she might probably draw Goerges in R3 and Cibulkova in R4 :sobbing:

about Kirilenko, it's the best if maria doesn't have to play her ever again...sharapova plays like serena is at the other side of the court while playing kirilenko

I wouldn't worry too much about Serena for now. There are so many talented players to go through before she gets to Maria. Who knows? R1 Scrub
R2 V Williams
R3 M Barthel/N Petrova
R4 A Ivanovic
QF S Stosur
SF N Li (Revengepova :armed:)
F V Azarenka

I don't believe she'll beat Serena ever again, especially not in a slam, so I really hope she has the toughest of draws but doesn't have to face her master :sobbing:

If she completes a career slam with that draw it'd be one of the most satisfying wins of her career, right up there with the 2008 AO.

people are pretty harsh and dismissive when it comes to Rena's runs at RG. They always say she hasn't made SF since 03 yada yada yada but nobody takes into account that had she beaten peak Kuznetsova at RG09, and peak Stosur at RG10 (both of which were tight matches), she probably would've won a second RG already.

with the competition she has these days, I'm not counting her out for a title at all.

Yes but I only started following tennis a year ago so I don't know much about her run.I just think she is not a serious contender. It;s not like I don't know she plays better than anybody on tour but I always seem to forget she is a threat

are you aware of that statistic how hard it is to win a slam for 30+ aged players? As far as I'm aware, only Navratilova managed to break this rule in recent times and she was superfit and a late bloomer too...when you reach certain age, injuries and all the wear and tear become a bitch

Well, Serena is not exactly whoring up appearances lately  Besides her recent injuries - allthough lenghty in time - we not THAT serious to threaten her career. The infamous foot and another was basically an illness rather then injury. Serena still gives a damn about the GS and 99,9 % of the tour are dwarfed by her presence. Serena can go on until she's 33-34 and still be among top GS contenders IMO.

Never did get to post my excitement after Sunday... what a day that was! The rain delay before the tiebreak completely screwed me up, as it pushed the tiebreak out of the timeframe that I had recorded. So... I had to wait several hours for Tennis Channel to replay the match, then wait a couple more hours for them to get to the tiebreak. It was definitely worth the wait, though... Maria just keeps on rolling along. :)

For those of you that live here in America like I do, June 9 could be a huge day on NBC. In the morning, Maria could complete a career grand slam... and in the evening, I'll Have Another could be the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years. Also after that, the Stanley Cup could be won if the series ends in five games. NBC's got a big day of sports that day... I can't wait!

I am heartened by the fact that one part timer, Kim, is leaving after the USO. Maybe she will last for one final Glory Hunt at the Olympics but who knows, she injures herself all the time because she really isn't fit/flexible/hardened enough to play.

Unless Venus does really well in the four biggies coming up, I think she will go too and concentrate on her fashions and activist roles. At Rome, I thought she was better dressed, and looked very nice, than at any time in her career. I assume it was her own creation.

The last Part Timer really doesn't have anything else to do. As long as she can beat Pova she will stay on tour, I think.

All I know is Maria beat everyone, from has-beens to up-and-comers to #1s, clay-specialists and all 4 slam holders this clay season... except for Serena Williams. She must be VERY confident, and the simple fact that, unlike last year where she was the clear frontrunner and there was no Serena thus all pressures were on Maria, this time around she knows there's a player who will most likely win the whole thing if she gives two shits.

Maria will be much more relaxed than last year until she meets Serena. She played all sorts of matches this year on clay (brilliant performances like the final against Victoria, epic, memorable matches like the one against Stosur and grinding shitfests like the Rome final). Hopefully we'll see her swinging away freely and loving to do those slides to the BH :inlove:(to me the biggest improvement, by a large margin, in her 2nd career)

This and the Wimbledon swing is truly my favorite time of the tennis season. I just feel like there's so much more tradition/memories (both good and bad) compared to the Australian and US Open season. Also, it helps that school is almost over and I can sink myself into tennis all day and night. The time zone (when I was back at home in Asia) was always perfect as well (I guess not here in NY but I'll be heading home in two weeks :D ). I hope she does well this year! It's such a great season so hope it doesn't end too quickly. I don't want to have expectations but I can't help it--I have pretty good expectations vs anyone except Serena so hopefully she's way on the other side. Some never learn I should say.

There are plenty of fans that take it one match at a time as well, and that don't turn into whining idiots if Maria loses.
She's looking really good going into this year's Roland Garros, but we never know if she will have one of those horrible matches in there somewhere. Her last two Slam finals have been pretty bad, and her nemesis Serena is also in the draw.

One match at a time, that's how I always take it.

Nervous/excited for the draw tomorrow! There are people I would prefer her to avoid but i'm ready for whatever draw she'll get. Do think it would be better for her to get a tough draw as in the past, when she's had an easy draw, it hasn't done her any good later on in the tournament.

Even though I'm excited for this French Open, I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, as last year, I got my hopes and thought she was gonna win it so when she lost in the semis, I was gutted.

So like others have said, I'm just taking it one match at a time and hopefully it'll go our way this year.

nice draw as far as I'm concerned - Williams won't reach QF anyway with Julia Goerges, Hradecka and Pushniacki in her section. Then Maria gets some useless scrubs to slay before honing her game before QF stage starts...Bring it on:cheer:

R1 Masha vs A. Candantu

R2 Masha vs P. Hercog or A Morita

R3 Masha vs M. Erakovic or L Dominguez Lino - S. Peng or T. Pazek

R4 Masha vs M. Kirilenko or V Larriere - K Zakopalova or L. Tsurenko - A. Keothavong or L. Tsurenko

what if serena loose before the quaters ; this is red clay it's ain't blue or whatever ; the condintion are diffrerent at the french open and somehow serena just can't pass the QF here ; and maria already drew her in the AO and look at what happened may be this time masha will win the whole thing :) i believe in maria till the end it's not because some chick who won against her 8 times in a row is on her ^part of the draw that this is the end of the world :( i hope some mug will beat her before the quaters ; cause serena have a talent at loosing in RG in the early rounds :) so lets be all positive

The draw is horrible. It's not just that Serena will be waiting in the QFs; the lead-up is full of scrubs and has beens. Maria will barely get any match practice from all those washed up mugs. That's why I wished she had gotten Petrova or Ivanovic or Kuznetsova, just to get herself pumped up from those victories. I mean, Zakopalova? Peng? Morita? Czink? So depressing.

Yeah. I'm not saying that I expect Maria to beat Serena should they both get there...But I think her chances are a lot higher at RG than anywhere else, especially in the QF where Serena seems to have a mental block.

Anyway, one match at a time. I can't wait for this. My favorite slam

I don't think Serena is a lock for the quarters. Her draw to get there is more difficult than Maria's.
Of course Serena might as well beat these people with ease and she probably will but even Caro could trouble her. This is red clay and the French Open.
If there's a place Serena is very beatable this is RG.
If they both get at the qfinals I think Maria has a good chance. That is all.

The draw still sucks though.

it would be amazing if Maria managed a win over serena, even if she didn't take the title afterwards. Serena is the only player out there that Masha just can't seem to handle and i think a win over her in a grand slam could shift the dynamic. But we will see how things unfold

vozas
May 25th, 2012, 11:12 AM
Out of Serena's section I actually give Kanepi the greatest shot at beating her. She has a FO QF from a few years ago and serves and hits big. She'll probably have that vague, empty look in her eyes like she always does and just swing away. Who knows?

Maria Croft

BTW - I see that Arantxa Rus (NED) - the Kim Clijster slayer in last year's French Open - could play Serena in R2 - Maybe she can repeat her achievement for the second time? -

Arantxa Rus (NED)

Since I'm dutch myself - It's nice to see that 2 dutch women have entered the main draw (so far) - #71 Michaela Krajeck and #97 Arantxa Rus (NED) - Another dutch - #89 Kiki Bertens (NED) is still battling to qualify

May God have mercy on our souls. This is just...horrifying. But it's red clay and serenas worst slam so who knows who will be In that quarter final. Bright side: Radwanska may get bitched out in the second round by Venus. That is comforting

Tennisvampire
May 25th, 2012, 11:39 AM
God, why does she always end up with Serena in her quarter of a draw??? First Australian Open (although we know how Serena chose to deal with that one :oh:), then Madrid, and now RG. God, I really hope that Masha can beat her for the first time since God knows when (and yes, I do know the last time was 2004)... I just have a really big problem with Serena playing Maria. I can't deny Williams is an awesome player, one of the best the game ever had, but I just tremendously dislike her personality and her attitude on the court. It's like, I'm Serena Williams, so I can do anything I want, losers. And when she plays Maria, she doesn't just play her usual great, but beatable tennis. She plays like a freakin' GOAT EVERY SINGLE TIME, and that's what bothers me the most, the fact that I know she will bring on an amazing performance no matter what, if she gets that far as to playing Maria... Other than her, Maria has a pretty decent draw... All I can say right now is good luck Maria. Slay them all :D

Maria Croft
May 25th, 2012, 12:20 PM
I thought a little about the draw, and so here’s my honest opinion on it.

Well, first of all, she needs to make the QF’s, then she will most likely face Serena. The chances of beating her are slim at best. You could only argue that Serena is more vulnerable in a QF than in a SF or Final, and that they have never played on red clay before, but those are just stats waiting to be changed.

Even if by some miracle she would pass Serena, she can still face many dangerous opponents. I would expect her to put too much pressure on herself, and somehow lose it anyway.

So looking at it like that, I have a different goal for Maria this Roland Garros. That would be to lose because her opponent was simply better. I don’t want her to lose another Slam match because of another flat performance, because her serve didn’t click, her return was absent, she puts too much pressure on herself, and least of all, injuries. If she can manage that, the tournament would be a massive success no matter the outcome.

I realise I sound a little pessimistic, and none of this might matter if she doesn’t get far, but these are just my two cents, take it as you will.

I think some are hanging the black crepe before there is a body. The last time Pova played Serenka, Pova was frozen in place for the entire first set. The only time I saw her feet move was on her serve and then she stood there like a marble statue, a beautiful statue, of course, but marble statues are notoriously poor tennis players, even worse than pillars of salt. The second set was modestly better, she shuffled around a bit and, on at least two occassions, made a full swing at the ball.

I think Hogg will have her better prepared to go at it from the first point. If she can't beat Serenka, she can't have the Career Slam. Serenka will be here for the next two or three years to prevent it. So, if the match happens, Pova has to step up and play to win.
