Your favourite set ever?

You know... when they ask you what's your favourite match ever the match obviously has to be good from the beginning to the end, so you can't say matches in which they have an excellent set of tennis and the other is one-sided or a shitfest or whatever. My favourite set was the 2nd set in the 2006 Australian Open 4th round clash between Martina Hingis and Samantha Stosur, Hingis eventually won the set 7-6(10-8) and the match by 6-1 7-6(8), they both were a bit inconsistent in that set with their serve but overall the quality was amazing.

Sharapova vs Justine AO 08. Pova's level was insane but Justine broke Maria when she was serving for the set to go *4-5. The instensity of the last game that Maria eventually won was amazing.

I remember it being pretty tense, though it was probably not as good as I remember :lol:

Some of my favorites for Serena have been against Azarenka. 1st set of their 2009 Wimbledon QF (especially the final 3 points :drool::drool:), the final set of their 2010 AO QF, and the 1st set of their USO match last year. Serena's ballstriking was incredibly crisp in all of those sets.

Others that stand out:

Seleš - Davenport, WTA Championship (can't remember which one)... They were barely standing, but still managed to make some :drool: points. Amazing tennis. And today I'm watching the ball get pushed around :rolleyes: or getting smashed in the stands by Li :oh:

The second set of Venus/Pierce in 2005 had all of the components of a great set. Superb shotmaking from both players, a great atmosphere with the crowd getting behind both of them and a dramatic tiebreak with Venus saving two (or three?) set-points. Great stuff.

The first one that came to mind was Mary Pierce v Venus Williams Wimbledon 2005 second set. That was power tennis at its best.

It's not my favourite set ever but the first set of Serena-Maria Wimbledon 2010 was very tense and atmospheric. Really great serving by both girls, instead of the usual constant breaks and df's that we're used to seeing in the WTA.

I agree with a lot of what has already been said, but in the last few years this one stands out. People love to build up Serena-Maria as the 'clash of the titans', and for once the tennis (in the first set) matched that.

2010 Wimbledon 4R: Kvitova df. Wozniacki 6-2 6-0

I forget where it was, but Ana vs Patty. Ana was THIS close to getting the Golden Set. I think she only lost 3 points on serve.

I think what we can all take away from this thread is that Wimbledon 2005 was THE BEST TOURNAMENT OF ALL TIME END OF STORY BITCHEZZZZZZZ kthxbai

I agree that the 2nd set of the Venus vs. Pierce match from Wimbledon 05 was brilliant. Great atmosphere (for Wimbledon), and great shotmaking from both, particularly Pierce.

I'd go asfar as saying that Wimbledon 05 was the WTA's peak in terms of quality. Awesome matches every round.
