View Full Version : Top 10 Ranking Breakdown (after P700 Stuttgart)

There are ongoing discussions if WTA’s ranking system does reflect players overall performances. As I am under the impression that these discussions are not always results driven, I created four tables for your conveniences:

Table 1 summarizes seeding # and tournament results, table 2 sum total ranking points to tournaments tiers, table 3 shows Top 10 wins during current 52 weeks period and table 4 breaks down results of tournaments of choice in current ranking.

Azarenka and Kvitova are the real slayers here, snatching so many wigs.

Stosur's name isn't bolded.

Aga defeated Petkovic when she was top 10.and in Sydney this year too.

And apparently she's a vulture beating only low-ranked players. :tape:

Where's Sam's wins? She got like 7 top five wins last year.

and in Sydney this year too.

And apparently she's a vulture beating only low-ranked players. :tape:

Does that mean she had ten Top-10 wins within the last year?

Azarenka (YEC, Wimbledon, Madrid), Sharapova (Tokyo & Wimbledon), Radwanska (YEC, Eastbourne), Stosur (YEC), Wozniacki (YEC), Li (Madrid), Zvonareva (YEC, Madrid)

I would also add the wins over Wozniacki (the then #1) and Bartoli (#9) at the ITF World Mixed Team Championships (Hopman Cup) in January. Although they have no impact on the WTA rankings, they are hard-fought, well-deserved wins.

Just a quick look, and there were some wrong stats. Radwanska did not beat Li at the YEC and Rome. I don't think she beat Li in Cincin and Toronto as well ( They were seeded and did Li lost in first rounds?).

Are you only counting wins over the current top 10?
Yes, as written in headline of table 3 and mentioned by NA-MUG in post # 15: IMO eg a win against then Top 10 Serena Williams at GS US Open or then Top 6 Agnieszka Radwanska at P5 Toronto is more significant than those against outgoing Top 10s.
Aga defeated Petkovic when she was top 10.
Thatís correct. However, as table 3 includes wins against current Top 10 players and at present Andrea Petkovic is not ranked within Top 10, success at P Sydney 2012 is not mentioned as eg those wins of Miss Sunshine against Francesca Schiavone (P Brussels 2011) and Jelena Jankovic (P5 Rome 2011).
Where's Sam's wins? She got like 7 top five wins last year.
[Ö] is it just me or you wrote Aga beat herself? [Ö]
Sorry for the confusion! I missed bolding Stosur and didn't open a new line but I didnít miss Samís ten Top 10 wins.
Not sure what the point of this thread is [...]
From opener: There are ongoing discussions if WTAís ranking system does reflect players overall performances. As I am under the impression that these discussions are not always results driven, I created four tables for your conveniences.
I would also add the wins over Wozniacki (the then #1) and Bartoli (#9) at the ITF World Mixed Team Championships (Hopman Cup) in January.
I donít: It goes without saying that Hyundai Hopman Cup is an official team competition of the ITF (http://www.itftennis.com/about/itf-events/hopman-cup/overview.aspx) by invitation only (http://hopmancup.com/Teams-Schedule/Team-Lists.html).

But as Hyundai Hopman Cup is neither part of the WTA nor ITF Womenís Circuit and is not recognized on the WTA or ITF Womenís calendar (http://www.itftennis.com/itf/web/data/procircuit/2012%20Womens%20Calendar.pdf)s, every WTA player needs a waiver from CEO Stacy McAllister to compete in Perth, otherwise she will be fined (eg $ 100 grand for Top 3).

Don't forget Maria's win over Radwanska at Roland Garros.
Thanks for the heads up!

If wins are counted over as long a period of time as one year, then it seems more appropriate to count wins against those players who were Top 10 when they were beaten.

weird...

should be over players that were in top 10 at the time when the match was played
