View Full Version : Who is going to be Queen of Clay 2012?

StephenUK
Apr 1st, 2012, 01:47 PM
Who is going to dominate clay in 2012?

Will there be a domination of one or two players or will it be pretty random as in recent years?

Can Vika, Aga and Maria maintain their 2012 primacy or will someone else steal the limelight?

Will someone new take advantage of the lack of clay talent at the top and shake the world order of tennis?

Will past clay stars like Jankovic, Kuznetsova or Ivanovic revive their careers on this surface? Can Stosur, Goerges, Schiavone or Li Na maintain their good form of recent times?

Stosur if she can keep her head on. Her clay game can beat anyone on the tour, and I believe it's good enough to dispose of her 6ft blonde nemesi. She needs to believe it herself.

Nobody. I suspect they will share honours out between them, much as they did last year.

Even if one of them does have a good run, it takes more than one good season season to be called a Queen of Clay.

Given that Serena has not won a tournament on red clay since 2002, I think she may need the aid of a time machine to regain her long lost crown!

I voted for Sam, she is due for her good run of the year.
Maria, Ana, and Vika will also be factors.
Will be interesting to see what will happen with Petra, Serena, Kim, and Venus.
How amazing would it be to see Venus win RG?
Aga and Caro could win a title but I can't see either winning RG, too slow for them to get past power player after power player. If Aga remains patient and steps it up when she needs too, maybe...

I think the real top 3 will dominate the clay season. I definitely see Maria winning a clay court title and going deep at the French. The same with Kvitova and Azarenka. A final between Kvitova and Sharapova at the French wouldn't hurt .

I'm really excited about Madrid though :cheer:, blue is my favorite color, and I think it will be refreshing to see some matches played on blue clay :cheer:.

The big events maybe a williams, maybe stosur, maybe masha they are all contenders maybe martinez sanchez if shes fit she won rome do not forget, I wish patty schynder still played I miss her hair she beat serena in rome once so anything is possible.

Yes but she has not won a tournament on red clay in TEN YEARS!!!!

I would have put her on the list if there had been options for another 5 or 6 players, I also left out Kuznetsova, Jankovic and Clijsters, there wasn't enough space for everyone, I thought I should prioritise recent slam winners, recent form players and recent red clay champions as a priority over someone who won on red clay in the era of Tony Blair and Jacques Chirac!

Think it will be fairly even. Petra, Azarenka ands few other randoms to snag the titles.

Li could make a resurgence as well as Fran. Sammy will probably go deep in a few but fail to win. Maria will be consistent despite her awful level of play. Just not sure how radwanska will go.

Maria, Azarenka, and Kvitova are really the 3 best players on tour, and they all have their own motivations to do really well on clay as well as the game to pull it off. I think each could grab a warm up title, and I can definitely see all 3 of them in the SF of Paris.

Cibulkova, Serena, Stosur, Bartoli will be upset specialists, but I really don't know if they'll be winning tournaments.

Clay is always the most interesting part of the season because nearly all top players are best on hardcourts.
On clay, the drama, the open fields, the total mess is nearly for sure...

I think Suarez Navarro, Vinci, Errani and Oprandi can do a lot if they aren't injured.
Stosur and Na Li will play better than on hardcourt.
Kvitova is the favourite for Madrid and the French Open.
Sharapova and Azarenka are not bad on clay,
Wozniacki and Radwanska still can improve their clay game.
Ivanovic and the Germans will have a good clay court season.

I don't expect anything from Vera, Jankovic and Fran.

Bartoli will be solid and can surprise...

Ana Ivanovic is only former RG champion which shows some kind of good shape in opening quarter of the season, and Na Li is also very solid, but she is player with just one amazing claycourt season so far and hers shape is not close to 2011. Schiavone, Kuznetsova and Serena in start of 2012 is in big troubles, so best chances of all former GS champions right now I will give to Ivanovic, which playing last 8 months around TOP10 level on hardcourts, and red clay much more suits to hers game and doubtful defensive skils.

Talking about former RG finalists or claycourt specialists, Stosur have great run only in Doha, Jankovic not achieve nothing really good so far, and Clijsters and Venus due health problems will probably just use clay season for warm-up for 2012 Wimbledon-OG-USO hot summer. Sharapova never been RG finalist or clay specialist, but she is multiple semifinalist and deserve to be mentioned in this group of players. I don't see her winning RG, but I will not be surprised if she once again reach GS final (careers first on clay) because she is in best shape out of WTA big names.

In last two seasons RG title won players which never before reached SF round, and this season there is several serious contenders to repeat that achievement. But I'm not sure that Azarenka, Radwanska, Kvitova or Wozniacki is ready to produce similar level of theirs HC game on red clay. Actually from Wozniacki 2009-2011 case we know that constant amazing results on hardcourts not garantee anything very good on red clay. In this group of players best chances I give to Kvitova (slightly ahead Azarenka).

So my prediction is that this season RG trophy goes to Eastern Europe, and just second time ever in RG history WTA champion will be 180+ tall girl (which means Ivanovic, Sharapova, Kvitova or Azarenka)!

I would have said Stosur possibly, but with Azarenka dominating in general now that will be almost impossible unless Victoria falls well off on the clay. Stosur was always her bitch, and with Azarenka more confident and better than ever that sure isnt going to change anywhere if they play head to head, even on clay. I do think Stosur can defintiely beat Sharapova on clay, despite their overall history, and what happened in their last meeting on clay. She also need not worry about her other poor matchups much this clay season- Venus, Clijsters. Would do well too avoid Kvitova to, but she can probably beat her on clay unless Petra is in killer form in which case Petra will win whatever tournament it is anyhow. I am not totally sure of Sam's form in general to begin with now, but I do think she is probably the best clay courter of a currently awful womens clay field.

If Sam can go deep and hopefully win the FCC this week she could go on to have another great clay season like 2010 and should be the player to beat at this year's RG. But if she has a poor start to the clay season like last year I fear she will continue to struggle a bit, especially against the likes of Vika. In that case it's wide open, with almost everybody on the poll having a chance, and a few others as well, including Serena of course. Whatever the case, we're not likely to crown a queen of clay a la Henin purely on the basis of this season's results.

Ana, if she continues to play anything like she did in Indian Wells, Miami, and the Australian Open, could become a factor. Queen of clay, not so much (she's not ready yet). She may go on a 2007-like run though which should (in theory) only boost her confidence.

I'm going to put money on Stosur this time around.

I think I'll be unoriginal and go with Sharapova as Queen of the Court for this year. Been too long since she's held that honor, no? She has been on a tear lately with her serves, and I think she'll fare well on any tennis court surface (http://www.decoturf.com) moving forward.

Renafans may either look idiotic after 2nd /3d round at RG :secret:

Frankly speaking, neither Serena, nor Masha, nor Vika are clay specilists , it's by far their worst surface , but still they are main favorites this season, because WTA is free from new talents to be competitive with a few stars

Nevetheless, they are still vulnerable for any fit "born on clay court" girl , playing best tennis in her life . Almost on every Slam tournament such girls appear to withdraw favorites and instantly disappear after it

Claypova > Hardcourtpova

And actually I'd say Clay is her best surface right now.

only because there are 0 (zero) WTA "Nadals" and "Kuertens" , we have a really competition of hard-courters this year on clay courts. Big-hitters are winning all clay trophies, and RG might not be an exemption

Kuznetsova is in bad form , Ivanovic is not a winning material, Schiavone became old the next day after she lost her second RG final, Henin retired, Safina injured ......
And no new Arantxa Sánchez to show "americans" how different is clay to hardcourts

Maria has become better on clay courts because she has become universal player, whereas such top players like Vika or Aga are just hardcourters (Maria reached Finals at Wimb and AO during the last year, thus it's still her best surfaces)
