Last point was the perfect microcosm for the whole match. Aga refused to give Maria pace, except on her own terms, when she was certain it would put Maria off-balance.

Meanwhile, Maria was too uncertain of herself to execute the controlled aggression needed to even get a set. She was either wildly hoping a shot would go in or confusedly praying she could out-steady Radwanska.

Maria has turned into the "Nadal" of the WTA, suddenly forgetting how to win a damn final. Being brutally honest, Aggie didn't have to do much of anything. She wasn't all that spectacular. Maria plain and simple f**ked this up for herself with all the silly unforced errors.

This was the best match by Maria Sharapova serving-wise in a very long time. Radwanska had almost no chance against her consistent serving. Then again, apart from serving and RoS, Sharapova could do very little.

Radwanska hitting a lot of flatter than usual. I wasn't convinced at first, it resulted in some UEs into the net or long, but it exposed Sharapovas terribly bad footwork virtuously. Oh, and that so called coach Sharapova has ... does he get payed by Radwanska?

5 winners. Shameless pushing. Miami champion.

Double standards on this board, unsurprisingly. When La Borz does the same thing she gets slammed. Radwanska pushed all matched, rarely ventured to the net or went for her shots, and when she did has a poor percentage. Basically what peak Woz did. I guess the Radwanska pushing with chips instead of loops works better against flat hitters. That's the only difference.

Horrible for the game. Vulture era is in full swing.

Queen Vulture wouldn't have even gotten past the QF if Venus wasn't half-dead, as whenever Venus was actually giving it effort she was giving her a roasting.

The same ol' shit from her Queen Vulture. Deep puffballs, and insane scrabbling. Throwing back any sort of junk from insane defensive positions to draw the ugly error. I.e, an eye-sore.

How much more humiliation will Sharapova endure?

Well-deserved from Aga here. Played far better than the other rounds and as well as she could against this type of player. Her defense is so much better than PEEK Karolina's nowadays; in addition to being a much more natural mover/athlete than Woz and improving her anticipation over the last 7 months, she kept the ball so low whenever on the run and Martha couldn't finish so many rallies.

Embarrassing stuff from Crapova though. Appropriate nickname today.

Some of you are really annoying.
Will you say Kvitova, S.Williams, V.Williams, Sharapova and Li Na all play exactly the same just because they all hit a lot of winners? Will you? Just because Radwanska hits few winners doesn't mean she plays exactly like Wozniacki. Watched the match and you can see how much Sharapova struggled because Radwanska, while lacks in power, tried so hard to disrupt her rhythm.

But whatever makes you happy, haters.

I honestly don't get these people that say this was a shit match from pova. Honestly i'd say this was the best performance from her since Kvitova at the AO(and kvitova played very poorly may i add), maybe even all year. She's been massacred on her own serve all year, this was the first match where it wasn't like that. The serving was much better, but obviously in a match where it goes toe-to-toe she won't be more consistent then Radwanska. A few points made the difference in this match.

Besides that, i'd say this is the best radwanska we've seen so far. Just so clutch in 2012.

But well done, Agnieszka - pushing extraordinaire but then again, she didn't get broken once and was holding her own even while Maria was playing extremely well (up to the very end of the first set - I don't remember when was the last time Maria served that well). Also, even though she won this Woz-style (without the cheating part and being obnoxious part), I am somehow happy for Rad after all the uncalled for verbal abuse she got from both Sharapova and Azarenka this year.

I can't even hate on Aga for that effort. Making just 10 mistakes in a long 2 set match in the wind against the kind of power Maria has deserves some respect.

If Maria had made a few fewer errors, she would have won in straight sets though, like all their other matches. Onto the clay. Maybe she'll defend Rome. :spit:

It is the ranking system that got Caro to No. 1 without a major (like Jankovic and Safina). Radwanska was never capable of reaching a semi in a major six months ago - can't say that now especially with her new seeding.

I think it was a nice final to watch (from a neutral point of view, didn't root for anyone nor root against anyone).

One trying to defend incredibly hard, the other to find a hole in there. So the lack of winners from one side, and too many errors from the other side didn't really bother. (However I can imagine the frustration by MaSha and her fans for not taking chances when there were.)

Congrats to Agnieszka, and her fans:)

I'm not understanding why so many people are saying this was an "ugly" match. I didn't think so at all. Overall, it was very entertaining to watch! Both players were painting the lines frequently, and there were some great shots. Sharapova couldn't raise her game in the second set, but that had more to do with Aga's high level of play (and some luck). Congratulations to Aga on a great tournament!

I'm a fan of Andy Murray's game a lot too fore time but Radwanska is just totally off -- she's just a slightly more aggressive version of Wozniacki that's all. However this style of play only makes you win if your opponent has mental problems like Sharapova had today.
I wouldn't like to be winning with that kind of game, mostly doing nothing special just waiting for mistakes.
This doesn't look like GS winning game to me, but at least she has more potential than she showed in this final.

You know what? You might want to consider that stating that her game is boring like that is a fact is absurd. YOU FIND IT BORING. It's your OPINION (which many happen to share) I like watching well-constructed, points, great placement on serves, great shots hit on the run, knees being bent down to the court to fight off power, drop shots and clean winners that resulted from point construction as opposed to just hitting and hoping. For you to say she does not take initiative shows that you don't watch the match with my eyes for sure. MY OPINION IS THAT HER GAME IS INTERESTING and OLD SCHOOL and FUN (guess what! Many agree with me too) Standing in close to return serves, coming into net, hitting drop shots and changing the direction of hard-hit shots from Sharapova does equate to taking initiative. If you honestly believe that she just ran down all the balls and hit them soft up the middle until Maria missed, then you are mistaken. She got Maria on the run and pushed her back and chose the right moments when to step and accelerate her racquet head and take the ball early on Maria's serves.

One thing I find particularly funny. Sharapova hit just 6 winners against Na Li. But her fans obsessively defended her performance claiming she did the right thing and played a good match. But when Sharapova gets beaten in a similar manner all they can do is refer to Radwanska as a pusher. Hypocrisy in the extreme or what? :haha:

Should be quoted :worship:

NID.

Radwanska never once looked like she would allow Sharapova to dominate her consistently. Solid as a rock, not giving Masha anything, and refusing to give Sharapova an easy ball or error on any important point. Clutch play at it's finest. Maria was never allowed to get comfortable. "Vulture" is enjoying her meal very much.

Go back to Russia Maria. :bigwave:

I guess we kinda all saw this coming. Good for Radwanska though.

Maria's bad Karma "Isn't she back in Poland" comments coming back at her with a swiftness (along with her recent finals play). Ironically, Maria doesn't always hit a lot of winners in many of her matches either (as far as the Radwanska hate).

Oh well. Let's see what the clay season brings?

It should be an interesting rest of the year, I'm sure.

TO ALL OF YOU POINTING UNFORCED ERRORS TO JUSTIFY, get it once and for all:

if you cant hit through an opponent and that opponent wont miss, youll end up hitting an error!! so simple

marias errors werent in the 2 or 4 ball of the rally, she hit them deep in the rallies when nothing worked for her

I didn't see the final stats of the match, how many forcing shots did Radwanska make Maria strike ?

Radwanska's counter-punching is extremely boring, nothing really exciting in her game than just rally ad aeternam -- there's nothing --

I'm a fan of Andy Murray's game a lot too fore time but Radwanska is just totally off -- she's just a slightly more aggressive version of Wozniacki that's all. She has no game-plan, I see no breaking rhythms in her game for that matter the slices people praise her for a extremely rare unless in defense at times -- she just reacts. There's no initiatives in her game.

She's just boring, technically and her style.
No, Agatha can construct points when playing against less powerful - she hit 22 in the semifinal (out of 120 point played which you'd admit is a great stat), she just couldn't set them up when her opponent hit as powerful as possible, so she was only playing to make Martha look stupid, which annoyed Martha even more. It's not easy to handle Martha's pace, otherwise she wouldn't get to final both in IW and Miami.

There's a substantial difference between Li Na and today's Masha. In the sense that the differential was minus 15 as opposed to minus 40. Masha still hit a lot of winners.

Obviously you've missed Pova's UE count :o That number says everything you need to know!

Look at the matches she's played against contenders this year.

AO SF - kvitova (she scraped through somehow, but i think we can all agree kvitova was playing poorly)
AO F - azarenka (slaughtered, her serve was massacred and azarenka way too consistent off the ground)

Paris - kerber (full of UE, totally outplayed by a consistent kerber)

IW - kirilenko (needed 3 sets to scrape through)
Ivanovic (retirement)
Azarenka (again slaughtered on her own serve, azarenka too solid off the baseline)

Miami - Li/Wozniacki (Playing mediocre tennis all tournament long, She beat Li convincingly, but Li was terrible. Then scraping past Wozniacki losing serve a ton of times.)
Radwanska (Playing a close match with good serving, but just lost the match on a few important points.)

I can't understand how you think this match was worse then any of the other matches she's played this year. When she's been under pressure from top contenders this match has been her best match to date this year.(considering radwanska was playing well and kvitova was playing poorly)

I think pova is going to have a very good clayseason if she keeps up the serving from today. She's gonna have way more time to set up her shots on the clay and it will do her the world of good if she can serve like she did today.

It was a fun thing to watch, but they did have a point in that match. Sharapova didn't need to hit any winners in that particular match. And she probably knew it.

She has some of the best ROS statistics on tour, in every category and couldn't get a break ONCE on RADWANSKA. Rethink that.

Sorry, but her RoS was as good or bad as usual. She had a lot of RoS winners and some more RoS UEs. As usual. That was NOT the problem. She had no game otherwise, That WAS the problem. I personally think when it comes to RoS, other players are more efficient than Sharapova. They hit less winners, but much less UEs too and have a good opening into the rally. Additionally, hitting RoS UEs against Radwanska is a waste. Sharapova does that against any player, good or bad serve. Radwanska's serve will not break down just because Sharapova hits a few RoS winners left and right. It's just the wrong strategy.

I do not think she will shes vulturing tournament left right and centre she has a huge clay court schedule its wozniacki esk almost, the only think I like about radwanska that makes her different from wozzy is her drop shots and lobs and its the only reason I watch her game because they can be equisit, I guess if she has beaten caro in the final I would be happy for her, But I am huge maria fan and I longing for her to be sucsessful and its not happening for her and it makes me sad, when she does that performance its not good, But I wish radwanska luck I just wish she was a little more aggressive.

Exactly... I think Maria tried her fair share of pushing/defense against Aga occasionally today and it sometimes worked but not always because Aga has improved her forehand significantly in dealing with high balls. Maria doesn't get credit for her improved mobility and Aga doesn't get credit for her improved offensive skills.

The other weird thing is how so many people in here claim to like or know tennis and yet cannot understand how good placement on the serve and a ball that stays low or high and into the body is not easy to tee off on. Maria made quite a few returns, BUT and this is the key: If you place the serve well it pretty much forces the returner to hit to certain places on the court that the server can defend quickly. Maria would return a bigger serve that is poorly placed better than a slow, low serve that arcs away from her. Tennis is still ultimately all about PLACEMENT and BALL MOVEMENT. Power is nothing more than a way to rob someone of time but if they handle that power and use it against you then it has no real purpose. Movement of the ball and footwork are more important.

You're an idiot then. Go to the WTA site to look up # of points on first serve, second serve, # of breaks, BP conversion, % of return games won.

These have nothing to do with hitting winners, but effective overall returning.

Come back to me when you've seen the stats.

In all honesty, Maria should have made a better match of it.

Sooooo many mid court balls and she just couldn't win the point most of the time.

I have to say that the way Aga manipulates the ball sometimes is quite astounding. Thoroughly deserved win.

Mary Jo Fernandez also just pointed out how Aga's coach has said that Aga has gained upper body strength. I noticed this too... She is hitting the high shots good and deep with great direction and pretty flat. Mainly if she gets a high sitter on the baseline she just nails it into the corner and the point is over. That is a big sea change in her game. She may not absolutely demolish the ball but she is hitting through it (unlike Wozniacki who will just loop it deep with topspin and prolong the point).
