Absolutely!

It was great to see her finally beat Sharpova at the YEC, and now's she's finally beaten Venus too. And, if she beats Serena tomorrow, she will be one of a very small number of players to beat Venus and Serena at the same tournament. I'd sure love to see that! GM will be complete chaos if that happens.

Wow! Nail biting stuff! Really happy for Sam that she was able to regroup in the 3rd set. Definitely her best win of the year considering her head to head record against Venus, the fact she has to play 5 sets of tennis in tricky conditions and how out of sorts she was in the second set. She is definitely made of sterner stuff lately - what a fighter! so proud :):bounce:

Hard to know what to expect from the SF. On one hand it's a tough ask for her to come out after playing 5+ sets in cold windy conditions and beat a player of Serena's quality. But if her body does hold up, she's getting close to playing her best tennis again, and is obviously loving being back on clay, so she should have a very good chance.

If she beats Serena, the final won't be a walk in the park by any means. There's always a danger of Sam suffering a bit of a letdown after having to pump herself up to play Venus and Serena back to back, and we saw in Dubai how dangerous Lucie can be. Still, you would have to strongly favour the winner of Sam-Serena to take the title.

Ah, I have a few days off, so I was hoping Sam was kind to me overnight and won...and (against all of my pessimistic, melancholic energy) she won!

One more of her masters she has beaten, plus I get to see her again; I'm happy. :D But I am going back to pessimism-ville and saying Sam will probably be too tired to win - prove me wrong Sam and win convincingly! :armed:

(P.S: Is it just me, or is GM the worst it has even been right now?)

The old reverse jinx trick: good one :yeah:. Hopefully it'll work again today. I'm also a bit worried about how Sam will pull up after five and a half sets yesterday. But even if she loses I think she can be happy with her tournament, she seems to have found her clay legs already :)

GM is pretty bad right now in general, but I actually think there has been a distinct improvement lately in the tone of comments people make about Sammy. There are always a few congenital haters (like the one you nailed today with your dry understated put-down :yeah:) but most people seem pretty respectful towards her atm. Hope it lasts

(P.S: Is it just me, or is GM the worst it has even been right now?)

Yeah, GM is pretty bad right now, but I'm not sure it's the worst it's ever been. I remember when I first started lurking there was a band of Sharapova fans who despised Kim Clijsters with a passion. They were so unbelieveably hateful toward her. They seriously kept me from signing up for TF. I am a big Kim fan and I didn't want to get caught up in all the drama.

There is a lot of hate now too, but it's almost like it's bandwagon hate. When they were hating on Kim, it lasted. Now they seem to move on to the next thing. Serena fans seem to have kept up their hatred for Sam, but most of the others seem to have moved on to someone else to hate. Even FlameOn, one of the biggest Sam haters, now directs his hatred toward Aga Radwanska, and he has even been picking Sam to win some of her recent matches.

On the other hand, there seems to be more bickering and insulting. It seems the every thread on GM devolves to the level of 12 year olds fighting in the school yard. I don't know how the moderator's can stand it. The gifs were really getting out of hand for a while, but seem to have calmed down a bit. I guess it all depends on who's playing whom, and who's winning. It seems to be particular fan bases that like to create more drama. I generally find it all amusing, but I guess it's more amusing when my player wins and I get to watch the drama-queens either disappear or eat crow.

The average GM regular is easily distracted by shiny objects, so to speak. There are other players right now who are beating their favorite players, and saying things that are considered to be diva-like or creating drama. As a result, they're putting most of their energy toward bashing and hating Azaranka and Aga Radwanska. As soon as Sam beats one of their favorites and they are no longer distracted by the drama surrounding other players, they'll be back to hating Sam. I've noticed that the hatred for Woz has dropped too. You can bet that if she gets close to #1 again, the hatred for her will start back up again too.

The reverse trick is something I have mastered from watching women's artistic gymnastics. (I had an affinity with beam specialists; now THAT is hell to watch!) But yes, I will be happy, even if she loses. I just want the match to be competitive and of a high quality.

Yeah, I had figured as much - GM seems to be a dog-eat-dog world. (Could you imagine the main nasty GM trolls battling it out in some sort of Hunger Games scenario?! There would be a lot of blood spilt! )

I am glad Sam is getting respect though; she's deserved it from the word "Go", but better late than never I guess.

P.S: Oh, and thank you for your compliment on my comment earlier; that post just really bugged me and needed a good ol' fashioned dry put down, as you so eloquently put it. :)

Yes, there is a lot of bandwagon hate, I agree with you - but just some of the vitriol that has been literally spraying from their mouth recently is just abhorrent, even for GM's standards. And you do get a fan base that generally hates one player; it is often when they are perceived as a threat. That is why most Serena fans really hate on Sam - they know, in their heart of hearts, that even if Serena is at her peak, peak Sam can still really take it to her.

...plus, that US Open final stings! (I, now and then, feel like rubbing salt into their wounds, but I refrain. ;) )

But I guess every fan base has their own share of problems.

(...except ours of course; Sam is too perfect for that. )

Shit happens. This is not nice, but Sam will bounce back. I'm not going to make any excuses (on GM anyway), but if the situation was reversed and Serena had spent 4 hours on court yesterday I think it would have been pretty onesided in Sam's favour. Probably not as onesided as this though, and given the GOAT form Serena was in, I doubt that Sam would have won even if her game was on.

I hope you're not offended, but I was sure you had your wires crossed here, so I just checked. It's true! But given the fact that Vika and Aga have been winning just about everything this year, with Maria picking up most of the crumbs, I guess it's not that surprising.

All in all this confirms the fact that despite this heartbreaking result, Sam is actually in a pretty good spot at the moment. She's obviously being pretty philosophical about it, Serena was out-of-this-world good, and despite Sam's protestations, her serves and groundstrokes were not quite as potent as they can be (not that she could have beaten this Serena even if they were).

If I may talk about Serena for a second. I love her game and it really pisses me off that she never committed to the tour the way the past greats did. If she had, she would be the best by far. Whatever.

I think the trouble is partly that Serena is so much better than her competition that it must be really hard for her to find the motivation to play her best tennis week in week out. Even Fed has to work hard to win a lot of his matches, even against people like Tsonga, let alone Rafa, Novak and Andy. Peak Serena is practically unbeatable on the WTA tour, and I don't even thing it was much of an exaggeration by her to say that she could have beaten Roddick yesterday. Sam can take it as a compliment that Serena pumps herself up so much more when she plays her than when she plays most of the others.

But Sam is getting better. Let's see her peak at the French :cheer:

Exactly! A result like this sucks, but in the grand scheme of things I don't think it's a big deal in terms of what she can achieve on clay this year.

GM hates anyone that wins lots of matches. Especially someone whose playing style they don't agree with. Wozniacki the past few years and Radwanska now.

They also hate anyone that loses a match they shouldn't lose. Best time to post some GIFs or make insulting remarks.

Serena fans have always been terrible. Going back a few years you can find a thread that had Sam beating Serena in Stanford (before Sam became a top player). It was vile.

The easiest to avoid hate is to support someone that no one really knows. But then where's the fun. ;)

Nope, I'm not offended at all because I didn't believe it either. Given that Sam's only won more than one match at three WTA tournaments this year, it makes me wonder what the rest of the tour have been doing

You're right, the points distribution throughout the top ten looks like it's going to be a lot less even than it was last year. So Sam probably won't need 5000 points to just barely qualify for the YECs by the skin of her teeth.

It's also a really smart move I think to give Eastbourne a miss, after reaching the SF twice in a row only to bomb out in R1 at Wimbledon she seems to have twigged that it's probably not the best spot to prepare her grass game.

Yeah, it sucks for you for sure, especially since Sam usually does so well at Eastbourne. For someone who supposedly sucks on grass she has a great record there, the surface seems really responsive to her spin. But the down side is that when she goes to Wimbledon everything suddenly falls flat and she's a sitting duck. Hopefully the change will work well for her.

Too true. It was great to see almost all of Sam's doubles run with only a grounds pass - and she was often playing on courts where the players walk right past you going on and off. I wonder if her US Open success will affect where she plays her singles matches. She had a very small court last year for her first (and last) match and meanwhile Petko played on one of the outside showcourts...

I would love it if Sam's matches with Kerber and Goerges were televised this weekend. Sam/Goerges at Stuttgart last year was such a high quality encounter; and I want to see if Sam can break the voodoo curse that has been placed upon her that prevents her from beating those she defeated in her run to the USO title.

If Sam could pull off 3 wins that would be really amazing. On the the other hand, given the quality of the opposition it's entirely possible that she will play really well and still lose both her singles matches (I assume she would skip the doubles in that case). I think our main hope hinges on Kerber not being very good on clay, and on Goerges buckling under the pressure. Who knows, nothing-to-lose Jarka might even pull off a win against one of them in that case.

Jarka may be playing not so great tennis but I think being in this team environment and being around Sam, and DT will really help her. Im not saying she'll pull off a win but Im not going to completely rule it out.

But yeah when you look at it the outcome pretty much is on Sam and how she plays. Which is alot of pressure but its on Clay, she hasnt been playing badly lately, despite her thrashing in Charleston (which against Serena sometimes it just happens) so I think she'll be fairly confident.

I believe by the second week the courts are more compacted and the ball bounces a bit higher. But I think it's dependent on the weather as well - if it's dry and warm the courts will be faster but the ball bounces higher, if it's cooler and damp the court is slower but the balls are also heavier and lower bouncing. I'm not sure which would be better since a totally different combination would suit Sam i.e. slow and high bounce. All technicalities really - fingers crossed for a good showing.

I think Sam would prefer high-bouncing fast courts, because that would make her kicker very effective. She would have less time to get into position to play her forehand of course, but if her serve is working well that shouldn't be too much of a disadvantage. On slower, low-bouncing courts any player with a good return of serve will thrash her I fear. If memory serves, that was pretty much how the courts in Australia were playing. :bigcry:

I would love to clone DT and give the copy to Jarka. I think he would be a great influence on her. Maybe after Sam retires in ten years time...

Jarka can surprise us sometimes, and we all know she's got the game to challenge anybody. She had a good result at IW, and took a set of Clijsters at Miami, so hopefully her form is on the up. If Kerber doesn't like the clay, or if Goerges goes into frustrated unforced error mode, maybe Jarks can "snatch a wig" (or two!) :D

You're right, she's had some decent results there in the past before she achieved the status of great white hope of Aus tennis, and I guess the surface hasn't changed since then (or has it?) I did have the feeling that her kicker was falling really flat there this year, but that could just be because she lacked the confidence to really go for it. Even when the court suits her she can serve poorly at times.

A few interesting comments from Venus on her match with Sam at Charleston:

On the loss to Stosur...
"It was a well-contested match, and she came out on top. It took me a set and a half to really get used to her game again, because I haven't played her in a long time and she plays a lot differently to everyone. I don't mind power, I enjoy the challenge of it, but she plays and executes a power game very well.

"Especially in the third set I let her dictate the points. At the same time, whenever she got her racquet on the ball she was just going for it, so sometimes it's hard to defend against that. And her shots were all landing."

On Stosur having won her third round match earlier in the day too...
"She's so fit. She's extremely fit. She works very hard. She's very focused, so I definitely wasn't expecting a letdown or anything like that. And I wasn't expecting her to not play well either - I got everything I expected today."

SilverPersian

I'm not sure Dave being there is a good thing actually. She might prefer to just work the match through by herself.
