what the fuck, Sam? You break her right now and get this over with. And put on your sunnies. I normally find the deer in headlights look attractive, but right now it's just annoying me.

We're going to have to be this assertive with her from the start of her QF match.

Looking on the bright side, that was one of those matches where Sam's a-game had taken the day off, but she still came through. In the past these days have often meant an early exit (last year R3 case in point). Assuming that this was just her random bad day at the office, better to get it out of the road against Sloane than against Domi/Angie/Sara/Masha/Kvitty....

Yeah, it's like the Elizabeth Kubler Ross 5 stages of grief:
denial - okay so Sam started off serving badly, she'll get better
anger - fuckity fuck fuck fuck Sam, what the fuck is wrong with you?
bargaining - okay Sam, just hold your serve here and you can get back into this match
depression - fuck, this isn't looking good
acceptance - that one is hard, it took me until she won the U.S. Open to finally accept her loss at the FO final

I actually tried the visualization thing before today's match, with Sam hitting wicked kick serves, and Sloane just putting her arms up over her face to try to protect herself. Even though that didn't work, I'll still imagine Sam's serves bouncing over Cibulkova's head.

^Brilliant. I wonder what the long-term psychological health implications are for fans of Sam, if they are subjected to a cycle of grieving akin to the loss of a family member/friend :sobbing:

I don't know what the tour organisers are thinking with the scheduling. They didn't get through all of the matches they wanted to yesterday on the two main courts. So today, they decided to keep the same scheduling plus the left over matches from yesterday. You need to make some more use of court one people!

Not watching anything live, but idly glancing at the livescore, I'm encouraged by the fact that Maria is having such a hard time holding serve in her match against Zakopalova. She'll probably win the match, but clearly she isn't in Stuttgart GOAT-serving mode. Without her amazing serving that day I have little doubt that Sam would have won. So if Sam can only reach the final she will have a great chance at the title I think, even if it is Masha on the other side of the net.

I know: one match a time. But a guy can dream can't he?

Maria is struggling but its tough conditions. Pretty windy. Klara is matching it really well with Masha in rallies, getting the better of her alot of times but she she stuffs it up with a bad last shot. Maria is also eating up Klaras serve when she hits a weak one.

but yeah Maria is not playing her best, shes had easy first rounds so it really shows how she can be troubled.

This is my point really. Maria always kills weak opponents, I mean she just slaughters them, but that is usually not a good indication of how she will do when she gets more opposition.

She's always tough because she takes every opportunity she gets, and punishes her opponents when they fail to take their chances (like she did when Sam didn't serve it out in Stuttgart:bigcry:). But there are heaps of flaws in her game that a good player can exploit. Not saying Sam will definitely beat her if it comes to that, but Maria doesn't own her on clay by any means.

I've started to dislike Sharapova quite a bit less lately too, but it has nothing to do with how hard she works. I'm quite the Chelsea Handler fan (American tv show), and when Sharapova did an interview with Chelsea Handler I found her quite engaging. Also, I somewhat like A. Radwanska, and if I can forgive her what is sometimes perceived as bitchiness in her, I should be able to forgive Sharapova any bitchiness. I am never going to be a huge Sharapova fan, mainly because I can't get over the screeching. Then again, I was a huge Seles fan, and I forgave her grunting, but it wasn't nearly as annoying to me as Sharapova's screeching.

And speaking of Sharapova - seems like she did a Sam today, unable to close it out on her own serve, so she has to break to win. IF the final ends up being Sharapova and Sam, which with Li Na out seems like the most likely outcome assuming Sam doesn't have a major brain fart in the QF or SF, I hope Sam figures out how to serve out the match. I don't want to see an endless third set because neither one can serve it out.

The only thing I can't stand about Sharapova is her screaming every point. It is totally noise pollution and unnecessary. I would never want to sit in a match watching that because my ears are sensitive to loud sounds. I don't care she grew up playing that way. It should have been nipped in the bud long ago.

Other than that, she's actually cool. Very intelligent and always has interesting things to say. Great player, of course.

Yeah, she really is pretty cool. I didn't realize that until relatively lately. I think the screeching turned me off so much that I didn't want to even consider anything good about her.

I think the WTA needs to force the screamers to wear bark collars (the collars for dogs that give them a shock when they bark). That'll stop the noise pollution! I would never support a dog being forced to wear one, as I think it's cruel, but Sharapova and Azarenka are not dogs. It really is a pretty funny visual to think of them playing each other with bark collars on.

As for the QF. I think Sam has an advantage against Domi considering Domi's height. But Domi is very capable of outhitting somebody in a rally if she is playing well. But Sam offers Domi and different type of game than Vika did.

Yes, she's not stupid for sure, and as you said when she puts her mind to it she can be quite engaging. That's actually one reason I can't stand her bitchiness: I feel she shouldn't need that, she should be kind of above it. Thinking statistically, I think that she has the greatest odds of making the final of anyone on her side of the draw by far. But, I also know that she can have bad matches and lose against players that should never beat her. She had that type of match yesterday, and she got through it. I'm not happy that she couldn't close it out on her serve.

All that said, I think Dave Taylor will work with her on some of her issues from that match, and she'll be ready for the QF and then the SF. I think she'll make the final, but with Sam, you just never know. I don't expect her to have two bad matches, but I also expected that she would dominate Sloane Stephens, and that certainly didn't happen. With Sam, you just never know, but I'm optimistic.

I think in a strange way the shitty match yesterday might help. As you mentioned Dave will have taken notes on the match, and he and Sam love having something to sink their teeth into in terms of preparation. It also kind of lowers the expectations on her in a way. I think despite having the game to destroy pretty much all the players left in her half she's no longer seen as such an overhelming favorite as she would have been if she had completely blitzed Sloane.

I think little things might be key. She has to be aware of the specific things her opponent is likely to do to try to hurt her. Things like the way Domi rushes her serve, hitting it almost before the returner is ready for the point. She did that very effectively against Vika, to a point bordering on gamesmanship I thought. Sam needs to be fully composed to play each point, and if Domi is rushing her she won't be. She also has to remember that she doesn't have to be great in every match, she just has to be better than her opponent. Domi doesn't have much to hurt her with, so even if Sam takes a little bit off her kicker and topspin FH, Domi is too small to be able to really attack it, so Sam should be able to play a bit within herself I think.

If she reaches the SF I'm pretty confident she will beat whoever is on the other side of the net. Both Sara and Angie are good enough to make Sam sweat a bit, but as long as she keeps her cool they haven't got the game to really get her on the ropes. The fact that she's played both recently on clay will help. She knows what they'll throw at her and will be well prepared.

How she'll go if she reaches the final is anyone's guess, but I think she'll at least be competitive if it comes to that, no matter who the opponent.

YES! You nailed that exactly about Radwanska being more childlike. I hadn't realized that until you pointed it out, but it is quite true. She certainly doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. I also agree with you about Maria's "regal air of a princess condescending to be nice to the plebs."

And about Maria fans, you are right, they are mostly pretty cool.

When I first started lurking TF a few years ago, Maria fans were the reason I didn't create an account. They were so horrible that they scared me away. I am a huge Clijsters fan, and they were so nasty on every thread about Clijsters. It was seriously at the level of nastiness of Serena fans. I haven't noticed as much nastiness from them since then, and when they do get pissed off at any certain player, it generally dies down after a while. The nastiness of some Serena fans never does down. They will tear Sam apart until the end of time because she beat Serena at the USO.

Towanda - I saw that Chelsea Lately interview with Maria - it made me actually like her. (I just respected her as the great player she was before; for her determination and sheer grit).

Watching her fall at the last hurdle in two of the last three slams has made me feel a bit sad for her as well. I really hope she can win at least one grand slam this year; maybe Wimbledon...

...not this one, however. Sam, I want you to win this. Look, I know we have had some confidence issues in the past with you, and I know you have had confidence issues with YOURSELF in the past. But Sam, it is time to smell the blood in the water; you are great with your H-2-H with all of the remaining three girls in your half, you are a grand slam champion and you are great on clay.

So I want you to win it all...even if it is to shut up a certain poster AND make them choke on the fact that their all-time favourite tennis player will hand you that trophy this year.

(But really - that would be amazing, no? :hearts: )

Dazza -

I'm with you on all of that. I'd like to see Maria win a GS this year too. I like Kvitova a lot, but I wouldn't mind a Wimbledon final rematch with Maria winning this time.

And, I want Sam to win this FO so badly, and more specifically I want her to beat Maria to win it. I want to see Seles (one of my favorites ever) hand her that trophy. Even though she won the USO, the loss at the FO still stings, and she is so great on clay that she should be a FO champion. She has a good shot at getting to the final, and she needs to take it this time. So, if Sam can win the FO, Maria win Wimbledon, and Kim win her final USO, it will be an absolutely perfect year. That's not asking for too much, is it?

:hearts: )

 I hadn't thought of that. Yes, that would make it even sweeter (if that is possible) if Sam were to win. That "certain poster" would choke on his/her own bile I think.

I hope you don't mind my commenting here. I'm a huge fan of Sam. I always want her to win (I have only a problem with that when she's playing against Agnieszka).

When it comes to Maria I don't like her at all. I hate her shrieking. I can't stand it. And she behaves like a diva. Today I've read that when she's walking across the courts in RG there are always 6-8 bodyguards with her. I don't want her to win any slam more. Unfortunately I think it's quite probable since she's a very good player.

From the point we are in, I find that the note of Sam at 01:38 during her USO R3+ interview is quite accurate, reapplied today too. Nice to compare those state of minds at that level of competition: when you know what happened next :)

Stromatolite: We still have some time to figure out what therapy to adopt that day. I think the best is to ease down the pressure as much as possible in between now and that day in New-York.

In this one video (http://uk.video.yahoo.com/yahooeurosport-10104300/ukeurosportnew-10104448/stosur-s-backroom-team-29551050.html), I guess from today, but which is not exactly a presser, I find her pretty relaxed. Hope the whole team is not perceived as a pressure. B.

Wow I can't believe every day has brought a major upset - now with Li Na going down.

The remaining players overall have little experience in playing in the 2nd weeks of Grand Slams:

Sam: QF, SF, F and a W
Cibulkova has two QFs and a SF
Errani has one QF
Kerber has one SF
Shvedova has one QF
Kvitty: 2 SF, a W and a QF
Kanepi: 3 QFs
and of course Masha has been through this 1000 times.

So Sam and Kvitty are the only two (apart from Masha) who have gone past a SF and who have made 4 QFs. That experience has to count for something. Hopefully it means the lesser experienced players will find themselves out of their depth and will help Sam to get through the draw. Can't wait for tonight's match! :cheer:

There go my fantasies of a NaNa-SamSam final. I totally stopped paying attention to the livescore after she won the first set; I guess I should have known better :sobbing:

She is such a beautiful person. Even in a grey hoodie she looks better than most supermodels :inlove:

I think stromatolite said that PC is the best court for Sam? High bouncing and relatively slow - so hopefully that will help out against Domi a bit.

Apparently the cloud cover is going to thicken over Paris around 4pm, so hopefully Sammy will have the match wrapped up by then :cheer:

And, I want Sam to win this FO so badly, and more specifically I want her to beat Maria to win it.
My dream scenario too.

Hopefully it would shut up anyone calling Stosur a 'one-slam wonder'. Two slam titles in a year means no-one can say you were just lucky - you have to be considered one of the best of your era.

Disposing of Maria in their most important ever match would also shut up those who say she can not beat this rival. As Sam's had some luck in the draw, beating the red-hot Pova in the final might also shut up a few who will say she had an easy draw. You can only beat the opponents the draw throws up and - in any case - she hasn't dropped a set so far.

For the icing on the cake, I'm hoping Sam can win her QF and SF in straight sets too. And that the final is held in hot and dry conditions, with the crowd obviously on Sam's side! :)

Let's get the first one out of the way tonight Sam!

I only know what I've read and heard, mainly from comments from DT, but Mats Wilander said much the same. The main feature of PC that real aggressive claycourters like Sam and Rafa love so much is the high bounce. I don't think it's slow, in fact if anythink I think it's relatively fast for a claycourt, but I don't think that's bad for Sam, because it makes her kicker and topspin FH even tougher to handle.

Definitely a good thing that Sam is first on today. I only saw the tail end of yesterday's action, but it looked like a bloody WW1 trench war, it was that heavy. Hopefully playing early will mean that the courts are a bit dryer, but it'll probably still be pretty heavy. I think Sam can handle that, she's played a few matches recently in similar conditions and so knows she has to be be a bit more patient than when it's dry.

Today we have our annual company outing (which is usually pretty boring, but kind of compulsory), starting about an hour before Sam goes on court, so I'm going to miss her match.:fiery::mad::tape::help: Hopefully I can pick uip livescores on my mobile. Anyway guys, cheer her on from me please?

Very nervous, almost sick....
