Glad it was a 2 easy sets:) Now I need Wozniak or Cilbukova to somehow upset Azarenka, Errani to beats Kuzzy, Kerber to beats Pennetta. Li to defeats Kvitova and Wozniacki to stops Sharapova. Am I asking too much? :)

If anything Woz or Domi to beat Vika would be priority. But Sam has to get through Sloane first.

Great win for Sam! Was bracing myself for her to lapse and loose her serve mid set but she steadied herself. So that's an real improvement from the way she played during the 3r of the USO. Great backhand to end the match too :)
Just came back from Roland Garros but was a bit upset at not seeing Sam play against Falconi as I didn't have tickets for Court 1. Got to watch her doubles match with Julia though so that was at least a consolation. They lost but it was nice to see Sam relax and just have fun out there. Roll on R4 ;)

"Petrova serves, a set and 3-5. 30-all and Sam senses blood. She pushes the Russian back with some beautiful deep sliced backhands and Nadia eventually puts one wide. Match point and Sam signs off with a beautiful deep two-handed power backhand. Either way, Sam's gonna getcha!"-As it happens

I don't think there's any chance of THAT many upsets...

haha.....too funny. Probably easier to hit the jackpot! I am actually quite curious as to how Sam playing like this (she could do with a few more first serves in) matches up against Vika on clay. Its probably her best opportunity to notch her first win against Vika so even though I would be really nervous I kinda want this to happen.

For some reason Sam seems to get along really well with Italians and Germans. I think she's on really friendly terms with almost all the Italian girls, and obviously playing doubles with Sabs and Jools she really clicks with them as well. I'm going to watch Sam play in 's Hertogenbosch in a few weeks, so I hope Julia is playing doubles with Sam there as well.

Yeah, it is easy to overlook Stephens. I am really confident that Sam will win that match, but we all know what she is capable of, both good and bad. It's hard not to look ahead given some of the potential match-ups. Petrova was one I was worried about and now that she's gotten through that one I can't stop thinking about a possible SF against Sveta. I love Sveta, but not quite as much as I love Sam, and that will be a drool-worthy match-up. I gotta get back to thinking about the 4th round, and one match at a time.

Go to a library or a coffee shop and use their Internet. That is what I did today. I am on vacation, hiking in a national park in Utah, and I hiked an hour from my campsite to a coffee shop so I could see today's match. It's the only one from this FO I have seen. It was worth the effort.

Vika has looked less than impressive so far IMO, even discounting her awful first round. Not that I'm taking her lightly, but I think Sam's got a more than decent chance of beating her if they meet.

She's had one of the best runs to the second week of any of the players so far, but the headlines on the WTA and RG websites are all about the divas who lost dismally, or lower ranked players enjoying their 15 minutes of fame.

I know, it's actually good for Sam that she can fly under the radar a bit, but she works harder than probably anyone else on the tour, is an exemplary ambassador for the sport, and goddamnit, is a reigning slam champ and former finalist at this event. She deserves more respect:mad:

She's not the physical type I usually like, but in an overall package way she is beautiful. Beautiful eyes, smile, hair, arms, down-to-earth personality, beautifully free of diva qualities. I guess you guys are right, at least if she goes on to win the tournament. The thing that bothers me is the thought that she could play a blinder of a tournament up to the quarters, only to lose 16-14 in the 3rd set to Azarenka, in which case all the headlines would go to Vika and how she's living up to her #1 status, and it would be as if Sam had never been in Paris at all. Whereas Aga and Ana are already front-page news based on their pathetic losses in R3.

I saw her play against Sveta in Melbourne. She was very good and Sveta was being a bit headcasey. However, she showed her inexperience a bit there because she really had an opportunity to beat Sveta that day - IIRC there was at least one tiebreak and maybe a 7-5 set. I'd say she has a lot of potential but I'd be surprised if she could handle Sam's kick.

stromatolite
Jun 2nd, 2012, 08:24 AM
Talking of Sveta, did anyone see her Eurosport interview yesterday? It was really interesting: she talked about how she has a new coach who has encouraged her to go back to her roots as it were as a claycourt player. Apparently her other coaches have pushed her to playing the flat-hitting style that most of the top players use these days, but she indicated that that was not really her game. Mats Wilander commented on the interview by saying her natural game is more like Sam's, and that she seems to be going back to that game now.

If she's been pushed to play against her nature that could explain a lot of her apparent headcasery in recent years. It could also mean that she could well make a serious comeback as a top player who contends in majors. I'm actually a bit worried about a potential SF between her and Sam (although if Vika beats Sam I would only be too delighted to see her face a reinvigorated Sveta).

Huntress55
Jun 2nd, 2012, 08:32 AM
Im not too worried about Sveta yet nor am I going to get excited about her returning to the top of the game. How many times have players in a slump talked about getting back to how they once played or feeling like they were ready to return to the top. Even if Sveta has an amazing RG run I wont be satisfied until she has some consistent results.

But if Sam were to face Vika and lose then I would be more than happy if Sveta was there to knock Vika out. But lets hope its Sam that does it :)

Sobering thought: in her whole career, this is just the 7th time Sam has made it through to the second week of a slam.

Happy thought: whenever she has reached the second week in the past she's been very tough to beat.
She's won 4/6 R4 matches, 3/4 QFs, 2/3 SFs and 1/2 Fs. All but one of her losses from R4 onwards have been to the eventual champion (the only exception being her very first R4 match in 2006, which she lost to Hingis, who then lost in the QF).

The weather forecast is not great, which will take a bit of the zip out of the court, but it should be fine I think. I'm more worried about the scheduling. She's last on, after Kuzzy-Sara, Djoko-Seppi and Wawrinka-Tsonga, so with rain interruptions likely it could be touch and go whether they get through the match before dark. Djoko will probably finish Seppi off pretty clinically, but I can see Sveta and Sara grinding away for 2 or 3 hours, and my 5-set detector has gone off the chart at the mere mention of Wawrinka vs Tsonga. That match may never end. Not the end of the world if Sam's match gets bumped to Monday, but I'm sure Sam would prefer to get it over with tomorrow. Plus if it's played on Monday I won't be able to watch it.

Changing the subject: why is it that Kanepi always chokes so monumentally against everybody except Sam? She choked away an unassailable lead against Kvitova in the QF at Wimbledon 2010 after clinically dispatching Sam in R1, now she's thrown an even worse choke against Woz. Not that I mind if Woz wins, it's just frustrating to see that the most pathetic mental midgets magically transform into iron-willed superwomen when they play Sam.

Also, I heard from the German commie that she wears contact lenses, so that might affect her eyesight even more.

She was clearly not seeing the ball as well as Rus was towards the end. I think they need to err on the side of the players when it comes to light. It sucks when a match is decided by something as irrelevant in tennis terms as the light.

^Actually I think she just forgot to shake Arantxa's hand at first. I could be wrong, but I didn't have the feeling she felt any animosity towards her. I think she was just upset in general and wanted to get off the court asap.
