According to her bio she's 5'5" :) and 4-2 in matches this year (I guess that's WTA matches she surely must have played more than that in total). In any case Sam should be able to handle her I think if she plays anywhere near like she did today.

Sam about the flags of the four finalists from the last 2 years on centre court “Last year the Aussie flag was there. This year it’s not. I'm hoping that Benesova knocks out Nadia this evening. Although both have beaten Sammy this year, I think Nadia's a much bigger threat to an in-form, non-Australia, claycourt Sammy.

Benesova's had a slightly better year, so I think it's a real possibility.

It would be a big relief if Benesova were to win today for sure. I think Sam should beat either of them if she's playing well (she played like crap in the matches she lost to them this year), but only Nadia has real weapons that can hurt Sam. I am a bit concerned about the weather. This is what Dave had to say:

"If it's not sunny, it plays dead. If it's sunny, it's great for Sam," said Stosur's coach David Taylor. "This is the best clay court in the world. You can really trust your movement and the bounce of the ball is more lively - but it depends on the sun."

Atm the forecast for Friday, which is when they'd probably play, is cool and cloudy

SilverPersian
May 28th, 2012, 08:36 AM

Hopefully it changes, or Sammy gets some luck and is mostly out there in the sunny weather.

Huntress55

stromatolite
May 28th, 2012, 09:31 AM
I think Sam could beat the likes of Falconi in a blizzard, but it would be nice if the weather smiled on Sam for the really important matches. But yeah, even in cloudy weather I think she is versatile enough to find a way to beat a player like Nadia as well.

Yeah, Azarenka looks clueless out there right now. She'll probably scrape through like she usually does in situations like this, but unless she really figures out how to play on clay between now and the QF Sam can take her out I think. But she has to get that far first.

Even though Vika will almost certainly win this now I find her whole performance very encouraging for Sam. Even now it's not as though she's playing mind-blowingly well, she's just cut down her errors, which has been fairly easy because Brianti's level has dropped off considerably.

stromatolite

^I think Vika will improve as the tournament progresses, but what is encouraging for Sam is that Vika has so far shown no sign of being able to use the surface to her advantage. She's just playing her regular hardourt game and hoping that it's good enough. Compare that to Maria, who is by no means a clay specialist, but she has worked out ways of making the surface work for her.

I think what trouble Vika though was the irregular paced shots that Alberta fed her: heavy forehands, floaty slice backhands, heavy backhands, plus quite a few touch shots. Sam isn't as versatile and will feed Vika much more similar shots. It will be a different type of match altogether.

Still a long way to go until the QF though!

Geez I wish Vika had've lost though. :bigcry:

It's true that some of the things that Alberta did that troubled Vika are things Sam will never do in a million years, but I don't think the match-up will be all that different if it happens. Brianti might be more verstatile than Sam at the low-power end of the range, but Sam can slice and dice a bit when she needs to, and in addition has a whole arsenal of shots at the high-power end that Brianti lacks.

The thing that is encouraging for me in this match is that even when Vika cut down her errors she didn't look particularly dangerous. She did enough to get past a lightly choking Brianti, but her groundstrokes are not particularly potent on clay because the opponent has so much more time to reach them. And her crappy serve is mercilessly exposed on this surface. In short, there is nothing that suggests that Vika will be able to just steamroll Sam on clay like she usually does on HC, and if it comes to a dogfight I think that Sam will have the edge.

With Lisicki and Makarova out, you'd think that if Sam can get past Petrova in the third, she should get through the fourth round as well. I don't think there's anyone in that section left who will trouble Sam.

Sam and Julia drew the sixth seeds, Makarova and Vesnina, in the doubles - they're third up on court sixteen. Must be tough on Julia, who's playing singles today as well.

I'm a bit conflicted on this. If Vika were to lose before the QF that would make Sam's potential path to the final quite a bit easier, no doubt about that. On the other hand, I really want Sam to beat Vika at least once this year, and I can't see that happening on grass or HC if she doesn't beat her on clay first. If Sam can notch up a win against Vika on clay, that might break the mental stranglehold Vika has on her atm, so she could actually have a chance of beating her on other surfaces as well I think.

I think the last hindrance call was a bit rough because the sound was pretty muffled, but the first 2 were right I think. It's unfortunate for Virginie, but the rule is that after a warning a noise like that will be treat as deliberate.

^ Huh. I missed the warning, that's why I thought Eva was being harsh. Fair enough.

Yeah, in the case of undeliberate hindrance, the rule is that the first time it happens the point is replayed and the player gets a warning. The understanding is that if the player repeats the rule after getting a warning, it's treated as deliberate. I don't think the designers of the rule had something like this in mind. People often refer to it as the hat-drop rule: if your hat falls of once, the assumption is that that was an accident, but then it's up to you to make sure your hat doesn't fall off a second time. If you don't fasten your hat better and it falls off the interpretation is that you could have avouded it, i.e. that it's deliberate. Virginie's cries were clearly not deliberate, but the rule doesn't take that into account. But I do think Eva should have ignored her last cry.

Yeah, a lot of people (including me) think they should apply the hindrance rule to grunts. Grunters can certainly avoid grunting more than Virginie could avoid crying out in pain today. But nobody has the guts to take on the grunters, so it's not going to happen.

Mojobackhand

Thanx for the explanation!
Eva tried to make amends for the US Open... :tape: Didn't work out. Tennis Gods sat on higher chair today. ;)

As to this match, it all worked out okay in the end, because Virginie won anyway, and bitter Serena fans can't complain that Eva was unfair to her in her application of the rule.

Yeah, the early start is good for Sam, the afternoon forecast is for cloudy weather and maybe some rain later. Much the same on Friday, so (assuming she wins today) an early start would be nice then as well.

You really missed something special with the Serena match. I'm still in shock tbh, I didn't think I'd ever live to see a player of Serena's stature suffer such a total meltdown. She had the match in the bag in the second set tiebreak, completely lost the plot until 5-0 in the third, then after getting back to 5-3 blew about 5 easy chances to get back on serve with UEs that would almost even embarrass me if I hit them. I feel for her to some extent, she really had her heart set on this title, and that was her undoing in the end. Still, hard to feel too sorry for someone who already has 13 slam titles. At least it's wide open now.

I guess it's easy to forget that Serena is just a person who's capable of getting nervous and making bad decisions at times. Especially when you're not a fan of hers, the tendency is to think of her as an impervious grand slam winning machine.

As you say, I'm sure her hundreds of trophies and millions in prize money and endorsements will get her through these tough times ;)

Why can't Azarenka suffer the same fate?

She still might. I'm looking at Cibulkova or Safarova to get the job done :D

Sam should be okay, but Nadia is dangerous for sure. She played pretty well against Serena in Rome, and has 2 RG SFs and a QF to her name, so she can certainly play well on clay. I hope they get Chatrier in bright sunny weather. Lenglen is much less bouncy.

Aga! :sobbing:

I wish someone would learn how to pronounce "Agnieszka" the Polish way though... it's not that hard.

Kuzzy finishes her demolition job against Aga!:cheer: Except for a brief passage in the second set when she decided to send her brain over to Aga's side of the net it was all oneway traffic. Great to see her getting some form back!

Awww I like Aga and Ana.

I don't hate Ana and Aga (although they both get on my nerves at times), but I have a softspot for the underdog (how could it be otherwise for a Sam fan:lol:). And I've always liked Kuzzy.

Ana lost and Aga getting crushed! How I love it haha. Although Sveta has the ability to go completely the other way at any time :p

Just waiting for Berdych who better get his act into gear!

 Sveta is impressive. I've missed watching her play well. On a good day, she is just absolutely impressive :inlove:

Aww, sorry

I think Anderson is going to win this set, which will mean 5 sets for sure, not a doubt in the world.
Can you please PM me this week's winning lotto tickets?

 Unfortunately I can't do it for lotto tickets, but I can spot a 5-setter a mile off. Useless talent unfortunately :drink:

Sam is my favourite player and I hope she will win the match. Today I'm a bit sad because Aga lost but I hope Sam will show what she can and will qualify to the next round.

Finally Berdych has broken in the 5th. For god's sake let him hang on the break and finish this thing.

Sorry if we celebrated a little too enthusiastically at Aga's loss. Now we really need Sam to win, so your day ends well at least. :)

It's okay. Probably if I weren't Polish I wouldn't cheer for Aga either :). Anyway I'm crossing my fingers for Sam now.
