Took Venus awhile to remember how to win against Ana...and Ana awhile to remember the head-to-head.

Pretty much every aspect of Venus' game is ragged, at times stunning and fragile. Even her movement is less than sharp. All that's to be expected. What's surprising is her level of fight and fitness.

Respect for Venus for pulling out a win while clearly feeling like total shit, in a situation where most other players in her situation would've given a walkover or retired, but this is exactly what people like myself meant when we said her fans are living in cloud-cuckoo land when they're planning out more Grand Slam victories and expecting her to return to a full schedule and be a consistent top player - this was just her 3rd match after 7 months' rest, and at one of the few non-Slam tournaments where she gets days off inbetween matches, and she's already running on fumes, how on earth is she going to be able to play tournaments and win matches on anything like a regular basis? And she's probably going to be even worse in the next match as typically with autoimmune diseases, when you start feeling super-exhausted it doesn't relent until you've rested for a few days. Barring an even bigger choke than Wozniak today from her next opponent (not impossible looking at who her opponent will be), her runs ends tomorrow.

(And yes, I'm well aware she's proved me wrong once this week.......but I'm hardly ever wrong twice in a row  )

Love you dsanders :hearts: Now, please do us all a favor and stop trying to predict her matches :) I mean, if you keep saying she'll lose you may be right eventually :oh:

Expected. I think Ana has an ability to make top players play worse against her, lol. They can't expect her to play a certain way because she gets nervous and then she goes for broke, and then she slices and then she can't hit her backhand, and then all of a sudden her backhand is her biggest weapon...so crazy.

This match was just...atrocious, lol, but Venus certainly lifted her game in that final set. That long game at 4-2 was quite the struggle.

Venus :) Happy to see that her calf was not taped today. Her movement was much better, so the rest of her game was better. Now she can have a day off to prepare for Radwanska. Venus will have her chances in that match as well.

Ana  she had her chances today but didn't take them. She had a decent IW/Miami showing. Hopefully she'll have a much better clay season than last year...

VIP's occasional blinding forehand winner and fluke serve only serves to accentuate how mediocre the rest of her game is.
Some of those returns and backhands gave me so much life.
Laughable return games at 2-4 down in both the last two sets. Gifting 0-40 in one and failing to capitalise on 4 DFs in the other.

This woman is incredible. After the Wozniak match yesterday she looked like she had no chance, but she served well (13 aces is such a rarity for her) and backed it up with some great hitting at times.

It's clear that this disease is something that comes and goes and she just has to ride out those bad days like yesterday. I think Radwanska should be a good warm-up for Azarenka should they meet.

Very encouraging for Venus future if they can make effective adjustment in her treatment and training
first set: Looked drained
2nd set: Progressively looked better
3rd Set: Reached a comfortable gear where she can hold easily and run down balls. Got eve better as the set went on, digging deep when it counted to not let the match slip away; did not give a chance to Ana to come back by getting broken after 2-all.

The amount of Venus cheating today with delaying her serve is phenomenal. Ana wasn't even ajdeing or screaming or whatever. She just didn't have a lot of luck today, at those break points in the second set she was just unlucky. She didn't even play bad, that was a good performance, but it could've been much better. Especially without Williams' clutch behaviour.

Not bad tournament for Ana at all. Even in 2nd and 3rd set when hers FH stop worked on previous level she actually played better than scoreboard shows.

But one thing is really bad for Ana in Miami: Yesterday vs Hantuchova Ana won only 4 out of 12 BPs and save 0 of 2, and today she won only 1 out of 12 BPs and save only 1 out of opponents 6 BPs.

Ana made errors upon errors, especially on the FH side, which was shaky also yesterday. I give it to her that she was able to win yesterday, but today she looked scared, same as against Maria at IW. And I guess Clijsters the last few tiems the played. She just cannot win against them, no matter how bad they play or what condition they are in. Her H2H against them is really awful. Most players can beat them when they play bad, but not Ana, she is just scared.

I TOTALLY forgot about this match  a total shame --

Theoretically Venus beats Ivanovic anywhere, everywhere wasn't so sure about Venus' physical form but the result is not really surprising. Ivanovic's record against the Big 4 is dire. :tape:

Radwanska should be a whole different story though. Venus played 9 sets in 3 matches -- Radwanska is the worst opponent you might want to face if you're not 100% your game so we'll see.

You are still beating this dead horse?
Please get off it, it is already dead.

What is it about some Ana fans? They are OK or satisfied with any Ana's performance, good or bad.

Contrast that with Venus, Maria, Serena fans.
When these 3 players did not play well, we say so, even when they win.
WE candidly say they should play better than that, and if they are still in the tournament, we openly state if they do not improve in the next game, they will lose.

Some Ana's Fan?
She did not play that badly, she is improving, she is very close and her game is coming along nicely, and on and on.
What comes first? Ana attracts fans like these, OR do they adjust to low expectation once they become Ana's fans.?

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the intellect of Vee fans. Can't even reply to a simple question. :tape:

You really went there? It can all be summed up in two words: overcoming adversity.

Venus is an amazing ambassador for the sport, that cannot be denied. She has fought so hard for this sport in terms of representing the tour with grace and fighting for equal prize money. She was the first African American slam winner since Althea Gibson. She has overcome so much tragedy in her life in growing up in the ghetto, the death of her sister, and now coming back from a debilitating autoimmune disease that literally sucks the energy out of her. And despite all of this, she still continues on and triumphs when everyone expects her to fail. She truly should be looked up for all she does. She has an amazing off court career as well. Venus Williams truly is a champion of many sorts.

And yes, your fave could NEVER.

And she often does it. But it happens too often and sometimes it's probably embarrassing to catch it for the 5th time in one game.

And sometimes she gets winners off the wonky tosses, so...I guess she can't decide what to do.

Still, I know her ranking is up, but it seems she still has the same issues.

lol we gave up on her a long time ago, a loss against Venus is still better than most losses she had in these last 3 years... I am just disappointed at her mentality, if she was going for her shot and missing, fine. But she was tentative and scared, that is so annoying, i wonder what is she scared of? Losing? she loses anyways lol, it's just senseless.

Honestly, I feel those aces were due to the fact that for some reason Ana has a LOT of trouble returning Venus's serve. More than other players.. Same thing with Stosur against Serena (Venus also served loads of aces against Stosur last time they played... on clay:unsure:).

Regarding the match, Ana gave Venus a lot of free points, especially that 4-2 game in the third but Venus took opportunities like only a champion can and I respect her so much for that.

And her backhand was off the chain today! Giving me early 2000s tea :inlove:

For doing what??

For what?! Bitch, please.

* for enduring economic hardship and racial prejudice as a youngster
* for surviving gangs in fuckin' COMPTON
* for rising above institutionalized racism during her early days as a pro
* for becoming a champion IN SPITE OF all of the above
* for eloquently spearheading the movement for equal prize money once she was in a position to make her voice heard
* and most of all, for refusing to be counted out TIME AND TIME AGAIN

Haters have long wished to consign her to the dustbins of tennis history, yet Venus just keeps on coming back and proving her doubters wrong. She could easily have called it a day after being diagnosed with Sjogrens, but she chose not to throw in the towel and instead decided to fight a debilitating disease that could've proved career-ending. And, for all intents and purposes, she appears to be triumphing in that war. Venus has nothing left to prove during the rest of this tournament: she's an inspiration, a fighter, and one of our few TRUE champions. Let nobody ever question that.

Ivanovic is 1-8 to Vee, 0-3 to Serena, 0-5 to Justine and Kimmie.

You just have the feeling regardless the form either Serena, Vee or Clijsters come in their matches they will win against her. One exception was that match Venus lost in AO 2008 but Ana was playing certainly much better back then.

For that matter, Ivanovic's last match to Clijsters in Miami, she was 5-0 in the third I think and still managed to lose.

It's great having Venus back, just bloody great!

I never followed her much during the early 00's and so forth, but it's accomodating and a pleasure to grow into a player who gives so much back.

She is a true gem of tennis and I want her to do so darn well!!

So impressed by Venus this tournament. So nice to have her back.
Miami is being good to us, at least in terms of setting up late matches that look like they'll be very intriguing.
Can't decide if Venus is just a naturally entertaining player or if it's all these emotions at getting her back again, but PUT HER MATCHES IN MY EYES.

Really disappointed with Ana. I didn't see the match but I'm guessing after the first set she just kinda froze and no longer believed she could finish it. If even a tired and old (no offence to her) Venus is too much for Ana to handle mentally than it really reinforces my doubts that she'll ever truly be a top player ever again.

Correction, hours, not day.
For better part of the first set, she looked like the Wozniac match.
Thank, gradually in the 2nd set, she started holding serve, and being more aggressive, putting more bite on her shots.
Then in the 3rd, she seems reborn, energy was back, while Ana does not seem to know what was happening to her.

Even though Venus won 6-2 6-2 in the 2 last 2 sets, the score belies a hard fought battle to win those games.

Congrats to Venus. She's a great champion and I admire the effort she's doing. Having say that, the fact that a player so out of form is able to beat a top 3 and a top 15 is embarrasing. This would NEVER had happened on the ATP.
