Serena watched and even held Harry for part of the match. She looks so tense in the late 3rd set!

Aleks choked hard, gagged and nearly died serving at 5-4 in the 3rd. I loved the point at 3-2 in the tiebreak - the lucky net cord for Venus.

Match time: 2h53m.

How Vee got through that I have no idea. So much drama, that smash in the TB that clipped the net and made it over :bigcry:

Aleks had *5-4 30-0 and hit 2DFs :rolls:

Worst match of the year so far? The only thing that saved it for me was Vee's outfit

Fantastic high quality match. Venus played extremely well, one of the best matches I've ever seen her play. It's really a new Venus without Sjögren's, incredible how much this condition debilitated her.

Thank goodness Venus found a way to win despite her horrible movement and bad timing. Wozniak's choke and abysmal serve also helped.

Barring any physical issues, Venus's game in her next match with the winner of Ana and Dani will most likely be a lot more better than today's.

Awful quality. Aleksandra can play so much better than this, but when she comes up against big names, she gets totally tight in each and every moment that matters, Tennis Canada should just give her sports psychologist.

Glad for Venus although, but seriously girl would get killed by anyone that's in form if she keeps playing like this, the forehand and second serves are totally hopeless. I hope she can get it together quickly.

Most painful match I've ever watched. Venus will never be the same again. Looked easily a couple of steps slower than she was 2 years ago. Could only keep her intensity up for a point or 2 here and there. Couldn't hit a BH to save her life.

Respect for Venus for pulling out a win while clearly feeling like total shit, in a situation where most other players in her situation would've given a walkover or retired, but this is exactly what people like myself meant when we said her fans are living in cloud-cuckoo land when they're planning out more Grand Slam victories and expecting her to return to a full schedule and be a consistent top player - this was just her 3rd match after 7 months' rest, and at one of the few non-Slam tournaments where she gets days off inbetween matches, and she's already running on fumes, how on earth is she going to be able to play tournaments and win matches on anything like a regular basis? And she's probably going to be even worse in the next match as typically with autoimmune diseases, when you start feeling super-exhausted it doesn't relent until you've rested for a few days. Barring an even bigger choke than Wozniak today from her next opponent (not impossible looking at who her opponent will be), her runs ends tomorrow.

(And yes, I'm well aware she's proved me wrong once this week.......but I'm hardly ever wrong twice in a row  )

Great fight from Venus, amazing that she didn´t give up there, *24 15-40 down, MP as well at 45* but was able to turn it around (to be fair, Wozniak helped as well obviously)

But not really sure, I mean, 3rd match in a row and she had tapes again, looked tired, she obviously isn´t at 100% and that all still affects her, wonder if she will ever be able to play 5 or 6 matches in a row, but for now I am really happy that she was able to win that today and I just hope that she will be fitter again soon, as she said herself, she feels good but knows that she could even feel better..hopefully :)

Well done venus, it was a really tense match but I liked both players attitude and I am more inlove with Aleks now she is wonderful her mentality on court she is not a bitch like some of the others she was gracious in defeat and signed autographs. Excellent attitude. Well done venus good luck in next round although I am not expecting much.

The fact is that she is PLAYING again. Winning is a bonus. It's a DAY TO DAY thing meaning, SOMEDAYS she may feel extremely fatigued, and then can wake up fine the next. NOBODY knows what to expect until she steps on court. She has proven she can win matches off of mental strength alone, which today is a classic example of that. I wouldn't call her fans "delusional" for supporting their fave, and not jumping on the bandwagon of the "next big thing".

But the sisters continue to break the odds, while most of y'all sit at home behind computers and try to force one of the greatest to ever play the game out. She's here to stay, sorry.

One of the worst matches I have ever had to watch in terms of quality, and I have seen a lot of stinkers involving Aleks. So disappointing for Aleks to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. Horrid choking against a sub par Venus, just horrid. She should have put Venus away several times in this match. :( Such a wasted opportunity.....:banghead:

About the match: one of the worst matches, and one of the worst chokes, I have ever seen. Those DFs were OMG EPIC FAIL, beyond description.

However, the one thing I noticed (I've noticed it before, but especially in this match) is that Venus' behavior is DISGUSTING. She is so unsporting, but gets a free pass b/c she's not as loud and obnoxious and famous as her sister. She violated the time limit on literally every service point (hello Asderaki, what are you doing?). She was rudely throwing the towel at the ball kids (like the topic that was on GM a week ago). She fist pumped a net cord winner, she is the only player I've ever seen that does not put her hand up when she hits those lucky shots. Instead, she fist pumps, unbelievable! All of this was only the second half of the third set, god only knows how atrocious her on-court behavior was in the first two sets.

EDIT: I forgot to mention how her fake grunt changed in volume on every important point. LOL!

And to the pre-teen who quotes me all the time: why the hell would I be pressed about a WOZNIAK match? Get real, I was rooting for Venus because I want to see her get pimp-slapped by REAL competition.

Aleks just needs to find a way to fix her self-confidence issues against top players, and I honestly believe she'll get back in the top 30 pretty quickly. She honestly should have closed it 6-4 in the third. These two DFs at *30-0 were missed by a mile and it's not like her second serve is any kind of risky à la Dokic, I'm dissapointed for her, but I'm pretty sure she'll get over it quickly, her beginning to the year is pretty encouraging considering she's been injured for so long in the last two years.

I'm going to assume Venus was tired and played much better in her previous matches because there is no way she could've beaten Kvitova playing like this.
She has a calf injury that hampered her movement through out the match. That's one of the reasons the match was so ugly. Only her fight got her through this win.

:spit: @ people judging Venus off of this match and assuming she played the same way against Kvitova. She was visibly low on energy from the first point of the match. You need only look at the PICTURES of the Kvitova match to know that Venus was a totally different monster that night. Not to mention that she was moving 500x better (and was actually moving explosively) according to every report about the match. It took about 1 hour today before we even saw her run, that's how much her fatigue (and calf injury?) was holding her back. So stop insulting Kvitova. Venus wouldn't have won 3 games if she dared to play like this 2 nights ago. :help:

:hysteric:

That was one of the worst matches I've ever seen in my life. You can praise Venus for "fighting" all you want but it really isn't hard when your opponent does what Wozniak did. Even Venus' bitches Dani or Ana won't be so stupid.
She had to dig deep and fight to even make it competitive. We all know that Aleks choked, but Venus deserves praise for buckling down and raising her level (from about a 0/10 to a 2/10 :help:) and giving herself a chance to win. We know it wasn't an epic comeback, but it was a tremendous effort to fight back in the 2nd/3rd sets like she did. That's the only thing that she deserves praise for in this match.:lol:

Most painful match I've ever watched. Venus will never be the same again. Looked easily a couple of steps slower than she was 2 years ago. Could only keep her intensity up for a point or 2 here and there. Couldn't hit a BH to save her life.

It's no coincidence that Wozniak has never beaten anybody of note. No guts, no glory.

Indeed.
Obviously you can still see the will and desire is there from Vee, but her condition simply won't allow her to play the way she wants to. As you said she can play the odd really intense point here and there, but it takes the next 3 points out of her:(
Anyway, bottom line is that she is an inspiration to try and not let Sjogrens get the better of her career:worship:

Good to see Venus fans still pressed because of Legend. Rather than debate the very valid points the Legend fan made, they attack Legend herself.

Venus has two more singles slams than Martina. Venus is still playing AND winning. What's there to be pressed about? The 13-12 (Or whatever it is) head-to-head? :tape:

The original point was that Venus, in essence, is disrespectful to the game. Someone who is a fan of Hingis has no right to complain about someone else being disrespectful. How about you try and debate that?

You sound like one bitter ass person!!

How about I've already debated that, and no one has offered a decent rebuttal? Hingis' ON-COURT BEHAVIOR was NEVER an issue, aside from (arguable) the RG '99 final. Not to mention Hingis NEVER had bitter words after she lost a match (except her 1 loss to Anna K).

Try to find one example to prove me wrong. It can't be done.

Venus routinely does everything I've mentioned in this thread. The topic is not about off-court behavior, it's on-court behavior, which Hingis>Venus by FAR.

I have no idea what to say really. Embarrassing and great that Venus won at the same time.

I also have no idea how the stats look decent, it would surely make top20 of worst matches I've seen in my life.
She must've played much better than this, I mean Petra wouldn't lose to this Venus? :help:
Wozniak bores me already with her choking. I like her game, but she's such a mug. Nice to see her signing autographs afterwards, btw.

Venus is done, but it was great to see her on court again after such a long time. If she feels like playing, I'm going to watch every shitfest she puts on

That is dedicated fandom right there - I salute you :worship:

Not good quality at all. However, it's amazing for Venus just to be out there - and winning just adds to it. Some people criticizing Venus and making fun of her illness in this thread are absolutely pathetic.

I agree, enough already with the jokes. It's the same as making light of someone's cancer, or deafness or whatever.

Anyway, glad to see Venus able to come back and do anything. Hope she can get a little rest and fight another day.

Even with the RG 99 final, so what? THat's ONE match. Nobody can find one other match where Hingis' on-court behavior was bad. ONE match in her ENTIRE career!

Meanwhile, Venus' on-court behavior is questionable in every match she's ever played, not to even mention her bitter quotes after she loses.

Why the obsession with Venus? Because she ended up winning her rivalry with Hingis, I guess.

I mean, who cares if she is bitter in her press conferences or not? It's one thing to argue that she has a bad on-court behaviour but when you throw in stuff like ballboy-abuse and bitter press-conferences in the mix you're just undermining yourself. Narrow down your hate towards relevant things which would be the alleged bad on-court behaviour.
