View Full Version : If you could change one rule about women's tennis what would it be?

For me, it's definitely the grunting (more shrieking these days).

Occasional grunting is okay - say in a long rally - or when a player is really stretching. But if I had my way, the constant shrieking on every point would be not be allowed.

BTW, if there really was no way to silence the grunters, I'd like to see the women play best-of-five set finals (in the Grand Slams).

Limit the bathroom breaks to 5 minutes. Anything longer, and she forfits the match (hear that, Kiri!!).

Another thread on grunting ... how original !

At least this one is more subtle.

Gamesmanship : bathoom breaks, shrieking, etc.

Oh, and the on-court coaching which is an absolute joke.
It makes the Tour looks really bad and send the message that little girls need their daddies to fix things.
Nadal needs his uncle to tell him everything but he sits in the stands.

On court coaching. How many men do you see take these...

These women need to be more mentally stable.

I think they should take the grunting players' vocal cords off. :tape:

That was my point ;)

Men use just as much as coaching as the women. It's just more subtle, from the stands.
On-court coaching was a terrible idea that weakens the sport.

Best of 5 sets in grand slams.

There's no time for it in a 2 weeks format.
The quality would be beyond mediocre in a fifth set. The courts are way too slow.

Abolish the rule about what a player must and must not play. OK there are a million and one of them but it's one rule in the sense it is about what a player can and cannot play.

Just to be clear - I am not advocating any changes to the ranking system. So if you don't play the big tournaments you get a zero and can't drop that for another smaller tournament. They are not rules saying where you can and cannot play but simply the way the rankings are calculated. A player would then be free to play when and where they liked. But obviously not playing the big tournaments in favour of the smaller ones they would be sacrificing ranking points and prizemoney - but their choice. No-one to tell them they must or must not do it.

And also to be clear - if a player withdraws late from a tournament she has freely chosen to play with no compulsion from the WTA to play there - there should be big fines - no change there. There would be no excuse now.

It's not a rule but fuck the Roadmap and go back to the old Tier system.

Maybe just make them play best-of-5 from QF onwards, by then the schedule is clear. (And then we wouldn't have to endure best of 5 between badly out-of-form players.

If umpires would actually ENFORCE the time limit rules, Venus and Sharapova and Hantuchova would never cheat their way to another victory.

:yeah: At the moment, for women, majors are physically less taxing than the regular play everyday tournaments.

Ban on court coaching. It's illegal in ATP, why should WTA be different?

It's hard to pick just one as there so many things the women's game needs changing, the main problem with the women's game is the tour schedule itself I don't think they should have changed it the tier system was relevately clear, this premier/international business lacks clarity "premier mandatory" just sounds ridiculous, the ATP tour has got it right clear tournament defintions 250,500,1000 rather than the messy system the women's tour has now.

Grand Slam semifinals and finals over best of five sets!!! It's a little bit annoying, if someone wins a GS with 6-1 6-0 in under an hour or something like this in a GS final. Don't get me wrong, i love womens tennis, but this is really the one thing i would change. It also would give the other girl more chances to come back ;)

Also the final of the YEC over five sets
