Okies. So this MSG exho. Starts at 7PM local .. mens match on first? ... and I understand it will be shown on ESPN, so perhaps there'll be a stream somewhere? (asking as I've never before had any interest in the MSG exho  ).

No idea if that was really the case but if so I feel that she should have gone for it. A win against Sharapova (or at the very least a set) could have done wonders for her confidence.

I really don't know if I should buy into the "she only needs to meet a top player to step up" theory, I still fear that she would receive an absolute hammering from Vika or Kvitova with her current form.

Caro basing confidence on an exhibiton would be a bad sign. If it was someone she'd never beaten in an actul match that might be a bit different (Kim for instance), but she's beaten Sharapova twice in real matches.

Caro's performances against Serena at the US Open, Kim at the Oz Open, and her YEC matches last year say that theory is baloney.

She hit a dropshot at MP, she wasn't playing seriously  Not saying she was just practising but certainly not 100% or even close (I'd say 50%). There was not tension and that changes a lot a match. I wouldnt read that much into it. Apart from the fact that her forehand is getting worse by the minute :sobbing::crying2:

I don't understand why you fear Kvitova on outdoor hardcourt, she could very well beat Caro but I wouldn't be surprised at all if she crushed out early. She hasn't played since the AO and she almost lost to Suarez Navarro. Vika is another story because she's on a hot streak and her game is much more realiable.

Kvitova was just an example, I could have said Radwanska or Stosur instead. I pretty much fear any of the top 20 players in decent form right now. Heck, I really like Julia but she shouldn't be able to beat Caro in straights.. but she did.

Jimmie a little bit of faith ;), yes she could lose against any of the top 20 at the moment, but I wouldn't really be surprised if she beat them either. She has bounced back before. I know right now things aren't looking good but you just need to string a few wins and things can change fast. Julia is just a bad match up, Caro had a great streak going on last year and still lost to her!

Quite frankly I don't think she has to do that much to get back at the top, and start winning again. If Radwanska has been doing fine, she can do better. Main key, lower the UE!! Which means, get that forehand sorted out asap!

I agree. Except in her last match - her BH was awful as well and leaking UEs. I want that BH working today and no UEs. No UEs on her FH either. Keep it deep and expect mainly cross court from her FH unless she gets a short ball - but she can do a few nice angles.

And if she's in a winning position - controlled aggression. Don't need anything fancy or radically out of her comfort zone that she hasn't done a thousand times before. But not ultra passive hitting short in the middle of the court hoping for a UE.

Don't cry, lil' fella, that probably applies to us North Americans much more than to you Europeans. Sometimes I find it maddening when people over there complain about poor coverage. Besides, all Caroline needs to do is to start winning again and we will be inundated with her matches.;)

According to this (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=455377&page=2) thread, Woz hit 4 winners in the first set and Makarova made 23 UEs.

Not sure if it's because of the long rallies that Caro usually makes her players play or if Makarova is just really out of form. Either way, she's winning and that's all that matters. Hopefully her own UE count is low.

Got to watch the match on Tennis Channel in the US. Nice win for Caro, although Makarova was an unforced error machine. Still Caro kept her unforced errors down and there were some classic "Caro points" where she scrambled to stay in some of these rallies, getting just that extra ball back to force a mishit from Makarova.

Can't say that she is "back" yet but hopefully this gets her on her way :)

A few questions I'd be interested in:

Do you know the actual UE and Winners count. In particular I'm interested in Caro's UEs which she made a load of against Julia.
.
When you say Makarova was an unforced error machine - was she making them early. In other words - were there plaenty of long rallies ending with a UE or they didn't get that far before a UE?
.
Was it windy?

Answers in order to the best of my non-expertise:

1. Don't have the exact numbers on winner versus unforced for the match but Makarova was over 20 UEs for the first set when Caro had 6 (Caro also had 4 winners first set). There was not much change for Makarova in set #2 as far as improving her UE count.

2. There were some long rallies, many of which Caroline won after moving her around the court and forcing a mishit from Makarova. There were also some points where Makarova was going for her shot (BB style) and just hitting it out. So, it was a mix between long rallies and making them early.

3. It was absolutely NOT windy. No sign of wind affecting the outcome of this match.

Watching this makes me wonder how in the HELL did Serena lose to this at the AO???

When your opponent is essentially handing you the match and you don't have to do anything special or risky to win, why would you? Caro didn't need to do much in this match. I liked seeing her more steady game tonight and I hope we see more of it in the future, although in those bigger matches versus the better opponents, she will absolutely need to take more calculated risks and not be content to just get the ball back in play.

Generally I prefer to see her unforced errors in the single digits but if she can average six per set I really like her chances of going very deep.

Arvidsson is a different kind of player. Then probably Ana, who is dangerous.
Its time Caro started to put wins together tournament after tournament.
Its been a while, and she's wasted some real nice draws.
Once you start dropping out of the top 4, you start playing Vika and Maria earlier than semis, and Kim and Serena are coming back.

Dont waste this draw
