Okay I think Maria deserves a thread. She's only 16 and already in the top 700! Shes currently ranked 701 but her career-high ranking is 698 which she achieved in November. Maria has 5 wins over top 750 opponents, her biggest win over #550 Artamonova. Shes currently ranked 350 in juniors and her career-high there is 203, but she focuses on senior tour events so that ranking doesn't really matter. Here is some biographical information:
Born: 25 July 1995
Plays: Right handed with two-handed backhand
Favorite Surface: Clay
Coach: Riccardo Rosolin

Maria's BFF on tour is Agni Stefanou who is 6 years older than her. I think Maria used to train at Evert's Academy in Florida because I remember seeing a photo of her with a shirt that said Evert on it, but maybe she was just wearing the shirt...She is a big hope for Greek tennis and her mother is Angeliki Kanellopoulou, who was a former WTA player who achieved a lot. She got up to #43 in the rankings, was a Fed Cup player for Greece for many years, reached the Olympic quarterfinals, reached the final of the WTA Athens event that we used to have in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She played in many Grand Slam main draws and even reached the round of 32 twice at the French Open. Hopefully Maria can be like her mother :D

Προπόνηση με τη Schiavone για τη Σάκκαρη
http://www.tennisnews.gr/images/news_images/Sakkari/2012/sakkari_schiavone1.jpg

Maria was in Rome practicing before Fed Cup and basically Schiavone gave her some advice about the tour. Maria said that Francesca didn't tell her anything that she hadn't heard before, but that it was special to come from someone who won Roland Garros and is in the top 10 :D

This week she played a 10K in Egypt:
R1: (8) Natela Dzalamidze RUS d. Maria Sakkari GRE 6-1 6-4
Maria just had an unlucky draw . Dzalamidze just won a 10K last week!
Before the match, Maria said that she is playing these 10Ks in Egypt because she wants good competition and she wants to improve. She also said that she is ready to play and that a lot of the other girls here are suffering and she has to watch what she eats and drinks so she doesn't get food poisoning like them.

She is taking next week off and then she is traveling to India for a 10K ;)

Maria played a 10K in India this week:
R1: Sakkari GRE d. (Q) Zhu CHN (#1031) 6-2 6-4
R2: Sekulic GER (#762) d. Sakkari GRE 6-1 6-2
Pretty good week I guess . Maria is younger and higher ranked than Sekulic but Sekulic is only 19 and was in the top 450 before so I guess the loss was pretty expected . I like how Maria is playing a lot of ITFs now but I wish she still played some junior tournaments so she can win more and gain confidence and also it would've been nice to see how she would do in the junior slams :p

After R1, Maria said that playing in India was cool and a good experience because the conditions are tough and she plays with different players since in the European tournaments she plays mostly against European girls but now she is playing against Asian girls so it is different for her ;)

After R2, Maria said that Sekulic played well and didn't allow her to play her game and there was not much she could do

10K Mumbai, India:
R1: Sakkari GRE d. (Q) Kinoshita JPN (#884) 6-4 6-1 :yeah:
R2: (7) Jaksic SRB (#507) d. Sakkari GRE 6-1 1-0 ret. :sad::hug:
After the match, Maria went back to Greece to see her doctor but the injury is not very serious and she should be back soon :)

Also Jaksic ended up winning the title, so it wasn't a bad loss :p

Where has she been? She hasn't played in over a month.

I'm not sure what keeps happening to the Greek girls. They're always disappearing. Do they not understand that when you're young you have to play a lot to get match practice.

I agree with what you're saying but some of the girls like Maria have age restrictions so they can't play as many pro events as they probably want to. But I see no reason why Maria shouldn't be playing juniors. She hasn't played juniors in about a year, and she can do well there and it would be interesting to see how far she could go in the junior rankings. On the other hand, a lot of the Greek girls stop playing because of financial reasons, injuries, or because they don't think they can make the top 100 so they quit. Its a shame. If they all continued to play, we would've had Gerasimou, Georgatou, Kontratevidi, Roussi, and maybe Kipritidiou in GS qualies. Its crazy how much better we could be doing. On top of that, Koumantou was on her way to being a doubles specialist but stopped playing because she just wasn't making money on tour and didn't receive support from he federation. Other than Daniilidou, I can't ever remember a Greek girl playing on tour past the age of 25. Papadaki was 26 and still top 100 before she quit. Fafaliou is turning 26 in November and I honestly can't see her continuing with her injuries because she basically has no shot anymore at beating ranked opponents. And then a lot of the younger girls who could be good top 200/300/400 players just retire. Some have now started to play college tennis in the US which is good because it helps them improve and get a degree at the same time. Kordolaimi made the right choice by doing so since she was an amazing 15 year old but then had so many injuries and was out of the game for about 2 years, and now she is improving in the US and plans on going pro after she graduates in 2015. Some others have just given up and they really should've tried going pro or going to college, I won't waste my time saying names though but for example Eleni Konstantinidou is still just 18 and when she was 17 she beat a player ranked 410 and now she hasn't played in a year . I think they need 10Ks in Greece every week like they do in Turkey. I mean, look how many good and also mediocre Turkish players get to continue their careers in those tournaments. In Greece I heard they are trying to do something similar and they tested it out in Heraklion and they said if the resorts made a profit then they would keep holding these tournaments ;). So I guess we will see what happens in the future.

In other words, a huge problem is $$$$, and even before the crisis the Greek Federation didn't have much money to begin with. And the federation president is an idiot and he is so corrupt and makes it almost impossible for players to make it big. The only reason Eleni made it was because she comes from a wealthy family of dentists. Sakkari (and Markos Kalovelonis) are the biggest hopes for the future not only because they are talented, but also because their parents used to play as Maria's mother was in the top 50 and the best Greek player ever before Eleni, and Markos' father was in the top 150 and also was the Greek Fed and Davis Cup captain for years. Greek tennis, so much wasted talent. And on the mens side Mazarakis, Georgoudas, Kelftakos, Gemouchidis, Mikos, Kapogiannis, Katsigiannakis, Alexiou, Papachristopoulos, Glezos, etc. all were promising but for whatever reason have failed or are currently failing to fulfill their potential

Back to Maria...

I haven't been active here lately, but Maria got up to a career-high of 651 but she's now ranked 687. Here are her recent results:
10K Istanbul:
R1: d. (Q) S.Arantenkin TUR (#947) 6-4 6-2
R2: d. (7) N.Abdala MEX (#556) 6-2 6-1 :yeah:
QF: d. (1) M.Sezer TUR (#382) 6-3 2-6 6-3 :worship::woohoo::aparty: BEST WIN OF HER CAREER SO FAR! :drool:
SF: l. to B.Eraydin TUR (#926) 6-3 6-2 :(
*Great tournament and its good to see that she keeps improving and can compete with higher ranked players. Good tournament but a disappointing finish. I think after she beat Sezer she expected to cruise through the rest of the tournament . Anyways, I think as long as she stays healthy and keeps playing well, she can end the year at least in the top 500. And in about a month, she will turn 17 so she can play more tournaments :D

She then took off 5 weeks and then played 25K Lenzerheide:
QR1: BYE
QR2: d. C.Volejnicek SUI (NR) 6-2 6-1
QR3: l. to (9) Pigossi BRA (#805 WTA,#23 juniors) 6-2 6-2
But got an LL and then R1: l. to Smitkova CZE (#477) 6-2 6-2

This week 25K Rome:
QR1: d. (WC) Crescenzi ITA (NR) 6-1 6-0
FQR: d. (4) Milevskaya BLR (#439) 4-6 6-3 6-2 :woohoo:
R1: l. to (6) Chakhnashvili GEO (#201) 7-5 6-2
*Another great tournament. Milevskaya was a former #1 in juniors and a former WTA #227 and she's on her way up the rankings again, coming back from injury and she's been in pretty good form this year. And Chakhnashvili is a tour veteran who was once ranked as high as 135 in 2008. Great tournament for Maria and she once again has shown how well she can play and how good she is :yeah:. Now I think she should mix up her schedule with 10Ks, 15Ks, and some weaker 25Ks so she can rise up the rankings :)

That's all interesting stuff. I thought that money would play a big part. So has Georgiatou retired then or is she just missing?

These girls really need some help, even Eleni. Her coach situation is dismal, she neds to pay the money and find someone good. I really really want Tony Roach to coach her but that's as unlikely as Gerasimou coming back and winning Roland Garros.

It was a good win from her over Ksyusha, as clay is Ksyusha's best surface, she's in the best form in about 3 years and she has no injuries. Since her near upset of Jani, I have been watching her and she seems to have a lot of potential. If she could maybe play some easier tournaments out of Europe or Juniors she might get her ranking up :)

Despite her serve stats being a bit iffy (only won 46% of points on second serve), her return stats were amazing (76% of points won on first serve return, 86% on second serve). She seems to rise to a higher level when she has to and likes the big events like Fed Cup and WTAs :)

It's a lovely 32 Degrees Celcius and sunny in Italy, so when her match starts at 4PM hopefully she will be ready to go :)

0-6 1-6 against (1) Cabeza-Candela in QR2, but that was expected as Estrella is currently ranked 162, a clay court specialist, and is now through to the quarterfinals of the main draw in Palermo so this is not at all a bad loss for Maria even though it would've been nice if she could've won a few more games ;)

Also she withdrew from the challenger in Romania she was supposed to play next week, so she's probably heading to WTA Bastad instead . And then she isn't signed up for anything the following week, so she'll most likely be at WTA Baku . I think it's cool that she is trying WTA events, even though I think this will be enough for her for now and then she should go back to ITF tournaments :p

I found this article. It's in Greek but I translated it for you guys :)
http://www.espressonews.gr/default.asp?pid=79&la=2&catid=0&artid=1520884&pg=1

The article follows the title of this thread actually. As many of you know, Maria's mother was a great player who reached #43 in the WTA rankings, was a Greek Fed Cup player for years and reached the Olympic QFs as well as the third round of Roland Garros twice.

Maria said here that she is determined to sacrifice a lot for her tennis, such as holidays, times with friends, etc. (good to see that she has her priorities straight!). Maria said that she learned about her mother's tennis career when she was 11 years old. She went to her grandmother's house and saw her mother's trophy and played with it even though she didn't know what it was. Her mother didn't want her children to play professional tennis because she knew how hard it was. Maria then talked about how she is very proud of her mother and her achievements in her career.

Maria's mother was then interviewed and talked about how her family means everything to her. She said that when Maria told her she wanted to be a professional tennis player, she panicked because she knew how hard it was. She said she knows how hard it is for Maria because she also went through that. She said that everyone asks her if Maria is better than she was, but she said its very different because back then they played with wooden rackets, and she was better on clay but Maria is strong and fast (so she plays better on fast surfaces). She admits that back in her playing days sometimes she would skip practices, but Maria is very different because she always practices, wakes up early, runs, and watches her diet. She believes in Maria and thinks that she will be in the top 100 in 3 years. She said that her father (Maria's grandfather) was the first to recognize her talent (he is/was a tennis coach). She also said that the times have changed and now the Greek federation has no money so Maria's family has to cover all of her expenses, but they believe in her.

Sorry for the late reply. I was away for a week. I went to the USO and saw Kontaveit so my report will be posted in the USO forum soon :)

First, Maria beat Kazimova 6-3 6-1, not 0-0 ret. as the ITF site originally said :p

Second, she did play Antalya that week actually and reached the final! And the Greek Championships took place a few weeks ago and Maria did not participate (neither did Daniilidou, Papamichail, or Vogasari). Agni Stefanou won it all so she automatically gets a spot on the Fed Cup team. I guess Maria didn't play since she will probably get a spot anyways especially now that Gerasimou retired and Georgatou is taking a break and Papamichail is in a huge slump. And yes, although Papamichail's fall actually started a few weeks before then, but she is in her first QF of the year this week (albeit a 10K) but she is showing some signs I guess...

I'm not sure about the tournaments in Greece but I will check it out.
EDIT-I just checked. The tournament in Mytilini takes place every year and usually gets good crowds. There isn't much going on on the island of Lesvos in terms of sporting events so everyone there supports that tournament and they have many sponsors. The tournament in Kalamata is new, but they have hosted men's futures in the past. And I didn't notice that about the Heraklion tournament not being hosted at the resort, but there was a tournament at the same club last year that Papamichail won, and they have had some men's futures there too. But the other 3 scheduled futures for this year in Heraklion will all be at the resort. And they also have a club in Heraklion with 3 grass courts that hosted a men's future a while back. That would be pretty cool since grass courts are rare.

Maria won her 1st Round in Antalya 6-2 6-2 :D
She also made her first Pro Final last week before losing to Ana Bogdan in the final 6-3 6-2

WD Maria! Well deserved final :)

And actually it wasn't her first final, as she reached the final of 10K Athens last year ;)
Her progress is good though, she will get a new CHR again higher than 580 but not near top 500 as she has some points to defend. But I think as long as she keeps up her form she can go up as long as she stays focused, especially since she didn't play from the beginning of October until the middle of January :p

In that Antalya tournament where she reached the final, she had some good wins in straight sets over S.Hopper, Bhambri, (4)Al Nabhani, and N.Vajdova! Good work!

Unfortunately this week Maria lost in the 2nd round in Antalya 10K 1-6 3-6 against (3) Eraydin (#417). Hopefully she can rest up a little bit now. She is taking the next two weeks off, and then will play more tournaments in October! Good luck Maria!

Back to Maria, things haven't been going very well lately
As chingching mentioned, she lost in the R16 of 10K Kalamata to Palmigiano (#971), but I actually expected this result because I knew Palmigiano was dangerous and under ranked. But Maria probably had SPs in both sets looking at the scoreline . And her first round win over Irini Papageorgiou was by retirement, which worries me since Irini is only 19 and has had tons of injuries already and then she pulled out of the next few tournaments :scared:

Then she played two 25Ks in Lagos, Nigeria, and she probably expected easy points, but in the end she just wasted her time and travel money, as she probably would've gained more points if she just stayed in Greece

The first one she lost to Rishika Sunkara (IND, #625) 3-6 2-6 :o
Okay, I know Sunkara is ranked higher than Maria so I wasn't 100% certain that Maria would win, but I still expected more of a fight :help:. I mean she couldn't really get a much easier 25K first round (unless she was lucky enough to draw a Nigerian wildcard)

And then the second one was bad too. She lost to (Q) Zarah Razafimahatratra (MAD, NR) 2-6 2-6. It was expected really, as this girl reached e QF the previous week in Lagos, beating two players in the top 550 before taking a set off of #91 Bratchikova in the QF . And then Maria withdrew from her doubles R1 with Tomova, I'm not sure why she never plays doubles . So basically she wasted her time in Nigeria, I just hope she can do well in Heraklion to end her season, but she is on a 3 match losing streak and I think she reached her maximum tournament count because of the age eligibility rules

In all this time she got her ranking up to 568, a new career-high, but now she's back down to 627 :(

R2 l. to (Q) Arabela Fernandez Rabener ESP (#986) 6-7 1-6 :(

It's good to see that she's picked up her form again. The horrendous loss to Boev was scary, but then she played well against Rodionova, beat Shlomo, played a close match against eventual champion Dzalamidze in Netanya, beat Leykina, and lost to Fernandez Rabener, a player making her comeback.

She's gotten her ranking back inside the top 600 to 589 :yeah:
Next up for her will be two 10K's in Heraklion, Crete and then Fed Cup :bounce:

Fed Cup:

Stanciute LTU d. Sakkari 5-7 6-2 6-1
Simmonds RSA d. Sakkari 6-3 6-0
Suomalainen FIN d. Sakkari 6-0 6-2
It's very disappointing that after two years she still hasn't won a match in Fed Cup, but then again all of the girls she played against this year were ranked much higher than her so I should not have expected much from her anyways

Again, she wasn't going to get a better draw at this level and couldn't come close

25K USA:

Currently ranked #626 in singles, but she's losing a lot of points the next few weeks and hasn't signed up for any tournaments. She was probably picked to play the Mediterranean Games since she didn't enter any events. I hope she goes on a tear at the Greek fall ITF events, since there will be over 10 of them :hearts:. And in a few weeks she won't have to worry about age restrictions since she'll turn 18 and can be free to enter as many tournaments as she wants :cheer:

Not surprised to see her change to Babolat as many Prince players have done, especially lower ranked ones. Do you know how you can access the full results for the Mediterranean Games? :)

It really is a shame that she is kinda stalling as I really though by now if she wasn't Top 400 she'd at least be moving forward :(

This isn't really organized though, but also there's a thread in the challenger forum ;)

And yeah, he progress has really stopped and her ranking is going to drop even more now that her Palermo points will come off :(

I think she still has time though. She's still 17, and if she plays a smart schedule with many 10Ks, then she can have a good second half of the season :)
But she always tries to enter bigger events where she can't win matches, it really doesn't make any sense at all :o

10K Turkey:
R1 l. to (Q) Anastasia Mukhametova RUS (#1133) 6-2 6-7(8) 2-6 :help:
Mukhametova actually was a really promising player and then vanished for quite a while so the loss doesn't look that bad, but the scoreline clearly indicates a choke :sobbing:

10K Greece, MYTILINI:
R1 BYE
R2 d. Samantha Powers USA (#1183) 2-6 6-2 6-2
QF d. Angeliki Kairi GRE (#1136) 6-4 6-1
SF d. (8) Ashley Murdock USA (#879) 2-6 6-1 6-3
F l. to (6) Klaartje Liebens BEL (#822) 2-6 1-6
Maria was the top seed here, so it's too bad she couldn't win. It's crazy how she has been in several 10K finals and still hasn't won one. I knew she wouldn't win this one though, Mytilini is the only Greek tournament with some history that has lasted through the economic crisis (it's just a 10K, but still), and Greek girls have won it every even year since it started (Anna Gerasimou in 06, Eirini Georgatou in 08, Despina Papamichail in 10, and Despoina Vogasari in 12), so 2013 meant a foreign girl had to win :p

Maria also played doubles here with BFF Agni Stefanou, but they lost a super tiebreak heartbreaker in the semis

10K Greece, MARATHON:

SF d. (8) Janina Toljan AUT (#648) 6-4 6-7(7) 6-4
F l. to (6) Aminat Kushkova RUS (#594) 0-6 5-7
4th career 10K final, still no titles :(
When is she going to win one finally?????
Also Lost doubles final 10-8 in STB :bigcry:

10K Greece, MARATHON:

I wonder how many MPs she wasted :tape:
Even in the QF she made it so much harder than it had to be, she always does stuff like this

10K Spain:
R1 l. to Aleksandra Zenovka RUS (#975) 6-7(1) 2-6

10K Spain:
R1 d. (Q) Alba Carrillo Marin ESP (NR) 6-3 6-1
R2 d. Ai Wen Zhu CHN (#913) 6-1 6-0
QF d. Ines Ibbou ALG (#967) 6-3 6-3
SF l. to (5) Lisa Sabino SUI (#632) 1-6 1-6
Also reached doubles SF here but had to withdraw because her Spanish partner was injured :tears:

10K Spain:
R1 d. Melanie Stokke NOR (#958) 6-1 6-1
R2 d. Paula Mocete-Talamantes ESP (#1196) 6-0 6-0
QF l. to (5) Leolia Jeanjean FRA (#727) 2-6 4-6

Overall, Maria did a great job to turn around her year. She still has some issues though. She struggles to close out matches and loses too many close sets. She can't win a 10K title, but her raking improved a lot. After hitting rock bottom by having her ranking drop to 796 (Greek #7 at the time), she rebounded very well. Now she's at a career-high of 544. I hope in 2014 she can continue to improve her ranking. She needs to play more tournaments also. It's also good that now she is starting to play more doubles, as it will only help her in the long run.

Not sure, she isn't on any lists yet. She's probably taking some time off since she didn't end her season until December ;)
But I hope she gets some matches in before Fed Cup in February

Same girl she lost to last week, similar score . Mertens was in the top 10 of juniors last season so it's not a bad loss :p

After being 0-9 after two years, Maria finally won her first Fed Cup rubber against Cyprus in Greece's opener today! :cheer:

She beat Maria Siopacha (junior #376) 6-2 7-5 :D

Not the most convincing of wins, but hopefully this will let her play better in future Fed Cup matches now that there is less pressure on her ;)

Let's see what she will do against Moldova on Friday, will be tougher than Cyprus ;)

Maria won her singles against Helbet 6-1 6-2 and lost doubles with Stefanou against Helbet/Porubin 2-6 3-6. They probably didn't care since Greece won anyways and will face Ireland in the promotional playoffs tomorrow ;)

Maria's Fed Cup record is now 2-12 after her failures today
I'm disappointed in her. Obviously there was a lot of pressure for her since Eleni and Despina skipped and because she wants to live up to her mother's career but still this is Group III we're talking about :o

Lost singles to Bowtell (#636) 6-4 3-6 2-6
I'm not that upset about this loss because Bowtell is really good indoors (beat Diatchenko and Bukta a few weeks ago and played a close match against Golubic) and she has more Fed Cup experience and a good and is used to carrying her team.

But then Maria and Valentini lost to Bowtell/Dillon 4-6 3-6, totally unacceptable to lose to such a weak team :o. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Maria needs to play more doubles since they like to use her in Fed Cup. She has at least started to play some doubles from last year but it's not nearly enough.

Maria was seeded 6th at a 10K in Spain. Unfortunately, she lost in the first round 3-6 1-6 to Ekaterina Lopes (Ivanova) RUS (#933, former #136 coming back from injury, playing her first tournament in 8 months)
Really just bad luck with the draw this week
Tough to face someone who not too long ago was in the main draw of Grand Slams ;)

Maria was also seeded 3rd in doubles but lost 5-7 1-6 :(

Just a bad day for her today. Hopefully she gets a better draw in the next Spanish 10K next week

Lopes ended up winning the title last week, so it was really a bad draw for Maria. And in doubles, the team she lost to also went on to win the title :rolls:
So unlucky :(

This week's 10K Spain:
R1: (wc)Aina Schaffner-Riera (ESP) (NR) d. (5)Maria Sakkari (GRE) 75 75 :tape:
That is really bad :o

Week off and then she's playing a 10K in Italy. Hopefully she can get back in form again soon ;)

Apparently Maria's mother was supposed to be a guest on a Greek TV show talking about her daughter on Wednesday, but I didn't see it and don't know what she said

Anyways Maria lost today 6-7(4) 6-4 3-6
Sure Lizarazo is a former top 400 player, but still :(
Also lost in doubles 6-7(5) 3-6 which is really worrying since they played wildcards and Maria's partner is former top 200 singles and current top 200 doubles :o

Oh well, next week she's playing a 10K here again, and then another one the following week...

10K Italy R1 vs. Claudia Giovine ITA (#527, former #257)
Giovine is in good form, so it will be tough, but hopefully that takes the pressure off Maria since she won't be expected to win :p

Her ranking fell to 573 this week, but the good news is that she is only defending 8 points between now and September so a great chance to have a breakthrough soon :bounce:

Seeded 2nd in doubles, playing once again with Ferrer-Suarez (ESP) ;)

Then lost 4-6 5-7 to (8) Martina Caregaro ITA (#458)
Main difference was that Maria converted 3 of 11 break points and her opponent converted 5 of 6 :o
She reached the doubles semis and lost to Papamichail. There's a video of the full match here:

Cute hug at net between Maria and Despina :awww:

Another 10K Italy:
R1 l. to Estelle Cascino FRA (#602) 6-7(1) 0-6 :(
I wonder if she had SP in the first set, probably
Cascino ended up making the final

6-4 4-6 1-6 against Grammatikopoulou in 10K Heraklion R1
Grammatikopoulou now 3-0 against Maria, clearly she is a bad matchup for Maria and also she's younger and ranked higher

But Maria's break point conversion was atrocious once again, 7 for 21 is just unacceptable :tape:

Maria reached the doubles QF with Kairi and lost 10-8 in STB

This week's 10K Heraklion:
R1 vs. Natalia Siedliska POL (#677)
Seeded third in doubles with Papamichail. I believe the last time they played together they lost 7-6(8) in the third in a Fed Cup deciding match in the relegation play-offs . Hopefully this time there's a better outcome for them :)

Finally some good results. If she doesn't win a title this year I have officially given up.

This is starting to get pathetic. I don't understand why she can't win a title. Usually when a player struggles in singles they still have no problems in doubles, but Maria must have an issue with finals because her record is terrible. When I saw she reached the singles and doubles finals here, I thought maybe it was her chance to win one of the titles. Clearly I was wrong. She did the same thing in one of the Greek 10K's last September, losing both finals. It's actually really sad. She played amazing tennis all week long and was handing out bagels and breadsticks to quality opponents and then folded like a cheap tent in her finals. She needs more experience to learn to deal with pressure since she sucks in finals and at Fed Cup.

This tournament was still an encouraging sign because it showed what she is capable of, I just wish she came away with one of the titles. I don't even know anymore how many singles and doubles finals she has lost. She needs to finally win one. I also hope it doesn't affect her in a negative way. Schiavone lost her first 7 finals and eventually won a slam title. Cibulkova also lost a lot of finals at the beginning of her career and this year she reached a slam final. Obviously WTA finals are different than ITF finals, but it's the same concept. Maria is still 18 and has practically nothing to defend until September, so hopefully she can have more good weeks and keep moving up the rankings :bounce:

I'm so happy for Maria. She FINALLY won a title after so many letdowns in finals. I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but hopefully this is a turning point for her and the start of something new and she can really rise up in the rankings the next few months :cheer:

At the end it talks about Maria. He said he coached Maria for 6 years but now she is coached by an Italian. Other than that, he didn't say much else. He said she was very good from a young age, etc.

Maria with her mother:
http://tennisnews.gr/images/Afierwmata/Kanelopoulou/Aggeliki-Maria.jpg

They continued by interviewing Maria's mother Angeliki:
http://tennisnews.gr/net-stories/tn-on-tour/14003-kanelopoulou

It basically focused on her mother's career. When she was 13, she went to train in Florida for a little. That's surprising to me since I'm sure it was very uncommon for a European girl to go do that back then. It's really interesting for those who read Greek. For example she said she never went to the Australian Open because the tickets were too expensive and it was considered the least prestigious of the slams. She beat 14 year-old Steffi Graf. She retired at 25 while ranked 120.

Another interesting thing she mentioned was that the Greek school system used to make it hard for tennis players. She said that under the current system, she could have finished two years earlier and would've been able to spend more time on her tennis and that she would've been able to achieve much more than the top 40, she said maybe even top 20. She also mentioned that when Maria played WTA Palermo in 2012, one of her chair umpires was someone who she had as an umpire during her career

She then talked about Maria and how Maria chose tennis completely on her own. She was very athletic from a young age and she tried many other sports but tennis was her favorite. Her mother even mentioned that she did ballet and it wasn't for her at all but watching Maria's ballet performances would provide many laughs for their entire family :spit:. One of her friends played tennis, so Maria decided to start because of that, at the age of 5.

Angeliki never wanted Maria to play tennis, so it's funny that she chose tennis completely on her own without knowing about her mother's career for most of her childhood (I've read in other articles that her mother tried to hide her career from Maria). When Maria was 11, she played her first national tournament in Lamia and she reached the final. From then on, her family realized that tennis was for her and her mother (I remember reading once that her mother was devastated at first when she found out Maria wanted to play tennis because she knew how hard it was) finally accepted Maria's decision to play tennis and from then on supported her.

This is the link. Maria is on from 1:35:30 until the end ;)

Some highlights:
-She said life in tour is tough with all the traveling

-She started playing tennis at 6. She did other sports like karate, swimming, ballet, and athletics, but tennis was her favorite.

-She said her mother never pushed her to become a tennis player and she chose that sport by herself. She didn't learn about her mothers career until she was 11 years old and people were saying that she was Kanellopoulou's daughter and then she figured it out

-She said that it was tough playing tennis while being in school especially since schools in Greece are known for being very advanced compared to other countries. She said eventually she was able to do school online which helped her balance school and tennis.

-She spoke about how each tennis player has their own routines, etc.

-She said that players from other countries always tell her that they love playing in Heraklion because the weather is great and the Greek food is great.

With her final last week, she breaks into Top 400 for the 1st time this week, and reaches a new CHR of 384 (up 36 spots). :yeah: :bounce:

Actually, her points weren't even added yet. Those were from her 10K title in Serbia. This week her points from Poland were added and her ranking jumped even more, to 320 :cheer:

WOW, what an amazing tournament for her, coming from the qualies!
Now she has won 34 of her last 39 singles matches :worship:

Some TF posters were there in Poland for the tournament and here's what they said about Maria and they compared her to other players:

Sakkari is a mini-Mauresmo. Ver, very fit and also very passionate about the game, she really wants it. She's for sure a player to watch. Solovyeva on the other hand doesn't really seem to be to focused on tennis, her arms definitely didn't seem like arms of a tennis player..
Saw only 1 game of Sasnovich, didn't impress me with her game at all but her body is impressive - very fit but unlike Sakkari, more in a slim than muscled way...
Savic had the most impressive shots out of the players I saw but she lacks Sakkari's fire - she isn't very fit (had some jelly belly) and either hits a winner or an UE's, isn't really keen on finding Plan B.

Sakkari is indeed a mini-Mauresmo - i thought exactly the same, she even has the same way of walking. impressive shots and fighting spirit, quite emotional on court.

It started raining after a reasonably competitive first set so they moved the match indoors on a hard court. Maria stood no chance in the 2nd :/

I don't get the comparison with Mauresmo at all though. :spit: :haha: She hits a double-handed backhand, and the single-handed backhand pretty much was Mauresmo's trademark. She much more reminds me of a Wickmayer for instance: aggressive but not so powerful, lots of fire and desire to win, emotional... Just my opinion.

I think the Mauresmo comparisons are more because of her competitiveness and the way she walks, and maybe also her dark blonde hair color

Interesting comparison with Wickmayer, I definitely see it. I can also see it with Cibulkova because of the grunt and the firepower . Also a little bit Cornet because Maria is very emotional and can get to balls that are hard to reach and play scrappy like Cornet when she needs to but can also be aggressive and hit winners like Cibulkova ;)

That's a really good win for her, and another title, just awesome :cheer:

She has also been doing great in doubles
They won the semis 6-1 6-0 and then beat (3) Laine FIN/Pivovarova RUS (both former top 100 players) 6-2 6-3 in the final :aparty:

Saw these in the tournament thread :
Did not see much of Angelikis matches, she seemed to be a great fighter and used a lot of dropshots, 1st serve ok, 2nd serve not so, FH worked pretty well, quite slightly build girl :)

Maria Sakkari is destined for at least Top50 IMO, powerful 1st serve, good 2nd serve, hits strong from both sides, moves well and is very athletic, like a new version of Amelie Mauresmo but with 2handed BH ;)

 Lets not get too exited when someone is destroying 10K fields. Just three weeks ago Krejcikova (WTA 233) handled her like a used toy :tape: Sure, she has talent and plays bit better than her ranking. But Top 50? There are only handfull of teens that deserve to be mensioned as such. When saying at least Top 50, we are talking of Bencic, Konjuh, Vekic and Ostapenko. Not Sakkari.

Hope you are right though :wavey:

Huge crowds for a $10K

R2 d. Laura Gulbe LAT (#1221) 6-0 6-0
QF d. (8) Diana Bogoliy UKR (#904) 6-3 6-3
SF d. Eveliina Virtanen SWE (NR) 7-6(2) 6-2
F l. to (4) Emma Laine FIN (#786, former top 50) 3-6 7-5 0-6
Too bad that she couldn't win it all, but she must have been tired. She wasn't losing games the first two matches and then played opponents with similar rankings and was losing more games. Also in the final I expected her to lose since she was playing a former top 50 player from Finland in Finland. The third set bagel just shows probably how tired she was

Maria also played doubles but lost the final 4-6 6-7(2) to (2) Bogoliy UKR/Laine FIN. Not a bad loss once again since she played Laine and must have been tired obviously. I wonder if she would've had more energy for singles if she skipped doubles this week (the doubles final was played the day before the singles final) :p

Anyways, Maria is up to another career-high, 298! :worship:
She has won 43 of her last 49 singles matches :worship:
