Thank you Vika :hearts:

Sam started the match with a love hold. Didn't get a game until 3-1 in the 2nd set. Match ended with Vika breaking when Sam was up 40-0.

Straight up pain bringing the whole tourney :)

PID is putting more on her forehand, significantly more than Australia. More body rotation, more of her weight into the shot, less arm. It's now a pretty respectable strike in its own right. Amazing what confidence can do to you.

Shanksur stood no chance. It doesn't really matter, backhand or forehand, she can't deal when she's rushed consistently like that.

Stosur was dismal.

Shanking shots, rushing shots, not dealing with the wind, UE's, blowing easy opportunities, then she mentally quit. It just wasn't Azarenka. She played well to me. But nothing spectacular worthy of the score.

But the Old Stosur (3-11 in finals) showed up after the first service game. Shankstur indeed!

Congrats to Vika.

She should, but then I heard yesterday that Tiger Woods was paid an appearance fee of 2.5 million dollars for Abu Dhabi. Obviously Azarenka is no Tiger, but who knows what kind of gifts are in these little bags. It would suck for the streak, but maybe she can allow Kuznestova or Hantuchova to hit her off the court early and bag the gift bag. :p

Tournaments know no one cares about the "stars" of the present. Legend is kind of enough to show up, it's her own way of trying to save the WTA. Nonetheless, well played Azarenka, and again it's good to see someone not bringing the #1 spot into disrepute for a change :yeah: I really hope she plays Dubai, I'm dying to see a match between her and Petra... wouldn't mind seeing her finally shutting up the ignornats who illogically believe Wozniacki is a bad match-up for her either.

Expected result for Stosur, it's obviously a hellish match-up for her at the best of times, never mind on a super-windy day when the ball would be shifting inches just in the duration of her backswing on the forehand. Still a good effort this week though and setting herself up nicely to be a major contender at RG ... will she be ranked ahead of Wozniacki yet? If not, is anyone seriously going to try and claim Wozniacki has done better in the past 12 months than her? :tape:

i know you'll disagree with this but those stats above are exactly what i meant.
in a match where she won only 3 games (and got thoroughly crushed) sam still ends up with more winners. it's vika's consistent, error-minimized game that wins her so many matches - you see that in her 8 unforced and i bet the count for sam's forced errors is high too (prob b/c vika was returning so well today). of course, it helped that sam was completely mia (25 unforced).

look at my avatar - i'm a vika/petra fan. this is not a slight to my fave. it's just how i see her game as a spectator/fan. it doesn't mean i haven't enjoyed her kick ass all year. i'm sure we can find a respectful way to disagree on this.

There is no point to argue with him. If you watched that match and honestly want to argue that Stosur had any say at all in how this match went (because of some winner and unforced errors stats, btw based on the judgement by one person) then you are a complete tool.

What is an UE on Stosurs backhand anyway? Somebody please define that for me. If hypothetically Wozniacki´s defensive backhand package is a 100, and Sam´s defensive backhand package is a 10. So what if Azarenka hits a 70 shot to Stosur´s backhand. Is that an UE, because Wozniacki returns it or a forced error, because Stosur´s is a 10.

Just watch the matches with your own eyes.

i looked at the match stats - sam's 25 unforced errors accounted for 45% of vika's total pts. on the contrary, vika's 8 accounts for only 24% of pts sam won. of course this was a major beatdown, but i'm comfortable saying sam half beat herself out there.

I have nothing against you. ;) Well I'm sorry if my first remark and the preceding ones were rough --

It's time people understand that tennis is not ALL about winners and winners is not the metric to being a better player.

It's because she doesn't hit 30 winners per match in average that she's weaponless.

For that matter I bet you didn't even know that Li Na for example in her last 69 matches she played in majors stoke 22.99 winners in average to Vika's 20.05 in her 67 matches played.

So again if I use your logic, Li is 2.94 winners better than Victoria ? She has 2.94 better weapons ? That makes no sense -- I wished you took knowledge of the data. Probably I'll make a thread about it one of these days where you'll be able to argue and see for yourself. :)

You can also say those stats show Vika was dictating the match and forcing Sam to hit big on every point. A weapon isn't a weapon if it's not working consistently, and if you're hitting more UE than winners, you're not consistent.

I was never really a fan, but after really watching Vika composure during the AO, especially her match against Kim and following her matches more closely now I'm falling in love with what I'm seeing.

She's not panicking even when she allows her opponent back in the match a little, she just steps up and slams the door.

Watching her kill Sam today was even more rewarding. Especially since Sam bores me to death.

i looked at the match stats - sam's 25 unforced errors accounted for 45% of vika's total pts. on the contrary, vika's 8 accounts for only 24% of pts sam won. of course this was a major beatdown, but i'm comfortable saying sam half beat herself out there.

Ok since you wanna go in calculations let's see :

Vika 14 winners and 8 UE's, Stosur 16 winners and 25 UE's. 90 points were played out there :

Sammy won 34 of the 90 and Victoria 56 of the 90. Yeah, Stosur Ue's factored for 27.7% of the match and for 46.2% of Victoria's points but your argument does not stand for the reason that --

Victoria forced 17 errors for 10 for Stosur which 18.8% of the 90 points played adding that up with her winners, her game factored 34.4% in the match for 26.6% for Samantha Stosur so how are you right that Sammy beat herself out there when almost 34% of the points were a issued from Vika's own shot-making

If we come from the principle that forced errors is the metric for 'controlled aggressive' tennis then how did Sotsur defeat herself since Victoria's game (taking the ball early, ROs etc...) overall factored more off the ground for her than for Stosur ? That makes no sense.

Another thing is Victoria won a bigger margin of points with her aggressive game than Stosur did 23 for 1 so I fear to not understand your logic at all. Add : I'm not saying Stosur wasn't bad but to make it seem like Victoria had nothing to do with it is nonsense, 31 shots won through aggression (forced and winner) to 24 for Stosur.

Just too easy for Vika. She wasn't moving too well when she had to run to her forehand side, but her consistently deep shots down the middle didn't give Stosur any opportunities.

Hopefully no Dubai now :)

Well done to Vika! :worship:

She's shaping up to be the first worthy holder of the No 1 ranking since the time Justine or Serena wore the crown. Certainly she seems the first player since Justine 07 who seems serious about winning both slams and WTA Tour events. Losing 18 games in five matches in an event of this calibre is domination a la Graf.

She has improved so much in such a short time - compare this Vika to the Wimbledon semi-finalist or the YEC finalist and she is just heaps better. Her game just seems to have gained added dimensions; one of the things I enjoy about watching this new Vika is that she is such a thinking player, you can see her dictating play and manipulating her opponent into error, she makes GS champions like Sharapova and Stosur look like fools on the court.

She has always done that. She still struggles with players who maintain consistent pace coupled with tactical play. I'm waiting to see that kind of matchup.

Amazing how impotent Stosur looks in this match-up. Azarenka wasn't even that great. Apart from the mental advantage she has from all her wins over SS, it is just so easy. Direct the first few balls in a rally to the backhand at a nice length (pace is irrelevant, because this is the Stosur backhand after all), then just as Stosur is starting to panic, go to the forehand and a shank or a short ball is the obvious result.

Also, Stosur just has no clue how to deal with players who can return her predictable kick to the backhand. Cannot think of any wins she has had when she is being dominated at the start but finds a way to turn the tide (except that win over Justine at RG :smash:, though again Justine 2.0 was awful in return games).

Azarenka has time now to work on the slice, net play etc., which will be sorely needed when facing the likes of Kvitova and Clijsters (if at all) and Li Na playing well. Hard to say how well she really is playing unless she plays a really big hitter (in good form) she struggles against.

Azarenka wasn't even that great.

I disagree. Her forehand had the most bite I've seen from it, in terms of both pace and depth. It has always been a fluff hit mostly from the arm, even in Australia, but now she could take advantage of space even when she's still at the baseline. It would be interesting to see if it can hold on, or if it will be more error prone. With that in her game, Stosur had zero chance.

It was amazing how much of this was mental, all in Sam's head. Her forehand and serve were no where near what she had yesterday.

Vika played her game well, great early returns but other than that nothing new or spectacular, she just hit the ball consistently in the court, something that Sam had trouble doing. So much difference confidence does to one's game.

Thanks for the link to the ceremony. No congrats to Vika from Sam in the speech?

I hope Serena and Petra makes her cry again....

That's funny.

If Petra or Serena beats her again after all this, trust me she will cry again. No doubt.

I'm not sold on Vika's new found mental stability. Not yet. I think it's tenuous.

To be honest, Petra took a lot of pressure off of her by being the 1st Generation suck player to win a major. Then Petra had all the publicity at the beginning of the year for number one, and Vika just kinda slid right in practically unnoticed. Woz also faced a lot of pressure/scrutiny with her major suckage, as well (while Vika was doing her thing).

So despite the win streak, Vika's not under any pressure at the moment. Because the press still has a wait and see attitude about her. But you're right. A beat down by one of her nemesis, may be what it takes to put her off into a confidence or emotional tail spin?

Certainly not a guarantee. But we'll see? She's dealt with it, and handled herself great so far. Kudos to her!

I hate vika's game. So dull to watch and so little risk and variation, I would rather watch wozniacki. She has good net play...which I never see her use and her power is slightly overrated. She just rallies until she sees an opening, and I find it so tedious, and no, I am not a delusioned petra fan and will never get to like her game. So when I say what I am about to say, I just want to undeline, I am not a fan

She is what this game needs and I think she is going to give a big boost to the popularity of the WTA. A lot of people don't watch early rounds, where in my opinion she really likes to push, so they will never see her most boring side of her game, but she is a billion times more fun to watch than nadal ferrer, and even djokovic and as she can easily get the ball back over the net, she forces the opponent to play at a much higher level than usual if they want to win.

Anyway, Stosur I am proud you have finally started your season. I expect now to have a good clay court season.

Well an interesting post. As I have watched tennis now more or less since the early 1990s, I can say that this has happened before, and hopefully it will happen again.

That is, the solid player usually will get to number 1 first, stay there for a while, then the more talented (even much more talented player) of the same age, will get to number 1 and stay there for much longer. Jim Courier got to number 1 for a year in 1992 after winning a couple of slams including the Aussie twice and French twice, but once Sampras got his act together, that was the end of Courier as number 1. In fact, Courier really fell down the rankings, every time he met Sampras in a quarter, semi or final of a slam, he lost despite putting up great fights, Sampras had more variety and in the end it got to Courier.

Ten years later, the same happened again, this time it was Hewitt who was number 1 in 2002, Federer got his act together in 2003 and that was the end of Hewitt, every time they met in slams Federer won and Hewitt went downhill. In fact, before Federer got his game together, Hewitt kept beating Federer in big matches.

Now, I wonder if Kvitova will do the same to Azarenka and Wozniacki eventually? Usually, it takes longer for the more talented player with major weapons to get to number 1. However, once they get it together and get to number 1, they stay there much longer than the solid player. Having read about the Evert / Navratilova rivalry, it took Martina much longer to get to number 1, but then had Evert's number in many of the big matches once she got her mind and fitness going. We will see what happens over the next 18 months, should be interesting.

It's a 2.000.000 $ tournament : a pretty big one, I'd say... Still doubt it would be wise to play Dubai when she's not 100% and has to defend soon her Miami title.

Clueless. No plan B. You can say the same about Sharapova and Radswanka when they faced Vika. Just shows how dominant and untouchable she is right now.

Say whatever you want about Sam, she's had a really good week. Remember she came into this tournament on the back of a disastrous Australian swing of round 1 and 2 exits. Her team would have been happy with a QF. She made the final and lost to the most in-form player of the moment (and someone she had never taken a set off). She can be upbeat about getting some confidence back ahead of Indian Wells and Miami.

Yeah....Sam is very boring to watch cause she doesn't shriek; she is not being dramatic over little things; she is treating all the ball girls/boys and umpires with respect; she doesn't do victory dance after winning matches....

There's more pressure on Sam now. She's not just some top 15 player who managed to make a big final and got slaughtered. She's an established player now and needs to start playing like it. This whole mantra of "She can be build on this confidence" is a load of crap. She had a soft draw going into this final and her performance in the final was anything but confidence building.

A very poor match, nearly unwatchable, Queen Shanksur being almost solely the one to blame for it.

I hadn't seen any of Stosur's matches before the final; I knew she had struggled through a somewhat easy draw and probably wasn't playing her best yet, but I didn't expect it to be this bad (her blowout YEC loss to Toria regardless). Stosur just can't handle Toria's depth of shot. Fumbled a shitload of routine groundstrokes, and was completely unable to keep herself in rallies throughout - Toria's rallying tempo is quick indeed, but Stosur's footwork just isn't up to the task.

Since when did you turn into the supreme custodian of the Azarenka honor?

And the only players who won sets against her this season were Li and Clijsters (Aga won't win with Vika even as Moon Princess). Li is just Li, and Kim is half retired and half injured, but still they're the only players who had chance against Vika.

I hope she will play on the same level as she plays now against Serena, Kim and Li, when they finally decide to play.

She's a confidence player. Get on a roll, no matter who the opponents are, and she will build on it. Put pressure on herself, like she did in Australia, and she will lose to anyone.

You are here to criticize, and that's perfectly OK for a forum poster. But what players need around them are people who will inspire, encourage, highlight the positives and believe in their abilities - things you call a "load of crap". Please don't become a teacher.

But she's still 3-11 in Finals during her career. So it's a "What Came First, The Chicken Or The Egg Thing?"

I don't bring this up to embarrass Sam. But more to add some levity to the disappointment many of her fans are expressing, with out remembering her career finals record. But I would agree, she looked good in the match preceding Vika. I for one, thought she had a good chance of winning today, based off of that match.

I don't give 2 squirts of duck shit about her or her career, this is all just my opinion but any coach or player that is satisfied with getting brutalized in a final has a few screws loose. You can try and take small positives for so long before you have to realize a player isn't fulfilling their potential and it's time for a change of some sort.

Yeah, it seems like when Vika demolishes someone else it's because Vika is playing so well, but when she demolishes Sam, it's because Sam sucks so bad. It's funny that so many people on this thread get so defensive of Vika when anyone dare say that Sam's bad play was a contributing factor in this match, as if saying that is somehow disrespecting Vika. But as usual, it's not only okay, but outright encouraged, to bash Sam. I am not surprised though; GM seems to be filled with people who have the maturity of a 12 year old. Once someone starts throwing out the word "haterz" and other 12 year old kid lingo, it's pretty much a clue that anything they say should just not be taken seriously. I really expected more from this board when I signed up. Given the immaturity and drama here, it seems more like I would imagine a Kardashian sisters fan board to be.
