View Full Version : What is the most boring WTA tournament?

The Kaz
Feb 18th, 2012, 02:40 AM
I think it's Memphis :o

The field is always the same. Petrova and her Indoor specialists friends ranked 50-150.
Random location and surface with no meaning purpose as either a prestigous event in its own right or as a meaning warm-up.
Always on a week with 2 other tournaments.

Yeah, Memphis is pretty dull.

Although Quebec City is pretty much the same thing so I can't really hate on poor little Tennessee.
Bogota is just a hot, hot mess.

That what makes it interesting

Up until the past two years Memphis had been able to draw a big name or two to add some intrigue to it, they've just been unable to do it the past two years.

Sharapova won in 2010. Azarenka/Wozniacki final in 2009. Davenport in 2008. Venus in 2007.

The most boring for me are the clay court MMs after Wimbledon. After getting spoiled with a couple months of fantastic tennis, I can't be bothered to even pay attention to those.

Definitely not Memphis. :o For an International, I don't think many other tournaments can boast Venus, Davenport, Sharapova and Azarenka as former champions. Plus it's a fast surface and it attracts a lot of players who are probably top-50 on quick courts.

What about those boring Asian MMs at the end of the year - Seoul, Guangzhou and Osaka. They don't seem to lead anywhere, they just seem to be on the calendar for the sake of it. Just a total zzzzzzzzzz.

And not exactly thrilled by Baku and Tashkent, although I must say I love the headdress and other outfit that the Tashkent winner has to wear. :hearts:

this:lol: Totally useless and meaningless events for all those, who are always hunting for scraps after the big party...and I don't get the hate for Memphis - at least it has a nice history and some big names, who won this indoor event.

I actually like the clay MMs in the summer and will stick up for them and for Memphis too - the fact is the tour needs more indoor tennis and more outdoor clay to counterbalance the boring prevalence of outdoor hard courts.

I think the dullness of a tourney depends on a few factors....if they have poor coverage (no scores, no live streams...) lack of dramatic matches, and also depends on if our faves play the tourney too.

Personally, I love Tashkent and Baku....I have faves at both tournies, so they are pretty interesting for me....the Uzbek headdresses are a definate bonus too :hearts: ;)

There are other torunies which I never seem to notice in the year...Memphis, Monterray, Bogota etc....and others like Moscow, which I expect to be exciting but come across as dull for some unknown reason :o I also agree about the useless clay MM's after Wimbledon...they just seem a bit 'random' :help:

Osaka was a nice tournament with Bartoli and Stosur in the final.
But Guangzhou....

all the poorly attended, clay, MM international tournaments that give out far too many ranking points. this is also a hugely boring part of the mens tour all their useless clay MM tournaments.

no top 10 players on the womens tour would ever been seen dead at the clay MM tournaments.

I actually like the smaller International events like Fes, Bad Gastein, etc.

These events give chances to new, young and upcoming players to win titles and get match experience with veterans, and allow veteran players to add to their trophy cabinet.

Moscow disguises itself as a prestigious tournament but it's even worse than some of those MMs. Even the finalists nowadays are an embarrassment in disguise (Dominika and Kanepi anyone?)

But yeah, that shit that is played after Wimbledon is hilarious. All of the 2nd tier vultures hungry off their 2nd round losses at Wimbledon.

Well I like indoor Tennis, so Memphis is definitely not the worst one in my book :) And I absolute love Québec City. It produces a bit random winners, but the surface is unique on the calendar and Québec is a very nice city :) I also like the post Wimbly MMs, well like is exaggerated, but I have nothing against them. But it's basically a question of location. For me it's nice to see Tennis from Italy, Austria, Hungary and Sweden.

On the other hand I really don't like the Asian Tournaments, doesn't matter if Guangzhou or Beijing. I'm still not over the fact that the European indoor string was destroyed for these Tournaments. No atmosphere at all and the real top players obviously don't care about them. Tokyo was MUCH better when it was indoors in January.

I hate moscow the most. Such a slow court.

It's a disgrace what happened to this Tournament. In my book is was the least interesting indoor event anyway back when we had a real indoor swing. However, since most of these Tournament have been cancelled or downgraded, this event really became more important in my book. However, I really can't deal with the recent change of surface. They basically castrate indoor Tennis.

Guangzhou is a pretty bad tournament with a poor field, which can only mean poor attendance. Hope they can fork out some cash for a few bigger names to go in the future (will they be hosting it in the Asian Games venue? That might help), but right now it is a disgrace.

Seoul has tended to be one of the strongest International events after Wimbledon for a few years now, occasionally attracts big names (Sharapova and Venus have both won it), and sometimes has interesting characters winning it (Kimiko, for instance!). Osaka often attracts good players (usually Marion, Sam, Fran and co.) so it is certainly not the worst.

Beijing. Ugly stadium, the smog (sometimes you can barely see the ball), no crowd. This instead of Stuttgart or Zurich ? I don't think so !

Definitely Copenhagen as it just gives Pushniacki a free title everytime, and the post Wimby MMs(except Baku).

Beijing follows closely as it is just another redundant tournament on the calendar that few players care about. It has poor qualities for a PM event, evident from last year where it had worse fields and worse matches than premiers such as Paris and Stanford. However, having said that, the whole Asian swing is just bad every year. It is not motivational at all for the elite players and can be done away with. The calendar year should end right after the USO with Istanbul and Bali held 2-3 weeks after.

The boredom is caused by bunch of players which sucks. It's not like in WTA we have 200 players which can play good enough to interest audience. In ATP even 2 players outside TOP100 can easily play match which entertain viewers.

And we all know how interesting are matches between 2 players which are not in TOP75.
