hi,

i am new to the sport, but i like it. i know there was a nrl thread in the past, but it died, so whatever. therefore, i am starting a new thread right ahead of the world club chanllenge. who deserves to win it more, leeds or manly?

The NRL competition is head and shoulders above super league, even if I don't like Manly...I'm still expecting them to win.

I'm not crazy about the bunnies. I'll go for canterbury, newcastle, gold coast, penrith, cronulla and canberra. I don't really have a favourite, I just have teams I like and teams I don't

Warriors should be interesting this year, I've never seen them back-up a good year...however their team is very young and very talented...Shaun Johnson is going to be a top class player.

i guess now that i have some basic understanding of the game the next step would be to discover which teams and players to follow. following a sport without having faves is boring.

i saw the wigan vs leeds game on saturday and leeds were totally outplayed, so i guess manly are the favourites in the world club challenge. btw, how prestigious is that title?

Does this have to be a thread exclusively about League or can we talk about rugby as well? It's just because I haven't seen any threads about the latter and it's the only kind of rugby I watch.

azdaja
Feb 13th, 2012, 01:33 PM
well, i don't mind it. i watch both codes, i even watch sevens sometimes, but usually only international matches. i don't know how many people on tennisforum follow rugby and it might make sense to have fans of both codes in one place.

The world cup challenge? Not very, Manly will be using it as a warm-up and game-time for the NRL season.

Hmm. Melbourne have the 'big three', but their roster looks like it is lacking some depth. However, if Cronk/Slater/Smith are firing it may not even matter.

i will use this thread to comment on rugby union competitions as well and anyone who wants to join should feel free to do so.

i will be following league mostly, though. i hope the scheduling of nrl will be alright for me or i will be stuck with super league only. and anway, given that this will be the first season that i will follow this competition, anyone care to make a little preview over next 2 weeks. how do you expect clubs to do, who will be key players?

Leeds 26:12 Manly
:oh:

it was much closer than the end result suggests. manly put on a lot of pressure on leeds after the break but early pressure from leeds paid off.

Dani12

 I guess it is hard for a team to go over into the English winter, still :oh: Also looking at Manly's other pre-season results, they lost 6-38 to Cronulla...it could be a tough year for them.

rugby may be on tv all the time in australia but in europe it's not very popular outside of the british isles and france and it's far behind football even there. and when i say rugby i mean union, league is even less known. i watched the leeds vs manly game in a pub and i think i was the only one in the room who knew what was going on. i know smaller leagues have been established in some countries, but super league is the only european league i can see on tv, so regardless of what australians think about its quality it's good to have it.

Hopefully Canberra can have an improved year they were very disappointing last season. It was great to see them do well in 2010 - it reminded me of the glory days for the Raiders (1990s).

that was hardly a choke. they barely managed to get the lead anyway. the friday's super league contained some epic choking from st hellens, though. they were 12 points in the lead at half-time, 18 midway through the second half, they were the favourites on paper as well. yet they lost.

This first game should be really interesting. Wayne Bennetts/Darius Boyds old club against their current club, Illawarra have been a powerhouse with Bennett over the last few years, so it'll be interesting to see if they can remain near the top. Also i'll be waiting to see what Bennett can do for Newcastle, who are the short priced favourite to win this game.

Highlanders vs Crusaders this weekend in Dunedin!

YEA BOI!

Btw Roosters are apparently singing on Sonny Bill Williams back, good riddance, that fuckwit doesn't know if he's a mediocre Union Player or a "Championship" Boxer.

His games more credited to the other code anyway.

Dani12
Mar 1st, 2012, 01:06 PM
Epic opener, Dragons beat Newcastle 15-14. I'd back Soward in a golden point situation any day.

Also re SBW, as you said his game is much more more suited to league. A NZ team with SBW and Marshall could really give Australia a shake.

azdaja
Mar 1st, 2012, 02:50 PM
i didn't realise nrl uses a sudden death rule to determine a winner. super league games end in a draw after 80 minutes.

i actually caught some of the game on stream at work :oh: including the winning drop kick goal. and of course it makes sense to try a drop kick in a situation like that.

There's always a lot of crap stirred at the start of the NRL season about players who could be switching codes to league and nearly always they're false. Admittedly, I wouldn't be surprised if Money Bill eventually goes back, but I think that NZRU will do all they can to stop that happening as he's such a crowd-puller.

Apparently there's rumours about Quade switching, too.

Why some teams refuse to play wet weather rugby is beyond me. It seems simple, keep the ball under your arm, gain metres and complete sets. But no, teams still wants to throw the ball around..

Anyway, I have no idea why Gold Coast are tipped to be wooden spooners, they have a good team. They just didn't come together last year, they have a lot of potential if they can mesh.

i may be the only one following the super league here, but after the bradford vs warrington game i gotta say: i don't know (yet) the name of that warrington player who should have been sent off if the refs had not been half-blind, but that **** is officially the first rugby league player on my shit list  throwing yourself elbow first on the player you have just brought to the ground is simply disgusting.

^ Thug behaviour seems to happen fairly often in rugby :( Topping my thug list for this round is Justin Hodges. Totally uncalled for, unecessary shove on a player that had nothing to do with the play.

Anyway first round of NRL is nearly over. Hard to tell which team will look to be heading the pack with the bad conditions this weekend. Brisbane to me looked pretty strong. The next few weeks will give us a better indication. Go away rain!

Also I would probably watch more Super league if it were available just 'cause I'm a rugby nutter, but the thing that annoys me about super league is that 30, 40+ scorelines seem like the norm...the defence is just woeful.

azdaja
Mar 5th, 2012, 11:44 AM
epic choke from rabbitohs. they had a 20:12 lead with just 3 minutes to go only to lose 20:24.

also, yesterday france and ireland played to a draw in 6 nations. epic drop kick fail prevented france from snatching a win.

^ Thug behaviour seems to happen fairly often in rugby :( Topping my thug list for this round is Justin Hodges. Totally uncalled for, unecessary shove on a player that had nothing to do with the play.
i think such behaviour should be sanctioned and sanctioned hard. as should any dangerous play.

well, you know rugby better than i do so i won't argue with that. my impression is that some of the teams are just useless (e.g. widnes losing 6:66 to huddersfield :help: ). most 30+ points games are blowouts involving 3 or 4 such teams.

cronulla beat manly again, this time 17:14  i was able to comfortably watch the last 10 minutes on stream and the finish was dramatic. i thought the last 2 manly tries were quite spectacular but they came too late in the end.

can't comment on which teams are worth hating on, can't tell which players are among the best and i'm glad i didn't see that yow yeh's injury (read about it and it sounded horrible). but this was a huge rugby weekend. apart from regular league and union competitions there was also sevens world series. fiji beat new zealand in the final which i saw and thought it was very entertaining. the olympic games are reacher for a cool game from 2016 even though i wish a league-based competition would get as much recognition as well.

i got my friends into the game as well :oh: not just watching, but also playing touch rugby based on league rules this weekend for the first time  it was fun.

Huntress55

Parra finally win, beat Manly 29-20 :oh:

I didn't see the whole game, but I imagine it isn't a total coincidence that this win coincides with Hayne's return. He projects such confidence and of course is a great player.

I'm totally surprised the Roosters beat NZ. I thought NZ were going to be very tough to beat this year, they are just so-so this year so far.

Also good 1 point win for Cronulla over Penrith, they have been the bottom feeders in the last few years so it is nice to see them getting some wins :)

He played okay but I dont think he deserved MOM. Seriously this guy is so overhyped atm. He is a great player but he hasnt shown enough of that lately. He does maybe one or two great things a game, and then kind of just plays casual. Hes better than alot of players but compare him to Slater, now Slater is truly magnificent player. He's on fire atm.

Happy Broncos won, but the score should have been alot bigger. Credit to the Tigers for hanging in there.

i will be off to a big birthday party which could last long, so i guess i won't be up early enough :oh: i don't really get the origin concept yet.

anyway, i just saw the super league game between wakefield and salford city which proved to be entertaining in the sense that salford were totally outplayed for most of the match and still nearly won or at least equalised literally in the last seconds (after scoring 2 tries in the last 5 minutes).

this sport needs to grow more internationally. that would bring more televised games.

Huntress55
May 23rd, 2012, 02:42 PM
From the first look I thought GI knocked the ball on, wouldnt matter anyways if the game played out as it was, still would have been 12-10. When they showed the replays thought I thought RF played at the ball, which dislodged it from GI which means he was well within his rights to recollect it and ground it. I mean RF was clearly kicking his foot out in hope of knocking the ball or GI(which would be illegal but I think it was obviously more at the ball) which means he did play at it. Yeah it was a crucial call but thats how it goes. ALso with the whole brawl thing I the NSW halfback also threw punches but didnt get in trouble and Lewis also came running in. However he didnt throw punches.

It was a good game though. NSW played well and got the ball rolling and then I felt QLD settled better. I really thought Tate should have got MOM. He went forwards when our forwards werent going anywhere, he also took some crucial bombs and made some great breaks.

Dani12
May 23rd, 2012, 03:52 PM
I think saying just because it was 12-10 it doesn't matter is a bit naive. Inglis gets the green light and QLD gets the ball back as opposed to Inglis getting no try and NSW getting the ball.

Also you saying RF was clearly kicking the ball has to be a joke right? His leg didn't swing at all and he was in a tackle motion. None of that adds up to a kicking action. It should have been a knock on, Greg Inglis lost it cold, any other time a limb coming into another player knocking the ball out of their hands is still a knock on, the attacking player needs to keep a grip on the ball, those are just the facts.

Also that penalty the QLD got before their second try was hilarious too. QLD did a similar tackle later in the match and nothing.

Anyway, I don't want to dwell or be sour grapes  QLD won and no one can take that away from them, sometimes the better team loses.

Dani12

SO RF stuck his foot out for the hell of it? Ok sure lets roll with that. Harrigan said it best in press ... RF was deemed to dislodge the ball with his foot it REBOUNDED (so no knocked on because GI didnt play at it) off GIs arm so the ball was live on the ground which means GI was within his rights to ground it. Doesnt matter if you agree thats the rules the refs went by. Both Mal and Cam pretty much said the same things too.

NSW tries came from sloppy attempts at taking kicks. Slater was not himself and made mistakes, NSW were lucky. QLDs first two tries were from great attacking plays. Although I thought some of the QLD players really need to pick up their act in the second game. Tate was awesome though, really thought he should have got MOM.

Bird penalty was ridiculous. That was a good hard tackle and should have been play on.

Oh and how about Hayne punching Thurston in the face? But then again its Hayne cant expect anything else. Not like it impacted the game but it was cheap from Hayne. He had a decent game though.
As for the fight. Jennings clearly came running in a threw a punch, didnt really need to do that. Happy he was binned but I could have lived with it if they had of just placed him on report or something.

I just hate that a good game was overshadowed by all this complaining. I hate it when QLD do it too. Im hoping game 2 is a game with great footy and thats all thats talked about.

Dani12
May 24th, 2012, 07:27 AM
Hahah. Yeah he did, he was running to make the tackle, you have to put one foot forward to run. Anyway, I'd be fine with ALL referee decisions just as long as they were consistent, I've seen millions of those situations given a no try.

Anyway, doesn't change the result. It is what it is. ;)

there have been some other good games over the past few weeks, though. i feel disappointed with huddersfield since they seem to be losing almost every time. the only game i was able to see in recent weeks was the challenge cup last sunday and i can't say they were really and truely bad but there were some expensive errors and there was not that urgency and confidence that i saw earlier in the season. to be fair, i didn't see any other game during their "slump".

Manly must be, by far, the easiest team to support. When does a call EVER go agains them? Every little fifty/fifty, even every little 20/80 goes there way, EVERY time.

I know the Warriors should have won this one though. First team in history of NRL to blow 18-0 leads in consecutive weeks.

Origin fucked this year up more than ever. Both te Broncos and Storm were flying and Origin screwed them around. You look at a team like the Dogs and Rabbits who had 1 player out each and they have come through at the top. Hardly fair in my eyes. Those teams should be compensated for having, in the Broncos case, 7 players out in Game 3.

Yep. We had alot of rep players this year, it sucked. But it was also injuries too. We've had a few backline players out. Last week we had Reed, Hodges, Copley & Hoffman (Ill leave Yow Yeh out because he's been gone all year really).

Broncos really have to wake up. It needs to start this week with the Raiders because we have a very tough few games leading into the finals (if we make it at this rate). Wallace & Norman have been solid all year, but these past few weeks they havent been, especially Wallace. I knew he was injured not long ago but if he's playing that means he's recovered.

huddersfield lost to hull. i have no idea how a team that started so well could sink this low  but i'm glad crabtree scored. as much as i hate his haircut he was really and truely the man of the match and that in spite of being on the losing side.

warrington should beat hull easily even though they really showed nerves in their last match.

the bulldogs won. after a furious start by the bulldogs rabbitohs were dominant for the most part of the first half but it all changed towards the end of it.

in super league leeds beat the catalans yesterday  and since i'm also following the championship i might mention sheffield are surprise finalists and will play against featherstone for the title next sunday :yeah:

extraordinary weekend of rugby league is right ahead :cheer: it begins with 2 super league semifinals today and tomorrow, then culminates with the nrl final and then championship one and championship finals on sunday, all games will be televised and available on stream or on tv, depending on where you are.

they have this ad on the super league website and i think it's cool and fitting ahead of this weekend:

FT Wigan Warriors 12 - 13 Leeds Rhinos

a very good game i have to say. some controversial decisions but at least they didn't decide it unlike the cowboys vs manly game. even though i feel catalans, rather than leeds, should have been here tonight.

i guess everybody who posts or reads here already knows that melbourne beat the bulldogs 14-4 and won nrl. i wanted bulldogs would win but they made some errors in bad positions and melbourne took advantage and deserved to win. the brawl after the bulldogs scored was embarrassing, though.

few people probably care about who won the championship but i do and i watched the grand final and sheffield won it beating featherstone 20-16. and i gotta say, the level may be lower than nrl or super league but the second sheffield try was terrific, one of the best i've seen this season with several short passes and offloads and a good run to finish it off

Melbourne were too classy in the end..

I love abit of footy biff but whats with Graham biting Slaters ear.. that was just stupid.

The fight was embarassing. Slater needs to clean up his act trying to save tries, that one wasn't so bad but he does have a reputation of leading with the feet.

Was going for the Bulldogs but you have to give it to Melbourne, they were the classier team on the day...defence was amazing, full proof. Attack was crisper too. They didn't allow Cant. to weave their magic and Barba for the most part was nullified.

rugby fans still around?

i have just seen a test between france and samoa. what i don't like about rugby union is that a team can win so easily on penalties. i mean, this is rugby, i want to see players pushing hard for tries. yes, poor discipline should be punished but samoa scored 2 tries to 1 french (and that one was basically a gift) and that just doesn't seem right.

I see your point about penalties making up most of the points, although I think in Union, the players push for tries all they can but the sheer amount of traffic on the pitch makes it impossible to create consistent, clean opportunities to score them. I actually enjoy penalties as most of the time they break up the most monotonous patches of stalemated play and there's still that element of risk to them.

i don't know. i didn't grow up with rugby, so it's difficult for me to tell but i have a feeling that they award too many points for penalties and drop goals, like one point too many. i don't know if it would really make much difference but at least it would make it less likely to see a team scrape through on penalties while their opponents score tries. oh well, in every sport you get some sort of "injustice"

hey rugby fans :wavey: if you are still around. or anyone who wants to join.

i've just seen the game between st helens and huddersfield. i hope huddersfield manage to play like this the whole season. it was a great game for them in the 40-4 demolition of st helens away from home. i just hope it won't be a good start and then a mess later in the season like last year.

6 nations is also on, might go out to watch italy vs france tomorrow.
