Big temperature difference and there we go-a cold. I just hope she won't have to withdraw with a virus like last year :( Anyway, decent draw. She basically owns Lisicki, plus Sabine lost two tight matches in Fed Cup, which can't be good for her confidence. Jankovic on the other hand got injured playing Fed, and now it seems that she might not play in Paris at all. So, I'm rooting for Maria-Li final and a nice win for our champ :D

Apparently it might just be a cold, so hopefully, given that she's got a 4-week break after this, she'll have enough in reserve to pull through a few matches

I do really want a final against Li. She NEEDS a win against her!

If I'm not mistaken, Maria shall be No.2 next week even if she loses in the first match, considering Kvitova isn't defending Paris? But I suppose it will reverse once Kvitova plays Doha and Dubai.

Is she ill again? Hopefully it's gonna be fine. Considering it's not really an injury and it just needs a good couple day of rest, I think Maria will pull it through and have a solid block of training before Indian Wells and Miami. I really hope she can win either of them.

The fact that she has played a small amount of tournaments and still attained high rankings just proves how well she did in majority of them. Quality against quantity. Total opposite of Wozniacki, the only reason she held that first position for so long was her playing basically every possible event -.- if playing less tournaments means great performances in pretty much all of them, fine by me :D as for Paris, I think that, if she stays healthy and in her AO form, she could easily win this. I don't see who could stand in her way, because despite Li's results in the past year, I'm still not convinced she's the one to do big over longer periods of time. And her age and mental (in)stability don't make it any easier for her.

She withdrew? Because the official site of the tournament didn't say anything...

Edit: I saw now that Safarova is playing against Koryttseva (a lucky loser obviously), and she was supposed to play Sabine. Oh, well, I guess that makes it easier for Maria :) Poor Sabine, hopefully she'll recover soon.

Just got a portion of her PC from earlier...
http://www.cbssports.com/tennis/story/17155151/sharapova-sets-sights-on-london-olympics

Despite losing 6-3, 6-0 to Victoria Azarenka of Belarus last month in one of the most lopsided Grand Slam finals, Sharapova hopes her Australian Open campaign can still be a springboard for winning another major title this year.

"I didn't play competitively for a few months, and coming in with an injury in the ankle, to have that result in Australia was personally quite big," Sharapova said.

I honestly think that she's getting this final out of her mind. But I think its in a way easier 'cus she played so poorly in the Final there's nothing she can take away from it - other than the fact she made, despite not playing/injured.

Stonerpova
Feb 7th, 2012, 04:01 AM
If she cares enough she'll win the title. The only player I'm semi-worried about is Li, but she's probably still reeling from the choke against Clijsters and I doubt she makes the final.

I don't know why but probably it has to do with clay being my favorite surface that I like The French more than Wimbledon. The clay season just amazes me. Always wanted for Maria to do well during this period and her winning Rome was :worship::hearts:.

A title at the French would be awesome. I'm not saying it will be this year but I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Not only majors matter. She lost OZ final now you need to move on maybe winning the lesser titles than majors will help her to finally win majors titles. She needs to win matches.

JamieOwen3
Feb 8th, 2012, 12:12 PM
Winning matches on the tour is the preperation she has to get to do well in the slams, Australia was the first time she's done so well at a slam without playing any matches prior. She's always said she needs to play a few matches to get a good rythm going so i don't want a loss here. It will be a setback IMO.

Feb 8th, 2012, 01:41 PM
Like somebody else said before me, it is important for her to get into the right rhythm and win matches, but personally, I won't be too disappointed if she doesn't win this. Not in terms of her game (the draw is pretty ridiculous and she should win if she plays even with 70%), but in terms of my disappointment after the AO final. I mean, I didn't expect her to come that far, but after beating Petra in an amazing match, to lose against Vika in such a manner? :bigcry: Either way, looking forward to seeing her today :D And a little question? Is the tournament from the 250 series? Considering the players, I would guess so xD

Didn't watch the first set but the second set looked kind of solid. Wasn't really tested tho.

Paris court just makes her shot look faster and lethal. It suits her very well, good pace and allows her to dictate.

I'm glad she has improved the variation in her serve since the beginning of the year.

Last year it was so predictable which directions she was gonna serve and this gave her lots of troubles. And this year she has reduced her double faults significantly and it's mighty impressive.

I see it a bit differently :D First time, it was the first point in the game, and I think she was experimenting a bit, which is always good for first rounds, especially since she had a good result. Approach was not very good, and that landed her into trouble. Second time, she hit a slice, because Scheepers' ball barely went over the net, so she was basically forced to come out and couldn't have reacted better in my opinion. Third time again Scheepers' shot again barely got to her side, although she could have put more top spin on her forehand, and maybe tried to play it down the line, instead of cross court diagonal. But, it doesn't matter, the important thing is that she won :D

It is definitely very fast, probably the fastest on the tour atm. You can tell by how fast the balls fly, and also how little time each player has to time their shots and how difficult it is to defend.

It might not seem that fast on the camera because its projecting the match from the baseline where depth and speed are harder to determine.

No doubt it's gonna be harder this time, but I believe Maria will win this in 2 :)

Good luck :cheer:

I'm sorry but am I watching the same Maria as the majority of us here? I don't know why you guys are concerned about her at this stage when she is clearly playing with a lot of confidence in her tennis.

With Kerber's weak serve, esp second serve, I'm sure Maria's gonna take full advantage of it, and it's Kerber who needs to serve well to stay competitive with Maria because Maria's ground game can easily blow her off the court - fast pace, flat ball, good depth whatever you need in an indoor tournament. They might rally but Maria knows how to play on this surface.

I agree. I think everything is on Martha's racket in this depleted field.

She's still not up to the standards of her glory days, but the Maria of the last 5 months is way better than anything we've seen since 2008.

She's not invincible, and I can't say anything is automatic, but she's a solid favorite against any but a few of the top players and has shown she can beat them on her day.

QF vs Kerber is the 3rd match tomorrow:

1. Liezel Huber & Lisa Raymond vs Alberta Brianti & Alize Cornet
2. Julia Goerges vs Klara Zakopalova (not before 14.30 hrs)
3. Maria Sharapova vs Angelique Kerber

Allez Maria :cheer:

After reading all your posts I think I should get my eyes checked!

Next opponent: Kerber! I think that Maria can win this in two, but I expect it to be more difficult than the one at the AO. Hopefully she'll show up extremely focused and with all of her shots working well, just as during their previous match three weeks ago! ;)

Maria probably will win 9 out 10 times playing Kerber but nothing can be taken for granted. Good luck Maria.

Ffs, I'm out until about 4.30GMT (5.30 French time)... the second time in a row they've scheduled it for the one time of day when I probably can't watch  Hopefully Goerges-Zakapalova goes for about 3 hours

well 2.30pm is 12.30am here and I'd assume it takes at least 1.5 hrs to get the match finished and get the players on court... so any time after 2am in Sydney (4am in NZ :sobbing::hug:)

Wait! I think there is a calculation error here.

The QF's start at 2:30 PM Paris time, that's 8:30 AM EST.

Figure an hour and a half for the Julia v Klara match, then the Pova v Kerber match will start about 10:00 AM EST.

If you don't srart watching until 11:30 AM EST, you may miss the whole match!

The only good news is that ESPN3 is streaming the matches, so if you miss it LIVE you can always watch it on REPLAY. The excitement never ends...
