Goal: 2012 will be devoted to tracking down Australian results in detail. This is part of that project.
This thread is divided into two parts.

A. A Records section

B. A player guide. (1922-1926 added)

The records section will be devoted to Australian Open records.

The player's guide will list players who have competed at the Australian Open.

Additions and corrections are more than welcome.

Specific Australian results may be found at:
http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=224499

Finally, this work would not have been possible without the list of Aussies who have helped over the years in building results. I tip my hat to them, in particular Andrew Tas, GeeTee, and Louloubelle.

GeeTee has a wonderful biographical section devoted to Australians at:
http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=448792

GeeTee's thread has more biographical details and overall career retropectives than this thread, which is devoted specifically to the Australian Open.

Players Guide:

Explanation of how to find players.

1. Players are listed from A to Z by last name.

2. Unmarried players are found under 1 name (example: WADE, VIRGINA).

3. Married players are cross-listed under the name they are most famous for. For example:

COURT, MARGARET (nee Margaret Smith)

Smith, Margaret SEE COURT

Thus details of Margaret Court's Australian Open record will be found under Court, not Smith.
-----------------------------------------

It will be noted when a player reached a singles QF or better, SF or better in doubles, and the final or better in mixed.

First "Triple" winner in 1925, she repeated the feat in 1928 and 1929. She was undefeated in singles play after her first attempt in 1924. Daphne's 1 year hiatus as champion in 1927 is explained by an early default. She won 21 consecutive singles matches from 1925-1930.

Today's Australian Women's singles trophy is named the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup in her honor.

Esna finally won the championships in 1927 after being the bridesmaid for 5 consecutive years. Her partnership with Jack Hawkes was particularly noteworthy. The pair was undefeated in 17 matches, taking the mixed title 3 of the 4 times they paired. In 1928 they defaulted the mixed final. Married to a Scotsman in 1929, Esna planned to return to the championships in 1932, but defaulted due to her mother’s death.

Most remarkable of all is Boy’s consistency. In the 21 events she contested she never failed to make the semifinals or better. The only exception is her 1932 default due to factors beyond her control.
