I know there is a Fed Cup thread in the Sprechen Sie Deuce forum but 90% of the posts are in German and I know a lot of us don't understand half of it.

For those who don't know, the tie will be held in Stuttgart (on indoor hardcourts) 4-5 of February.

German team: Sabine Lisicki, Julia Goerges, Angelique Kerber, Anna-Lena Gronefeld

Czech team: Petra Kvitova, Iveta Benesova, Barbora Zahlavová-Strýcová, Lucie Hradecka

Auf geht's, ladies! :bounce:

That was no big deal, because you wrote the names in the second post of that thread, so I just copied it :D

Thank you :)

Actually I wanted to take another picture of Sabine. One from Australian Open, but it didn't look sharp enough, so I took one from Wimbledon 2011 ;)

The German Fedcup team has been officialy renamed Porsche Team Deutschland (http://www.unitednetworker.com/2012/01/30/fed-cup-team-wird-porsche-team-deutschland/)! Isn't it a bit ironic that only recently Julia had to sell her own Porsche because she couldn't afford the tax rates?

Kerber is ranked higher though. It's likely Kerber won't even play unless either Sabine or Julia have a really bad match on the first day and Rittner chooses her to play a singles match on the second day instead. If it came down to the doubles, it'll definitely be Julia-ALG playing that.

I wouldn`t be too sure, that Julia will be 2nd singles player on the first day. Rittner said, the decision depends on how good their training results will be.
And also, remember how "pissed" Rittner was after Julia`s match against Radwanska and how harsh she openly criticised her!
I wouldn`t be too surprised, to see Angie play!?

Sadly, I don't think any of the German girls will beat Petra. Petra on indoor hardcourts is lethal-- there's a reason she didn't lose a match on it all last year. That's why I'm so surprised they didn't choose to play on indoor clay given how good Julia is on it, plus Sabine being a decent clay courter as well.

HowardH
Jan 31st, 2012, 04:54 AM
Why did they choose indoor hard? I would have also thought indoor clay was a better choice. The Czechs always play well on indoor hard. Petra will be so tough to play.

Rovegun
Jan 31st, 2012, 11:23 AM
agree guys... Petra is pretty good on indoor hard and as you said she didn´t lose on this surface last year.... I think Germany would have a better chance to beat Petra on clay but Petra won Madrid but I think there was a little bit faster clay... but we´ll see anyway I have to cheer for our Czech girls... so much looking forward to the weekend! I´ll be happy for both sides to be through...

exactly! I think both side got the toughest opponent they could have got... it´s very sad one team will play for Fed Cup title and another will fight for staying up in the World Group....

our captain said after first training in Stuttgart:

there´s a beautiful indoor court, new and fast one... balls flying very well and fast... the Czech team is living two minutes from the Porsche Arena... everything´s ok...

Why did they choose indoor hard? I would have also thought indoor clay was a better choice. The Czechs always play well on indoor hard. Petra will be so tough to play.
They thought that it would better suit Andrea's game. And the decision was made before Petra's big autumn success.

Probably because there was no indoor clay venue available or because clay is Sabine's (arguably Germany's best player) worst surface?
No they would have prepared it in the Porsche Arena like last year.

my impression was that German Tennis Fed doesn't like Kerber

She was a bit solitary before she came back on track. And at the last tie, where she definitely wanted to play, Sabine and Anna-Lena (doubles) were the better choice.

If I had known that I wouldn´t have spoken with her in English in Prague and maybe she would have understood Czech a bit

and Angie? sorry but her surname Kerber doesn´t sound extra Polish to me but I take it :D just wondering how strong the Polish Fed Cup team would be with Aga, Sabine and Angie :D

Trust me, Angie (or Andzelika in Polish) is more Polish girl than Sabine

About Fed Cup - Exactly, it was a chance to play for Poland by Kerber, she even asks Polish Tennis Assosiation if she can play for Poland but stupid PZT (Polish Tennis Assosiation) ignore her and decided not to wait any longer :help: That was the time when Angie was in the 2nd hundred of WTA Rank so the people probably said she won't be need for us :o

So far I know it was on the contrary. Polish Tennis Assosiation asked Kerber to play for Poland, and she considered that, because she could not qualify for olimpia als german (4 yrs ago). Finally she refused.

It was a question: How many hours did they spend on a training when they haven't any tournaments. Sabine started to answer: "When I don't play a tournament..." and then she asked Mariusz Fyrstenberg how to call that time in Polish language. Mariusz answered: Off-Season

Julia fought her heart out, but couldn't quite beat Kvitty. That won't make Sabs feel any better.

I'm not saying Iveta wasn't capable of beating Sabs (she clearly was!), but really the World No.14 having won the first set 62 should really on the law of averages win the match. To surrender the next two 46 26 is not good - but I often fear this sort of performance from her. Her service goes walkabout too often for my liking & with it, the rest of her game.

Yup, there is definitely a mental aspect to it. Maybe the weight of expectation being the leading player out on the first rubber was too much for her. She didn't say that in her Fed Cup interview that I saw the other day ("she didn't see it that way") but deep down - maybe it was in her mind. Playing for your country where it's only YOU out on that court vs. your opponent IS a pressure situation. Your nation is watching you.

Tomorrow? Well obviously one of two things will happen with Sabine. Either she will still be traumatised from her loss today & surrender meekly to Kvitty (who will be buoyed - & relieved - at her win today), or (& this is the one I prefer) she will fight to the end. I don't mind how she plays (although she needs to find answers) as long as she shows some of the same fighting spirit that saw her beat Kuznetsova at the AO recently.

I don´t like if someone is underrating Iveta because it is not fair to her... she played very well and deserved to win the match because she was simply better than Sabine and I think no one expected that... I thought Julia could make it tough for Petra but certainly not Iveta so she suprised me very nicely... Sab didn´t play her best and what she´s capable of... her first serve didn´t work at all and she made a lot of UEs in my opinion and of course, she was under an unbelievable pressure... she refused that pressure in the interview before the tie but she looked she´s not fine with it...

Germany captain Lisicki burst into tears at the post-match press conference in frustration.

"I was a set up and at 4-4 in the second set, everything was ok and I was in control of the game," she sobbed and will face Kvitova first up on Sunday before Goerges tackles Benesova in the last round of singles.

"Then I suddenly couldn't find my length and my opponent could generate some pressure.

"She did everything right and although I am the better player, I wasn't able to implement what I had planned.

"I will not hide now, after the drugs testing I will go up into the box and join the girls.

"We are a team, we win together and we lose together."

I'm sorry guys, I wasn't all that sympathetic to Bine yesterday but that's because we all want her to do well, & I'm frustrated that for somebody with such a big game, who is touted to challenge all the top players in the coming years, she is still inconsistent - not only from match to match, but set to set it appears! Her fighting spirit is not in doubt, I know that, I can see that. But the mental aspect is one thing of a few that she needs to tackle.

Does she want to be regarded as a promising player with a big, but flawed game, who can challenge the big players...on her day? I'm sure she wants to be much more than that. Aim higher than that.

I thought there might be tears afterwards. The pressure of dealing with the national media after you have lost a game playing for your country cannot be very pleasant. I hope - & am sure - there were people around her to comfort her afterwards. Same applies to Jule, who tried everything she could to turn the situation around.

And well played to ALG who tweeted everyone afterwards I see.

...

This sums it up quite well :hatoff: though my expectations are somehow lower for all Germans in the top30 now, also for Andrea.
They're very fast disappointed after winning unexpectedly against top players and then can't find their successful game anymore against equivalent players afterwards. We've seen so many cuts in the careers of German girls.
I just hope Sabine does not just focus on her weapons in future cause it's adopted by many who like to play fast and without spin like Kvitty or Vika. Sabine has such a great repertoire of strokes but if she feels umcomfortable in a match she suddenly reduces her game to monotony what is totally vulnerable.
The skills are what I like most about her game but she uses her variety often too late and gets too wobbly then if she misses open courts.

Yes sad, but maybe more expected than the L to Benesova. Although she was up with her for a set & a half. That she was matching the World No.2 for a while might give her a bit of heart. All part of the learning curve I guess. What she learns next is up to her.

Says everything for the German girls that I love their team & hope they stick with it. Czechs were the defending champions after all.

Judging by a tweet from Julia earlier, I think it'll be played on clay in Stuttgart again. I would love to see Petko back in time, but if she doesn't they still have the stronger team IMO. she also skips Stuttgart, so i think it is rather serious, not just a sprain, she will be out for a month, if she will play again after stuttgart, thats quite long for just precaution.
US doctors failed again :fiery:

sadly she hasn't given us some more details.

You have no details but you're convinced "US Doctors" are at fault. Listen to yourself sometimes.

Very disappointing :( Poor Bine  Well maybe it's good for Australia that they won't have to face Bine, but to be out for Stuttgart as well is a real let down for the tournament and especially for Bine herself.

Not necessarily! The problem is, she won't have any ability to practise on red clay before the events in Stuttgart and there's no sense playing such important (FC) and well-staffed (Porsche-Cup) tourneys without any practice...btw:her main objects this year starting in Juin 2012,

and not to quit the clay season there are three big tourneys to go to!

In general however, it seems incredible one set of doctors tell her it's not serious, to the extent that she is expected to play Fed Cup. The next set of doctors tell her it's more serious & she needs to rest it thus missing Fed Cup & now also Stuttgart. You would think doctors around the world would at least be consistent! Bad news for Bine, but hopefully not season threatening. One wonders if those ankle supports do her any good, or in fact did they help prevent a more serious injury?

I don't really believe that this injury is so serious  She always finds an excuse not to play Fed Cup and how she played against Czechia was such a joke :o

Well, there was only a report who quoted Rittner as saying that the injury wasn't bad. Nothing said about whether she will be fit again for Fed Cup. If you have something like sprained ligaments, it's not unusual that you are out for 2-3 weeks. And as we know she wouldn't retire because of minor ailments. Just terrible that she can't play her sole home tournament!

I think you are a poor dog because you can not handle with criticism against Lisicki

I mean, what about Fed Cup 2010? She was not playing because of Pattaya City and her match against Benesova was terrible. She didn't present any motivation like Goerges and Petkovic always do in Fed Cup matches.

we will see, but first it was nothing serious and she was fine for FedCup and back in Germany it's serious and she has to skip FedCup and at least Stuttgart.
So it's save to say first diagnosis was not right or incomplete, that's all i'm saying.
I hope we will get to know what exactly is wrong with the ankle soon.

I wonder if the injury is so serious or it is just a precaution not to make it worse... so now open door for Mona?

Doubt it. I reckon Petko might get the call up, after all.

So no Fed Cup then. Such a shame. But we'll keep this thread going for general FC chatter. Who knows, maybe Sabine will do a Petko and show up to the tie to take over the role of head cheerleader. :D

That's not criticism, that's only crap. Sorry.

If she would play Fed Cup and retire in a match, then you would come here and say, why she didn't withdraw from Fed Cup.

Typical for Sabine is to play despite she has problems with injury and her health. It was a good move (or probably she had to much pain) to retire against Serena. Now we must hope that there are no bad surprises any more and that she can recover.

...and Petko got it.... I am very surprised I don´t think it is a wise decision by Rittner to let Petko play.... Andrea will lead the team if I understand well what Deutscher Tennis Bund says... she hasn´t played since January and everyone knows how much tough it is to get in form after coming back from injury when the season is underway.... I know she hasn´t been out for a long time but she´s still missing 3 months of play...

= my thoughts but the nomination of her shows the slow believe in the other players to beat Stosur, what'll be the key of the match. I still believe in Julia but absolutely not in Petko itM.

Not once, she replied to me many times early in 2011, but my life is far from centered around her anymore (if it ever was).
I still stood up for her on GM when people said mean things about her after her injury, because I am still fond of her, as she is a nice person and I enjoy supporting her tennis. But I no longer have interest in making collages or videos about her or anything like that. But I won't go into details about why such enthusiasm has been lost, I just look at her differently than before, not in a worse way, just different. OK, just explaining my current feelings and that's all I have to say about it.
