If I was Petra, I would take off Fed Cup this year, especially if it will/can conflict with Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, which is the reason she's removed Paris Indoors in the frst place (she said it made her tired for those tournaments).

I wonder if she's doing this out of responsibility/patriotism, or cause she wants to.

All year long she plays as an individual tennis player, responsible just for herself. Fedcup or Hopman cup are unique opportunities for her to play as part of a team. And yes, she's a big patriot. She's said she was very influenced in this area by the victory of the Czech ice-hockey team at the Nagano Olympics in 1998. It was the first-ever Olympics in which the best players in the world participated (all NHL stars, including Wayne Gretzky) She watched it as a 8-year old kid. I think she also has a lot of fun with other Czech girls during these Fed Cup weeks. It's also an opportunity for Kotyza and Ivanko to have some time off.

I think its good that Petra is playing Fed Cup right away.
It helps her move on from AO and look forward instead of dwelling too much on her loss to Maria.
Besides, Czech girls really do get along with each other quite famously. :)

And by skipping Paris Indoors, she will have one week off before Doha and Dubai. And another week off before Indian Wells and Miami.
Good scheduling. :)

German team impresses me.
3 singles players are in top 30.

I think Petra can defeat both Sabine and Julia.
But Iveta might lose both of her matches.
So the tie will probably be decided by the doubles match.

That looks like a good team to me. Shrugs.

There's no guarantee that Lucie could beat Georges or Lisicki (all head cases, with Lisicki being more talented), if Petra goes off one match.

I'm thinking about going (but I'll probably go skiing to the mountains instead ). Is the venue easily accessible from the center of Stuttgart and do you know the ticket price and the capacity of the arena ? Do you think it will be sold out ?

I've also heard that Stuttgart has great Porsche and Mercedes museums. Could you recommend some non-tennis activity?

Thanx a lot.

Big scar on BZS' forehead. Suppose she whacked herself with her racquet?

For me the biggest "scar" was her performance vs. Serena. She was one set down before the match started and looked like a frightened rookie. She admitted this after the match and was angry with herself, because the second set showed her that Serena was vulnerable. Makarova then finished the job.

I agree that it could go either way. It would be boring, if one team were overwhelming favorites. TBH, Petra is probably glad that Andrea Petkovic is currently out of the business  But you could also argue that the Czechs can't nominate Nicole Vaidišová, who has a 11-1 FedCup record in singles and is now wasting her talent.

I have a question. Why Cetkovska and Safarova were not nominated for Fed Cup? Actually, I was glad to be able to see both players :(

The answer is simple. The nomination was based on the performance in Australia and Kvitty and Iveta were the best players. Petra Cetkovska was injured in December and lost in the 2nd round in Melbourne, she is not in good shape. Lucie also played bad in Australia, she lost in the 1st round. So I think Iveta deservedly got the No.2 spot on the Czech team despite being lower in the rankings.

BTW, here is a cute old photo of them (with Iveta and Nicole). Lucie is a good-looking girl, but she is outshined by the rest here, IMO

Hi Petronius. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Lucie's still on the team, right?

And if Lucie did get demoted or left off of the team, I think it may of had as much/more to do with her poor performance/nerves in Moscow Fed Cup, than anything else.

Of course her Australia performance didn't help, but Lucie was dreadful in Moscow. So why not try someone different?

Yes she's now out. She played poorly both in Moscow and in Australia.

The Czech team captain always has a tough job with the nomination, this was the case even before the Moscow final. While Petra is the clear No. 1 in singles the remaining girls are basically at the same level.

According to the Monday rankings, Safarova is #28 (but is in bad shape), Cetkovska is #31(coming from an injury), Hradecka #47, Benesova #49 (best Aussie performance after Petra), Zakopalova is #51 and Strycova is #53. So the differences are pretty small.

I think the rule is whoever has been playing the best recently will be nominated regardless of the rankings or past achievements.

I like what the Czechs did with their team. Obviously, Petra's the anchor, but if Iveta plays singles, she doesn't have to play doubles, but Zahalavova Strycova is her normal doubles partner, so they could, or they could pair Zahlavova Strycova with Hradecka. They could also pair Hradecka with either Iveta or Zahlavova Strycova or Iveta, and even though Hlavackova is Hradecka's normal doubles partner, this gives them more flexibility.

  I'd put Hradecka on singles. She's good on indoors, no matter what happened at the AO. Big serve, big groundstrokes, she should be tougher opposition for the germans than Benesova, IMO. Barbie and Iveta are an established doubles team already, so that'd be always a good choice.

Speaking about Fedcup; I have a thought.

I wonder if someone would of reminded Petra during that last failed service game at the OZ Open, that she was down 0-3 to Kuznetsova in enemy territory and came back to win the match, would she had served better?

Cause that's what Petra said happened. Petra said she was down. And Czech Fed Cup coach, Peter Paola, cheered her up by saying "its only one break", and that reminded/inspired Petra to make her comeback.

Moral of the story, never give up (especially off of that Fedcup victory)!! I thought she would of remembered that match for confidence (regardless of how many BP's she missed out on).

mac47

I think if she had ever been down a break in that semi, she would have come back. Unfortunately, when she was broken, it ended the match right there with no chance for a comeback. She would have won that match if it had been best of 5.

I think if she had ever been down a break in that semi, she would have come back. Unfortunately, when she was broken, it ended the match right there with no chance for a comeback. She would have won that match if it had been best of 5.

Petra was broken, but they were still on serve.

Petra had broken Masha earlier during the third set, then Masha broke her back.

Unfortunately, Petra got broken during her last service game, though they were on serve.

Here's a perfect overview: http://www.fedcup.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100017591

On Saturday, the first match starts at 12:00 Central European Time, i.e. 6:00 a.m. New York
On Sunday, the show begins one hour earlier

But I still don't know who's gonna play the first match, we'll have to wait until the draw is released

Where's Safarova and Hradecka?

This may be the very last Fed Cup weekend for Barbora Strycova. Not only that a short time ago her disgusting vocabulary triggered many complaints from TV viewers, but now her daddy turns out to be a money-obsessed loser who would do/sell anything to have more. According to the report, the guy lives with his wife in a luxury mansion surrounded by a steep wall in Plzeň (west CZ). What a difference from Petra's humble parents, who still live in the same modest house in Fulnek, have the same friends and neighbours and try to contribute to the local community.
This sheds a bad light on the entire Fed Cup team.

Hopefully not, but it's always sad to hear these stories, it was actually the top story in the GM yesterday. It's really not good for the Czech team's image, when the father of one of the team members is accused of involvement in organized crime.

Here's a picture when his daughter won the Australian Open junior title. He really looks a bit like a mafia boss. I hope the Czech tennis (and other) authorities will act responsibly.

more i think about this tie, more i'm convinced that the doubles match will be the decider.

I just have no faith that Iveta or Lucie can win an away singles against Sabine and Julia.
German girls will have the crowd behind them and they will be amped.

This will leave a HEAVY burden on Petra to win both of her singles. She could do it but its lot of pressure. It leaves her very little margin for error :(

Then we have the doubles. Will we see Bara there? if not her, then who is our doubles team?
Lot of teams bring non-roster players to Fed Cup for practice partners and to soak up the experience.
I read that Sloan Stephens is such a player for USA.
Did Czech team bring anyone? And can that player be inserted in the lineup in case Bara can't cope with her family problem?

at this moment, I think this tie will be a pick'em. Too close to call.

of course, it is not a pleasant situation for our Fed Cup team but who could have expected that? I think it wouldn´t be fair to Bara to send her back home due to her father makes it embarrasing for her... it´s not our concern and she has to feel if she is ready to play for us...

on the pic he looks a mafia boss but I think there are much more influential people around tennis and maybe even closer to our favourite players then we could imagine... every sport has got its own bosses...

True, but there's no lefty WTA player (with all respect to Kerber) who can hit as hard as Petra so that's probably why their only option was to hire a male player
IMO, another reason is that Kerber herself needed some lefty to practice with.

what a clever guy you are:worship::D I don´t think when I am writing... so I agree with you, who could Kerber herself practise with when she´s lefty :D maybe she could play against a wall :D not seriously there can be a good reason from Germans to use a male hitting partner due to Petra´s powerful shots... pretty bad those both team has to play against each other in 1st round... both sides would deserve to play semifinals or finals at least...

The draw says that match will be first on the second day. Really, it depends on the players form in their first matches. Like for example, if Sabine plays like shit against Iveta I could see Rittner using Kerber (also a lefty) for the Petra match instead.

But I hope we get a Sabine-Petra match too... two of my favourite players. And I hope it's a competitive match and not a one-way, demolishing choke-fest. :tape:

Basically this:

I like playing indoors. (No surprises here )
The surface is similar to indoor courts we've played before, like in Belgium for example. It feels sort of like 'emery paper'. It's not very fast and the ball bounces quite high, which I think will suit Julia Georges, who uses a kick serve and likes to play a high forehand.
The German top three are almost at the same level.
I think they have a very strong team, but we are ready for them!

Two aces in a row to take the second set. She's a boss. I love how she can bring her best serves at clutch moments.

Now, keep the momentum and steamroll Julia in the third.

Yup!

I personally think it's come all too quick for her. With most players it comes slowly (what Petra has achieved), but it's come too quickly for her and she's not used to it and is not used to the pressure. Some people need to do things slowly. I'm sure that's why she lost the AO SF - she couldn't take the pressure of being no. 1

Wow, Petra's pre-match comments were totally spot-on:

"The surface is similar to indoor courts we've played before, like in Belgium for example. It feels sort of like 'emery paper'. It's not very fast and the ball bounces quite high, which I think will suit Julia Georges, who uses a kick serve and likes to play a high forehand"

Julia's serve and forehand kept her in the match. I think she even had more forehand winners than Petra. On the other hand, she struggled with changing direction of the ball from her backhand side.

I feel sorry for Julia because she played great and also deserved to win the match but Petra showed why she´s no. 2 and proved more calm and less nerves... at the end it was 50:50 and the luckier won....

There is such a night and day difference between confident, executing Petra and out-of-form Petra. I can't wait until we see the former again, because these matches are killing me.

I miss her form from Wimbledon and Madrid and the YEC. It was so awesome to see her paint the lines and make other players look totally helpless for whole sets at a time. I understand that it's not humanly possible to hit lines consistently, but it is far more fun to watch than these nailbiters.

Good win for Petra, Julia played an amazing match on many levels, certainly her best in months, Petra stayed cool and kept things tight as strong as possible in a triple threat situation (crowd + Julia on fire + personal issues) to let these little details to which she makes reference float so that to her benefit [...] this is what very top players do. She has progressed and keeps progression a lot.

As for tactics unsurprising, Petra adapted well, she reduced her power for like 20-30%, found beautiful margins within the court which automatically brought greater efficiency than trying to out-Federer, Nadal, when in matches as close and emotionally engaging as this one something she was completely unable to do on a consistent basis against Maria in Australia, certainly proof that she's aware.

Matches of the sort is what builds characters, that's 2 consecutive matches she plays like this, Petra said she learned from the first one, well I can trust her though to be honest at 40-15 for 5-3* it didn't show at all but hey, her reaction after that service game lost corroborates somehow what she says, great composure and I believe it was for 2 service games Julia hadn't seen a point or something (need to re-watch the match) on her service games, that's how it's done.

Petra has had her share of complex matches to resolve even on her greatest surface grass, Pironkova, Vika, Kaia Kanepi -- also in indoors (not a surface), Madrid too at the end only the final result would count -- 2-0 up, that's the finality in sports as a whole and always will be for the next 100 years and over to come.

First off, thanks for the pic Cosmoose:hatoff:...on to more important stuff, though, winners find a way to pull things out even when they play below their standards(in contrast, losers nearly always manage to blow things somehow and recite their litany of excuses,post-match).Petra has done this frequently so we're way past the point of calling this mere 'good luck'.

Was gonna make a smart-ass comment about Lisicki's penchant for injuring herself...but she has lots of fans here so I'll keep the peace:angel:.Still, even if Petra and Iveta both fell in singles tomorrow, the Czech Doubles aces would be quite likely to finish off whichever German team took the court

I tell you guys all the time that Petra is in fine shape and conditioning, but some of you guys don't wanna believe it. Lol.

Plus, two three setters in two days is actually good for her, considering she'll have the week of before Doha. Maybe she'll peak there?

You can see why she won Paris Indoors last year, if she had Fed Cup as a lead in the next day. She must of been warm (though she had that long early match with that Czech player).

I just hope Petra rest, arrives in Doha at the right time, remembers some of her tactics here (Fed Cup-Germany), and wins it.

Congrats and good luck Petra!!

Actually, in her interview today she says that she is not very happy with her tennis right now. She's winning because of self-confidence and experience, but it's not the player we remember from last year. Even her father Mr.Kvita says she just didn't get enough training at the end of the year.
My personal guess is that if she doesn't do well in Doha she will skip Dubai to get some extra time before IW & Miami.

As far as Doha, momentum is only as good as your latest match and tournament. We'll see?

And if Petra doesn't do well in Doha (which I think she will), I don't see why she wouldn't play Dubai (unless it was a physical, conditioning or mental fatigue issue)? She would need the match play. That's why she took Paris indoors off her schedule this year (so she could focus on those 3 tournaments, without being tired).

We'll see?

I don't get the talk about Petra's loss of form. She had an extremely positive weekend beating two very dangerous opponents. In my opinion, the match against Lisicki was one of the best matches Petra ever played. Sabine's serving in the first set was Serena-like but Petra stayed focused and didn't panic. In the second set Sabine's serving level dropped by a little a bit and that's was all Petra needed. She executed all the important points beautifully. The third set was much closer then the score suggests, Sabine didn't break down mentally at all, she kept pressuring Petra but Petra stayed strong.

The match against Goerges wasn't such a high quality but very important for Petra. From her comments before match I could feel she is not very confident against Julia. The reason must be the thrashing she got from her in Linz in 2010. (you can watch the match on youtube). The Linz match is one of the very few matches where Petra was outplayed despite playing well, and it happened right before her breakout tournament in Brisbane, so I don't take the argument that it was before the "new Petra".
This time Petra managed to win and there were parts of the match where she clearly dominated Julia. With the win, I think Petra got rid of this mental block against Julia and their next matches will be easier for her.

Actually, I think that her current level is better then in Istanbul. In Istanbul she played great first set and a half against Zvonareva and had amazing comeback against Radwanska. Other matches weren't that spectacular.

I liked your post and thought it was very insightful, well written and presented. So thank you for that. But one thing did catch my attention.

How do you equate Petra losing in October 2010 at Linz, with her start in 2011? Those are two different periods, stemming from two separate training/conditioning periods (though I will agree that she remembered that Linz match; while Julia played very well in streches/to begin)?

You can't equate the two though. Petra barely won a match after Wimby 2010. And that match was more indicative of the end of her 2010 season, than a precursor of 2011 . Remember there was an off season after that.

Totally new season, perspective in 2011. But that shouldn't take away from your well presented post.

I don't believe that Petra just "jumped" to new level during the three months between the two tournaments. She improves continually , so we cannot really put a line between "old" and "new" Petra. The Linz match was very close to the start of her great run of results and is relevant.

don't know what happened to our RG queen, but the whole team Italia seems to be suffering from some severe confidence shortage towards the Fed Cup, and based on the pictures leaked from Petra's special training in Turkey, team Czech could even put their home venue in a swimming pool and don't have to worry about anything

Petra will be fired up for Fed Cup for sure. Ostrava is in the same northeastern region of CZ as Fulnek. Many of her family and friends should be in attendance. It's a short, easy drive for them and a rare opportunity to see their pride and joy playing live. This is REALLY a homecoming match for Petra.

If this doesn't get her fired up, nothing will. COME ON PETRA and CZ!!!! :bounce:

Maybe it was a strange coincidence, but all three of Italy's FC'ers sucked this week...as if they only wanted a brief scrimmage before leaving the draw so that they could rest up for Petra and her mates. The Doubles match,if necessary, should be quite compelling...unless the tie has already been resolved in which case the match may be canceled...or played at half-speed by gals who have no reason to risk injury

They got this :cheer:

If I were Italy I would put Errani and Pennetta in the singles because of how bad Schaivone and Vinci form is

Not clear on why Petra and Co. need 'revenge';did the CR lose to Italy in FC a couple years back??If so,Petra and the crew certainly redeemed themselves by winning LAST year's FC.I'd call defending the title a MUCH better motivator than any vague recollections for revenge....but,in the end, whatever gets the gals fired up and ready to win is okay with me

Petra : If you ask me right now, I don´t feel the best.(after 2 weeks of training) … stomach musle injury was nothing serious I just couldn´t bend but it has no effect on running and I did everything that was planned … (first week) I only served and played on the wall … (second week ) I played for an hour, but it was not easy after all traning.

Yes. They want to avenge the 0-5 defeat suffered at the hands of Italy in 2010. It was the last time when Petra lost a FedCup singles match. But it was on clay.

But it was on clay.Petra lost to lots of lesser players when she was younger, and one or two of them might be retired now;I'd like to think she's gotten over those lesser losses after proving herself a champion...we'll see what she says after the tie

Q: You were trying quicker return in Turkey. You will use it ?
Petra: I don´t think so. It doesn´t work very well.
Q: Reportedly you trained more than last year ?
Petra: I don´t know … you should asked coaches.

There will be my complete family, friends and 100 people from Fulnek.

What on earth could this "quicker return" possibly be? I thought she hit the return pretty fast already.

I'm not surprised it didn't work well if she was trying to hit it even harder than she already does.
Probably resulted in sending the ball out of the stadium.
Still, I'm all for power, if you can make it work.
