It will be a good test for Maria, Navarro played Kvitova tough at the AO.

I'm coming into this tournament with fresh optimism. Sure, Maria just got a bit of a beatdown, but she made a final that none of us expected, played pretty well in every match before the final, and importantly, managed to sustain a reasonable serve standard throughout the tourament, not perfect, but improved.

There's currently a thread in GM about the top 5's trajectories in the last year, and it made me realise something nice. Currently, Maria has 7560 points. Coming out of last years AO, she had less than 3000 (2936) - an improvement of over 4600 points. That's seriously awesome, considering the lower end top 10 players don't even have 4600 points. All is not well, but it sure as hell isn't the doom and gloom we all felt the other day! :)

Yes, it's something Maria should be very proud of.

However, it's cold in high places, 3,700 of Maria's ranking points came from 3 slams alone. Hopefully Maria will continue to excel at slams and even better, to win 1 or 2.

It's a surprise that she ranks 77 but nobody knows anything about her.

I imagine she's one of those mediocre players who's good enough to clean up at the claycourt ITF events and get a load of ranking points from them, but not good enough to actually do anything noteworthy on the WTA Tour.

By the way, it just occurred to me.. why is Maria actually playing this? Isn't she already qualified for the Olympics because she played Fed Cup last year? Is she playing because she actually WANTS to play it? :speakles:

Didn't she only play Fed Cup once in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics though? And she qualified for that (albeit had to withdraw a few weeks before)...

That explanation would make a lot more sense though, I was thinking it would be very unMaria-like to actually have a genuine desire to play Fed Cup

Because of her injury she couldn't play '07 but apparently 'cus she practiced with the team and watched the matches, she qualified. You just have to show ''commitment'' to Fed Cup and apparently that was enough. They're always gonna pull strings for Masha though.

Guys. Looking at Petra there, I'm really thinking that Masha needs to step it up against Vika and get a good win over her at Miami/IW or during the clay court season. 'cus Petra isn't gonna be a threat until clay season or possibly even Wimbledon. Rena isn't playing anythin until the clay season and that's when Masha would have her best chance against her.

Anyways point is, Masha needs to concentrate on Vika when the rest of the field isn't as strong and revert this blossoming ownership.

Anyone think she should play Doha or Dubai?

I wouldn't rule out Petra (she's flaky as hell, and can play horrendous matches, but she can return to GOAT form at any time), but I agree that getting a quality win over Azarenka needs to be the TOP priority for Maria over the next few months. Like I think I wrote in this forum the other day, Maria needs to start beating the elite girls in WTA tournaments by actually playing great tennis against them, rather than just outfighting them, so that she has confidence in her actual game and that it's good enough to beat them when she runs into them in the semis or finals at Slams (rather than just the confidence that she's mentally tougher than them and will be able to outfight them if it gets to a tight 3-setter).

I actually think it's good that she's skipping the Middle East tournaments... what does she really have to gain from playing them? They're not warm-ups for anything major, and most of the top players aren't playing them so a win for Maria at either wouldn't have much value (Kim and Serena aren't playing them, and even Azarenka hinted the other day that she might skip them). And we all know Maria's not the type to play things just for the sake of ranking points or prizemoney/appearance fees. I think playing them would just waste vital physical and mental energy which she could save for more important tournaments, and she'd be having to acclimatise to the freezing conditions in Europe, then rushing to the swelteringly hot and humid conditions in the Mid East, then the cooler conditions in the States, all within a few weeks  She's much better off just focussing on being ready for Indian Wells/Miami after Paris imo.

Well now that Azarenka has hinted she's not playing them, there's no point. I only thought she should play one to get another go at her. But yeah, hopefully she doesn't get sick 'cus the work Masha and Hoggy seem to get done in those three week blocks is genuinely amazing. I pretty much agree with anything you said, and I know you can never rule out Petra but I'm sure as Hoggy said the first set over Kvitova at AO will give Masha the confidence to know she can beat her on a consistent basis, at least on hardcourts. But yes, I can't exaggerate how badly I feel she needs a solid win over Azarenka. I don't Expect Vika to have a slump, but Fed Cup will show a lot.

*EDIT* Apparently Vika just pulled out of Fed Cup, some lower back problem

Does, of course... It will be 3-0 and that means Team Russia wins the tie ;)

that kinds of sucks for the doubles teams but it's still awesome.
I can't wait to see the celebration if she wins.

Normally I wouldn't go so far off topic but I have to... this is just something else altogether. Take a read if you want. The full articles is very time consuming - but the first page should be enough.

I added this note to that thread:

It's not just this school district. These attitudes do not exist in a vacuum, for example, The U.S has a Presidential Campaign in process to determine who the Republican candidate will be to oppose Obama in the November elections. Two of them remaining in the contest are in complete agreement of the treatment these kids endured: Santorum and the Newt. Romney would agree with the means but probably not the end result.

Others on the national stage also support these attitudes: Bachman, Palin, Angle and virtually the entire membership of organizations like the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party, Evangelical Christians, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church (Council of Bishops, for example) and those who refer to themselves as Very Conservative.

The USA is in far more danger from fundamentalist Christians that it ever was from fundamentalist Islam. The Chinese curse hangs over this country: "May you live in interesting times."

Let's hope not, but they're up 2-0 so I guess they just don't take risks?

nice...I didn't have a chance to watch Maria's match yesterday, but it looks like it was NID all the way through:cheer: As for today, good decision by Shamil to rest Maria and let Nadia to play - this way she will be able to rest and prepare for Paris Indoors

No, because even if Petrova loses to CSN , Sveta will win against SOLER-ESPINOSA (or anybody alse in their team) and it will be 3-1

or if Petrova wins and makes score 3-0 , then makarova plays agains SOLER-ESPINOSA ( I think)

Hmmm... Just checked the Russian forum. No explanation why, just the tweet from a journalist who said Masha would be replaced. IMO it was expected. Yesterday I was askin on twitter if Masha would play if Sveta won, because seriously there is no need for her to do it + she needs to rest for Paris and if Russia wins 3:0 she can go to Paris eariler today. And now I saw that some days ago the same question was going through the heads of some of her Russian fans who didn't want her to take risks and make herself tired by playing 2 FC matches.
