Hi Darren! You're gay? Well you learn something everyday.

This poll just shows how uncomfortable str8 posters are at entering a thread like this. ;) might get converted or something.

Unless this 10% stuff is all a pile of pants ;)

Hey, how come there's no choice for us lesbians?
Not all of us are willing to consider ourselves gay.
(In some places many gays are rather hostile to lesbians.)

DeniseM
Nov 16th, 2002, 10:44 PM
As examples, try putting up posters about a lesbian dance in our gay village. The gays will all tear them down.

Try opening up a lesbian cafe, and all the gay businesses will oppose it at city council.

Want to participate in the Pride Parade? You'll have to have a separate Dyke March.

These are just a few of the TRUE examples that can be given.

Sam L
Nov 16th, 2002, 11:51 PM
That's sad. Why is that DeniseM?

Why are there so few bisexual people around?

DeniseM
Nov 17th, 2002, 01:53 AM
Well, while there are some gays who are positive about lesbians, it seems most of them don't want us around. If there's a gay club, the guys there want to meet other guys. They resent lesbians taking up space. Similarly, a gay business feels other gay businesses attract more potential customers for them, but that a lesbian one won't. And some gay males are just antagonistic, for whatever reason, towards lesbians. I can't say I know all the reasons they tear down our posters. But they do. Quite consistently. And it is quite evident in many ways.

I notice bisexual women have a huge presence in our Dyke March, rather than in the Gay Pride Parade. Indeed, there seem to be far more bisexual women than lesbians in the Dyke March. So I would suspect there are far more bisexual women around than we might think. (At least in Toronto, where they are able to be much more open.)

I don't know about bisexual men.

Of course, bisexuals have it tough. Too often they are discriminated against by not only straight people, but also by gays and lesbians. :(

Well DeniseM technically speaking lesbians are gay. Makes you wonder why gay men would be so discriminatory where you live then.

actually, "gay" used to only refer to MEN who prefered MEN... not women who prefered women! Nowadays the lines of that have been blurred somewhat, but some "gay" women still prefer to be called lesbian, not gay!

Nov 17th, 2002, 05:01 PM
Oh, I didn't know that. So it isn't really correct to say that a woman is "gay".

DeniseM

Caesar's Messenger, some lesbians do call themselves gay.
Many of us don't. I say lesbian. My girlfriend says either lesbian or queer.

DeniseM
Nov 17th, 2002, 06:03 PM
As another example, the church I belong to, does NOT call itself a gay church. It calls itself a gay, lesbian, and bisexual church.

I guess it depends on the person. As for me, I don't really care either way...but actually, I do usually say "gay" to mean males and females of the homosexual variety when I'm with friends. *shrugs*
